5 out of 5 stars classic, mind melting electronic music.......2003-09-13

This guy from Newport Beach doesn't have a clue...I bought this about the time it came out which was near a decade ago and it remains one of the most treasured albums I own. You just don't come across stuff like this every day, month, even year.If you like electronic soundscapes and beats, snatch this one up if you can find it. Weatherall in top form here, giving you that late night, ultra dubbed and tripped out groove that he's so much appreciated for; scary yet serene referals throughout the flawless river of production. By now, "Weatherall is god" is so cliche, ya know??? Smoke em if you got em.

I heard a dub reggae song I liked by the Sabres of Paradise. I assumed they did dub reggae. So I bought this CD. It's not dub reggae. It's (garbage).

4 out of 5 stars Andrew Weatherall's old band in full flow.......2001-10-14

It's quite an album. Some tracks are very upfront while others just pulse away in the background.

Well, what do I mean? OK. 'Bubble and Slide' starts off all of a sudden with this bouncy rhythm that you can't ignore and evolves into a very complex track full of organ and keyboard washes. Then it's the brilliant 'Wilmot' with its brass band march beginning. Now that is an opening!

'Tow Truck' goes all James Bond on us and then we're into the more ambient side of things. Tracks such as 'Chapel Street Market' just pulse with waves of atmospherics swooshing through the speakers. It somewhat lends to the eerie feel of the album with its title and storybook insert.

'Haunted Dancehall' is a great track to finish the album. Heard here in its original form, it remains as scary as ever!

I will agree that this is an amazing CD, but something that wasn't mentioned properly is that this is the first Sabres project, their ground breaking explosion release with the ultra talented Andrew Weatherall at the helm. Basically, anything Weatherall touches is gold and you should just buy it, 'nuff said. Their later stuff gets more "experimental". Take that as you will.

Damn...This album is a much more developed and layered with better beats than the later two lone swordsmen projects (which are not that bad. The synthesis of funky dub bass beats mixed with nice drum arrangments makes for a chill time to groove to while watching larry king on the t.v. with no sound. Thumbs up and groove out.
