5 out of 5 stars Sousa's marches.......2007-06-28

Excellent CD! I'm happy with the speed in which it arrived at our home.

4 out of 5 stars OK, But Not As Good As the Original.......2006-08-12

It's OK, but doesn't have the quality of Sousa's original songs which were also played by a United States Marine Band.

I was totally happy with the CD. It was everything I expected it to be. Thanks Much

5 out of 5 stars This is so great!.......2005-03-27

This music speaks to my inner being, my father was a Marine with the ETC, and it was not an easy time. Music like this helped him think about how the best things in life are two doors down on the left, just a shade away from peace. I love this music, track 13 speaks to me so much that I am not sure if I have the time to listen as much as I want to! Such great music!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Sousa Collection.......2004-12-15

These recordings seem to date from the 1960s and reflect a style of play that is impossible to find today. Some people might consider the sound to be too bright, the entrances too aggressive. But I think this is more authentic for Sousa than what one generally hears today. Sousa himself is known to have preferred "enthusiastic" entrances from his players, to have favored an "orchestral" sonority for his band and to have played his marches in strict tempo with no ritards or tempo changes. That is what you have on this disc, which features the Marine Band under Lt. Col. Albert Schoepper, who also conducts on Volume 3 of Altissimo's Sousa Original series.

3 out of 5 stars Sousa.......2007-07-25

I love Sousa marches but this recording while comprehensive and cheep lacks much to be desired in the musical rendension. It lacks the spark and musicality of Sousa.

5 out of 5 stars Sousa By the Royal Marines.......2007-03-31

This is a great CD re-issue of the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music under Graham Hoskins. This band did a three LP series on Sousa marches some years ago that was better than most on this very well covered topic. Sousa march recordings will always come and go, but some like this stand out more than others. For one, there is nothing like the panache of a Royal Marines band. Their sound is a time honored development that gets passed from one generation to the next. Even as the number of RM bands continues to change and downsize, there are now about four bands left in the service, their sound quality continues to be superb.

When these recordings were made RM bands were still at their height in the British service and their quality was amazing. Most bands numbered over 60 in this period, and that is why many Americans may be surprsed at the volume of music produced here. This is not one of your small, though excellent regimental bands! Americans tend to think that British military band instrumentation is on the thin side. Not so here! Of course Sousa always sounds best with either the Allentown band or the US Marine band.

This CD is evidence of how popular Sousa has always been in the UK, and with RM bands in particular. The selection here on two CDs covers most of the standard Sousa fair, with a few different selections here and there. Unfortunatley there are none of Sousa's fine transcriptions for classical music, or selections from his operettas. This music is always wonderful to have in combination with the marches as it shows how much variety he was capable of in his compositions. For that kind of concert the reader is referred to the very fine collection of Sousa music being done under the Naxos label by the Band of the Royal Artillery.

Here you will find a solid collection of Sousa's great marches. Roughly a third of those 136 compositions are contained here. The Royal Marines give a sharpe and clear sound to these works which should certainly inspire. You will also get a very nice idea how RM bands sounded back in the 1980s. Graham Hoskins was a fine director of music, typical of the inhouse genius of the Royal Marines Band Service at that time. He took this band on a USA tour in 1985 with the Arygll & Sutherland Highlanders. Devotees of Sousa should enjoy these spirited versions of the march king's music as performed across the pond.

5 out of 5 stars Still Among the Best.......2006-06-01

I bought two audio casettes with these marches back in the 1980's and wore them out. These performances are hard to beat for virtuosity, enthusiasm, and sparkle. The sound quality is outstanding. And there are some marches that are rarely, if at all, available.

5 out of 5 stars How Sousa Should Sound.......2006-03-07

Great value 2 cd disc set cut in the early 1980's & remastered the sound of the Royal Marines Band is nothing short of terrific. Judging by the sound would not be surprised for this to be a combined double RM band. These 1st chair players give Sousa's great marches that extra kick that takes the "March Kings" music to that higher level. By the center quick march!!!!

5 out of 5 stars An essential for any good house collection.......2007-04-29

This is simply a great cd set. Can't say enough about how great the sound and consistency are.
First cd is very good vocal tracks with great production and sound.
Second cd is different with less vocals and impressive instrumental tracks.
This is Hed Kandi at its best.

3 out of 5 stars It's nowhere near as good as Beach House 2 or 3.......2007-01-12

It's perfectly acceptable and inoffensive, but it's not as good as the older beach house albums.
If you haven't got 2 and 3, buy them first before buying this one

3 out of 5 stars Very Downtempo and Funky.......2007-01-03

This CD lacked energy and put me asleep. It had a funky vibe that some may like, but it was not for me. I would not recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Beach House, a super compilation!! But..........2006-08-11

I always look very much forward to july-august, when the Beach House compilation from Hed kandi is released. It was the same this year. Very exited to here it, after Mark Doyle (former Kandi owner) has left Hed Kandi. In the beginning, about the first 5 times I listen to it, I wasn`t very exited. But then I started to feel the magic of Beach House.. Super soulful summer tracks for the beach, was comming out of my loadspeakers. Please give me more!!
About the cd`s, I will say the cd 1 is absolut my favourit, where I really don`t want to skip a single track. With some super fine tunes like "Rise" with Samantha James and "Heavens On Fire" with Luke wich is also to find on Es Vive 05 from Hed Kandi. I think this new version on Beach House is very soulful and much more groovy. Also to mention "We Should Fall In Love" with L.O.V.E feat. Malin Elino my top favourite song on this compilation together with "Sun Science" with Carzy Penis and "Did`t Mean To Turn You On" with Colette. If I could, I will give 5 stars to cd 1. When it comes to cd 2, I must say I`m a little disapointed. I think the tracks missing the soulful and groovy upbeat vibes with the latin twist you normal find on cd 2. Futhermore how can they put "Fade" with Solu Music, and "Black Waters" on again. These tracks a so superfine, but please leave them where they belong, and in the original way.. On the BEST Beach House ever! Beach House 04.02. At the end I will say as a Beach House Lover, this album is absolut worth every cent, and I keep listning to it over and over again. If You are into this kind of music, why don`t try Mark Doyle`s new started label out "Beach Angel" from Fierce Angels. I must say he still rocks. I will diffently call his new album Beach House Number 2 this summer!! Get it too, and the sun will shine on you all summer.

4 out of 5 stars Love going back to Beach House.......2006-07-26

I still enjoy the Hed Kandi CDs and even after Mark Doyle left, I have to oppose those who say that the quality is down. I don't feel the quality has gone down, it's just a little different and there is nothing wrong with change. I love the Beach House albums since in the past as they have introduced me to some addicting songs including an all time favorite of mine, Bonnie Bailey's "Ever After".

Some of my favorites in this album include "Rise" by Samantha James, "We should fall in Love" by L.O.V.E feat. Malin Elino, "In this life" by Kaskade, "Sun Science" by Crazy P, and "A Million Stories" by the Cuban Brothers. This album has a nice blend of some relaxing beach side music as well as some dance songs with more upbeat tempo. Both CDs given a good mix and neither is completely made of chill or dance. Overall, I enjoyed this album and definitely keeping it in my Hed Kandi collection.

The mixes on both the cd's are excellent. But disc 2 really stands out for me. Don't expext to listen to either one of these cd's and keep still, it's virtually impossible!

I'm an avid fan of house music, and know quality when I hear it. Both DJ's do an excellent job of conveying the "Beach" vibe on this compliation. Close your eyes and you can almost taste Miami :)

Keep an eye out for Justin Michael and Darwin...they are putting out some of the best funky and soulful house sounds today.

If you're looking to keep the party moving without missing a beat, pick up this disc. It's slightly better than the "Poolside" cd that was released last year.

This is the Sousa record for people who are serious about marches. Sousa was the greatest march composer in the history of, well, marching, and this disc includes many fresh and interesting pieces that will likely be unfamiliar, as well as a couple of favorites (including "The Liberty Bell," famous as the theme to Monty Python's Flying Circus). But by and large, this disc focuses on the less well known pieces, though there's not a dud in the lot. Sousa had a special gift for orchestration and for writing tunes with real rhythmic interest; his marches never sound dull. Frederick Fennell is the simply the best wind band conductor around, and these performances are standard- setters. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fennell Brings Out the Best in Sousa 's Marches.......2004-02-21

This is an outstanding CD. The sound quality is very good. The instrumental balance is very good. It's interesting to compare the rather subtle difference in the percussion section performance between the two recording dates, particulalarly the cymbalist.
Sousa had an uncanny ability to score the cymbal strike at places which add significantly to the listening experience.
Hats off to Sousa, Fennell, and the Eastman Wind Ensemble

4 out of 5 stars A solid Sousa album that comes up a bit short.......2003-01-26

In the 60s, Fennell and the Eastman Wind ensemble recorded a good amount of marches by Sousa, many released on this album, and the rest (as far as I know) on the album Hands Across the Sea. As many of Sousa's best marches are on that later album, this one falls a bit short of greatness -- but not my much.

Sousa knew his marches, writting something like 200 of them, and almost every one of these is a great example of how to write a good march. Indeed, The Liberty Bell and Manhatten Beach are two of my alltime favorite marches. However, being prolific often means that there will be misses, and many here, while written well, just aren't all that memorable. I'd be hard pressed to be able to identify such pieces as The Gallant Seventh, New Mexico, or the Black Horse Troop unless I had just listened to them.

Still, one has to admire the creative way Sousa sometimes put his music together. The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company uses the song 'Aude Lang Syne' for its trio, and it fits so well that it's hard to believe he didn't write it himself. The Liberty Bell uses tubular bells in *just* the right spots that it makes an impact every time one listens. And Sabre And Spurs uses wook blocks to simulate horses, which also works great.

So overall, this is a solid album that has its ups and downs. The sound quality is great, haveing a certain amount of 'bite' that's almost impossible with digital recordings, the playing impecable, and there's plenty of variety.

5 out of 5 stars The Mastery of Fennell.......2002-01-28

I've owned this CD for several years, and bought a copy recently as a Christmas gift. Frederick Fennell is a modern master of band and marches, and I own several of his recordings. What makes this CD a standout for me is the Mercury Living Presence recording and remastering method. I own over two dozen of this series because Living Presence does indeed represent a different method of producing music for the recorded media. It DOES sound more lifelike to me than conventional multimike recordings. To anyone considering purchase of this CD I'd recommend also ordering 'Screamers', the Living Presence CD of circus marches. To me this is feel-good music at its best, and terrific for listing in the car! Additionally, the Living Presence series stands out for its excellent liner notes with explanations of the Living Presence method. This CD is a keeper. Incidentally, the recipient of this CD has since gone out and bought several other Living Presence CD's after hearing this!s

5 out of 5 stars MASTERFUL RENDITIONS IN GLORIOUS RECORDED SOUND.......2001-11-16

An utterly masterful set, containing many of Sousa's unjustly neglected works. (An integral recording of his complete marches is overdue by a good half-century.*) Fennell conducts with incredible verve, and the Eastman Wind Ensemble responds in kind, with immaculately tight and polished performances. The recording is demonstration-class. Sousa has never sounded better, and probably never will.

*EDIT: Actually, a nearly-complete recording of the marches has been available, as of the time of this review, for at least a good quarter-century--first on LP, now on CD: that being, a series of analog recordings by The Detroit Concert Band, led by Leonard B. Smith. Currently available from Walking Frog Records (on five CDs), the DCB/Smith collection unfortunately suffers from some serious problems--not the least of which is the highly variable and substandard quality of the recorded sound.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic well preserved.......2001-09-28

This one's a Classic and the sound is remarkable considering
when it was recorded. Viva Mercury Records!

I do wish more of the familiar Sousa stuff was included.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band and Greater Music.......2006-03-18

Having taught music for 41 years, I do appreciate the quality of a good band, good music and a good recording. This series is all three! My only complaint is that the CD's are not long enough. I would like to have them last much longer. Enjoyed them very much!

3 out of 5 stars A Moderate Sampling of Sousa.......2003-12-04

Actually one of the better CDs of the limited Altissimo! line of products. At least we have the Marine band playing Sousa, as it should be, but many of the selections are what we have heard already on countless CDs of Sousa. A few of the selections here are different and worthwhile. The problems we encounter are a mixture of recording styles taken from different internal tracks from the Marine Band Library. These recordings were never intended for commercial use. Hence the un-even sound at times. Also the brief durration of the CD indicates as well that it was never intended for public use. Finally, lack of any worthwhile liner notes tops off a rather un-professional job overall.

5 out of 5 stars Start of a great series for Sousa admirers.......2002-09-07

The President's Own play these like no other ensemble. I don't know what the current occupant of the White House thinks about them, but this wind ensemble is a national treasure in my book. This whole series is highly recommended. They play with more energy than the fine musicians of the Detroit Concert Band who sound a little bored on the complete Walking Frog set. They are a much finer ensemble, playing with greater precision and balance than Kieth Brion's British players on Naxos. The only weakness is in the documentation. There is none. We are not even told who the excellent conductor is. But that doesn't prevent one from enjoying the inspiring performances. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Sousa Played as only the Marines can do.......2001-11-01

This release by Altissimo! is a great collection of Sousa Recordings played by the band that Sousa made great. There are tons of Sousa recordings out there, but none feature the US Marine band. Sousa marches don't sound the same until you have heard them played by the Marines. Sousa wrote many of these marches while bandmaster of the Marines, thus the reason why the renditions of these works are so excellent here. The band playes with a real drive and energy, the likes of which few can compare. While not a large selection of marches, this CD is only volume one of a four volume set of Sousa's music featuring the US Marine band. (...) Now more than ever, with our nation in crisis, we need the inspired music of our great service bands.

5 out of 5 stars Something very precious.......2004-11-16

John Philip Sousa was a great musician and a great American. These recorded relics are very fascinating, and sometimes most vivid, reminders of his greatness

5 out of 5 stars Great historical resource.......2000-08-24

This set consists of every recording released under the name of "the Sousa Band", from 1897-1930. Since some of these recordings are over 100 years old, they tend to be somewhat scratchy and occasionally faint. If you're a casual fan or you're buying your first Sousa record, your money can be better spent elsewhere.

However, these recordings are an invaluable resourse for students, performers, and teachers. Even with the limitations of early recording devices, there is no better demonstration of the style and nuance of the "March King" than these performances under his own baton. Also, the chance to actually hear Sousa's voice as he introduces the great "Stars and Stripes Forever" is to step into the past.

2 out of 5 stars semi sucked.......2006-07-10

gone fishin is the only good cut on the entire cd, there are some others that are "un-skip-able" but otherwise its a mindless background compilation of off brand bama no names. consistant fake neo-soul electric beat throughout the cd can be annoying if you have been there before. i would have been mad if i paid more than $10 for it. it serves its purpose as a stuck in traffic soundtrack, however, i find myself listening to "gone fishin" over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars NEO-SOUL AT IT S BEST !!!.......2005-05-18

Hidden Beach has done it again!!! This is one of best undiscovered neo-soul albums out there. It's the kind of album you put and everyone says: "Who is that?" Several undiscovered artists are ont his album.Every song and artist like Mike Phillips will keep you in that neo-soul music. If you're a lover of neo-soul, this album is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars A Taste Of Ambient Trans Music..........2004-12-01

I picked this up recently on a whim and I'm glad I did. It's a good "chill" CD which takes the listener on a journey deep in the mind's eye. My only negative point is after track #11, it slowly turns more techno and kind of ruins the state of mind I was in when I first put it on.

4 out of 5 stars Electro Latin Jazz.......2002-04-04

This is one of those discs that allows the listener to sample a variety of laid back tunes that fall under the loose category of "chill out music." The tracks are all very good examples and fit into a jazzy Latin niche. IMO it is more Acid Jazz than Latin. The exception being most notably Chi Chi Peralta's contribution. The redo of "Riders on the Storm" by you should know who has the dreamy qualities that rise into somewhat of a Photekish groove, pushing the original song into an icey new interpretation. The disc is perfect for a relaxed mind, background music for the times of your life. "Cava del Rio" by Senza is your typical psuedo Brazilian music complete with vibes and a chorus reminiscent of Cal Tjader meets Sergio Mendes for a nice touch. There are several "Brazilian" sounding songs. Senza is featured again with "Take it Down," this time with a Herbie Mann feel for an easy going blend of electro jazz. "Snake Chancer" by Gobi Tribe has a world music feel that falls into more of an Asian Dub Foundation sound than a Latin mix, go figure. "Exotic Erotic" by Baptiste Love Rug is one of those mixes that is a synth laced snyncopated groove that is forgetable but you gotta love the title and their name. The Washington DC based duo of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, better known as Thievery Corporation contribute with "Barrio Alto" for a guitar inflected mix sounding a bit like St. Germain. The song fits easlily into the package. All in all this disc serves the listener well for exposure to the artists featured and to present an unobtrusive mix of songs for the times between and after the times of your life.

5 out of 5 stars Finally A Great Chillout CD.......2001-11-30

This CD has it all: mood, music and a really cool cover. Other "Various Artist" compilations disappoint due to lack of focus...they slap chillout in the title and give little thought to the actual musical content. Cabana Beach Club sets a vibe and then rides along its own undulating wave...there was a lot of thought behind this. This CD has a lot of new stuff as well as a cool remix of The Door's "Riders on the Storm" and tracks by Thievery Corporation and Nightmares on Wax. Even Chichi Peralta shows up in an Ibiza remix. I first heard this in an ultra-trendy restaurant in Miami... the server said people ask about it all the time. This is a must for fans of chillout with a global beat backdrop.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2001-11-27

Great chill out album with latin edge, I especially liked the Riders On The Storm, Les Nuits and Cava Del Rio, great groove

5 out of 5 stars Sun Drenched Once Again.......2006-03-01

Nothing like the having the latest in this Great series of sound. Just like the first, these tunes take me back to the first time my wife and I heard them while dining at the coolest of cool restaurants in Cairns, Australia. Sun Drenched Baby!

3 out of 5 stars It's a business, not a disco !!.......2005-09-20

The Beach House collections have suffered over the years, the deep house sound that defined it has more or less dissappeared, lately being replaced with watered down pop tracks that could easily have been album tracks for mainstream artists (not neccessarily bad). It's understandable also, when you have dead lines to meet and when record companies like Naked Music isn't churning them out fast enough you have little choice but to use old (but still beautiful) tracks like Lisa Shaw's "Let it ride", Aquanote's "Nowhere" and Kandi favourite Afterlife with "Never before" here. The obvious highlights here are: Aya's "Sean", Kaskade's "Everything" and Late Night Alumni's "Nothing left to say". I'm excited about their new album of the same name, the dreamy vocal deep house which they're known for.

I want to also say that I admire Mark Doyle for his taste in music as much as being a business man. The way he milked his product is unmatched by any of his peers. I agree that during the last couple of years Hed Kandi's become just a bit too commercial, realising CD after CD in 2004/2005, wasn't this the exact thing they set out to oppose when they started out ? Even TV commercials in the UK !! But Mark Doyle knew it couldn't go on forever so grabbed as much money as possible even meaning filling CDs up with some substandard stuff, and good for him too I would do the same thing ! And what perfect timing - in the sleeve notes on this album, Mark Doyle said this would be his last album (probably meaning that he's sold his Hed Kandi project off and made loads of money), so as of the next collection onwards i.e. 'Hed Kandi 50' we'll be getting music that are being complied by 'The Hed Kandi Team'. The future collections have yet to be heard, but looks like the early Kandi magic will continue to be compromised due to commercial reasons.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Summer Nights.......2005-09-11

Like the reviewer below, I was surprised to find that this entry in the Beach Houses series was much different than ones in the past. It's still great though! It's got a more chilled out feel to it, for poolside listening, or just laying around. There's definately some highlights. The second disc picks up with a few dance numbers. Old favorites like Bonnie Bailey, Kaskade, Stonebridge, Late Night Alumni, Peyton and more make appearances on this two disc set.

5 out of 5 stars A whole new genre of Beach House!.......2005-08-10

I'll admit I was a little surprised when I first put this into my CD player. As an avid Hed Kandi fan and very partial to the Beach House series I was expected another hot dancey house mix of beach tunes, what I got was real mellow, almost chill out beach tunes! This was a surprise, but it didn't take long for me to realize how much I loved the change. These songs still have rhythm, they still are perfect for listening to while getting a tan or splashing at the beach, but without the pulsing beats.

"A New Start" and "Undone" are definately some of the more relaxing tunes from the first CD, with the latter being tranquil enough to put you in sun-kissed slumber. Now don't compare these songs to the Winter Chill series or even Served Chill because they do have bass, but it is light enough to provide a relaxing, exquisite summer by-the-pool experience.

CD2 appears like it might gain energy with tracks by such dance artists as Stonebridge and Aya, but actually it's just as mellow as the first disk. Some of my favorites songs on this CD are "Back To Us" "Everything (Big Room Mix)" and "Nothing Left to Say" by the fabulous Late Night Alumni. "In My Arms" is also a kinda fun song that includes samples from the old hit "Betty Davis Eyes"

I couldn't say this is the best of the Beach House series just because it's so different from the others. Although I will say that I enjoyed every single song on this one, whereas I would often skip to the "stand-outs" on the previous Beach House compilations.
