    Album Description

Oceana is the key work of this album, a composition for orchestra, three guitars, harp and voice, filled with Latin and jazz sounds. It is performed by the acclaimed Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra under conductor Robert Spano (also on Ainadamar), and the multiple Grammy® nominated Brazilian jazz singer Luciana Souza. This piece was Golijov's first commission of a choral work in the spirit of J.S. Bach and became a source of inspiration for La Pasión según San Marcos (St. Mark Passion), a future release on DG.

Tenebrae is a collaboration with the famous Kronos Quartet--one of the most influential ensembles of our time. The meditative work in two movements "is about pain," says Golijov, "but pain seen from inside and from a distance." Despite being Golijov's reflection on today's tormented world, Tenebrae is a work of radiant beauty that offers consolation and a prayer for peace.

While they took their name from blues musicians Pink Anderson and Floyd Council when they started out as an R&B combo in the mid-60s, Pink Floyd's leader, guitarist Syd Barrett, soon began piloting the band through unprecedented sonic excursions typified by the title of their 1967 debut album's most celebrated track--the outsized instrumental "Interstellar Overdrive." Equally adept at composing catchy-sounding, Gothic-themed pop songs such as "See Emily Play," "The Scarecrow" and "The Gnome," Barrett seemed destined for greatness--that is, until psychedelic drugs got the best of him, and he abandoned the band to bassist Roger Waters and new guitarist David Gilmour. The rest, as they say, is history. --Billy Altman

5 out of 5 stars British psychedelia at its most wonderfully wigged-out.......2007-07-27

Before Pink Floyd became the ultimate 1970s prog-rock band, they were one of Britian's weirdest, most playful, and flat-out greatest psychedelic acts. Fronted by brain-frazzled acid head Syd Barrett, the Floyd's music sounded like the dreams of a gifted but sickly child, full of neon bursts of color and lush imagery. Barrett makes his guitar spit out fantasy-coated strings of sound, while keyboardist Rick Wright makes the music throb with wonky energy. Drummer Nick Mason and the bassist (some dude named Roger Waters) lend the songs an almost jazzy flourish, creating dazzling rhythms that make the proceedings flow like a river. The songs are great, too: "Astronomy Domine" is an infectious psych-pop confetion with surging bursts of melody and warbling vocals- one of the finest moments on the album is Barrett's decleration of "Neptune, Titan/ Stars can frighten!" Before the entire song slips into instrumental freak-out territory. Speaking of which, "Interstellar Overdrive" is an epic instrumental meltdown that delivers exactly what its title promises. "Lucifer Sam" is a wicked-cool strutter with some bizarro stereo panning and a slinky bassline. The dreamy flow of "Matilda Mother" and the stop-start dynamics of "Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk" are great as well. But really, just about everything here is fantastic- it's a shame that Barrett never managed to complete another album with the group. Fans of psychedlic rock will love this.

1 out of 5 stars Great album terrible IDIOTIC re-issue.......2007-07-04

First, let me say I love this album. Its beautiful, lovely, piquant, quirky, ripping, gripping, insane, rock n roll. Yeah! redgrevillea's review got it right when he mentioned this is art and the rest of the Pink Floyd albums are architecture in comparison. Its one of the few records from this time that has stood, and will continue to stand the test of time. It lives and lives up to it's reputation.

Fans of the later big budget corporate albums will be confused by this record. Seek corporate rock elsewhere you niny brains, there is plenty of that stuff out there. Tons of it. You are obviously in the wrong place.

Unfortunately, REALLY UNFORTUNATELY, this is a textbook example of how to screw a reissue up. Its hard to understand their decisions.

FIRST off leave off the best cut on the original album "See Emily Play" which is a psychedelic classic and maybe THE psychedelic classic of the era!!! DUH! ??? Its the first song on the original and sets the tone for what follows. SECOND change the order of the cuts putting the long instrumental cut that is more like later corporate Pink Floyd RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE... for no apparent reason??? I like Interstellar Overdrive. But it is probably the song that most original Pink Floyd fans will skip EVERY TIME and it shouldn't be right in the middle. Sid got it right the first time when he put it last. It works much better that way. The idiot who decided to reorder the songs is just that, an idiot. You ding dong, you know who you are.

The inclusion of out takes "Bike" and "Flaming" which are not on the original is a good thing. I wish they had included more out takes. There is certainly room for more of the songs from that era. Oh well I guess I'll just have to DOWNLOAD them if I want to hear them. Dumb. The original order should have been preserved and as many of the outtakes as they could fit should have been included at the END after Interstellar Overdrive, to differentiate them from the originals. If they had done that this would be a 6 star CD. The music is great despite the production.

One last thing. Syd's problems, contrary to popular UNINFORMED opinion, were NOT due to drugs. If they were, EVERYONE in Pink Floyd, most of their original fans, and a good percentage of this generation would have succumbed too. Think about it, 90% of the people who built the personal computer industry dropped acid and listened to music like this. Syd had organic mental disease. Every review that mentions that Syd was taken out by drugs should be suspect, because it doesn't take much insight to understand that's just TOTAL NONSENSE.

One star for this reason - so people who are searching might be able to find this, one of the few reviews that makes sense. However its still a great album. I'd want to own a vinyl original before I'd want this but if you don't have a turntable, then buy this and DOWNLOAD "See Emily Play." Maybe just download it all.

    4 out of 5 stars Floyd's Beginnings.......2007-05-27

Pink Floyd's debut LP released in 1967 sounded very unlike any other band around then. Inspired by the the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop's usage of electronic music (they produced the original Doctor Who theme amongst others), Syd Barrett came up with a medley of sinister nursery rhymes and ideas based on what was to be tagged space rock. Pink Floyd soon became recognised as the UK's first real live psychedelic band.

The excellent opener 'Astronome Domine' gives a good indication of what the Floyd sounded like then, with lyrics about stars, planets and underground caves. As to the best of the 'nursery rhyme' songs there are strange stories about 'Lucifer Sam' (Barrett's cat), 'Matilda Mother', 'Scarecrow' 'The Gnome' and a disturbing final track,'Bike', including accompaniment of ringing clocks and geese. It includes that wonderfully whimsical line "I've got a mouse but it hasn't got a house - I don't know why I call him Gerald".

Of the 2 psychedelic instrumentals, 'Pow R Toc H' has a slight jazzy tinge to it. The epic 'Interstellar Overdrive', is a joint collaboration by the whole band. Nearly 10 minutes long it is typical space rock, and needs repeated listening to really appreciate it. It does have some structure to it and the way the original theme gradually creeps back in is rather clever. The original LP version had more layers of sound on it, so this version on CD comes across a bit thin, unfortunately.

There is only one really duff track on the album which oddly enough is Roger Water's first and only composition here, 'Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk'. It truly is a mess. Thankfully his writing skills improved immeasurably after Syd Barrett's departure. But PATGOD's signature and originality lies with its main ideas man, the late Syd Barrett. Although the album in all honesty does sound dated now, for its time it was controversial, original and influential. After Barrett's departure and the addition of Dave Gilmour, PF began to evolve their sound (the follow up to PATGOD already sounded progressively different in style) but they always retained an element of psychedelia on their future albums and never forgot Syd Barrett.

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Introspective On The Summer Of Love By England's New Psychedelic Band.......2007-05-25

When Pink Floyd first started, they were more in outer space than down to earth. The year was 1967. A cultural and social revolution was going on at this time. This was the year everybody was wearing flowers in their hair, smoking pot, and spreading the gospel of peace and love in the midst of unrest and controversy. The message was to make love and not war. The idea was not to face reality but sort of drift off into a fantasy world where everybody loved each other and there was peace and harmony. Drugs were often that escape from reality. The musical movement that was rock 'n' roll also embraced this idea. Legendary recordings such as Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band were also released that year. British singers and bands were stealing away the popularity and influence that once belonged to American recording artists. The psychedelic movement was in full bloom in places like San Francisco and London. Pink Floyd was London's answer to the Age of Aquarius. They released their debut album The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. Astronomy Domine took your mind on an interplanetary journey. Interstellar Overdrive took you even farther out. The mastermind behind all this was founding member Syd Barrett. His role and influence in the band was monumental as he would provide the inspiration behind the band's later works such as Wish You Were Here. For those who equate Pink Floyd with getting stoned, this is the album. It has all the makings of taking your mind on a head trip. After Barrett left due to his problems with LSD and David Gilmour took over, leadership began to slowly sway to the direction of Roger Waters who took your mind out of the clouds and back down to earth making you deal with the harsh realities of the human condition. Though the band members did smoke some pot and did a little bit of LSD, they were never really drug-oriented. They never were really serious about topics such as science fiction and the occult. After the departure of Syd Barrett, they pretty much abandoned their "space-rock" image.

This album, which catapulted Polish composer Henryk Gorecki to into the international spotlight, takes texts born in pain and turns them into statements of affirmation through the use of music that ebbs and flows in mystic minimalism. The clear voice of soprano Dawn Upshaw, singing the Polish texts, is a large part of the success of this particular recording, but the music, contemporary without either dissonance or movie-music mawkishness, clarifies and uplifts the words. This is a moving and essential element of the modern repertoire. --Sarah Bryan Miller

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars a haunting symphony you won't forget.......2007-07-19

I was introduced to Gorecki in high school and I've been a follower ever since. His passion, his life and death (not quite) are written in Symphony 3.

Lento e Largo is cathartic to say the least- a message written on the wall of a Gestapo prison during World War II, how can you not be moved?

This work is truly a masterpiece of the simplest of notes and the most haunting of serialist styles. The overall effect of minimalism is long lasting.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful to work and cry by..........2007-07-06

Heard this in passing on an XM station - bought it immediatly! Love the work, very moving, actually even motivating. Wonderful composer with perhaps a deep, hurtful heart and experience.

Need more composers with this passion (hopefully not the same experiences)

5 out of 5 stars simfonija zalosnih pjesama.......2007-06-05

Word "sorrowful" doesn't mean "zalostan". Symphony of sad songs would be much better translation of the symphony title. Please, listen this splendid piece of music. It magic works every time. Again, again and again...

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2007-05-17

The music itself,is just wonderful. The symphony has been composed with such 'feeling, and the soprano Dawn Upshaw has a glorious voice. This C.D. is well worth a listen.Lea.

5 out of 5 stars Suffering at its acme.......2007-04-26

This symphony is poignant because it is the lamentations of three women. It is so rare to have the direct lamentations of three women, of women as for that. Most of the time such lamentations are indirect, captured through the eye and the pen of a man of some sort. Anne Franks are rare in this world. And Maries are just as little numerous. The first woman is this Mary herself expressing her sorrow on Jesus and his death. She wants to take over the wounds and the suffering. The second is the prayer of an eighteen year old girl in a gestapo cell in Poland where she must have lived her last days and hours, a prayer to the intercessor - Mary again - to help her live her death through. The third one is that of a mother who has lost her son to the war - we assume - or whatever any violent event and who thinks of her total state of forlornness that her life is going to be with no intercessor or accompanier for her to walk up to death, with no son anymore, not even a body, not event a grave, not even anything that could give some materiality to his existence, to her solace. Strange progression that then reminds us of the fact that the man-composer is the one telling us the story, unwrapping, unrolling and spreading out the three lamentations. Then the symphony reveals another story, another meaning. The admiration for both Jesus, the victim, and Mary, his mother. The immense communion in the serene and apprehensive suffering of the young woman standing on the threshold of victimized death, the man witness feeling horror surging up in his silent throat. And finally the man-composer disappearing in the last movement like the missing body of that boy taken away by a war or a revolution of some kind. Gorecki is able to recreate or rediscover the power of the compositions and singing of Hildegarde von Bingen. Entirely introspective, introvertly-oriented. The lamentation is addressed to the lamenting person herself. It is as if the whole horror of history was entirely contained in our own souls, minds and spirits, as if we were the alpha and the omega of the whole suffering plus every single moment of it in between, from this alpha to that omega self-contemplative lamentation. And her tears can become ours. And maybe we can share the deep gnawing evil of life for some transient moments.

This unique, 80-minute opera must be heard. The title means "Fountain of Tears" in Arabic and refers to the place in Granada where Federico Garcia Lorca was executed by Fascist soldiers in 1936. The work opens in a theater in Uruguay in 1969. As the actress Margarita Xirgu, who collaborated with Lorca in the 1920s and '30s, is about to go on stage, she recalls memories of him and his death and the survivor's guilt she feels. Musical images take us back as well. The sounds of hoofbeats, a fountain, and gun shots punctuate the otherwise beautiful, tonal, highly Spanish-influenced score, filled with flamenco and rumba rhythms. The vocal lines are all highly singable as well as dramatic. The work is mostly scored for women's voices: Margartita, sung by Dawn Upshaw; Lorca himself, sung by Kelley O'Connor; Nuria, Margarita's student, sung by Jessica Rivera. There is also an ensemble of women's voices that do most of the work. Margarita dies just before going onstage. The trio for her, Nuria, and Lorca is about as beautiful as anything you'll ever hear. "What a sad day it was in Granada / The stones began to cry" is a refrain that recurs throughout the opera, and the whole piece is sheer poetry. This is stunning. --Robert Levine

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Keeping Lorca Alive.......2007-06-24

This is a very remarkable opera -the first one- by Osvaldo Golijov. Ainadamar means 'fountain of tears' in Arabic, and it is also the name of an ancient well near Granada, where the poet Federico García Lorca was killed by the fascists in 1936, at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. The opera is divided in three parts called images: 1. Mariana, 2. Federico, 3. Margarita. Mariana referes to Mariana Pineda, one of the plays Lorca wrote that tells the story of Mariana Pineda, a revolutionary martyr of the 19th century. The second part is about Lorca, from the moment he refuses to go to Cuba with Margarita (and save his life), to the moment he is arrested and killed. The last part is about Margarita Xirgu at the end of his life, when she is keeping the history and the legend of Lorca alive by representing his plays.
In the style of Golijov, this music merges different styles (Jewish, Muslim, and Spanish music). Ruiz Alonso (the arresting officer) is a flamenco singer (Cante Jondo), and Margarita Xirgu is the soprano and Osvaldo's muse Dawn Upshaw. There is a good balance among the three parts of the opera and the three main characters in it (Lorca, Xirgu, and Nuria, a student who will maintain Lorca's life and art alive).
This CD comes with an introduction by Alex Ross and a synopsis by Peter Sellars. The libretto was written by David Henry Hwang in English, and Golijov translated it into Spanish. This is very odd, since the music is sung in Spanish and usually the librettos are written in the language the music is going to be sung. Also, the CD contains pictures of Golijov, Upshaw (2), Lorca, Xirgu, and two stage pictures of a live representation. The CD cover (as you can see) represents Margarita Xirgu in tears in the style of Lorca's drawings. It was designed by Hisako Moriyama. This CD is a world premiere recording by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra directed by Robert Spano and I strongly recommend it to opera aficionados, classical music lovers, and anybody interested in Lorca and the Spanish Civil War. Thanks for reading.
P.S. If you like my review vote YES. You can read all my other reviews if you wish to. I modestly write them to help people form an opinion about movies, music and books, but if nobody reads them (if you don't vote I do not know if you did) there is no point in writing them

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing, tantalizing - a must have for your collection!.......2007-06-19

In all fairness, I should first admit that I am in general not a fan of atonal, discordant "contemporary classical" music. Believe me when I say that this masterwork is not that. I had the privilege of seeing this masterpiece performed last year in Atlanta by Robert Spano conducting the Atlanta Symphony (with, I believe, all of the same performers who are on the CD). The live performance was truly captivating - it incorporated a large screen with striking images, the Spanish guitar players were quite interesting to watch (especially for those of us accustomed to orchestral performances), and Dawn Upshaw mesmerized the audience as much visually as she did vocally.
When the CD was released, I was initially hesitant to buy it, because I was concerned that it would not live up to the live performance. I am glad that I did finally buy it because I was very wrong. It is every bit as emotionally undulating as the visual performance - to me that is a confirmation of the strength of the vocal and instrumental composition. Yes, as one of the more negative reviewers points out, it is true that you can hear the influence of composers who came before Mr. Golijov, but great music is built on a historical foundation, and Mr. Golijov created something entirely new and remarkably appealing. It is an instant classic, equally good played very loudly on your stereo, or listened to on headphones.

5 out of 5 stars An opera Beginner.......2007-05-30

I don't know if you can call this work an opera but you can definitely call it a masterpiece. The story based on the life of Federico Garcia Lorca is touching full of emotions and historical remembrances.

The music is very different from what people are expecting from an opera but is still beautiful. I have to admit that the more I listen to this work the more I like it. If this opera was a book it would be the book I always keep in my bedside table.

Just give it a chance you won't regret

      5 out of 5 stars Excelente!!.......2007-05-17

      Excelente ópera del maestro Golijov.
Es interesante el contraste de sonidos y los riesgos que corre el compositor al integrar sonidos poco convencionales en este tipo de trabajo. Ampliamente recomiendo esta obra!!!

      1 out of 5 stars This year's model..........2007-01-01

For at least the fourth time I have read reviews of a new Golijov piece which proclaim a great melding of cultures, an urgent communication of feeling, all galvanized by modern means into something entirely new. Once again it sounds like slightly better than run-of-the-mill exoticism combined with a sincere desire to sound sincere. It's getting old.

Thee essential MMJ record. A voice that's both honey & charcoal, deep Southern gothic canvases with gracious acoustic and electric guitars, painterly strokes of harpsichord, harmonica, lap steel, drums swimming in the deepest, darkest, widest pools of reverb, dirigible harmonies that will have you weeping, incensed atmosphere so thick, it's absolutely biblical. '...there's an undercurrent of fatalist resignation that rolls over you like the late-afternoon summer sun' - CMJ. 'At Dawn could be the perfect soundtrack to a summer road trip, or just something you wrap around yourself on the way to work each morning. 14 tracks. Darla. 2001.

      1 out of 5 stars Awful - a review from outside Kentucky.......2007-05-02

I listened to "At Dawn" after having listened to "Z," which is their latest release. Like "Z," their songs ramble a bit and they go into long, drawn-out solos - a "jam band" if you will. However this album is much more crude and there is way too much reverb. Call me "urbanized," but the production values are poor and there is a lack of hooks throughout the entire length of album. The album is so long that the CD stops playing near the end on my computer's CD player - "Strangulation!" gets strangulated, and I don't even hear the bonus track. "Honest Man" is the only standout on the album, a blues-driven rocker that is unlike any other song MMJ has done. The rest, well - I'm glad it's in the past.

I am now listening to this cd for the first time, and i have to say I love it!!! The music is mesmerizing, almost putting me into musical nirvana. I recommend it highly, as highly as I have ever recommended any cd!!!

5 out of 5 stars Greatest album, maybe not even from this planet........2006-07-07

If you read my title, it sounds like I may be strange or just looking to be goofy, but after I saw My Morning jacket this year at Bonnaroo, I'm not totally convinced that Jim James and the rest of the crew is entirely human. The sound of Jim James and the dynamic sound of the band in full is beyond anything that should ever be possible from a mear mortal human being. The album, AT DAWN, has been one of my favorite five albums of all time for well over a year now, but it's an album that may possibly grow on a person for years, or maybe lifetimes, or maybe even reincarnated lives, etc. It hits the soul in ways I didn't think possible. I really don't think (aside from MMJ themselves) that any album will ever be made again that reaches this deeply into the human spiritual core. This album leaves me trembling and feeling reborn after every listen. I was late getting into My Morning Jacket, and now I can't stop thinking about them and it's almost odd how integrated their music is with my life. Appropriately enough, they have possibly the most fitting song in the history of life to describe how I feel about Jim James and the way the music makes me feel. To take an exact quote from the song "The Way That He Sings":

"Why does my mind blow to bits every time they play that song?
It's just the way that he sings,
not the words that he says, or the band.
Im in love with this soul, it's a meaning that I understand."

Those lines are the most appropriate lines I have ever heard. Because it's the way I feel every time I hear every part of that song, and of the album. Of course, I do love the lyrics and the band, etc, but there is something in the way that he sings that blows my mind to bits. Every song on this album is so beautiful and hypnotic that it could arguably stand out on any other album in music history. Please give this album many chances, and realize that it may take several listens before you even can get to the next level of the greatness of this album. I heard it almost four or five times, casually, before it started to hit me, and then one day, I immediately named it one of my favorite five albums; now it's my number one without any doubts. Only this band could top the effort of At Dawn. I really can't say any more about this album other than that it is just simply the most beautiful thing I have ever encountered in my life. This album is special, and the band is as much. I've only seen them twice, but please see them after you get familiar with at least a couple of their albums, and I promise you will come back home and play their albums more religiously than a priest reads a verse before mass.

4 out of 5 stars The perfect transition to "It Still Moves".......2006-06-27

My Morning Jacket has rapidly evolved over its 4 albums, and the evolution is fascinating to follow. Its 1999 debut album "Tennessee Fire" was a journey into Americana, almost entirely based on dreamy, accoustic songs.

The band's second album "At Dawn" (14 tracks, 74 min.), issued in 2001, eloaborates on the themes explored in "Tennessee Fire" in many songs such as the title track, "Lowdown" and others. But the band expands its sound greatly, introducing the electric guitar on the brooding "Honest Man", an all-out rocker on "Strangulation" and even a slight reggae sound on "Phone Went West", forshadowing the "Off the Record" song on last year's "Z" album. In retrospect, this album is the perfectly logical middle link between "Tennessee Fire" and its next album "It Still Moves", and a great album at that, albeit somewhat overlong at 74 min. Nevertheless, it's a must for any MMJ fan and it certainly won't disappoint the casual fan or any fan of great music.

My Morning Jacket continues to ascend the ranks in the music biz. It builds its reputation not just with great album after gret album, but with amazing live shows. When I saw the band most recently, at Bonnaroo earlier this month, it put on an epic, monstrous really, 3 hour set that started at midnight. It brought the house down with its tireless energy and great song selection (both originals and covers). MMJ will be heard of for many years to come, no question.

      5 out of 5 stars Love MMJ.......2006-04-21

Well, I love My Morning Jacket. From the first time I discovered them, about four months ago on iTunes, I have been hooked. I mean it's just something about the sound and the lead singers voice- it's magical. I'm a big Neil Young and Bob Dylan fan and this takes me to a updated version of that form. They are touring with Pearl Jam, so if you haven't heard of them many people will soon. I don't think the new material from the album Z is all that good, but At Dawn is excellent. Some favorite tracks are Hopefully, The Way That He Sings, Bermuda Highway and At Dawn. Do yourself a HUGE favor if you like slower rock songs with a psycadelic (spelling?) feel then you will love this band.

      Product Description

Rescue Dawn stars Christian Bale and Steve Zahn. It is written and directed by Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), based on his acclaimed 1997 documentary, Little Dieter Needs to Fly. The film will be released by MGM Pictures on July 4, 2007.
Rescue Dawn recounts the true story of German-born Dieter Dengler (Christian Bale), who dreamed of flying. After making his way to the United States, he joined the Navy during the Vietnam War and became a pilot. He was shot down over Laos and captured, but eventually organized a daring escape with a small band of captives.
Composer Klaus Badelt began his musical career writing and producing music for dozens of movies and commercials in his native Germany. Since moving to California at the invitation of Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer, he has regularly collaborated with Zimmer and other composers, and penned his own projects, including Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars One of Badelt's best!.......2007-07-16

This score is one of the best Badelt has ever composed. This score, even more so than his recent "The Promise," proves that he has his own immense talent beyond his work with Hans Zimmer. This work is quiet and subtle, rich and beautiful, mournful and hopeful. It's centered around a generously lengthy theme featured in the opening track, one that comes to a double climax in "Rescue." The song, unlike many on soundtracks, is well-integrated with the score and doesn't interrupt the listening experience.

If you like Badelt, or if you like scores like "The Thin Red Line", then "Rescue Dawn" is a must-have.

Take a look at the running times:

      Disc 1: 60 minutes
      Disc 2: 50 minutes
      Disc 3: 61 minutes
      Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

      5 out of 5 stars Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

5 out of 5 stars JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

Quentin Tarantino's trash-talking original soundtrack is fuelled by a greasy Tex-Mex theme. Starting with the Blasters classic "Dark Night," this album rumbles like a gang of renegade vampire bikers through a sharp new one from ZZ Top ("She's Just Killing Me"), a classy Jimmy Vaughan blooze ("Dengue Woman Blues"), an outrageous vignette by Cheech Marin, a couple of vintage Stevie Ray sides, and some rockin' Tejano tornados from Tito Larriva. --Jeff Bateman

3 out of 5 stars Question that no review has answered.......2007-01-29

This is not a review but a question: does this soundtrack contain the song the bar band is playing during Santanico Pandamonium's (Salma Hayek's) dance / seduction / prelude to vamping out? (That scene is so erotic, dreamy, and hypnotic.) Have been burned in the past by so-called soundtrack albums that leave off the most distinctive songs (haven't we all?), so just checking before I buy it. From reviewing the credits, I suspect this song is "After Dark" but I want to be sure. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Soundtrack Albums EVER.......2006-11-10

Front to back this soundtrack is dynamite. Watch the volume on Cheech's cut("Chet's Speech"). Might offend everybody within earshot. Tito and Tarantula are awesome and this is one of the few albums available that their music (just two cuts)is on. George Clooney's "Everybody Be Cool" must be played at maximum volume. "Texas Funeral" has become my all time favorite country ballad. I give this 10 out of 5!

I found the movie hilarious and entertaining, and the soundtrack is even better.I am a huge fan of the southwestern rock, and this CD is what I have been looking for. Chet's speech is one of the highlights of the album. There is one fault to the album, and that is the goofy song Texas funeral. It's just too damn weird. Besides that, the album is great.

I got this CD because I loved Robert Rodriguez's soundtrack for 'Desperado'. I like just about every song on that CD. I got this one because I like the opening title song and the barroom songs. I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised by the rest of the songs, but unfortunately I wasn't. The rest of the songs aren't bad, but they don't knock my socks off either. You also get Chet's speech, which is hilarious. The hidden track is the second part of his speech and should have been tagged on to the first part, which I find a bit annoying. Also, the barroom songs didn't seem as bright or peppy as they did in the DVD when I first heard them. This was disappointing. They sounded more studio produced then live. None-the-less, if you really liked certain songs from the movie and have to have them, I'd get this CD otherwise I might skip it.

1 out of 5 stars Sad, Really Sad.......2007-05-13

These CDs don't meet the standards that I expect from Elmer Bernstein's wonderful film music.
      *It's just Boring*
The ensemble doesn't have the energy one would expect to play "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Man with the Golden Arm". I think the City of Prague and National Youth Jazz Orchestras were bargain orchestras used to make an inexpensive CD set of one of my favorite film composers. The conducting and arrangements were what made this an obviously bad album.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent movie themes antology by ELMER BERNSTEIN.......2007-05-10

Silva Screen Records, presents this antology of the music from the late great composer/conductor ELMER BERNSTEIN, who supervised this recording just before die.
Played the The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by his one time assistant James Fitzpatrick
Recorded in HDCD and Dolby Surround

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-04-22

it's unfortunate that more tracks weren't able to be recorded as theree was a good 15-20 minutes of space remaining on both discs. Regardless, this is an excellent sampler, especially in conjunction with Varese's Bernstein sampler including rare stuff like the Black Cualdron.

With regards to this silva set, these recordings range back to 1994, with Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit being recorded for a John Wayne CD and Bridge At Remagen for a CD of classic War themes. The Great Escape was also recorded for that CD, but producer James Fitzpatrick opted to record a new arrangement (same with Magnificent Seven). In '97, The Buccaneer for included on a Swashbucklers disc, while Heavy Metal was on the popular 'Space and Beyond' compilation. In '98, the world premiere recording of Airplane first appeared on a DISASTERS film disc. So while it may technically be the world premiere RECORDING it certainly is not the world premiere CD RELEASE of that recording. Ghostbusters was included on Space 3: Beyond the Final Frontier, the second followup to the popular 'Space and Beyond'. Fast forward to 2002 and 4 recordings first appeared on WAY OUT WEST: ESSENTIAL WESTERN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION VOLUME TWO, those being The Comancheros, The Hallelujah Trail, The Scalphunters and The Shootist. Man With the Golden Arm and Walk on the Wild are from Silva's JAZZ IN FILM cd.

The remaining tracks were all newly recorded for this release. They are of course the strongest tracks, seeing as the City of Prague Philharmonic has improved over time. I do wonder though why they did not include the older arrangements of Great Escape and Mag. Seven as bonus tracks.

I also recommend the simultaneously released '40 years of Film Music: Jerry Goldsmith' for another great set honoring a late great film composer.

4 out of 5 stars Great Film Music.......2007-03-09

This is a great recording of some of the best film music ever. From the
great westerns to the Theme from Airplane to music he did for television,
Bernstein was one of the greatest.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Powerfull music.......2007-02-17

It's great! It brings back memories of my dad. He loved John Wayne and the old cowboys of the Magnificent Seven. But it's nice just to listen and relax (it's not all cowboy music).
