5 out of 5 stars Classic CD .......2007-03-19

First let me say that this is NOT a live cd like the review said. This is one of my all time favorite albums and the best from YMO. They of course were influenced by the Fathers of techno, Kraftwerk, yet have an original sound with a hint of Asian (Japanese)flavor. So many bands were touched by them and still copy their work through dubbing today. So great to hear it today even though it is 25 years plus old. Buy it. Listen and love something unique.

5 out of 5 stars early sampling genius.......2005-07-20

This beautifully composed suite of songs is YMO's best; a solid set of compositions, mostly in a pop song format, using the early sampler technology of the Emulator. These songs transcend the sounds and rhythms of their day (1981). It's a groundbreaking electronic album that has, in my opinion yet to be matched in production quality and feel, even with today's huge variety of techno music. The translated lyrics are odd and beautiful poetry to start with, but also have the magical charm of Engrish. The musical sounds and lyrics combine to create a totally unique sonic world. The two instrumentals at the end use industrial sounds to great effect. A great pedagogical tool for composers and a real rare gem for lover's of the difficult to describe.

5 out of 5 stars a real classic.......2006-08-06

Now this is something. YMO remain a personal favourite even though they have released some stuff of really varying quality I must say. However this is their best disc in my opinion and ranks up there along with early Kraftwerk as a pioneering work of modern electronic music. It is also the least eastern (even if in some instances mabe thier most!) of their records and therefore the most understandable. YMO were apparently huge in Japan which one can understand. All their records have something that you can recommend them by. The only problem is that these japanese imports used to be hyper-expensive at the time. But they were definitely worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Early Electronica!!!.......2002-12-07

I'm a huge fan of YMO I first heard of them back in 1983 and was lucky enough to get a hold of 1981 BGM one of my favorires next to "Technodelic" There sound was different then a lot of Electronic bands at the time but was just as good if not better than other well known releases like Depeche Mode-"Speak&Spell"
Human Leagues-"Dare" and Kraftwerks-"ComputerWorld".

5 out of 5 stars What a amaging sound!!.......2002-06-12

I'm an YMO freak. Please excuse me to praise them. I grew up with this music and this album was the bomb. I've been haunting by this album for decades. Specially track#4's Soul Music. Listen to the back gound voices. you can imagine Indonesian's traditional music called "Kechak"that has very complicated mutilayered rhythm. And Drum sound are incredible! Good job, Takahashi! It's like trash can sound but it's fat and mellow and smooth. And last song "Epilogue". You've got to listen this song! You can cry listenning this song. Synthesither called "Prophet-5"'s simple pads sounds are just amaging. On top of that, Ryuichi's melody line is the Bomb. You can never imitate. Don't even try to do that.Amaging just amaging....

5 out of 5 stars Still Works 18 years later.......1999-04-03

I can't believe this was released in 1981. It is a technopop masterpiece. 99% of the synth junk from that time sounds *hopelessly* dated today. That's right, even J.M.JARRE! Not this gem. Very unique, even cinematic.

3 out of 5 stars Electronic music sub-classic........1998-11-05

This album is to be considered a classic in electrononic music, although it is more amateur-like/expirimental then "the greats" suchs as KRAFTWERK and JARRE. Maby in retropective it is not a masterpiece, but YMO put Japan on the map with their own sound in electronic music. YMO (just as the greats) had also influenced modern dance music. If you want to go a little deeper into electronic music then this could be your second step.

5 out of 5 stars Gradated Grey (Addendum).......2003-06-13

--YMO did take their cues from Kraftwerk on this (and earlier items). But certainly, this album achieves its own greatness by virtue of their japanese musical roots. As the review below suggests, Ryuichi Sakamoto is in finest form at this time (1981), but on the matter of that golden track "Gradated Grey", its actually Haruomi Hosono, the bassist and actual founder of the YMO project who offered up this classic (as well as another lesser known 'ambient / electronic' watermark : "Cochin Moon", the earliest hint of "technodelics" to come, circa 1978). Since then, Hosono hasn't concerned himself with movie soundtracks and NYC house/jazz (as Sakamoto has), but rather forged ahead through the 90's leaving behind him yet more proof that he, more than Sakamoto or Takahashi, had conceived and birthed the Yellow Magic aesthetic. Most notably, projects with Uwe Schmidt (aka Atom Heart), Tetsu Inoue and even Bill Laswell are worth a listen--if you can find them ; sometimes, greatness is so far ahead of its time its left to the ages. In Japan, however, Hosono's legacy is secure--check him out.

5 out of 5 stars all of them.......2000-12-01

Well, nothing more to say than wonderful! A great electronic travel through almost natural? sounds :-)

    4 out of 5 stars techno eastablishment.......2000-08-13

By the time ymo had made this album they already had years of electronic experimentation under their belt. Having already maped out the future of electronic dance music with their 'bgm' album (B ack G round M usic...i think not)they now continued their prophecy. kicking off with the bizarrist of vocals they snap into a beautiful electro track with synth work that only one band can lay. As ever the tracks are credited individualy allowing you to follow the progression of that man Sakamoto, who crafts some perfect, understated electro moods; 'prologue-epilogue'. but for me the star track, the five star track is Takahashi's 'graduated grey'; absolutely brilliant it grooves along with low flying electronics that gradually elevate you higher and higher. I'll give you the cliche now; A must have for all electronic fans and definetly for any ymo fans.
