4 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2004-06-07

This album was my introduction to the whole Chill music phenomenon. Since then, I have listened to quite a few Chill albums, ranging from jazz to world beat to the sounds found here, downtempo electronica. I have become quite enthusiastic about Chill...not a style of music so much as a mood that can be exemplified in a number of genres of music. The mood is relaxing, but with a gentle beat. Unlike New Age or ambient smooth relaxing music, most Chill is something you could dance to late at night when you're mellowed out, or early in the evening when you're just kind of warming up; or, you can just sit back in your recliner and drift off to music pleasureland.

Some albums pull off the Chill mood better than others. This is one of my favorites. I especially like tracks #5 through #9...this set of 5 songs is 5-star material and exquisite sequencing--sheer perfection in beautiful electronic sounds and a gentle beat that rocks you like a sensual lullaby.

While #5-#9 are the pinnacle of the album for me, tracks #4-#10 all fit together superbly. I don't like Moby's "In This World"--it just doesn't seem to fit on this album, so that's why I say the good sequence starts at #4. The first song seems to be a bit different too. While most of the album is more like evening music, Delerium's "Love" seems like sunny music to me. It's still smooth and beautiful, but the acoustic guitars and female vocals sound more like summer sun music to me, rather than the other songs' "evening" sounds.

I have three versions of "Tears From The Moon" by Conjure One. While this is my least favorite in itself, the mix on this album fits the album to a tee. After this song, the beautiful, smooth, rich electronics give way to a song with lowkey rapping, so the mood is lost. The lyrics in "North Pole" are offensive and thus do not contribute to the beauty found on the rest of the album. Fischerspooner's and New Order's songs sound like something straight out of 1982 (Depeche Mode or Yazoo of that era, for example); I like that kind of music and these songs have a gentle slow beat, but still, the 1982 sound doesn't mix well with the 2003 sounds. These are the reasons I say songs #4 to #10 are the prime sequence of this album and the other songs, well, just don't fit so well.

I picked up this album because of the artists I knew, Moby and New Order. Ironically, I dislike the song by Moby and think the New Order song doesn't fit. But I have been introduced to a new mode of music, Chill, which I am now quite crazy about, and among Chill albums I've heard, the middle of this album, particularly tracks 5 through 9, is quintessential Chill. So beautiful...

4 out of 5 stars Not quite the ultimate chill out but still good.......2003-04-13

I guess after hearing the fifth volume in the Buddha Bar series, my expectations of chill out compilations have been raised. I have been spoiled by the diversity of the well-knowned chill out series. So when I bought Nettwerk's "Chillout 2003: The Ultimate Chillout", I thought it could have been better and less predictable. As much as I love Moby and his song "In This World" and Sasha's "Wavy Gravy", I thought those two songs could have easily been left off this cd. On the other hand hearing a new song from "Delerium ("Love") and a remix of my favorite Conjure One song "Tears From the Moon" made it well worth buying the cd, which I found a used copy in the used bins at my favorite record store. The Delerium song "Love" was nothing I have ever heard before from my favorite ambient act. Faithless' Zoe Johnston lends her stunning vocals to the beautiful song. I also loved Kirsty Hawkshaw's "Fine Day [Frakker Mix]". I remember hearing samples of that song on an old Orbital song. Of course what is a Nettwerk compilation without a Sarah McLachlan track? To be honest, I actually enjoyed the William Orbit mix of "Black". I am nowhere tired of that song as I am with Delerium's "Silence". I wasn't too wild about the Telepopmusik or Fischerspooner tracks. Both groups I find vastly overrated. I loved Ihb's "Olivia Newton Christ" and FC Kahuna's "North Pole Transmission". Hooligan's "Hear Me Now" and New Order's "Your Silent Face". With all its imperfections, "Chillout 2003" is quite good but it isn't the ultimate chill out as the title say. I leave that title to my favorite chill out compilation "Buddha Bar V".

5 out of 5 stars Best Chillout CD of 2003.......2003-04-02

As the title states - this is the Ultimate Chillout CD. I love the way it starts out with Delerium - they are one of the best Chillout groups ever. Can't wait for a new CD by them. Chillout 2003 also does a nice job of mixing it up. The Conjure One track is perfect and even the older stuff like New Order fit in well.

5 out of 5 stars Love hate relationship with compilations.......2006-05-21

To me, there are three types of compilations. 1)Best of 2)Greatest Hits and 3)Compilation. All three (with the possible exception of Greatest Hits) can be difficult to review since they are bound to omit favorites of the reviewer. I try not to be biased by this when reviewing. So, what makes this release 5 starts instead of 4? Simple....song selection. There are releases from every major release of No-Man along with some previously unreleased songs and versions of existing songs. Are some of my favorites missing? Defintitely. I really miss Love Among the White Trash. However, I already own that song on Lost Songs. When I buy a compilation like this, I want there to be songs that I might have but don't normally listen to. Best example, when I play the Carolina Skeletons EP, I usually play just that song. Now I am reminded that Something Falls is also on that disc and it is a wonderful track. Back When You Were Beautiful is also missing but instead we get a drum mix of The Break Up For Real from Together We're Stranger. I actually think this is the perfect starter disk for someone who has nothing by No-Man and it is a great addition to your collection even for those who have almost everything. By the way, the No-Man website [...] has samples of just about every song released by the group. Also not a bad way to check things out.
In closing, I will say this....there definitely needs to be a volume 2 of some of the other rare songs. Maybe we can take off 0.5 stars for that

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect!.......2006-04-22

I would've rated "All the Blue Changes" 5 stars, given they put more upbeat songs on it. Instead, it appears to me like a demo compilation (which is not bad...but not what I expected). Most of the songs are slow. What happened to "Only Baby" and "Taking it like a man"? These are 2 songs I really expected to find on this CD. Also, I expected something different with "Simple". There is an alternate version (mix) of "Simple" out there, only released on a free CD (given with a magazine) back in '95, I believe. If Steven Wilson & Tim Bowness wanted to make more $$$, they could've released it commercially on this compilation. What a disappointment! Those who don't own these 2 particular No-Man titles ("Loveblows & Lovecries - A Confession" and "Lovesighs - An Entertainment") will agree there are some songs from there, which should've been included. I do like "Dry Cleaning Ray" very much...but "Only Baby" and "Taking it like a man" are "The" songs for me. Sorry, but it's how i feel. I only tell it like it is...and if those 2 songs were included, the package would've been complete.

This is what's missing:
- Housewives Hooked On Heroine
- Taste My Dream
- Teardrop Fall
- You Grow More Beautiful
- All that You are
- Heartcheat Pop
- Only Baby
- Painting Paradise
- Taking it like a man
- Simple (whatever remix there is available of this particular song)

If these songs were on the CD, a lot more people would be getting into No-Man's music...for these songs are upbeat and fun. "All the blue changes" is not a bad compilation, but slightly boring for me...considering the wait since discovering the first news about the release. What makes me laugh is the amount of people whom have no idea how "available" this item is on all amazon stores world-wide. We got ours directly from here...and i also ordered one directly through the Burningshed site. Both arrived in a timely manner.

The recording sound quality on this compilation is excellent. There are a lot of songs I've never heard before...which remind me more of demos. I wouldn't recommend this item as a "first" for any new No-Man fan. My recommendation is "Flowermouth" remastered digi-pack. At least that one has some beautiful songs on it, + 2 bonus songs "Angeldust" and "Born Simple" not found on the original recording. And, if you shop around on Amazon, you'll find lots of earlier CDs of No-Man, such as "Wild Opera", "Dry CLeaning Ray", "Speak", "Returning Jesus", as well as "Flowermouth" and "Flowermix" and "Heaven Taste". Once you've got all these, it's easy to understand why "All the blue changes" just doesn't cut it as a genius compilation.

4 out of 5 stars Great. Not as bad as they are saying........2004-12-13

i know i know. this is labeled Trance. but a lot of it isnt. but its still a great comp. many stand out songs. one of the best being Heaven sent (#16) many beautiful songs. one of of kind remixes. very energetic. love it.

5 out of 5 stars Not "trance," but still, great music.......2004-04-22

You are correct. You can't call this music "trance." Yet that doesn't make it a bad CD at all. Most of the tracks are incredible. The remixes are one of a kind and very energetic. I highly recommend this CD.

1 out of 5 stars does not work with out ferry corsten!.......2004-02-15

simply aviod this one
the sound quality is terrible, and the songs are too commercial
all the others in the series rock ,this one woobles!

1 out of 5 stars NO MORE QUALITY IN THIS TRANCE NATION SERIES.......2004-01-07

It looks like Ministry of Sound compilations including this Trance Naions series have been invaded and corrputed by the cheese mongers.

Awful track selection which most of the tracks arent even trance, a terrible and sad era for MOS and MOS compilations.

1 out of 5 stars Track #29 Whoop there it is???? This is not Trance!!!.......2004-01-06

I should have read the reviews before buying this CD set. I figured 2 discs, some fam names, 40 tracks, how bad could this be. Well...its bad. This is more like Trance Nation 2001. Almost all old tracks. Im in NY and even our Radio stations played out these tracks in 2002. This more like pop, fast fwded. One track has a girls vocals about her childhood in chipmunk voice (not kidding). I only liked 2 tracks from scooter and tiesto. I have trance cds from 1997 that put this CD to shame. My 3rd & last dissapointment with MOS so called trance collection. ticked... off in NY for spening [$+].

5 out of 5 stars An Overview of the Pop Ambient Series..........2007-05-30

The label "Kompakt" label has been long since well known for it's output of Electronica/Techno, decided in the latter-half of 2000 to release a compilation that showcase not only the broad range of artists on the label (with a few artists licensed to appear on some volumes) , but a chance to compile some of the more subdued, delicate, restrained & intimate nature of the featured artists work. In this case "Ambient techno" with a decidedly accessible and unassuming slant (hence the "Pop Ambient" tag). Following the success of the release of the first "Ambient 2001" edition, every successive year has seen a new release (the most recent volume being "Pop Ambient 2007).

For any preconception of harsh, thumping, or even groove based music when the term "Ambient Techno" is used to describe the general overall genre of these volumes, you have to bear in mind. What each Pop Ambient series deals almost exclusively in, is that tracks don't concern themselves hard edged beats, or driving percussion, and reverberating basslines. And instead focus more, on directionless modal harmonies, and emphasizing densely layered, highly nuanced, and meticulously arranged ambient soundscapes. Which can on one track veers more towards soft gentle swirling synth tones and glistening piano-like melodies, and another track can feature a pastoral guitar strum, with looped piano chords and a sublime mix of bouncy rhythm, and light soundscapes. And other tracks can be dreamy glitch-lite tracks, with the sort of atmospheric drone-like twinkly/crackly shadings, full of radiant, gorgeously low-lit sound. And then have the following track deal an unhurried minimal percussion, working well alongside ethereal, woozy synths
      .

Pop Ambient compilations seem to take in a multitude of influences..ranging from: Dub/ Ambient / Techno / Electronica / Glitch/ Electro-house & Soundscape music are all touched upon, explored and interpreted, crossed-referenced in a way that the sound & textures are absolutely compelling, yet the simplicity of the arrangements give this it `Pop' feel. It's not an series of compilations that is there to immediately impress, as it's far too considered and delicate in its approach to have an immediate effect. The spare twinkles of guitar and humming drones, and minimal undulating bass certainly wont have your friends begging you to sell your copy, but taken on it's own terms, and listened to without outside interruption, it's a series of albums that eventually win you over with a vast array of soft thrums, subtle rhythmic structures, meditative pieces, or melodic simple softly fading distant tunes, poignant moods and fractured sounds that skilfully blend deep, granular sound design, with the 4-bar rhythmic intensity, mixed with spare late-night introspective sound of diverting vamps, working alongside tracks which feature nearly imperceptible sparse polyrhythms, in a way that relax in a totally disconcerting manner.

The revolving door approach to each of the releases, ensures that although there is a certain musical aesthetic that each edition of these compilation works and adheres to. The rotation of different artists does give the series new material to work with (although some artist works, do feature throughout the series). I have all the volumes in the series so far (2001 - 2007), and I do find that they're all relatively similar in a lot of aspects, and thus relatively interchangeable. And everyone will probably have their favourite volumes (although a lot of people consider volumes 2002 / 2003 to be the finest volumes), you could probably pick up any one in the series, and have a relatively reasonable idea of what to expect from the other volumes. And for those with a passing interest in this series, then there's probably no way that you really need to buy all volumes...but for me personally, each volume works so beautifully in a downtempo and chilled environment, that for me....I found that each volume worked perfectly for late-nights at home, when the music needs to be low, or just when you fancy listening to something electronic/electronica, but without any driving progression, and just something that locks you into a particular mindset (solitude, introspection, reading, working on the computer, etc...) but I found that the sophisticated, yet relaxed music worked so for well for me, that I ended up grabbing each volume, and never regretting each purchase.

This is probably not something I'd recommend to every one, as there'll be those that are expecting something eclectic, and progressive, and maybe even something that musically takes them places...and those people will be disappointed, with this purchase. Also, there will be some like ambient music, but find the whole exercise (primarily because of the "Pop" tag), a little too accessible and electronic-influenced to really engage. That's fine!!, as this was probably never complied with you in mind. Admittedly this is a series of volumes that takes you nowhere fast.....'But wasn't that the point of Downtempo/Chillout music in the first place??'.

        Customer Reviews:

        1 out of 5 stars A dissapointing compilation.......2005-03-01

You shouldn't buy this compilation, quite frankly, it sucks. A mix of cheezy dance and lazy trance wich makes for a boring evening. Sure there a few good songs in it (like Crazy, sexy, marverlous from paffendorf) but the vast majority of the songs range between average and mediocre or falls into the played out category (like "get down saturday night" from oliver cheatham wich is basically the same song as "make love".

        3 out of 5 stars It's OK.......2003-11-25

Not the best, not the worst, a couple of new songs here and there, a couple of nice trancey ones. I've heard better CDs

3 out of 5 stars You Can Live With or Without It........2003-04-14

"The Annual 2003" is a mix of the good, the bad, and the cheesy in dance music. True to its formula, Ministry of Sound takes 40 songs, trims them down to 3 minutes or less, and crams them into two CDs. While some of the material is good, cruising through a whopping 40 tracks on two 80-minute CDs is a sometimes exhausting exercise that proves that less is often more. But there are highlights in the form of DJ Sammy's cover of the Don Henley hit "Boys of Summer," Royksopp's frisky "Eple" (the track was released in 2001 but appears on a 2003 CD anyway); and Oliver Cheatham's "Get Down Saturday Night," a retro 70's jam that ends up being the lone grain of soul on these two CDs. Elsewhere, we get samples of hyper trance and house that ranges from the serviceable to the forgettable. And what's with the abundance of 80s covers? Soda Club's "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" works fine, but Novaspace's cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" is so cheesy it should be off limits to the lactose intolerant. The verdict? Not a bad CD collection, but not a very good one, either. On a scale of 1 to 10, "The Annual Spring 2003" rates a 6.
