It's easy to come away of two minds about Treat Me Right. On the one hand, there's no question that guitarist Eric Sardinas has talent; one listen to "Give Me Love" will assure one of that. On the other hand, songs like "Cherry Bomb" and the title track give the impression that he's trying too hard. That's a shame, because the best material on this album is the stuff with that relaxed-yet-energetic feel that is so essential to good roadhouse blues. When Sardinas lays back and lets the music speak for itself, as on "Get Along Rider" and "Goin' to the River," the result is a good, solid, blues-rock effort. Unfortunately this tends to be overwhelmed by a cover of "I Can't Be Satisfied" that is neither loyal to the original nor a particularly exceptional reinterpretation of it, and guest appearances by Hubert Sumlin and Johnny Winter, while of interest, aren't enough to overcome the flaws here. It'll be interesting to see how Sardinas develops as a guitarist, but overall Treat Me Right leaves a very mixed impression indeed. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Bought 2 CD's at once.......2006-08-29

Being so impressed with the music from Black Pearls, I purchased this CD along with it. The Dobro king with strong vocals made me a believer.

4 out of 5 stars Sardinas rocks.......2004-02-26

I have all of Sardinas' CDs and Treat Me Right is by far the best. I call his style "blues on speed". I especially like Goin' to the River. I have seen his band in concert probably about 20 times now in the local blues bars and the CDs pale in comparison to his live act. He is a must see when he comes to your town.

4 out of 5 stars ***1/2. Not highly original, but pretty entertaining.......2003-11-16

Eric Sardinas is a very acomplished guitar player, and he lays down some blistering electric dobro solos on "Treat Me Right", his debut album.

Alternating between fiery, up-tempo blues-rock, mid-tempo blues a la Johnny Winter, and a few acoustic numbers, Sardinas demonstrates considerable chops, but not a lot of imagination, and there is nothing here that Winter hasn't done before, or that Stevie Ray Vaughan didn't do better.

That's not to say that "Treat Me Right" isn't worth a listen, though. Eric Sardinas is a good, if not extraordinary, singer, and he imbues his acoustic slide workouts "Goin' To The River", "Sweetwater Blues" and "Cherry Bomb" with loads of soul, as well as displaying excellent abilities as a slide guitarist in the vein of Son House, Muddy Waters and Fred McDowell.

He also does quite well by Muddy Waters' "I Can't Be Satisfied", and while his hamfisted pedal-to-the-metal-approach may draw comparisons with George Thorogood, Sardinas is a more accomplished and versatile guitar player, as demonstrated on his powerful rendition of Doctor Clayton's classic "Murdering Blues" (AKA "Cheating And Lying Blues"), and on the tough original "Give Me Love" and several other tracks.

Howlin' Wolf's magnificent lead guitarist, the ageing Hubert Sumlin, guests on a reading of "Down In The Bottom", and gets buried under Sardinas' amp-on-11 bombast, which is a shame.
Johnny Winter gets more of a say on his own "Tired Of Tryin'", but all in all, "Treat Me Right" would have benefitted from a little less wah-wah and a little more subtlety.

It's still good fun, though, particularly for fans of hard-rocking contemporary blues, but the three acoustic numbers are very enjoyable as well, in a "Bukka White meets Johnny Winter" kind of way.
Less sophisticated than Stevie Ray Vaughan but more so than George Thorogood, and good enough for some 3 1/2 stars.

4 out of 5 stars from a blues guitarist's view:.......2003-05-31

Eric's rocky slide-playing is like a never drying fountain of frantic, unorthodox blues licks. Like the early Vaughan he mixes rhythm and solo all in one or better to say: he changes very quickly between bass-groove and high single-note playing. Same with his confusing mix of slide-notes and finger-notes. Too fast for your ear to follow. Too groovy for your feet to keep from tapping. But forget about that academic classification of "rhythm" and "solo". Even his solo playing is more groovy than many "rhythm guitarists" play. And the band's timing is VERY tight and professional. Sardinas always hits the beat - his licks never loose their way, they never "die out" in the certain somewhere.
Check this guy out - he pushes the blues' horizons far into the future and at the same time reminds the listener on almost forgotten blues-roots. As blues is always in danger of getting boring when played without passion "Treat me right" is an example of how to keep such an album colourful. Within the distorted electric dobro sounds there is always some acoustic stuff now and then. And you have some acoustic percussion effects in some songs, like foot tapping, knocking on the corpus or even a slapping acoustic bass, sun records style.

So, is it really all great? Is he God? No, not yet. He definitely has to work on his slow-blues. The long breath is missing, if you know what I mean. It is all too nervous somehow. Not really mature, not really adult. Yes, the slow stuff is the point where Sardinas does not compare to Vaughan at all. And the voice? Well, this is a question of taste. A bit like Johnny Winter (who I prefer playing instrumentals). But lets put it this way: We do not buy a CD by a fantastic guitar virtuoso to expect a fantastic voice, right?

My favourites: cherry bomb, goin' to the river, I can't be satisfied, sweetwater blues
not so good: tired of tryin' (with Johnny Winter), murdering blues, low down love, get along rider

5 out of 5 stars Eric is HOT!!!!!!!.......2002-11-18

I absolutely LOVE Eric Sardinas. I have been in love with the blues for many years. Being a singer in a band, and having a guitarist as a hubster, I feel I must share with you how I feel about Eric Sardinas. One day I just happened upon this CD and I was LUCKY! He is all I listen to. His voice is rough and raunchy and fits the cutting slide hard-core blues he plays. This CD Treat Me Right is with me all the time. It's in my truck AND my home! I have introduced this CD to many people who have never heard of Eric and they are amazed and agree with me about how talented he is. He kicks bu-double-T!!!!!!!! Buy it, open your ears and turn it UP LOUD! Appreciate that he truly does RESPECT TRADITION!!!!!I believe this man is fantastic and has a style all his own.

5 out of 5 stars Probably Kim's last single for Nervous........2002-10-24

I love Kim English and think she is one of the best dance artists of the last few years. Along with Kristine W ,Amber and Ultra Nate she just shows maturity that most dance acts don't have. This is probally the last track for Nervous she will have released because she wants out of her contract with the label so they remixed this track originally found on the cd single of "Everyday" to great fanfare. The original Maurice Joshua Mix is the best--- still the Guido Osorio mixes are very energetic and quite good too. The radio mix(3:50) ,Club Mix(9:13) and dub mix(6:59) are in the same vain as Thunderpuss and that is quite good. This is the mixes that went to number one on the Billboard dance charts. The Jon Cutler Mix(7:24) is similar to the original mix in that it is more retro house in sound than the Guido Osorio mixes. Kim English Rocks.

5 out of 5 stars Big Bill at his Best.......2001-01-11

Recorded in France in 1951, William Conley "Big Bill" Broonzy was at the top of his form during this recording session, a solo-gig captured towards the latter stage of his long career. If you're looking for an entry point into the world of acoustic blues music performed by the original artists, then this is it.

I highly recommend this recording due to the clarity in which Big Bill's intricate finger-picking guitar style and heart-felt vocals are captured. The quality of the recording is very good compared to much of Bill's earlier repetoire. In fact, this is about as close to actually experiencing Big Bill play live as any of us will ever get.

My favourite cut is the last track, "Sixteen Tons", a traditional song recorded by many artists, including Pete Seeger and Merle Travis. From biginning to end, this is a thoroughly entertaining recording that will make you happy time and again -- this is the real folk blues!!!
