4 out of 5 stars I can be sweet and good and nice...........2007-03-11

Next to "Indigo Girls," this remains my favorite CD from Amy and Emily. From "Three Hits" to the elegiac "Cedar Tree," the emotional weight of "Rites Of Passage" seemed greater than any of their other records. As much as I liked Dire Straits' original version of "Romeo And Juliet," Amy's raw exuberance won me over to their cover for keeps.

They also kept up their social barometer. The pro-peace "Galileo" (with harmonies from Jackson Browne and David Crosby) called for nuclear disarmament during a time when protest songs weren't a particular norm. "Jonas and Ezekiel" prays for peace in the Middle East (funny how that problem remains as timely now as it did in 1992). There is also a line in "Let It Be Me" that rings out as pure folk:

"The President has no good idea
of who the masses are.
Well I'm one of them among my friends
trying to see beyond the fences
of our own backyards."

The political and personal mesh throughout "Rites Of Passage." "Ghosts" is a beautiful love song that cries for tolerance. It probably ranks among my favorite IG songs. "Chickenman" and "Airplane" also explore their Southern Roots (I could have sworn "Chickenman" was an REM song the first time I heard it).

The re-master on "Rites" is first rate as well. It brings out the definition of the acoustic instruments. "Romeo and Juliet" now explodes from the stereo. While I also have to admit, I really don't think the live cuts add anything to the CD as a whole. I will continue to recommend "Rites Of Passage" as a pinnacle in the Indigo Girls' career.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST have for every collection!.......2006-08-26

Beautiful music, intelligent lyrics, what more could you ask for. I first heard this album at the tender age of 14 (I am almost 30 now) while I was working at a music store. One of my coworkers was obsessed with this album and kept playing it in the store. After awhile I realized I was singing it at home and school, and I bought myself a copy.

I love music, and own an uncountable number of CDs. But I think I can safely say THIS CD is my favorite of them all! The lyrics are intelligent and elegantly crafted, the music is moving. Galileo (with it's make you think factor) is my favorite song on the CD, with a romeo and juliet coming in 2nd for it's humor factor. Ghost can make you feel emotions stir at your very core if you have ever lost a lover. After 16 years of hearing Ghost, it can still make me cry.

This CD is great for taking in the car, especially on long drives. Do yourslef a favor and get this one.

Yup, this is the album I'd choose to listen to if I had an hour of consciousness left before dying. It's that good. And if I only had five minutes? I'd listen to "Love Will Come To You"... and happily expire.

5 out of 5 stars best indigo cd .......2005-11-22

This is my favorite Indigo Girls cd because it was a mainstay during my college years and a lot of fond memories can be associated wih it. Indigo Girls have incredible talent and they work together beautifully to make some lasting songs. My favorites include Romeo and Juliet (from AC/DC's hit), Love Will Come to You, and Three Hits. Galileo is the most popular song on the CD and is very soothing. The Indigo Girls also have other great CDs such as thier single Closer to Fine, and Swamp Ophelia but this CD is the best for an introduction to their music. I hope you enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Pinnacle.......2005-03-18

"Rites of Passage" is Indigo Girls best album. It's a classic.

I need to make one point thought. Amy Ray has never needed to "catch up" with Emily Saliers as a songwriter. She wrote six of the ten songs on the famous "Indigo Girls" album including "Secure Yourself", "Kid Fears" and "Tried to be True", all classics. She also wrote "Strange Fire", "Welcome Me", & "World Falls (Nomads, Indians and Saints), all great songs. If anything, Emily needed to catch up to Amy on "Rites", not the other way around!

Fans of Georgia duo Indigo Girls are dedicated to this act for very specific reasons: there's the rare (bordering on brilliant) harmonies and counter melodies, the seemingly effortless acoustic guitar playing, and a host of emotionally cathartic lyrics that make the listener feel like they've been reading someone's diary. That said, the Girls reached a point around the time of this album where opening up their souls for song perhaps felt less appealing than general storytelling. Does that make the music bad? No, but it is decidedly different; 1992's Rites of Passage comes off more as a musical jam than a night alone in front of a campfire. The Roches, Jackson Browne, David Crosby, and Lisa Germano all contribute to that effect, providing a musically interesting but perhaps emotionally less challenging effort than some of the duo's earlier works. --Denise Sheppard

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums ever.......2005-10-10

It should be a rite of passage for every person to listen to this album from the Indigo Girls. I really love every song on this CD.

Three Hits is a nice enough start, with great lyrics and rhythms. But then we go right into Galileo which is one of my favorite songs. The harmonies are gorgeous, the melody is great, and the lyrics are just so engaging. Is there meaning for the fears we have? Why do people maintain their superstitions? How long till my soul gets it right?

But that's not enough - Ghost is incredibly poignant and is a song that got me through many rough times. You can sing along with it at the top of your lungs, knowing that the Girls knew exactly the pain you feel. Those smooth harmonies are just brilliant.

It keeps going. Joking is another pain-and-angst song, shouting back your anger and sadness at an ex. Love will Come to you has the most amazing visuals in it, me myself with my face pressed up against love's glass.

Romeo and Juliet has just the right amount of attitude in it, for a twist on the classic tale. Even the "later songs" on the CD hold their own. Chickenman is one that seems bizarre at first listen, but has the most catchy tune you've heard in a long while.

Highly highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars _THE_ essential Indigo Girls album.......2003-10-03

I just saw on Amazon's "Essential CD's" section that they didn't have "Rites of Passage" on it - that's so wrong! If you get only one CD by the Indigo Girls (that isn't "Retrospective", which gives you a smattering of songs from all their albums), get this one. It is them at their most beautiful, folky, gorgeous melodic period. (Happily, I had the privilege of seeing them perform both acoustically and plugged-in during that period.) Admittedly, "Swamp Ophelia" is a very close second, though. THe strongest tracks on "Rites" include, but are not limited to, "Ghost" and "Galileo". They're just great. Get the album - and "Swamp Ophelia" too, while you're at it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best recordings ever captured!.......2001-12-14

I am a huge music fan. I have had this CD for years, and recently popped it in for the heck of it while cleaning my house because I hadn't listened to it in a few years. How could I have forgotten? When it got to Romeo and Juliet I froze in my tracks. Never in my life have I heard a more emotional recording. It is the closest thing to perfection I have ever heard. I swear that after recording that song that they must have had to send in a janitor in to mop up Amy Ray's guts because they were all over the floor.

This CD is amazing and beautifully recorded. The lyrics blend perfectly with the music. I encourage you all to rediscover this CD, and if you don't own it, rest assured that your money will be well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Every song a winner.......2001-06-28

This is my favorite Indigo Girls record. Unlike some of their other albums, every song here is a winner. While it does not quite have the energy of their debut release ("Indigo Girls") it is a more open and approachable album, both acoustically and in terms of thematic content. It has a number of beautiful songs, like "Ghost" and "Cedar Tree", yet these are performed levelly without being cloyingly sentimental or preachy. It also has some songs like "Joking" and "Jonas and Ezekiel" which really rock without being as "in your face" as some of Amy's songs from other albums (e.g. "Come On Now Social"). I can listen to this album endlessly.

Well, I bought "Shamans Breath" a while back...and all I can say is Wow! I never heard of Professor Trance until recently. So I thought I would try this one. The music is excellent. I would give it a 5 except, the songs are too short. The lyrics I could do without, but the more I listen to it the more I understand what Frank Natale is doing. I understand the concept. It is a good CD don't get me wrong. I guess I am comparing it to "Shaman's Breath", which blew me away.

I think anyone who enjoys Nomad or Professor Trance will enjoy this CD. It grows on you. Who knows if I wrote this review 2 weeks later maybe I would give it a 5.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Roger gives us more than a Little Bit.......2006-09-16

I heard about this Release during an Interview with Roger on NPR late one night back in 1997. He previewed a few of the tracks on that Radio Show and I knew I would purchase this CD "Rites of Passage". A few months passed and nothing appeared in the Record Shops, I would have to explain to the young clerks who Roger Hodgson was, have them look this new record up on their Computers under Roger's name and/or Supertramp to be told time and time again nothing was available. Over a year after I listened to the Radio Interview I located "Rites" as an Import CD and not untill 2003 did I see this release in a Record Shop.

After all the Fuss of trying to find "Rites" I am very happy to be one of the Lucky Ones who own this Fantastic CD. "Rites" is a Live Recording from the Miner's Foundry, Nevada City, Ca. where Roger has lived for over two decades now. The Hometown crowd is very happy to see our Hero and he has a Stellar Show most of which is captured on this CD. As I still enjoy Supertramp and I'm glad
they still perform, it's not the same without Roger Hodgson.

That said "Rites of Passage" is a Great CD and of the many thousand of Recordings I own. This is easily one of the Best things I have in my collection, I do hope more people will be Lucky enough to hear this great work, but I doubt it.
New songs "Every Trick in the Book", "Don't You Want to get High", "Time Waits for No One" and "Red Lake" take their place right besides the Supertramp Classics: "Logical Song", Take the Long Way Home" and "Give a Little Bit". This is timeless Music, the Sound & Production are Stellar, the band is in top-notch form (including Roger's son Andrew). This is one of the Best CD's you have never heard.
FIVE STARS...

4 out of 5 stars Roger's Rites Of Passage.......2004-11-02

After taking several years off from the music business, former Supertramp singer Roger Hodgson got back into the saddle with 1997's "Rites Of Passage," a live album recorded near Hodgson's home of Nevada City, California, featuring 8 new, previously unheard songs, plus a few Supertramp hits and a couple of other songs contributed by Hodgson's band members (including his very talented son Andrew Hodgson, who plays drums for most of the album). "Rites Of Passage" isn't really a "proper" new album from Hodgson, but it's a very excellent live performance, and the new songs are great, including the catchy "Every Trick In The Book," the punchy "Showdown" (which Hodgson would later record for his 2000 album "Open The Door"), the beautiful "Don't You Want To Get High," and the magical, majestic "Time Waits For No One." Supertramp faves "Take The Long Way Home," "The Logical Song," and "Give A Little Bit" are all given superb treatments (featuring 'Tramp sax man John Helliwell), and there's also a terrific moment as Hodgson steps aside and lets his son Andrew take a solo spotlight at the piano & microphone with his very lovely song, "Melancholic." For any diehard fan of Roger Hodgson and Supertramp, "Rites Of Passage" is a major treat.

4 out of 5 stars See and listen to Hodgson live, being the sound of Supertramp.......2002-11-23

I have already talked to you about the ability of Roger Hodgson to recreate the fascinating old moods by Supertramp, live on stage (listen to his new tracks "Time waits for no one" and "Every trick in the book"), but also during the reprisal of classics by his former famous band, when He recaptures so well such pretty musical atmosphere!! (see also my review of his CD SINGLE"Open the door", where I have described my sensations during a live performance that I saw in Milan-Italy 1 year ago).

Well Roger is the sound of Supertramp and the true Supertramp don't exist without him!!

Recommended for the lovers of tasteful, dynamic and aggressive pop!!

5 out of 5 stars Roger Returns With A Vegenance.......2001-06-11

Roger returns to the music scene with this great live album. Anyone who has seen Roger live can attest to the love and magic that he brings to the stage. Rites of Passage is indeed that for Roger. This artistic triumph proves that Roger is ready to be the force that he once was when he was with Supertramp. His new songs, like Time Waits for No One and Every Trick in the Book recaptures the magic of his music. He also plays some old Supertramp classics and In Jeopardy (from his first album - In the Eye of the Storm).

Welcome back Roger! We missed you.

4 out of 5 stars Better than Supertramp.......2001-06-10

This collection of great songs in concert, inc. unrealeased songs and classics like Give a little bit. A full colour live album; remaining the atmosphere of Supertramp gigs. Hey, Roger, what about returns to Uruguay. The presentation of Rites in Montevideo was unforgettable. Buy it now.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD 4.4.......2007-06-08

Doubt anyone will ever see this, but these guys are so under rated its pathetic! I still love this cd, many years after...
Dawn over Zero starts it off and is a great melodic track.. Best songs are Sacred, Mary and Is Freedom Slavery?... But the whole CD packs a hell of a punch..
Unfortunately these days no one stands behind their bands. Even in the 90's when this came out, they didnt get the promotion they needed. Its too bad. They were a great Rock n Roll band and i miss them ..

5 out of 5 stars If they had come out in1968, we'd have them on our walls........2005-07-24

Why is "technically proficient" often synonymous with boring? Don't ask these guys! They're Berklee (Boston) worthy and are anything but boring. After their release, Guilty of Innocence (the perfect blues/rock album), they came back with a record I was waiting for G-n-R to put out. In no way is LAO stealing the GNR sound, but the two bands do come from similar influences. They have a Page/ Van Zant/ Clapton/ 1940's blues sensibility. They don't have the rambunctious "FTW" attitude that GNR's 'Appetite' displays. Instead, they have a socially conscious lyrical quality that you may expect from a folk-rock act- kinda like Neil Young. Anyhow, the track list: Dawn Over Zero marches in with a subtle display of the band's talent's. Seemingly inspired by the Gulf War, the song looks at combat through the eyes of a soldier. Why Would You Lie... begins to unleash Shane's vocal abilities and the swinging guitar riffs this band is known for creating. Hope and the Hunger and Sacred have introspective lyrics and a patient development. Meaning: For as talented as these guys are, the songs are good solid compositions and not flashy show-off jams (which LAO is totally capable of doing and doing well). I love that this band knows how sometimes, "less is better." Track 5, Truth About Me, bursts with a piano that would bring any crowd to their feet. I hear honkey-tonk, country, blues, southern fried rock: everything that is rock and roll. This style is showcased throughout the album. I can't go through every song but the entire record is fantastic. Between this and Guilty of Innocence, you will find no guitar technique unused, no lack of vocal talent, no faults. From the rhythm section to the harmonica this is everything a rock and roll fan could ask of a band. Guilty of Innocence is a better, more explosive record but Rites of Passage is no second rate album. You could teach someone the history of rock and roll through the band's guitar tabs. Hence- the 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Kick-Ass and take no prisoners.......2004-09-24

If you want music with influences of Aerosmith, Lynard Skynard, Led Zep. and old-time Memphis blues, this is the band for you. Imagine a band full of talent and the song writing to match. These songs kick-ass and do it with feeling and emotion. It's a shame this band never made it big. They were much better than most other hard rock bands from the 80's and early 90's. I even saw them blow Guns n' Roses off the stage at the Limelight in NYC.

Buy this album and their 1st release. Listen to them. And then feel sorry for yourself that they are not still around.

5 out of 5 stars Great Rock/Metal from a band that ended to soon.......2006-01-20

I first heard Sacred Rite way back in 1989 at the age of 14 from a friend who had the tape Is Nothing Sacred and didnt like it. So i took the tape home and judging from the cover i thought it was Death or Thrash metal, i was dead wrong it was neither really. There was no such name in 89 as "Power Metal" so i really didnt know what to call it, but i knew when i popped it in and heard I4NI, it was classic. Although an instrumental song i still though man these guys are a combo of metal and jazz fusion. Then once i heard the singers voice i was like man this guy can sing, his voice is so smooth that you can't hear any grit or struggling in the way he sings his notes. Right away i loved the whole album, and let many people hear it. To some it was awesome to others so so, but to this day this album remains one of the great lost treasures of Rock/Metal music. All talented musicians and not one bad song on the album. I just ordered it off of ebay for 12 bucks, with these extra songs, because my tape was so worn out it wouldnt play anymore. So looking forward to hearing it digitally remastered. Get it, you'll enjoy.

      3 out of 5 stars 80's Metal from Hawaii.......2005-07-04

Before I was the big time punk rocker that I am today, I used to live in Hawaii & rock out to metal. In the 80's this band played straight up metal & were probably the biggest band around the islands! This may not be as great as Broken Man or Beat Your Kids, but it is much better than all of the nu-metal crap the kids are listening to

5 out of 5 stars Uncompromising post-bop, not for casual listeners.......2003-03-05

Jackie McLean demonstrated that his intensity and passion had not diminished on this 1991 release, and his abrasive tone had only grown more distinctive over the years. Son Rene joins him, alternating on tenor, alto, and soprano saxes, to form a strong two-horn front on eight of his originals and two by pianist Hotep Idris Galeta. Bassist Nat Reeves and drummer Carl Allen offer solid support as they blast through these tunes with no-holds barred. "Rendezvous in Congo Square" closes out this show of strength with a knockout punch.

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing CD.......2001-07-25

This is a must-have for any true Indigo Girls fan. This was the first CD of their's that I bought and I fell in love with their music the first time I listened to it. Each song is magical by itself, but taken together, the songs make Rites of Passage a beautiful, poignant, and all around incredible 60 minutes journey.

5 out of 5 stars More Amazing Music..........2001-06-30

Other than Galileo, most casual Indigo Girls listeners don't know the gems that are on this album. Ghost, Love will to Come to You, and Virginia Woolf highlight Emily's ballad talents. Romeo and Juliet, Three Hits give us previews of Amy's *ROCKING* future. Although there's been lots of new additions to the Indigo Girls collection, this is still one of my favorites to pull out and sing along with.

      5 out of 5 stars Overproduced magic........2001-06-06

On the heels of their breakthrough albums "Indigo Girls" and Nomads, Indians, Saints; they came out with album that was slightly overproduced and less raw than the previous three albums, but it still contains alot of magic that should not be missed. Each album by the girls seems to contain a radio friendly track and hear it is Galileo. Although there are plenty of other songs that could have made it, that is what seems to make the girls so intriguing. They don't seem to push themselves too hard or tkae themselves too seriously but rather rely on the fans for their support. The songs here are gorgeous. I am not sure I would say that about any of their other albums than thisone with the exception of some songs off of Swamp Ophelia. The songs here are smooth and catchy and very sing along. Amy Ray does a cover here that is worth mentioning "Romeo and Juliet"- a cover of the Dire Straits song that is worth the price alone for this album.

      5 out of 5 stars A timeless Indigo classic.......2000-10-11

Out of all the albums they have released, this has to be my favorite. The extra live tracks of three hits and love will come to you are rare. They never seem to perform these songs anymore in concert. Hearing them live demonstrates how talented and creative they are. Their lyrics and beautiful harmonies are like no other:)
