Mixed Live

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Longevity and creativity go hand in hand in the land of DJs, and Carl Cox is a prime example. Around since modern techno's infancy, Cox has spun his way through every shift and twist in popular beat culture, staying a step ahead of the pack with a deep love of house-funk, an astute sense of timing, and a penchant for fearless experimentation. With beats so phat he needs three turntables to keep them all together (a technique he pioneered back in 1989), Mixed Live is Cox in his element, pouring out relentless house to a delirious throng of sweaty, bouncing bodies. The beats on this record do not mess around in the slightest, eschewing the peaks and valleys of a modulating beat structure to better connect with the dance floor's primal sense of rhythm. The bits and pieces of records he spins on this disc are uncommonly obscure, unknown, and Richie Hawtin-intense, incorporating an almost industrial sparseness. His set gets funkier as it winds along and re-emphasizes the soulfulness that's always at the heart of Cox's style. But make no mistake--this is deep, deep house, delivered with maximum velocity and supreme mixing skills. Mixed Live is textured and creative, yet viciously direct, mainlining giant, thumping energy right into the bloodstream. It's what Cox was put on Earth to do, so shut up, dance, and forget about everything else. --Matthew Cooke

DJ Baby Anne brings the nu breaks style to Las Vegas for Mixed Live, part of the Moonshine label's ongoing series of recorded live sets. Like past entries in the series from Carl Cox and AK1200, Baby Anne's dirty, intensely danceable sound works well in this format, effectively conveying the kinetic energy of her act. A combination of breakbeats, drum & bass, and old-school techno, nu breaks has an organic, retro feel that Baby Anne gets just right. Tracks like Sharaz's "Brain Damage" and Merlyn's "Solar Flares" share minimal textures with snap-and-crackle beats, while Baby Anne's self-produced "Down To Zero" flirts with Fischerspooner-like electro. She's also willing to get evil for darker material like "Nightmare 2002," which gives her set some variety, and the crowd a chance to gather itself for the next big break. As a further bonus, the CD comes with a 5.1 Surround Sound DVD, to give you an even stronger "you-are-there" feel. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

Club Ra, located in the Luxor Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip is one of the city's premiere venues. Baby Anne laid down her signature Big Breaks sound to a packed house on February 28th, 2003. We were there to record the mix and capture the crowd reaction from all corners of the club. The end result is another unique installment of the world's only truly live dj-mix series in 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound - Mixed Live

5 out of 5 stars Confusion.......2006-01-30

Which song on this cd has the lyrics welcome to the state of confusion?????????????????? Listened to the cd a long time ago at a party and thats the only one that sticks out in my brain.
If you know e-mail bout_b@hotmail.com thanks later

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-06-05

One of the best breaks cd's I own. Tracks 1,4,7,9,and 11 could make an awesome cd alone.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Nu Skool .......2005-05-11

If your used to hearing other Baby Anne albums, you will notice that this one is slighty different. On this live album, the bass queen uses the "Nu Skool"type of breaks which features old school techno mixed with breakbeats, creating an awesome bass monster of an album. What makes this cd so good,is that it was recorded live at RA in Las Vegas, and the crowd screaming in the background really adds life to this mix.If you like dance music, you want this cd.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best........2004-02-16

WTF is going on with my beloved Bass Queen??

The last two cd realeases have been weak in comparison with the first 3.

I remember the release of Bass Queen vol.1, it was like a breath of fresh air. It would turn my car/home into a local club(New Orleans). This is true no longer.

Once a never miss a local gig Baby Anne fan, I do not intend to go out of my way to see her play here. Her recent set at the House of Blues was lame in my opinion.

Maybe I'm expecting too much, or maybe Im still caugh in the breaks sound I so loved in 1998-2001 but something is definitely wrong here.

The few decent tracks on this live mix cd were played out long before the release of this mix. Maybe it is because breaks are so popular in my local clubs that this did nothing to move me, but 5 stars some of you, gimme a break!

Bass Queen, what happened? Is it your fancy new record label contract? Come on, you can tell us. Why are you releasing these cds?????????

5 out of 5 stars If you like break beat it does not get any better than this!.......2004-02-01

I have been a fan of Baby Ann since she broke out through Icey. I think this is by far one one the best mixes she has ever put together. It will make your subs beat and you hi's scream. Very awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Time Capsule.......2006-11-30

The voices and instruments, like the songs, are straight from the mid-19th century. If you want to be transported back in time 150 years to a wonderful parlor performance of Foster's songs, this is the album to do it. The voices are marvelous and trained, and one must imagine that the strict phrasing and style are what one would have expected at the time. The cheap upright piano is perfect.

But the one perfect moment for me is the ONLY good extant rendition of "Was My Brother in the Battle?". Accompanied on a harmonium or pump reed organ, if this song doesn't tempt a tear, you simply aren't a romantic.

Very highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Unexpected.......2005-11-26

Quality of this recording is fantastic! Performances are superb! However, they don't fit being an example of Foster's music and times. I was expecting banjos and a Mississippi Sound - therfore, very, very disappointed in this CD and consider and a waste of money. Be sure to LISTEN to a few examples to match what you are looking for and what the CD offers. I, unfortunately did not listen before I bought. I rate this low only because my expectations were shattered. This IS a fine CD if opera styles are ok for an example of this southern, 1800's composer's work.

5 out of 5 stars An album to treasure.......2004-09-23

The landmark Library of Congress album, now on enhanced CD. Years
ago, I went on a six-months field assignment to a remote area of
Africa, where I could take only what music I could carry in a vest
pocket. I chose a tape player and two albums: a recital by Perlman
and this album on tape, and was content. If you love American
music, sung poetry, beautiful singing and deeply moving musicality,
this is an album you will treasure for a lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars A classic recording of American songs.......2004-08-22

What can I say that hasn't already been said below? I only wanted to reiterate how wonderful this album is and assure the reader the sound is spectacular on CD. This is a live recording, and intentionally so, as the idea was to create a "parlor" experience as these were parlor songs to be sung by family and friends around the old upright piano. I especially liked the comment about the upright piano which, indeed, does croak and clank throughout the performance adding a note of "authenticity" without becoming obtrusive.

If only Ms. DeGaetani had graced my parlor...

5 out of 5 stars The sessions of sweet silent thought stirred.......2003-11-22

I have never heard such unadulterated extraworldy sound emanate from two human voices and what would otherwise be firewood (the period instruments played by Gilbert Kalish). It stirs profound patriotism and a deep sentimentality for our early days when a civilized people pined to find virtue by examining its own body-- the north and the south, the small town, the simple flag, and the beauty of gentile manly and womanly love expressed through equisite song. There is no other music I would rather hear 'when summoning up the remembrance of things past.' The ghost of the early American parlor will prick your skin through these simple hymns and you may escape for a moment our troubled and busy times.

4 out of 5 stars Doesn't deserve a bad rap.......2004-11-18

This disc does not deserve the bad rap it gets. Yes, it is not Tranceport. Get over it. However, the mix between tracks 8+9 is as bout as good as it gets. Tilt and BT go together real well.

2 out of 5 stars Not really worth buyin.......2004-09-22

Don't just buy cds because of a name. Oakenfold is incredible don't get me wrong, but man this cd just well... its not what you'd expect. yea these are mostly just club tracks from the late 90's. Go ahead and just get a different mix by him. but still becarful what you get. You might not like it.

5 out of 5 stars A+.......2003-07-15

This album is just as good ad DJ Burchett's album released....good work!

2 out of 5 stars Yuck.......2003-03-20

Although I love Oakenfold, this cd is not very good. The music dates itself and it's very simplistic and generally awful..I tried to get into it without success. The worst.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2003-01-18

I'm a fan of a lot of Oakies' stuff - but this mix absolutely did not do his name any justice - keep surfin', this cd is terrible.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars best Carl Cox album ever!.......2006-06-21

This album is in my opinion the best album Carl Cox brought on the market. The records on this album are the records he played the most in the season the cd came out and most of them are just smashin'. Due to the fact that it's a live recording, it's a very uplifting and lively (dâh) cd. Even my friends who don't really like techno like this cd!

5 out of 5 stars Wayyy ahead of his time..........2005-10-07

I had this cd for a year or two now and recently decided to pop it in the player and give it another listen. I was truly blown away! Cox was so far ahead of his time and the flow of the disc is fantastic. This disc will make you wish that you could go back in time and be in the club that night to hear this wicked set as it was born.

2 out of 5 stars Turn the Mic Off and Spin.......2004-02-11

Very annoying screams from the crowd, and intermittent interruptions from the DJ encouraging the crowd to continue yelling over every track and "drop-out", utterly ruins what otherwise would have been a master piece of Techno music. Somebody please tell Carl to turn off the d@mn microphone and spin the records.

4 out of 5 stars Fast and Fun.......2003-08-07

Carl Cox rips it loose in Motown on this 2nd Session of Mixed Live !! The tracks are thumpin', pumpin' hard trance danceables....just what you'd expect from Carl's live work. Carl uses the sound board to create effects and even yells out to the crowd throughout the mix....its fast, furious and fun....the only thing missing is his trademark ending where he cuts the power to the turntable and lets the last song wind down to a stop on the open mike...all in all I think this mix is superior to his 1st Session of Mixed Live....its harder, more thumpin' and more representative of...well...Carl Cox Live !!(at least when he comes to Miami.....Crobar and Ultrafest come to mind). Carl is best when he's live and this is a good snapshop of his work. The tune selection is basic but you won't find the tunes on any of your other mixes !! Its quality fare and worth picking up, especially at used price. Hopefully Carl will mix Session 3 real soon. Mix one live in Miami, Carl !!! We're dying to see you again !!

4 out of 5 stars Into the mix.......2003-06-10

GREAT. That's all that really needs to be said. Carl Cox deftly layers some basic tracks until he has the full sound that many of these tracks lack. He is truly an artist among fools.

Album Description

Ferry Corsten is one of the biggest names in Trance music. He's sold hundreds of thousands of mix CDs around the globe (from his Trance Nation CDs for Ministry of Sound to his World Tour CDs for Purple Eye and not forgetting his two Global Trancemissions CDs for Moonshine.) Ferry's original productions are some of the biggest hits in Trance history. He records under the names System F and Gouryella as well as Ferry Corsten. His latest single "Punk" is without doubt THE anthem of last year. You have to check out the crowd reaction to "Punk" as he drops live at Spundae, Los Angeles' superclub - no other DJ fires up the club like Ferry Corsten.

As an added bonus to the CD, Mixed Live comes with a bonus DVD - this features a 5.1 Surround Sound mix of the set as well as a new, exclusive documentary on Ferry and the recording of the show. Also on the DVD is the full, uncut version of the "Punk" music video and a slide-show of pictures taken inside of Spundae during the show. Mixed Live is the only compilation series to be recorded live at the club in surround sound - just the DJ and the crowd captured in a moment.

5 out of 5 stars Still a favorite!.......2007-02-15

I have had this CD since 2004. This is an album that is and will be timeless for me. It is by far my favorite Ferry Corsten Mix. If you are a fan of Ferry Corsten, or trance in general, you just cannot go wrong in purchasing this cd.

5 out of 5 stars great CD.......2006-12-21

i find that there are a few songs in the middle of this album that are way to electronic for me, but the first few tracks and Punk, Understatment and a few other rock. So overall considering how many tracks are on this album, its a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars REAL Trance.......2005-05-09

Let me start off and say this album is fabolous, and by far Ferry's best album. The songs flow perfectly together, and provide so much uplifting, emotional energy...both melodic and epic trance that will make you melt.Any true appreciater of fine trance music will know right away that this is NOT amateur garbage(like some of the new trance)And to top that,it is live, who could ask for more?Way to go Ferry!I wish all of Ferry's albums could be as slammin'as this one.If your looking for a cd like this one,you wont find it on any of his cd's...this one is quite different from the rest.Any dance/trance music fan should go out and buy this album NOW!

5 out of 5 stars flawless live set!.......2004-12-31

fc picked out some really great tracks for this set! and you can tell that by the crowd singing along to his own track "punk". the bonus dvd really makes me wish i was there that night =(

4 out of 5 stars Great CD!!!.......2004-08-29

I'm a big fan of Global Trancemissions Vol. 1 and 2 so I had to get this one. There are a few tracks toward the middle that I'm not particularly fond of, but the first 4 or 5 tracks are excellent.

Overall it's a great CD that any fan of Ferry Corsten should have. If you like Global Trancemissions, you'll like this one.

5 out of 5 stars great tall paul.......2004-08-30

captures the live experience well..tracks 6-9 (Big Red Whoosh through Into the Dawn) you might as well be peaking on the dance floor- powerful

4 out of 5 stars For the most part a great CD.......2004-08-29

I took a chance and bought this without ever hearing it. It was defenitely worth it!! I don't care much for the last 2 tracks, but the rest of the disc is excellent.

As much as I like this disc, Vol. 2 Miami is much better as far the tracks go. Don't pass up Vol. 1 though.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing...just amazing..........2004-01-03

As a previous poster mentioned, along with other DJ reviews, the purpose behind DJs should be to motivate to people to dance, and the really amazing ones will be those you not only do that, but also beg you to escape, regardless of whether or not you're rolling. Tall Paul does this on this cd....this was my first one by him that I bought, and I still haven't pulled it from my rotation.

My particular fav's are The Virus, God's Love and of course, Funky Heroes.....

He does an amazing job managing those craving techno, but underlacing it with bass undertones (and sometimes overtones for that matter)...this is a GREAT cd to listen to before going to a club....

He's also very damn good live as I saw him about a month ago here at Buzz/Nation in Washington, D.C. and was not disappointed :)

I'm primarily a trance/techno/breaks guy, and this cd is a combo of techno and breaks that you won't be able to put down....laters all!

5 out of 5 stars What better way to enter the party?.......2003-06-19

This was the first Tall Paul CD I ever bought, but was pleasently surprised. The anthems remind me much of my old days of dancing until 5 in the morning and coming home to sleep until 3pm. This CD gives a genuine feel of the club atmosphere and flows flawlessly. Every one of my friends wanted a copy as soon as they heard it. I miss those days of yore, but the US doesn't seem to share my view. I hope the scene rises again soon. If not, there will always be underground parties and CDs like this to bring you back.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful patriotic music.......2003-08-28

This is an excellent CD. The music, both voices and orchestra, is superb. The content of the lyrics is inspiring. It reminds me of so many reasons I'm proud to be American.

5 out of 5 stars All new recordings, with a strong patriotric theme.......2003-07-16

Surprised that no one has reviewed this yet. Amazon.com doesn't give much info on this release, so I thought I'd rectify that. This is the second brand-new release on the "Mormon Tabernacle Choir" label, following their April 2003 release of "Consider the Lilies." Again, several of the arrangements are by Mack Wilberg, with direction by Craig Jessop and accompianment by the Orchestra at Temple Square. The track list is as follows:

1 America the Beautiful
Music: Samuel A. Ward

Text: Katherine Lee Bates
Arrangement: Mack Wilberg (Oxford University Press) 4:30

2 Bound for the Promised Land

17 The Star-Spangled Banner
Music: John Stafford Smith
Text: Francis Scott Key
Arrangement: Robert Russell Bennett 2:21

18 Call of the Champions
Music: John Williams
Text: Olympic Motto 4:47

The sound on this release is, if anything, even cleaner than the previous release, with the Choir and orchestra very evenly balanced. The programming includes a mix of both traditional and brand new songs, a couple of which (Stephen Paulus's "Hymn For America," and Charles Osgood's "The Pledge of Allegiance") were commissioned especially for this recording. Additional note: several of these songs were included on the Choir's 2003 Northeastern States tour, which was a huge success. I highly recommend this recording!

    Album Description

Ann Arbor, Michigan, seems an unlikely site for the establishment of a major avant-garde festival that would shake the new-music community. Tucked away in America's heartland, the city is equally removed from the Eastern metropolises whose artists pride themselves on sensing the pulse of the times, and from the nonconformist West Coast. Yet during the 1960s Ann Arbor played host to one of the most extraordinary adventures in American music history: the annual ONCE Festival and its nexus of related activities.

The primary aim of ONCE's founders--Robert Ashley, Gordon Mumma, George Cacioppo, Roger Reynolds, and Donald Scavarda--was to create a forum for the presentation of cutting-edge music. To this end they were phenomenally successful. Performers and composers--whether little-known or renowned--embraced the endeavor, demanding almost nothing in return. Perhaps most important, however, ONCE acted as a creative stimulus for its organizers. Scavarda describes the adventure as an explosion of pent-up energy: "Suddenly we could write anything we wanted and have it heard." And they did. The ONCE composers--and many guest artists--wrote a host of new works, some experimental, others more traditional.

What united the ONCE composers was their exploration of sound, whether through the medium of extended techniques on traditional instruments, electronic (or electronically modified) timbres, or the intersection of musical sounds with those of the environment.

A major slice of ONCE's rich musical legacy--35 works constituting six hours of music--is presented here, almost all for the first time. These pieces are as diverse in style as they are compelling in expression. This landmark set, the most comprehensive document ever released of this legendary event, is an opportunity for anyone interested in contemporary music to hear history in the making. Included in the set is a 140-page booklet with a lengthy scholarly essay by musicologist and biographer Leta Miller and numerous rare photos of ONCE personages and performances.

    5 out of 5 stars ak1200 at it agian.......2005-06-16

i dont know why every 1 is down sizing this cd its a number 1 in my cd book i can never get sick of this cd ever and mc navigator is nice i think he has plenty of skill if u like drum n bass with mc's u will like this cd its a 10 and its live it cant get any beter

1 out of 5 stars not even worth the plastic it was imprinted on.......2004-02-22

i can't believe that i bought this cd. jesus christ this mix sux more than a crack ho's mother on the 1st of the month when rent is due. thanx ak... for making me wanna puke. forget navigator's appalling US debut in recorded format... even the track selection highlights the postboredom that the jungle scene fell into after 2000. i recommend dieselboy's 6th session and dj db's higher education for a much more profound understanding of how the junglist held it down after 2000 byatch.

3 out of 5 stars Can we drown out the MC.......2004-02-13

First off, after hearing MC Navs, MC Skills, i would never book this guy for a venue. The only reason I gave this cd a 3 is because of the supposed MCing. If not for that i would rate it about a 4.5 Once again AK 1200 comes through with some awsome track selection. Everytime i see this guy at the Planet of the drums tour he gets better and better. I feel bad AK 1200 basically gets drowned out by the horrid attemp to MC. But if your a true AK 1200 fan like i am you'll by this and just forget that MC navigator even on it.

4 out of 5 stars Can't understand all the dissappointment?.......2002-08-04

I can't see why everyone is so down on this Cd. Trust me passer-byers this disc is not that bad. The only reason I give it 4.5 stars is because I have listened to Fully Automatic and got blown away by it. The only difference (if you liked Fully Automatic) is that they used an MC to try to get back to the level they have achieved. Listeners probably don't take to it because the MC bastes attitude all over the disc, however it still remains an up-beat dancable attitude and doesn't quite reach the ranks of rap. The only thing keeping it from a five star rating is that this Cd in my opinion starts off much stronger than any of the other AK1200 discs I have listened to but begins to falter about half way through. However keep in mind it doesn't trip too bad they retain thier sound throughout the disc. They simply take a step down from the incredible high that is immediatelly brought into the Cd.
    Thanks

1 out of 5 stars This album is weak.......2002-04-24

This album is weak. It is hardly worh listening to; the disruptive rantings from Navigator make me cringe. There is no rhythm or continuity within his MCing efforts. He must have been exhausted from the tour, and probably stayed up too late the night before or something. There are no, I repeat no MCing skills made manifest in his holloring nonsense. Navigator is never on time, and always spoils the tracks by forcing his voice over the track with no respect to the intended rhythm of the music. Besides the bad MCing, the reproduction audio quaility is poor, I suspect because they had to give Navigator plenty of barking volume on his mic. It can be done right and sound well, sure, but it wasn't done so here. Other than that the mix by Ak is pretty good. Don't buy this album if you have any sense in what an MC-aided drum and bass set should sound like......
