Beautiful.......2003-10-04

Many have stated that Jealous is the best song on Faith and Courage, or the worse. I think it is one of the best. But you've probably heard the song so I won't comment on it. Instead I will write about the other two songs on this single.
Summer's End is a very nice song, something you can sing along to. It's a fun song, not serious in any way. But still, like most of Sinéad's material, this is a love song.
The other song, Full Circle, is the most beautiful song Sinéad has ever covered. Sinéad's voice is full and full of emotion. I'm shocked it didn't make it onto Faith and Courage. The song is almost a prayer to the dead. Just hearing her sing "Did you find peace there?" is enough to make anyone cry.

Spectacular, Polished Piece of Emotive Brilliance.......2002-09-20

The second single from Sinead O'Connor's critically acclaimed 2000 Atlantic debut 'Faith & Courage," Jealous was co-written with Dave Stewart...he of the spiked hair and former Annie Lennox home address. This is what O'Connor, the Irish Joan of Arc [person] Edith Piaf, does best--sing til the heart is trampled. A lush, gorgeous ballad about regret, loss, and accusation in love, the moody strings and synths make the perfect foil for what has to be one of this artist's most technically pure vocal performances ever. Why this was not the first single taken from the album is beyond me. Atlantic instead chose to offer the brilliantly anthemic (but polarizing) 'No Man's Woman,' and defeated the whole purpose of easing Ms. Controversy back into the mass public embrace. Too bad...'Faith & Courage' was an album that deserved to be heard by millions, and 'Jealous' would have done the trick, straight-out-of-the-box. Instead, O'Connor failed to tour at all behind this intimidating, multi-million dollar studio extravaganza, Atlantic dropped its campaign after a middling push at radio for 'Jealous', and Faith & Courage sold half a million when it should have been in every CD carousel on earth. Hopefully some A&R heads rolled at Atlantic for their failure to properly market this classic album and songs like this. And Sinead...you simply should have toured behind it, doing acoustic versions if you had to. Still...check out her new one 'Sean-nos Nua'...it's even more brilliant than anything she's done to date.

Easily one of the least appealing.......2000-11-01

As a Sinead O'Connor admirer for lots of years, I must say that this new piece of 'work' is incompetent. Apparently, people eaither love it or hate it, and I most definitely hate it. The problem is even though its a nice tune, it doesnt go anywhere, and seems very lazy and uninspired. You cant deny that. I agree that she has lost some of her earlier spunk, but this new single really crosses the line and shows her to be talentless. Please do NOT purchase this single, as all long time Sinead fans have more or less washed their hands off her with this release. Very disturbing. The CD cover is ugly too, as you can see.

Sinead's new album is easily among the best of the year, and this song is the best on the album! The cover of this single isn't a great pic, but the song is excellent. Yoy need to own the Faith and Courage album!

Perfect for the Season.......2005-11-19

I purchased this years ago and the enjoyment has grown every Christmas. Handel's Messiah is beautiful, The Nutcracker is a classic and the arrangement of hymns conveys the true wonders of the season. While there is a place for pop carols, these classics should be in every Christian's music library. I loved this so much, I actually purchased a complete replacement set when I lost one of the discs. Certainly an excellent value that any music lover would treasure.

FOR WHISTLING OR SINGING ALONG.......2003-12-28

The gifted Richard Hayman (Boston Pops arranger for more than 30 years) offers an interesting collection of holiday favourites. The back cover says "Orchestra and Chorus" - beware, there is no chorus. The sub-title "Philharmomic Symphony Orchestra" is rather pedantic. Why not simply "Richard Hayman and His Orchestra"? The opening and closing numbers are sing-along medleys... the liner notes offer the words. Two Leroy Anderson numbers receive a fair treatment: SLEIGH RIDE and SONG OF THE BELLS, the latter being played rrather slowly. There is a beautiful rendition of MUSIC BOX DANCER, the only version I know that uses the music box. The counter-melody is too loud and takes away the charm of the main theme. A few compositions by the conductor himself. A great collection for tree-trimming, whistling or singing along.

Great CD - Received Damaged.......2007-06-27

This CD was to be used for my May 19,2007 bride for her ceremony music.
The CD arrived damaged and Amazon did not have anymore in stock.
Thank God for an understanding bride.

Disappointing.......2004-10-31

A mostly music compilation that sounds like a creative mixing genius put it together. Saddly, the wedding entrance march is sung in German (I think). Some of the music is a little "thin" instead of being "full bodied". The wedding exit march will put listeners to sleep. I wish listening samples had been available or I would have saved the money.

In the liner notes for Classical Music for an Intimate Mood, John Tesh tells us he chose the disc's 13 compositions "with hopes of seduction and Eros in my own magical relationship." Maybe, he explains, they'll work for you, too. Maybe. It depends on your receptiveness to the solo piano renderings of Tesh's selections (works by Debussy, Rachmaninov, Bach, Schubert, and others) and the execution of the four participating pianists (Jon Novacek, Daniel Pollack, Anthony and Joseph Paratore). Tesh himself does not perform on this recording. Fans of Tesh's contemporary, often sentimental compositions may find that this collection of classical works lacks the immediacy and warmth that they might expect when hoping to generate an intimate mood. A bit formal in places or, in others, exhibiting too much vigor (notably "Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini" and Tchaikovsky's "June"), the disc, for all its good intentions, is an uneven experience, particularly for listeners with a modest classical background. It is capable of delivering some genuinely pleasant moments (particularly the concluding Schubert selections), though perhaps not enough of the heart-melting magic implied in the disc's title. --Terry Wood

Mood setter.......2007-02-22

This is definitely a mood-setting album. To say that this CD sets an intimate mood sounds cheesy, but it actually does. The soft piano sounds, accompanied by the orchestra background really does have a mood-changing effect. If you like classical pieces, but prefer the modernized sounds (minus the heavy instrumental sounds that generic classical CD's offer), this is a good album. Rachmaninov's "Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini" is one of my favorite all-time classical piece, and this version ranks up there with others I've enjoyed. "Clair de Lune" is also a Debussy classic that any classical music fans will easily recognize, and "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" is another one that most people will recognize. All pieces are played with a very soft tone and soothing backgrounds, so if you're looking for a classical CD compilation that you can play through without having to skip around for the best pieces, this is a good one.

Very soothing music with definite romance in the background if you're a romantic type. Very nice to listen to when needing to get a break from the stresses of the day.

John Tesh has created a timeless collection of masterpieces that evoke the spirtit and passion of love. The gorgeous repertoire is well chosen and flows seamlessly. The stirring piano performaces of Daniel Pollack, John Novacek, and Anthony & Joseph Paratore show that these world class artists were selected by Tesh for their ability to capture a romantic mood, and send the listener to new heights. I got this album a week ago and have left it in my CD player since! It's just gorgeous from beginning to end. Do yourself a favor and leave it in your CD player and push repeat. This album is perfect to put on when you are just wanting peace and relaxation, and even better when you snuggle up with your loved one... This is sure to set the right mood for Valentine's day. There is another recording of "Goodbye" by N.Melba on Victor 95012,released in the US in 1905.I wonder why it is not included in this "complete" Romophone release?

Just how much Nellie Melba can one take at one sitting? Judging by this set an awful lot and that is no mean achievement given the unflattering recording, and Melba's maddening habit of recording an aria again and again. Melba's singing lacks charm - judging from contemporary reports the lady could boast little of this anyway. But it has an astonishing technique, a limpid and glorious tone, and at times some indefinable but terribly moving quality. A great, great singer - in fact for my money marginally the best on record.

In a class by herself.......1999-11-23

Melba achieves perfection more often than any other singer (with the exception of Pol Plancon). Her phrases, her high notes, her ritardandi are beyond conventional emotion and beauty. There is something almost otherworldly in her best moments. In the grand Puccini arias, she seems at first too cool, too controlled. But you soon notice her supreme artistry as well as the fire, the sheer physical force just beneath the utterly smooth surface. In fact, she is sometimes more explosive, more dramatic, than the great Callas herself. And she gives so much of herself! In the Boheme arias, her generosity is perhaps most apparent. In marveling at one perfect top note after another, one almost does not realize how cohesive she can make the pieces seem, how architectural and intelligent her approach is.

Only One Melba.......1999-02-12

That was certainly Dame Nellie's assessment of herself, and she must have been something. Yes, both Peach Melba and Melba toast are named after her, and yes, she was worshipped. Even such a curmudgeon as Bernard Shaw could appreciate her greatness. Puccini praised the fact that she sang HIS music, not "Melba-Puccini." So why, then, do her recordings not reveal to us the scope of her artistry? Granted, we can marvel at the technical accomplishments (listen, for example, to the "Hamlet" mad scene, or "Sweet Bird") and occasionally catch a phrase that makes us understand what she was about, but she lacks the grandeur and opulence of Ponselle, or the tender vulnerability of Galli-Curci. It may be that Melba was, after all, an artist of the theatre, and that the cramped, primitive conditions of early recording studios simply did not inspire her to her greatest work. However, for devotees of Golden Age voices, this Romophone set is indispensible. The transfers are masterfully done, so that even those allergic to the acoustic sound of early recordings will not be bothered.
