4 out of 5 stars Otis, My Man!.......2007-01-19

Simply Awesome. If you're not moved by this live version of "These Arms of Mine" you have no soul.

5 out of 5 stars OTIS LIVE.......2005-08-25

for some reason, I've always preferred the Otis Redding live recordings to his studio work. He was undoubtdedly one of the greatest live performers ever, and his live albums capture some of that, if not all of it. The Monterey Pop Festivel recording is great as well (in addition to having some great live Jimi Hendrix on side 1).

4 out of 5 stars A great album, but not perfect..........2003-07-15

It's easy to understand how people can arbitrarily give this album 5 stars based on the genius of Otis, the man, THE BIG O. But unfortunately, although the man himself is in top form at this juncture, the band isn't up to snuff.

The track selection is fine, and the band handles capably enough, but they're not on equal footing, both in regards to performance and recording; the mix is a little unbalanced. Far better is his "Live In Europe" release, and (if you can find it) his "Live At Monterey Pop Festival".

5 out of 5 stars Otis was unquestionably one of the greatest.......2002-03-17

soul singers ever. On this side, recorded 35 years ago, he and his band are in top form, threatening to "blow the roof off" The Whiskey.

Look at the list of tunes: Respect, These Arms of Mine, Satisfaction, Pain in My Heart, Any Ole Way -- I mean this album hits you upside the head and you come back asking for more!

My favorite cut, though, is Otis' version of James Brown's "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag." Hey, I like it every bit as much as James's! This thing just cooks, baby! And keeps on cookin!

You like soul from the 60s? Don't fool around, buy this CD. You couldn't spend your money any better! Hey, I've had the vinyl issue of this side forever, and it's been through so many parties, that it's scratched, mutilated and damn near worn out! Glad to see this being put on CD.

Wasn't no one better than Otis!

5 out of 5 stars Otis Redding's Best Live Album.......2001-03-06

Recorded in 1966, Otis Redding's In Person At The Whisky A Go Go is his best live album, beating out Live in Europe, and is one of the best and most energetic live albums ever made. The album kicks off with the great I Can't Turn You Loose followed by Pain In My Heart, from Redding's first album. This is followed by the soulful plea of Just One More Day and a great version of his earlier hit Mr. Pitiful. The recording of Satisfaction on here is even better then the version on Otis Blue, and easily rivals the Stone's version. This is followed by three great soul songs, I'm Depending On You, Any Ole Way and the great ballad These Arms of Mine. Reddin then goes into a kickin' version of James Brown's Papa's Got A Brand New Bag, which at least as good as the original. The album closes with the classic Respect. This is just a tour de force performance and you can feel the energy coming off of it. This prooves just how great of a voice Otis Redding had and just how soulful he was. This is an essential album in Otis Redding's catalog and in the history of Soul and R&B.

5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful.......2007-04-15

It's fun and engaging! Great musicianship and humor. My parents had an LP of this and I searched high and low until I had a CD of my own.

Simply wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Gotta join the crowd.......2006-01-19

OK, As much as I hate joining the crew of "my parents introduced me..." well, my parent's introduced me to the Limelighters, for years I grew up appreciating, not only great song writing and music, but quick wit and humor.

Anyone who grew up on these guys and the Trio, MUST see Mighty Wind BTW, Anywho, This is one of my favorite albums, has been since I was so young I don't want to talk about it... From "There's a Meetin' Here Tonight" to "Have Some Maderia (A family fav.) these are songs we should raise OUR kids on. at least that way, they'll grow up with a sense of humor. (Amazing moment in my life... early teens, folk music festival in FL at a local concert hall. My little sis and me in our late teens, screaming out all the words (surrounded by then bemused 40-50 somethings, never mind that I'm mid-30's myself now...as Limelighters and K. Trio preform. The best truly).
Anyway, if you remember them and love them, revisit them again.

5 out of 5 stars A Trip Down Memory Lane.......2005-09-04

I ran across this CD and just had to have it. It's as fun now as it was when it came out! My friends and I used to get together every weekend and sing along to folk music. I remember singing Hey, Li Lee Li Lee to this LP. What fun! "Madeira, M'Dear" still embarrasses me makes me laugh me after all these years. This album is great and a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars You'll wear out the CD..........2005-03-05

Like many of the other reviewers of the Limeliters, I was introduced to the trio through my father, through this album. Thirty years after I first heard it and twenty after I last heard it, I picked up the CD last week, and sang along with it the first time through. The songs stay with you, thanks to soaring harmonies and ferocious energy. The humor retains its bite more than forty years after its recording. Most impressively, the Limeliters didn't patronize its audience. Most of the humor on the record is sophisticated, and much of it is unspoken. For example, "The Monks of St. Bernard is sung entirely in French," yet the trio get across wickedly the salacious nature of the song. You don't need to like folk music to adore this record. If you appreciate musical virtuosity and peerless showmanship, you'll wear out the CD.

5 out of 5 stars MEMORABLE.......2002-09-06

As a child, I grew up listening to the Limelighters as my parents had seen their nightclub acts and purchased all their albums. Their songs, which are ballads from across many lands, consist of hilariously funny audience group participation as well as tender songs of love. The Kingston Trio was a fantastic group, but in my mind never held a candle to the genius of the The Limelighters. Lou Gottlieb's quick witted ad-libbing was genius in itself and Alex Hassiliev was the quiet baritone. But Glenn Yarbrough, my favorite, has a clear splendid voice that when accompanied by his beautiful whistling brought forth great tenderness to his ballads of lost loves. This album consists of some of their most memorable songs. My son, also, grew up listening to this tremendous group and now three generations of our family have loved the Limelighters!

It doesn't get much better than this: a full night of Miles Davis captured live in his prime at an intimate jazz club. In 1961, Davis, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, and drummer Jimmy Cobb recorded at San Francisco's legendary Blackhawk. Originally released as two LPs, the complete sets, with nine previously unissued tracks, have been compiled in this superb, digitally-remastered, two-CD set. Davis's pithy and poetic trumpet tones signature a number of standards and original compositions. Backed by Kelly's in-the-pocket pianisms, Cobb's articulate drumwork, Chamber's intelligent basslines, and Mobley's Dexter Gordon-ish sax tones, Davis bares his wounded and wonderful musical soul to an engaging and enthralled audience. The elongated and illuminated renditions of the quicksilver modal number "So What," the dancing "On Green Dolphin Street," and the Latin-tinged "Neo" bridge the 1959 masterpiece LP Kind of Blue and the forthcoming '60s superband with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. The scene-stealer on this date is Mobley. His ebullient tone and sterling improvisations remind us of Miles Davis's equally impressive talents and a bandleader. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

4 out of 5 stars Goodnights........2007-05-19

This is a very good purchase for fans of Miles Davis and the sound of that time. It is a double album but many of the tracks are redundant. If you like the live format, and are interested in these particular performers, this is a
"must have" album.

5 out of 5 stars ONLY ONE WORD: MAGIC.......2007-02-03

First, sorry for my english. If you close your eyes , you can feel the ambiance of the Blackhawk.
Great the rythim section, Winton Kelly is the third leader. Hank Mobley is one of my favourites, but we can understand the legend of champions of middleweight's tenors. His sound i't's so sweat, don't have the power of Gordon, Coltrane, Shorter. And Miles, it's Miles, that's it's enough.
I recomand listen every record two o three times, every time put your attention in a different instrument of the song.

4 out of 5 stars Mobley and Kelly play above themselves.......2006-12-01

I've known every note of the Friday Night version of "On Green Dolphin Street" since I was 15 years old -- except for the first part of Hank Mobley's solo, which was edited out for the Columbia anthology I bought. As I got to know the works of Miles Davis, I quickly realized that the song was recorded at the Blackhawk, but reissue after reissue left it out, and I cursed Columbia Records for being a bunch of idiots. But here it is, with Mobley's entire solo included, along with many other riches whose value will depend on the listener. For me, both versions of "If I were a Bell" are spectacular examples of a happiness one doesn't expect from Miles Davis (indeed, his last few notes on the Friday night version are suddenly sad, which makes a beautiful coda to the performance). The Saturday night version of "On Green Dolphin Street" is more mellow and less inspired, but the Friday version makes up for that. There is an almost menacing quality to the melody and to Miles Davis's solo, worlds apart from the luminous version recorded with Coltrane and Adderley and Bill Evans in 1958.
Above all, Hank Mobley and Wynton Kelly reached the peak of their careers that weekend. They were never as good before or after, and that is the doing of Miles Davis, who has been justly called the greatest LEADER in modern jazz. He goaded his musicians to play above themselves, and this is the prime example. For me, the best soloist on all four CDs is Kelly, who plays with a joy and confidence that are the hallmark of the set.

5 out of 5 stars Let The Music Do The Talking.......2006-11-24

With the classic cover photo from the original 2-lp set intact, the four sets covering two nights at the legendary Blackhawk nightclub in San Francisco shows the potential of re-releasing live material by allowing the unedited tapes to let the music take the listener to great heights through a group that briefly backed Miles.

The April 21-22, 1961, gigs featured what some critics deemed a transitional band of Wynton Kelly (p), Paul Chambers (b), Jimmy Cobb (d) and Hank Mobley (sax). Because the group followed the quintet with John Coltrane and preceeded the historical sessions with Wayne Shorter, the ensemble - in my opinion - does not get the acclaim it truly deserves.

To hear the sets without any editing shows how each song builds upon one another and subtly shape into a dynamic that truly makes for an experience of a lifetime on stage and in the audience. The leadership and playing of Miles is nothing short of spectacular as he pushes each musician to quickly create beautiful textures on a majestic tapestry.

It is not the time a group is together, but what each member does with the studio sessions and on stage, that defines brilliance. The Blackhawk sets are a reminder of the power Miles had in challenging musicians and the audience to redefine the art of jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Get in your time machine, close the door, and shut your eyes...........2006-11-10

I'm going to make this short: buy this album--you won't regret it! Instead of studio re-takes, overdubs and an altered order of songs like you get with most live recordings, this is the way it went down that evening in 1961. And you are THERE, at a table near the stage, at the Blackhawk club as the players stroll out, set up the first song, count it in and blass off. Each of the four sets unfolds exactly as it happened that night---completely unedited. Miles in charge, as always, expecting the very best tonight from pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, and drummer Jimmy Cobb. And they repond, launching themselves higher and higher, through the stratosphere, up into the ether where Miles hangs out, circling him, trading punches with him, diving ducking and weaving with him. No one knows what's going to happen next-this is live jazz--live without a net. You can almost feel the chemistry between the players. Close your eyes and put on the headphones if you really want to get there. And hang on!

5 out of 5 stars Have been looking for the Children's Medly forever!.......2007-05-19

I was so excited to find this CD including the Children's Medly. I wanted my children to learn the songs that I learned when I was young and that you don't hear anyone sing anymore. I hope the traditional music of the Clancy's and Tommy Makem lives on long beyond their time.

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Album.......2004-08-21

The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem were the finest Irish group to ever come along. They were soley responsible for the Irish Folk revival in Ireland, and brought it to the USA. It is very unfortunate that the original concerts aren't available on CD, but this one is. After listening to old LP's, I find that they always performed better live vs. studio. A great album, and a must for any Irish music lover. BUY NOW!!!

5 out of 5 stars A great early Clancy/Makem album.......2004-08-13

I agree with the other reviewers about this album. "Johnson's motor car" was a great hit. They performed it on the Ed Sullivan show on St. Patrick's Day. The "Children's melodies" section still stirs emotions and memories from our daughters (now in their late 40"s). I have never heard a more moving performance of "The parting glass".

5 out of 5 stars Music that means something !.......2003-02-02

So much of the "music" we hear today is nothing more than noise coupled with the required dancing. Take away the visuals and there's NOTHING !! While I was growing up, I refused to listen to traditional Irish music, folk music, classical music, etc. What a pity !! I will always regret not seeing the Clancy Bros. perform... one listen to this masterpiece of beautifully crafted songs filled with wit, humor, anger and sadness shows why ! In particular for me is "The Parting Glass", the final song. So simple in it's construction; which belies the genious; it is a heart touching tune sung solely by Liam Clancy then achingly beautifully joined by the others. In the end, when Tom Clancy emparts to the audience with "God bless"..... you know he means it !!!

5 out of 5 stars A fun night out!.......2001-03-19

This CD shows the Clancy/Makem collaboration at its best:In front of a responsive crowd, in great voice, with a collection of Irish folk tunes, Rebel songs, and the wonderful medley of Irish children's songs that show the humor and pain of growing up in Ireland. Touching and funny, this CD is for anyone who enjoys the vocal side of Irish music.Besides, where else will you find a Gaelic sing-along sung by a packed Carnegie Hall crowd?

For In person, Live at the Troubadoor, it was great to hear the songs from my childhood again: especially those frustrating lines that had been lost to recall. The other album Presenting was new to me but equally as good. Why have the current DJ's forgotten these classics?

2 out of 5 stars One Terrible, One OK.......2005-08-07

There are 2 albums on this CD, the live one is unlistenable. It has to be the most annoying and obnoxious listening experince of my life!!! Awful!!! The other album is OK but not as good as I remember it, very dated... Skip this group!!

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Every Folk Music Fan.......2005-06-09

I'm so pleased that the material from The New Christy Minstrels has been re-released on CD. These first two albums are fun and full of life. "Presenting" features rousing uptempo songs like "That Big Rock Candy Mountain" to ballads like the traditional "Oh! Shenando" with beautiful vocals. "In Person" contains a lot of humor, from songs like "The Invalids" to a great series of short tunes. I wholeheartedly recommend this CD... it's certainly fun to listen and sing along to!

5 out of 5 stars Definitly a "Must Have" CD.......2003-08-29

Whatever you look for in music, you will find it on this recording. Folk fan or not, the excellent arrangements and blend of the Artist's voices cannot fail to draw appreciation from any listener. I have never worn out a CD before. This might be the one!

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable!.......2003-07-17

This collection is a work of art! What a difference it makes going from the vinyl album to the CD. It is so clear that you would think the performers are in your living room performing "LIVE".
But this review is about the group as well as the CD. The New Christy Minstrels didn't sing anti-war songs that many of the folk performers of the 60's did. The music had to be simple and could easily be hummed, as Randy Sparks once said. That's what made this group so unique!
This CD, especially the 'IN PERSON' album, shows the true character of this group. Each member was outstanding as a singer and instrumentalist. Whether they performed as a solo, or a group within the big group, they were outstanding!
This album also shows the creative talent behind the founder of the group, Randy Sparks. His talent...is heard in the arrangements..in the songs that he wrote...in his leadership.
The song 'DANCE ME A JIG' is performed by Dolan Ellis and is not on the original album. Yet, it is truly a terrific piece of work!
From the opening song, 'DENVER', to the final song, 'SAINT'S TRAIN', this album is one of the best by this group and it comes highly recommended to those that are looking for a full, robust sound!
Thank you, Randy Sparks and the New Christy Minstrels, for a great album!

5 out of 5 stars perfect selection for commencement/ graduation.......2007-06-11

We were concerned after reading some other reviews that this version of Pomp and Circumstance wouldn't be the correct movement or the full length version. This selection has the song for graduation AND the extended length, so it gives plenty of time for processionals. If this is what you need, this is the CD to get.

4 out of 5 stars Great Starting Point for Classical Music Novices.......2004-08-13

"Simply the Best Classicial Anthems" is exactly what the title indicates. This is a collection of what the CD says are "36 of the most powerful classics on Earth". My review of this CD comes from someone who is a Classical Music Novice. I'm familiar with some of the composers, musical styles, musical periods, and some of the terminology that is key to understanding Classical Music. By no means am I an expert. I have basically popped in this two CD collection into my player and have enjoyed the sounds it produces. If you are in the same category as I am or maybe just wanting to be introduced to Classical Music - this is going to be a very good CD to have in your collection. For the more seasoned Classical Music fan, this could be either enjoyable or overkill.

The CD contains 36 songs composed by the legends of Classical Music Composers from the past. The bulk of the works come from Composers in the the 19th and 20th century, but there are works from the Romantic and Classical eras of the late 18th and early 19th century (such as Beethoven and Mozart). In general you will find most of the major names of Composers you would expect to find - names such as Tchiakovsky, Handel, Verdi, Strauss, Elgar, and Bach are all there. The only major composer who I would have expected to see on this CD that I don't see is Frederic Chopin. The composers of the late 20th century are not included on this collection - so you won't see Leonard Bernstein or John Williams on this set. While these Composers are excellent, I do think style of the tracks on this collection pre-date their style.

The recordings themselves are done by the great Orchestras around the world. For the most part, European Orchestras were used to deliver the tracks. There are a few exceptions: The Chicago Symphony Orchestra delivers "The Ride of the Valkyries"; The Toronto Symphony Orchestra delivers "Dance of the Knights"; and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra delivers Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture". Some of the European Orchestras that are well known include: BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra, Choeur Philhamonique de Strasbourg, and more. Also included are performances by well known names in the Classical space such as Marie-Claire Alain (Bach's "Toccate and Fogue in D Minor" and Saint-Saens' "Symphony for Organ No 3"), Piero Toso (Vivaldi's "Allegro From Spring - Four Seasons"), and Placido Domingo appears on Puccini's "Nessun Dorma".

The 2 Disc collection contains a total of over 2 hours and 6 minutes of music. The selections that are included in the set will sound very familiar to you when you play them. You probably have both heard and seen the names of tracks such as: Oref's "O Fortuna"; Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man"; Beethoven's "First Movement from Symphony Number 5" and "Ode To Joy"; Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance", and Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture". Many of the other tracks will also sound familiar, but maybe not so much by name - such as Wagner's "The Ride of the Valkyries", Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathoustra"; Grieg's "Piano Concerto", and "Dies Irae" (versions included by Mozart and Verdi - you can compare the two and judge for yourself). As for the Discs themselves, I think most of the casual fans will like the selections on Disc Two better, but Disc One is still very good. On a sidebar, the Israel Philharmonic's version of "1812 Overture" is by far the best you will hear - particularly at the end, the booming drums create almost a 3 dimensional vision of fireworks being launched into the air.

There one big negative on this collection is some of the recording quality. The clarity of the recording is there, but some of the recording levels leave a lot to be desired. On some of the softer parts, it is barely audible without significantly turning up your volume. This is very evident on "O Fortuna" where you will hear almost dead silence during from the 30 second to 1:30 mark of the track unless you crank your volume up. Same with the first few seconds of Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathoustra" and Tchiakovsky's "1812 Overture". When the volume is cranked up you will hear them - but then the other sections will be way too loud. I'm surprised with modern technology that this couldn't be addressed better.

The liner notes are pretty thin. You do get the Composers, Performers/Orchestras, and recording dates. There isn't any more details than that and you won't learn anymore insight on the tracks than this information. Despite some of the shortcomings of the liner notes and recording volume, I still think this is an excellent place to start and do recommend this CD if you are a novice to Classical Music and are looking for a great place to start listening to what the Classics have to offer.

5 out of 5 stars **An Exquisite Album**.......2004-02-21

Simply The Best Classical Anthems

Simply The Best Classical Anthems is a compilation album of `36 of the most powerful Anthems on Earth'. But, it is also said to be something else. It is said to be a gateway. A gateway to another world. A world where our imagination can run free without being shackled down by any borders or boundaries or rules or limits. A world that we have all seen or perhaps more accurately have all heard of but for many of us a world that we have never dared to enter. Never dared to enter because of fear. The fear of being ostracised and shunned by our community.

THE MYTH
`Classical Music!', I can hear some of you cry. `That isn't another world. That's just music for the upperclass, the high-brow, and the pompous.' Surprisingly, I too felt this way for a long time until I accepted the invitation made to me by Simply The Best Classical Anthems. I always felt that Classical Music was nice to listen to as background music for a Levis ad or a Car ad but I would consider people strange if they chose to hear it on its own. However, after having listened to this album I realised how wrong I was in my assumptions.

THE TRUTH
Music as with all forms of amusement helps to take you away from where you are now. It helps to relax you when you are stressed with anger; it helps to give you strength when you are vulnerable; it helps to keep your spirits up when you have faced tragedy or loss. It helps. And, for me the type of music that best conjures up the most passionate emotions (love, hate, courage and anger) at our most testing times is Classical Music.
How? I don't know.
Why? I don't know.
I can only promise you that in my experience it does.

THE CHEST
The album, in visual terms, is very difficult to overlook amongst the plethora of records that may surround it. This is because the album has a very distinct purple sleeve cover. Not any kind of purple mind you but the Cadbury's kind of purple. The kind of purple that carries with it an invitation. An invitation that if accepted promises you a treasure inside.
And since, I have always enjoyed the treasure within the purple Cadbury's Dairy Milk wrapper, I asked myself why would an album carrying the same invitation promise to be anything different? Thus, I parted with my tuppence worth and went back home to open this purple chest of promised treasures.

THE PROMISED TREASURE
As you may have guessed, the contents of the album are somewhat different to the contents of a Cadbury's bar. When I opened the album, I was presented with two compact discs. At first glance, there did not seem to be anything special about them. They were just your average, everyday, run of the mill compact discs. To tell you the truth, I was a bit disappointed because I suppose I had hoped for something more.
However, looks can be deceptive. (Afterall, a Cadbury's Dairy Milk does not seem very appetising until you taste it!) And, also come November each year, I am always bemused and surprised at how the shabby contents of a cardboard box can both light up the sky and light up the faces of the neighbourhood. Thus, I pushed aside my assumptions and I ignited the discs (not literally of course, I just pressed the play button on the CD player). And, I let the fireworks begin.

THE KEY
From the very beginning, you will feel like you have unlocked the doorway to something special. And, after a full two hours of listening to both discs, you will feel like you have been taken out of this world and transported to another. Welcome to the world of Classical Music.

GUIDANCE
In the beginning, continue to listen to both discs in one go (i.e. one after the other). After a while, you will know which tracks you enjoy listening to the most. For those tracks you enjoyed the most make a promise to yourself that you will listen to the whole of the piece from which that track came from.
Good Luck on your quest if you choose to accept it.
Ride amongst the Valkyries, listen to the Flight of the Bumblebees, and use The Planets to keep you on the path.

I am not a good reviewer because as with all of my reviews I refuse to comment too much about what is inside the product but rather more about what effect the product has had on me. (Me, me, me. Vain & Egotistic, I know, so my friends and family keep telling me). But, I just want to cause a raucous about the product, enough not to spoil but enough of a raucous to let you experience it for yourself.

So my final words are:
Simply The Best Classical Anthems is an invitation. An invitation to the world of classical music. A world where you can begin a never-ending quest of curiosity. A curiosity that will always be rewarded with fulfilment.

Do you accept such an invitation?

Hope you found this review helpful.

3 out of 5 stars Samples.......2003-11-23

The samples are too short and the quality leaves a lot to be desired. Having said that the choices are wonderful and the price is great. If you're looking for a overview of the best of classical music then this is for you. However if it's quality you're looking for then spent the extra money and look at other choices.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sampler!.......2002-03-20

This is a good sampler, since it covers what you would want in a classical music CD. Looking at the tracks, it has the classic hits, such as "Ride of the Valkyries," "Toccata and Fugue," "Fanfare for the Common Man," "'Jupiter' from `The Planets,'" "Eine Klein Nachtmusik," and "Hallelujah Chorus."

There are also some new pieces that I have fallen in love with, such as "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra," "'Promenade' from Pictures at an Exhibition." The compilers did an interesting double take by including both Verdi's and Mozart's "Dies Ire." I'm not sure which is better.

This music is good for the brain and good for the soul. There is a power and passion that the blaring and glaring music that makes up most of the FM band. I'm reminded of the religious man who said that there is no music in hell. Probably because they wouldn't appreciate it there.

These CDs has a good transfer from the analogue tapes; there is no hiss or fuzziness. The packaging hearkens back to 2001: A Space Odyssey, with the black monolith. And appropriately, "Also Sprach Zarathustra" is the opening track on Disk 2.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-08-06

This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2005-06-29

First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.

In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.

In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.

If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.

4 out of 5 stars Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21

I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.

5 out of 5 stars "Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30

This review is by Crosley.

I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.

There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.

I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.

5 out of 5 stars A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16

There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.

This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.

My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

Recorded live at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia, this double CD is one heck of an extensive tribute to Stephen Sondheim. Backed only by Paul Ford on piano, Mandy Patinkin gets through nearly three dozen songs penned by the Broadway master. Some are obvious (excerpts from Sunday in the Park with George, in which the singer created the title role), others less so ("If You Can Find Me I'm Here" from Evening Primrose). Patinkin is often mocked for his shivering falsetto, but here, it's actually when his voice explores a lower register that it falters. What's more interesting is when he tackles songs usually sung by women, such as Follies' "Broadway Baby" and Company's "Another Hundred People" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy"--the latter hammed up so much that you can hear the chewing of the scenery. A distinctively mannered interpreter, Patinkin remains an acquired taste, but fans of his will be in heaven with this set. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Patinkin Live.......2007-07-19

I am a huge Mandy Patinkin fan, and this is, without a doubt, one of the best CDs in my collection. The transitions between songs are excellent and seamless, plus the song selection was top-notch.

5 out of 5 stars Sondheim recital.......2007-01-22

Probably the best way to approach these disks is to treat them like a recital in a concert hall. Rather as you would listen to a Schubert or Schumann song cycle. Taken together this way, we come to hear Sondheim as one of our finest composers, serious, comic, manic, depressive, always dead on target no matter what the subject matter. And Patinkin is perfect for these songs; he understands the meaning and value of every note and every word, just as a fine concert singer would do, and he makes his listeners understand, too. One of the most intriguing concept albums in recent memory, and a joy all the way through. Bob Finley, Palm Springs, CA.

2 out of 5 stars Also a very dissapointed fan.......2003-08-22

I too LOVE Mandy and Stephen Sondheim and own just about everything both has ever made! I also have been to 6 of Mandy's live performances. This was truly a big dissapointment to me. Every concert I have seen Mandy in has been filled with emotion and his personality just grabs hold of you for an evening of wonderful escape-ism. This to me was very un-entertaining and I actually became irritated after awhile of listening to it. It seemed to drone on with out the wonderful feelings and emotions and soaring voice that Mandy typically puts into his music. I gave this as a gift too (since my friend and I had missed Mandy at his Sondheim review in DC last year) and felt badly that I had. There are so many other great recordings of Mandy...Kidults, Saturday in the Park with George, The Secret Garden, Mandy sings Rogers & Hammerstien and Sondheim. This one has just sat on my shelf after I played it through twice hoping to warm up to it...while my other recordings are very worn out with years of playing!

2 out of 5 stars Adequate performance; poor entertainment.......2003-05-04

I received this disc the same day a "Philip Quast Live at the Donmar". The Quast disc has its own flaws (and I dont wish to compare the two performers) but it has been strung together in a more thoughtful manner, with witty imagination and using a more dangerous in the choice of songs, which is really where this disc fails. The songs here are generally enjoyable though rather standard, and the lack of cohesion (running the songs together doesnt count) means I just dip into the discs listening to a few favourites, rather than enjoying the whole show.

2 out of 5 stars a very disappointed fan.......2003-02-05

I have every recording Patinkin appears on, even if he's only on one track; I adore his voice, his flair, his emotion, his ability to deliver a song.

But (much of) this recording is disappointing, mainly because Mr. Patinkin's voice in the lower range sounds muddled and forced, as though he's lost ability to control it (however, the more falsetto sounds are as clear and sharp as ever).

And I don't care for the format of this performance. Live recordings should have live audience reactions: one (often unrelated) song after another without applause had me wondering when--if ever--was the audience was going to be allowed to react.

Also, while I've never had the privilege of attending a Patinkin concert, I imagined that--above all-- he would be passionate. Perhaps he was. But what (mostly) comes across on the CD is a somber--almost technical--performance.

I hope he's healthy, that mixed quality of singing on this recording was just a fluke, and that his next CD will be a Five-star as all his previous ones have been

When Elvis Presley's late-1960s comeback is discussed, talk generally centers on two events--his 1968 NBC-TV special and the recordings made in Memphis at American Studios shortly thereafter. There was actually a third key event--Presley's first Las Vegas engagement in 13 years (he flopped the first time), which kicked off at the brand-new International Hotel on July 31, 1969. The event is downplayed now since Vegas has become so synonymous with the King's decline--but this was a revitalized Presley, and, for the most part, he rocked. The white jumpsuits and "My Way" would come later; for this show, Presley wore a black karate suit and was backed by one of the hottest rockabilly bands on earth, with the legendary James Burton on lead guitar. Presley does early hits, Sun stuff, a Willie Dixon blues tune, and his latest singles ("In the Ghetto" and "Suspicious Minds"). The furthest he steps outside his oeuvre is a cover of the Bee Gees' "Words." If only he'd continued in this vein. As it is, this stands with Onstage, February 1970 as his finest live recording. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars elvis in person at the international hotel las vegas 1969.......2006-05-28

This is elvis at his all time height,I myself saw elvis a number of times but always wished i saw the 69 vegas performences.Elvis never before or since sounded or performed better. The recordings from the same time period were also of Elvis" best.Unfortunatly, elvis would never perform or record anywhere near as good as he did in 1969,everyone was hopeing he would trash the glitz and schmultz and go back to the way he was here, but we all know the end of the story.

4 out of 5 stars Elvis Live!.......2005-07-14

I like the selections of songs. They are performed very well by Elvis well known live band (James Burton, Johnny Wilkinson and Charlie Hodge-guitar, Jerry Scheff-bass, Ronnie Tutt-drums and Larry Muhoberac-piano). This is his first live album. The songs are compiled from different concerts. Willie Dixon's My Babe, Medley: Mystery Train/Tiger Man and Bee Gees' Words are the songs that you can't find anywhere else.
The only thing that I really don't like on this album is that it is too short.
I Think RCA should release it as a double album or on two on one cd with album On Stage. After all the songs are from the same concerts.

5 out of 5 stars His Best.......2004-06-23

Yes .. these were his best performance(s), marred only by the engineers mix which is just awful. Hopefully, one day we will get more tracks from 1969, properly mixed which would make this an all time best.

4 out of 5 stars ***3/4.......2004-02-22

Many of Elvis Presley's latter-day concerts were marred by overblown production, mediocre arrangements, and a decidedly slick, Vegas-like feel, but the clumsily titled "Elvis In Person At The International Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada" avoids those pitfalls on most of its twelve tracks.

Backed by a fine, muscular rock n' roll band featuring guitarist James Burton, Presley and the band performs very well on songs like "All Shook Up", "Suspicious Minds", the gospel-like "Words", and a great R&B-styled "I Can't Stop Loving You" (which would have been ever better if the Imperials and the Sweet Inspirations, who provide backup vocals, would have shut up).

"My Babe" is a surprisingly good attempt at a genuine blues song (credited to "Dickson", rather than "Dixon"), but unfortunately it starts to unravel half way through.

Elvis rambles a lot during the spoken introductions, and a couple of songs are speeded up too much for their own good, causing them to lose their "groove" (an 80-second "Hound Dog" is a particularly bad example). And I've just never liked "Can't Help Falling In Love"; the melody is trite and predictable, and the lyrics are saccharine.
But most of the twelve cuts are really good, and James Burton deserves a lot of credit for his gritty lead guitar playing.
Not an essential purchase for casual fans, but a pretty good one nonethelesse.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis's Short Lived Comeback Peak.......2004-02-01

The 1968 Comeback Special was too brassy and was backed by corny TV sound. But this album from the very 1st season of Elvis's engagement in Vegas August 1969 is clutch. He wasn't sure he was going to make it so he put all he had into this show. He was dressed in black, thin, tan and healthy. He had incredible energy and focus. He has vicious precison in this album. Even the old songs snap with power. He kicks tail. After this season Elvis was never the same. He returned to Vegas in February 1970 playing much more sappy music. His old hits reduced to fast medleys. But this album he cared. There is a balance of romantic songs and some kick tail rock n' roll. He's incredibly impressive and the audience is stunned by his power. This is why he was called the King. His zenith only lasted one summer. His concerts from then on would become sloppy, forgotten words, old songs run through too fast. It sounds like he's on speed. This album is the way Elvis should have stayed, on top of his game, but he didn't.

There are no more proficient or imaginative practitioners of early music than the members of the Baltimore Consort. Their programs are invariably intelligent and involving, and the performances--well, you just have to hear them. Faultless musicianship and a real sense of style characterize every interpretation and arrangement. This disc features music of Renaissance Scotland--songs, dances, airs--both lively and lyrical, serious and humorous, performed by a colorful variety of period instruments and, often, the beautiful soprano of Custer LaRue. The nice thing is, you don't have to know anything about this music to thoroughly enjoy it. And considering its origins as folk music, that's just as it should be. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars My heart is in the Highlands..........2005-09-27

The Baltimore Consort, an ensemble of six players, was founded in 1980 with the purpose of performing 'broken consort' pieces of Elizabethan origin. 'Broken' here refers to the instrumentation - treble viol/violin, flue/recorder, lute, cittern, bandore and bass viol. Their repertoire expanded beyond these beginnings to include broader British fare, as well as French and Italian music of the time. This is a happy expansion, as it made this disc of Scottish music possible.

The Baltimore Consort play with life and vigour, with a good deal of improvisational flair, not being bound to texts and going through the production of notes as if mechanically. This is true to the spirit and nature of the early music, in which performers often had to 'play by ear', neither being able to read music nor having printed music even if they could.

The music here has a definite Celtic flavour to it. This disc represents 'music fyne', traditional native songs, and English imitations. Scottish courtly music was influenced both by England and France, but put its own unique accent to it. Indeed, most of the words to the songs performed here are in Scots, a dialect of English that had a strong literary flowering in the sixteenth century.

The names of many of the composers of these pieces have been lost to history, particularly the more folk-song oriented ones. Music represented here is as early as 1538 and as late as 1719, nearly 200 years of Scottish musical history.

Added to the regular consort players are Edwin George (playing bagpipe and recorder), and Alice Kosloski as a vocalist (alto). The regular players include Mary Anne Ballard (viols), Howard Bass (bandora), Mark Cudek (cittern and bass viol), Custer LaRue (vocalist/soprano), Larry Lipkis (viols), Ronn McFarlane (lute) and Chris Norman (flutes). Some artists are known from other Dorian productions, such as Ronn McFarlane on the lute in the collection 'Greensleeves'.

This is music that is interesting, flawlessly performed, entertaining and has a quality about it that makes it both ancient and current at the same time. A wonderful recording, this is a real treat to the listener interested in Celtic music, Renaissance music, and folk music.

5 out of 5 stars Awww, wow (^_^) I love this thing!.......2003-01-22

This cd is so pretty! I love scottish music, and there isn't a single song on this alphum i don't like. And that's coming from a 14 year old girl who dresses in black and listens to Marilyn Manson...@_@....eh, I always had weird tastes. I think i'm the only one my age who listens to Malice Mizer, Dir en Grey, Gackt,Morning Musume, Enya, and Bach....AHHH! what have my parents spawned!?!? . .oh, well...
I think that only a closed minded person wouldn't like this alphum (you know, people who only like modern music and only ever wear the -latest fashions' . . .[cough] . . ) But then again, every one's entitled to their own opinion....

5 out of 5 stars The BEST.......2001-11-27

The Baltimore Consort knows that Renaissance music is not only for the people interested in scholarly music that are studying for their finals. Of course, they are using period instruments and techniques in a very informed manner. However, they realized that the most important thing about music is find.

5 out of 5 stars This CD stays in rotation all the time.......2001-08-08

I'm a Baltimore Consort junkie, and this album is entirely at fault. It's the first one I ever bought, and I got hooked. The first track starts off with pipes breaking into a lively song. Who needs to understand the words? The period instruments on this album give it a different sound; it's not classical music in the way you grow up thinking (Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, etc.). It's popular music-- of a different time. Really, really oldies. It's very hard to explain, but if you're thinking about getting a Baltimore Consort album, I'd say to start with this one. It's a great example of their style, and lots of fun to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Like the Music of Scotland? You'll LOVE This!.......2000-12-21

If you enjoy the musical sounds of Scotland, this album is a must-have. Custer LaRue's vocals, Chris Norman's flutes, Ronn McFarlane's lutes and Edwin George's bagpipes will transport you to Renaissance Scotland. And if you've heard these tunes before by other performers, give the Baltimore Consort a chance to show you what quality Renaissance music is all about! While this album is more vocally driven than some of the Baltimore Consort's other albums, it is an enjoyable offering that will only add spice to your music shelf. The songs here are grand examples of the fine Scottish music of the 16th-18th centuries, and will be enjoyed with perhaps as much zeal as the instrumentals. There is a fine musical rendering of the Lord's Prayer in "Our Father God Celestial" on this album, a favorite of mine. There are two bagpipe tunes, which no Scottish album could be without. Lovers of Celtic music (like me) will no doubt enjoy this album, as it is yet another by the Consort that has been played and replayed in my household.
