I was high.......2005-03-26

This is embarrassing, I think I just shot myself in the foot: I've completely changed my view !!! I am glad I could leave another review about this CD because my earlier one was totally wrong. This CD is great!!! I don't know what I was smoking at the time, both disc 1 and 2 are packed with beats, groove, funk and style. In short, a well mixed club/party album. I used to say I liked the 2nd one better, man was I wrong. The 1st one is loaded with funk disco house style tracks with a blend of some trance/techno songs, I love it!! The second one is more on the trance/techno etc. side (it's good but not much I need to say). This Australia release is far better then the UK version which is a 3 disc set packed with mostly junk. This 2003 Annual from Australia is even better than the 2005 Annual I am listening to right now, it just doesn't get old. Maybe after 2 years of constant listening to this CD, it has finally got me, and I am glad that happened.

I am a collector of the Ministry of Sound series. I must say that this is in the top 5 of all the ones I have. I actually brought this CD to work. Everyone could not get enough of it and kept trying to steal it from me.

I also have noticed that the Australian CD's have a better selection compared to the UK and US versions.

I highly recommend this CD along with the new 2004 Annual, also from Australia.

Alternative Perspectives.......2003-11-01

I have to say if you are use to hard house/trance the first CD will probably not suit your needs. I believe, however they have tried to cater for various flavours here having a softer more funky set in CD1 and then as the night goes on, the lights go down, the tunes start to hit with the second CD.

Overall I think classic tunes such as Thrill Me, or as I refered to it for several months & walking into record stores "have you got 'when the sun goes down?'"... "sorry mate never heard of it!"; will certainly lift your spirits followed by the Streets, Underworld & a DJ saving your life!!

Anyway - this is a perfect addition to anyones CD collection and one which many people will be happy with; definitely a crowd pleaser at a house party or 'an all back to mine' option.

As has been said, the first disc is not so good, but the second is great. I bought this along with The Annual 2002 3 disc set, and I would say that The Annual 2002 is a little better, but mainly because it has more music. Here's my ratings (from 1 to 5, 5 being the best) for the individual tracks:

I couldn't agree more!.......2003-01-24

...It sounds like one of those bad remixes of late '80 early '90.
Second disc has a bit more energy in it here and then, but it is boring seeing as a whole concept. The only track which cheered me up a bit on first cd was the Streets. But I'll advise you get the "Original Pirate Material" instead... Caution advised!

A review from the Home of MoS !.......2006-07-21

Firstly, i'm English and from the UK, so if anyone knows what MoS's music like, its me. And believe me, anyone who thinks this annual is good NEEDS to listen to the original, and the best annuals before Millenium, when it all changed.
Before Millenium, the MoS annuals had been based around the London club itself - it was real popular. The annuals had character, the songs were longer, they were mixed stunningly, and... it wasnt commercial!
By the time The Annual 2003 was released, MoS was already using commercialism as the driving force behind sales - to get kids to go out and buy the album for their discos. But in a way, I think people are slagging off MoS too much - I'll admit, the album captures "2002's biggest hits" (not there usual route), but people are forgetting this is, The Annual OF 2002. There were good/bad tunes, but the albums good because of its character - ok, theres been no heart or effort from any dj's - its entirely computer mixed! but alot of tunes remind you of 2002, which where good times - commercial or not!
Mellow's probably the word to describe the feel of the album, and quite wintery (again, personal opinion) alot of tunes I used to hear years back are here, and remind me of good times. One such song is 'Heaven' of course - yep, quite cheesy perhaps, but still helps that overall feel. 'Lets get it right' and 'My vision' are 2 other nice tunes. Its got its feel good tunes to like 'Can you feel' which I love, and Forever. But this is only my personal feeling towards album, so again, it depends if you can remember some (or most!) of the tunes from 2002.
On the more technical side, this album will never win awards for great mixing. Its a shame that some great tunes have been poorly remixed, and some are quite woeful. This was also the first MOS album to have SCOOTER with one of his pathetic tunes, in which he shouts out mindless, random words and sentences like "Jungle Solider" with a chip munk singing in the background. I think after seeing his name on the tracklist I knew who this album was intended for, and certainly not older teens/adults. And of course, I don't need to mention Las Ketchup...
Its hard to choose the best cd, but cd2 has the least cheezy material. Point of view is another memorable song, and At night is good too, but your bound to find most of these on countless 2002 albums. Its just such shame that the days when annuals came if faux leather style cases, with descent booklets looking back at the year, but most importantly they where intended for older teens/adults are gone. This album would be perfect for a school disco unfortunately, but i'll still listen and think back to when things like that happend, because it was fun! And yes, I have grown up now.
Cd3 tries to capture a party theme, with some... unsual choices. The remix of the classic song Take My Breath Away is not bad, but nothing compared to the original. The worst song is Culture Flash, which has a horrible, horrible Euro style synth and I just cant listen to it. But Free is one of my faves - a nice song, and Moonlight Shadow is another one of those looking back songs.
All in all, this album crosses a fine line, but it clearly depends on so many things. With cd1 probably having the most "input" from a person, in the order of songs, 'some' mixing etc thats probably my fave cd, but there all quite average. However... if your wanting to look back at 2002 with good memories, I'd say buy it, because in that sense, this is a real classic now in '06. In an MoS Annual sense, this is a disaster for them. The album would have been appreciated so much more if another label had made it... Anyone who remembers '02 in a good way should get this album now. But, if you want the TRUE annuals, proudly presented in their leather book cases, I suggest you date back to 1995 and from then on, when the 5 best Annuals were produced - volumes 1,II, III, IV, and Millennium Edition. Those were the days when the annuals were a piece of art.

CD-2 of this set..........2005-04-07

CD-2 IS THE GREATEST THING EVER!!!! JUST GET IT FOR DISC 2, the rest blow but.. WOW!!!

This is what Dance is all about!!.......2004-03-15

This has to be one of the best compilations of dance hits to come out in a long time. The mixing is some of the best I've heard in a while, each song playing right off of the previous with perfect smoothness. It seems dance compilations are a dime a dozen these days, but Ministry of Sound has once again proven themselves to be the authority of dance and club music the world over.

Krystal K leads the way........2004-02-29

Even though this CD has gotten a LOT of bad reviews, I really enjoy it. It's the only MOS compilation I have (but hopefully I will be buying much more someday). There are a lot of good tracks on here but it has its share of bad ones, too...easily. But I am very pleased with it.

Best- Krystal K's "Let's Get It Right", Warrior's "If You Want Me", Kelly Llorenna's "Tell It To My Heart", Shakedown's "At Night", Dee Dee's "Forever" (obviously), Rezonance Q's "Someday", Divine Inspiration's "The Way", N-Trance's "Forever", Jurgen Vries' "The Theme", etc.

Worst- Sushi's "The Earthshaker" (corny & just awful); most of the covers on there except for Cyndi Lauper; DJ Alligator's "Lollipop", Interactive's "Forever Young"...

Out of the 3 cd's, I think CD1 is the best, with the exception of "Earthshaker", the one track that I skip every time. Buy it!

Too much cheese indeed........2003-06-15

These 3 CD does not remind me of the past Annual release from MOS. Instead they remind me of DDR Arcade. Of all those bubblegum songs. and what's going on with all the cheessy chimp-squirre female vocals? It wasn't random either, it was intentional... If you are looking for 3 CDs of junk with only 4-7 good songs, buy it today. If not, then save your dollars for the MOS Chillout Cd set instead. They are much better.

Like comfort food but in music form..........2006-02-28

I'm all about music and this album is one of my favorites. Time and again, regardless of how many new albums I may buy, I will always return to this one. It has so many good songs on it and I can't see myself living without it. Some songs of note are "Point of View" "Blue Jeans" "Murder On The Dancefloor" "Yes" "Take Me Away" and my favorite "Wavy Gravy" which ends the session really quite nicely. It's such a great party album everyone should own a copy.

Very Dissappointed.......2004-10-27

I am a full-time dj but only a casual MOS fan. The mixing on this CD is pathetic. If this was mixed live, then my train-crash mixing has better timing than his beat-mixing. It honestly sounds like Winamp did the mixing for this CD. Vocal overlaps and poor timing destroy some good songs. The thing is, the mixes they picked for the CD are second-rate. Definately NOT the mixes I would pick. Save your money and don't patronized this hack job of mixing and music selection.

It is such a shame that this CD is composed of poor songs. A few, such as Will I seem to have an uplifting beat, but generally, this CD is not all that good. As a tip, i would advise you download the songs on [local website] and see if thay are even worth your money to buy. Why pay for a CD with like 25 songs, when only 3 or so are even worth your time!?

A dissapointing compilation.......2005-03-01

You shouldn't buy this compilation, quite frankly, it sucks. A mix of cheezy dance and lazy trance wich makes for a boring evening. Sure there a few good songs in it (like Crazy,sexy, marverlous from paffendorf) but the vast majority of the songs range between average and mediocre or falls into the played out category (like "get down saturday night" from oliver cheatham wich is basically the same song as "make love".

You Can Live With or Without It........2003-04-14

"The Annual 2003" is a mix of the good, the bad, and the cheesy in dance music. True to its formula, Ministry of Sound takes 40 songs, trims them down to 3 minutes or less, and crams them into two CDs. While some of the material is good, cruising through a whopping 40 tracks on two 80-minute CDs is a sometimes exhausting exercise that proves that less is often more. But there are highlights in the form of DJ Sammy's cover of the Don Henley hit "Boys of Summer," Royksopp's frisky "Eple" (the track was released in 2001 but appears on a 2003 CD anyway); and Oliver Cheatham's "Get Down Saturday Night," a retro 70's jam that ends up being the lone grain of soul on these two CDs. Elsewhere, we get samples of hyper trance and house that ranges from the serviceable to the forgettable. And what's with the abundance of 80s covers? Soda Club's "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" works fine, but Novaspace's cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" is so cheesy it should be off limits to the lactose intolerant. The verdict? Not a bad CD collection, but not a very good one, either. On a scale of 1 to 10, "The Annual Spring 2003" rates a 6.

Better than the UK version.......2003-08-17

I got this as an alternative to listen to instead of the usual british release, My main reason for purchase was down to the huge amount of great releases currently passing through germany and the hitting the charts here in Great Britain quite some months later, I've bought almost every other release by Ministry of Sound over the past few years and this year has been slightly different, almost all other releases are the same tracks being remixed and re-organised just to knock out yet another album, but.... this one shows the german side of things and has proved to be a great change, if you've been getting bored of the usual releases from good old MOS then buy this one.

The Ministry of Sound does it again with a fantastic collection of the top summer tunes from 2003. CD1 is more in the house/lounge style, while CD2 takes it up a notch with bangin' trance and electronic anthems. This is the perfect CD for the summer.

I Liked this album A LOT.......2003-12-13

I found this album (the twilight one, wich stands for the CD02) very good, indeed. Some lounge/house tracks, wich make you want to dance, bute still in a light speed. CD01 is slowlyier, but also nice.
