5 out of 5 stars A Great Start..............2007-06-24

This was Ana Caram's initial effort for Chesky Records back in 1989. And a wonderful effort it is! Mixing English with Portugese, and singing the music of several composers, ranging from herself to Antonio Carlos Jobim to Carole King, she gives us a thoroughly charming album. Ana's voice has something of a "little girl" quality, but this is no child; she was already past 30.

Chesky Records needs no introduction: prefect technique, sound and engineering. They, along with Reference Recordings, establish the "gold standard" of the recording art. This is one of several Latin Jazz albums they've done, but their catalog ranges from Bach to Blues, and all points in between--and all done to the same high standard.

This superbly enjoyable album whetted out desire for more of the same; we know now that it was only the first of several great listening experiences. Word of warning; Chesky Records are great, but not easy to find. Grab this when you have the chance.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!.......2003-09-28

Ana is fantastic! If you wanna listen to inspiring music . . .get this CD!

3 out of 5 stars somewhat disappointing performance.......2002-05-11

While Ana has a wonderful voice and the production/recording quality are first rate, the program selection was disappointing. Many of the Brazilian tunes are translated to English and loose much of their original poetry. This was Anna's first recording and it shows. Pick up Amazonia or other later releases if you enjoy good Brazilian music, you won't be disappointed with her later work.

5 out of 5 stars A Happy Discovery.......2002-01-02

I've only begun to explore the realm of Brazilian music, but once I moved beyond Astrud and Bebel Gilberto, Ana Caram was a wonderful discovery. This young protege' of Antonio Carlos Jobim has a smooth, breezy, bird-like voice, singing in either Portuguese or pleasantly accented English. She is accompanied on this CD by a talented combo including Jobim, and Paquito D'Rivera. This is a soft and romantic collection of numbers that will transport you to a warm tropical night in a quiet cafe'. I highly recommend it as an introduction to this delightful singer.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Discovery.......2001-12-27

I've only just begun to explore the realm of Brazilian music, but after moving beyond Astrud and Bebel Gilberto, Ana Caram has been a happy discovery. This young protege' of Antonio Carlos Jobim has a clear, smooth, bird-like voice, and on this CD is joined by a great combo of talent including Jobim and Paquito D'Rivera. She sings some songs in Portuguese and others in a pleasantly accented english. This collection of numbers is light, soft, romantic and uplifting. It will transport you to a warm tropical night in a quiet cafe'. I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Latin House.......2004-03-11

Summer 2003, I picked this up the same time I picked up Cafe Samba. Both came after Brazilectro 5. Little did I know that these two cd's (Cafe Samba and Rio After Dark) would be fantastic companion pieces. While Cafe Samba has a bit of a slower vibe, Rio After Dark kicks in with some pretty good Latin House and a splash of bossa. But don't be fooled by the title here - this isn't all Brazilian music...

The CD really gets heated up from Luz Marian's cut on forward. It has a sort of deep house feel to it. Some of the famous artists that contributed are Bebel Gilberto, Suba, Banda Favela, Edson X and Macumbalada. What's pretty cool is that the mixes here are really in full, so if you want to make your own mix of tunes then this is a great platform! And there really are some good and interesting cuts on here that'll get you pumped up for a night out on the town. Here's the track listing:

Zuell - Primer Contacto
DJ Pippi - Feel It
Luz Marian - En La Luna
Bebel Gilberto - Tanto Tempo (Kruder Remix)
Macumbalada - Samba Do Morro
Ana Mazzotti - Eu Sou Mais Eu
Andre Andreo - The Meaning of Freedom
Bah Samba - Reach Inside
Suba - Tantos Desejos (Nicola Conte Mix)
Deeper & Pacific - Sonho Da Garoa
Martin East - Caylin (Supergrandbaile mix)
Luz Marian - Una Vibracion
Banda Favela - Samba De Ile (WaiWan mix)
Edson X - Tijuca

I definitely recommend this. If you're a fan of some of the Naked Music compilations or Miguel Migs "Nude Tempo", this might be up your alley (this CD is on Water Music btw). However it isn't totally without fault - I didn't really "Feel it" for DJ Pippi's song, and the remix to Suba's "Tantos Desejos" is not my favorite Conte mix. Also, I LOVE Ana Mazzotti's music and this cut in particular but that cool lounge 70's sound in "Eu Sou Mais Eu" just doesn't seem to fit in with the vibe of the cd. But... the Suba and Mazzotti cuts are still fantastic (especially Ana Mazzotti's), and this cd is still quality and worth checkin' out. If you like this, you may like the Nova Latino series and Monte La Rue's "Latin Deluxe: Dia Em Noite".

4 out of 5 stars Nice.......2003-12-03

This album is a perfect mix of trip hop and dance music, with all the elements of the relaxed Brazilian lifestyle. If you don't have beautiful female vocals then you have the tropical sounds of the amazon, and much more. It will mellow you out and make you feel good.
Give it a listen.
