Guns N' Roses' career could be neatly summed up in a lyric from their song "Pretty Tied Up": "I just found a million dollars that someone else forgot." Indeed, GNR satisfied a grassroots public hunger for bigger-than-life hard rock at a time when legions of alternative bands were enjoying their first burst of overweening critical attention and commercial cachet. The last and most spectacularly successful band to prosper from Hollywood's burgeoning 1980s Sunset Strip glam-metal scene wrapped a couple decade's worth of sometimes tired clichés around a tight, assaultive musical attack that enticed millions yearning for poor role models. And if their edgy songs often blurred fantasy and reality, the best of them had a street-level honesty that couldn't be denied. A de facto greatest-hits collection culled from performances recorded around the world, Live Era best documents the early, ferocious performing prime of GNR's original quintet on its first disc, leaning heavily on their landmark Appetite for Destruction album to great effect. But the second volume often chronicles the band's steady decline into bloated self-parody and neo-Vegas "professionalism." This band needs a horn section like Slash needs another drink! --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
A Great Live Album for a misunderstood band....(4.5 Stars).......2006-08-03
It's funny to think all the five GnR heavy hitters (Sweet Child of Mine, Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, November Rain, and Don't You Cry Tonight) are all slowly making their way into classic rock rotations and there is probably a decent amount of younger people out there that haven't hear much of them. This double CD showcases some of their other great songs like KHD, Patience, My Michelle, and Nightrain.
I had some great live bootlegs from a Japanese concert that have been floating around the internet for years. The sound quality and is bit better then those but nothing to really write home about.
Bottom Line: For the casual fan the only GnR album you really need.
A LIVE CLASSIC!!.......2006-06-12
As a live album it serves well the legacy of their performances that were always memorable if not classic.
All in all, an incredible album and a must for any rock fans collection
Great GNR Live Set.......2006-06-10
Anyone who lived with Guns N' Roses at their peak (unfortunately, I was two and a half when they split) knwos that they were one of, if not the, best live acts around. They always put on an amazing, energetic show and all their fans left happy.
This two disc set, "Live Era: '87 - '93" captures Guns N' Roses live throughout their seven year run. You get heart pouding, blood pumping live versions of their biggest hits, including "Welcome To The Jungle", "Sweet Child O' Mine", "November Rain" and "Paradise City". You also get to hear some of their lesser known material such as "Yesterdays", "Rocket Queen", "Used To Love Her", "Estranged" and "Patience".
For the most part, all of the performances are solid and energetic. If you are a big Guns N' Roses fan, then I think you'd be very happy with this album.
Not Perfect, But Best Yet.......2006-05-11
As the title of this CD [Live Era 87-93], it was only 7 years in the history that GN'R showed us their performance. Those days was one of the most exciting years ; thrilling, powerful, and exciting rock band ruled the world, not only US but also Europe, Asia, South America.. all over the world. I don't remember when it was the last time that we has a band like them; maybe only few exception is just U2 & Metallica. But one thing is sure - since the 90's there wasn't much time that we had such a real fun as we watched GN'R. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Oasis, Blur, Radiohead, RATM... OK, they are all pretty good bands. But I always looked for GN'R's CD when I'm tired of their music. Why? Because I felt I need something more rocking and it was GN'R. And this CD has what I need; it was Rock And Roll.
First off, this CD has pretty decent sellection even though I wish there were a couple of songs I like personally. I can't complain too much. But one song, 'Coma' only in Japanese edition is a real hidden gem. Don't miss it.
Sencondly, one weak point is too varied. Maybe this is a inevitable choice between a live CD which is selected from 1 or 2 good concert, or compilation of various performances. AXL chose the second one just like the title from their early days in 1987 to the last good days with original members SLASH & DUFF in 1993. And it made this CD set weak in the matter of concentration. Honestly, I prefer the first choice as a Fan, their legendary lives like Ritz in 1988, Monsters Of Rock 1988, or Rio in 1991. So I wish AXL release one more complete concert as DVD or CD sets. (I know there's not much chance for that, except bootlegs.) And I think it'd be better if there's some simple comments for each tracks like "Date/Place/Members".
In conclusion, this CD set is not perfectly satisfactory to me due to the standard of making, but I had no doubt about the quality itself.

Amazon.com essential recording
With more than two hours of music, this is a hard-core Orb experience. However, fans and newcomers alike should not be intimidated, because Live 93 offers coherent, wonderfully recorded versions of some of the band's greatest moments. Indeed, many of the tracks included here are even better than their album versions ("Towers of Dub," for example, is absolutely devastating). While no one has ever accused the Orb of condensing their music, the tracks here feel even less constrained by the notion of time. Free to wander up, over, and around the music, the Orb let no thought go unexplored. Bass lines rumble like tectonic plates, melodies echo and float gravity-free, and all the while samples drift in and out of view, as if "Dr." Alex Patterson were scanning the universe with some jerrybuilt, deep-space radio. Tune in, turn on... --S. DudaAmazon.com
You'd think two discs/141 minutes of unadorned machine rhythms and strikingly original samples (Morricone, Rickie Lee Jones, TV documentaries, some chap named Victor Lewis-Smith singing, "Ripped to the Tits on Drink and Drugs") would be overkill, and you'd be right. But, taken in 30-minute doses, the Orb is both fascinating and functional in these excerpts from concert events in Tokyo, Copenhagen, and Glastonbury. --Jeff BatemanCustomer Reviews:
There aren't that many 'Live' Electronica albums that demand purchasing...(this is one of them!!!).......2005-10-26
Which makes 'The Orb's' decision to release a 'Live' album all the more puzzling, and even more remarkable, considering that their music leans heavily towards downtempo/ambient grooves, it's hardly the sort of format to replicate the energy or dynamics of a conventional 'Live' album. But the first thing that'll surprise listeners, is the fact that the sound quality on this double Cd Live album is that it's only a couple of shades lower than that of the duo's actual studio recordings, with much of the crowd noise keep to a minimum. And as well as retaining the sprawling and soothing rhythms that the duo, became known for with their music, a lot of the crowd favourites are included here, although it should be noted that tracks have been shortened or slightly modified on some of the more 'Epic' tracks. (having 20 minute tracks in a 'Live' performance, wouldn't leave much room for a variety of tracks), yet surprisingly everything is consistent, and the playful sampling and sound effects, that feature almost everything from BBC nature recordings to American NASA space broadcasts and reflective synthwork, and a multitude of special effects, coupled with those ambient flourishes, all remain intact. And listeners that are paying attention, will notice the various "Pink Floyd" references dotted over the course of the album (Check out the CD Cover art, which is a cheeky reference to "Pink Floyd's - Animals" album).
This has definitely got to be one of the albums that I've been enjoying most over the last couple of weeks, it's not something that I've been sitting intently and concentrating on all the time. Instead it's been more like music to have on whilst I've been working, as it has that delicate and soothing flow, that works remarkably well, to have it on, in the background, and it's surprising just how well this music has aged, considering that the 'Ambient House' genre is now behind us (commercially at least). It's not an album that I'd recommend to listeners new (or fairly New) to 'The Orb', as you really should have: "Adventures beyond the Ultraworld", "U.F.Orb", or even the 'Best of' first. As this release feels as little bit geared towards the existing fan base, rather than attracting a new fan-base. But providing that you are acquainted with their previous work, I'd say that providing you can still find this, it's the next logical step, and it also joins the (very) small collection of essential 'Live' electronica albums.
Strictly For The Fans.......2004-08-09
If you're a fan and you don't have this one, you need to stop sleeping. Even though it's not their best release, this one remains a personal favorite. Most people tend to think that electronic music doesn't translate well into a live, improvised atmosphere. This album blows that notion out of the water. If you're a dready tour kid that likes Phish or the Dead, you may even appreciate this one (if you're open-minded enough). I prefer the renditions of "OOBE" and "Little Fluffy Clouds" on this over the studio versions and the contribution of a REAL bass player and a REAL drummer definitely allows this to compete with any other so-called 'live psychedelic' rock music.
This stuff is way more danceable than those other jam bands out right now. It's widely believed that dancing can put you into a psychedelic trance and if this is the case then 1960s nostalgia doesn't compare to modern acid rock like this.

Psalms of David Complete
Choir of St Paul's Cathedral , and Scott Manufacturer: Hyperion UK ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD Similar Items:
ASIN: B00006GO6J Release Date: 2002-10-08 |
Amazon.com
This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context. The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11
We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.
Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.
A- for effort.......2006-02-23
The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.
What can you say?.......2003-01-03
How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.
One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.
So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.
Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.

Great setlist, Antelope jams.......2007-04-12
The sound is good. Doesn't feel as live as some of the others in the series, with very little crowd even between songs. Nice stereo mix, with clear keyboards and drums. Mike's bass could stand to be a little higher up in the mix, but it's not something you're going to notice on most sound systems, I suspect. All around, a great release of an absolutely great show. The definitive shows from the live Phish series are 4, 6, 7, 11, 12, and 18. Add to that New Year's Eve 1995 and you have a great representation of the best of the band's live work.
totally solid show, worth the buy.......2006-04-26
What a great show.......2005-09-26
this show has a lovely setlist. Basically all of the first set is comprized (i dont know if thats a word) are good songs ranging from classics (chalkdust, Split open and melt) to raritities (esther), except sparkle, and cavern (personally i have heard these songs enough, especially sparkle). To tell you the truth i dont really listen to the first set very often. Its a very good first set and a pretty good introduction to phish, but the second set...
This second set is magic. Starts of with a wonderful opener, 2001 which goes into run like an antelope. Antelope is one of my all time favorite phish songs, and this one of my favorite antelopes. the first bit of the jam in this song is not the most pleasing antelope to your ears (kind of sloppy at points, but i mean come on your gonna get some sloppiness from phish in 93), but it is a really interesting and unique jam to me, and i have grown to love it. but why is this antelope so great? i'll tell you why. a little before the 9 minutes mark its starts to build up, and oh my god, it just goes into some of the sickest stuff i have heard. everyone is playing on fire and perfectly with eachother. trey is playing a catchy riff while page adds on to it perfectly, fishman is REALLY getting into it, and mike... does mike every have a bad day? i mean this song is absolutely RAGING. page takes over the reins at one point and does a fanatastic job. this is some energetic piano playing, even though he screws up a bit at one point, he picks it back up with the organ. this jam gives me the bumps almost everytime i listen to it. it finally slows down a little... just to go into sparks (by the who)! what an awesome song. sparks segues into walk away (dont care too much for this song), that goes into a wacky jam that starts to pickup intensity toward the end of the which goes back into antelope (which is still raging). the mellow reggae tune have mercy comes up next. i really like this song and it is the perfect breather. have mercy winds down to a nice ambient point which goes into the ending of antelope perfectly. another thing to point out about this whole shibang is that all of the segues are pretty fluent. the rest of the set is pretty good too with a bunch of great songs, most notably the squirming coil, and YEM.
sorry that i didnt get into the specifics of the other parts of this show besides the first half of the second set, but that would of taken a really long time.
all that with a mike's groove filler(even if it is only so-so) and youve got yourself, one of the better live phish volumes.
I expected more from this killer setlist....(3.5 stars).......2003-07-30
Bottom Line: A great setlist and an important concert for die hard fans to have. Not the best place to start for beginners. Being the Phish fanatic that I am, I thin this is better than most CD's that I own but I gave it 3.5 because it is my least favorite of the Live Series.

Fine latter-day Collins.......2003-09-07
Albert Collins' highly original, percussive guitar playing is still sharp, and his vocals are strong and soulful. He is backed by an excellent band which includes two sax players and a trumpet, and they offer solid backing and the occational soul-revue riff without overwhelming the 60-year old guitarist.
Collins and his band swing on the superb "If You Love Me Like You Say" and the funky "Iceman", and they groove on the eight-minute blues workout "Put The Shoe On The Other Foot".
Other highlights include the rocking "Travelin' South" and the sweaty soul of "Talkin' Woman". And listen to Albert Collins' solo on "Iceman", and his take on T-Bone Walker's classic "T-Bone Shuffle"...Collins played without a pick, and often used a capo high up on the neck of his slightly metallic sounding Telecaster, plucking tinkling, piercingly clear notes from the strings (this was the technique which gave his playing its "icy" tone).
This is a strong collection of some of Collins' best and most accessible latter-day material. It is a great place to start if you're new to the music of Albert Collins, and a must-have if you're a fan.
Definitely recommended.
