5 out of 5 stars DRUMM&BASS QUEEN.......2006-05-22

I LUV THIS CD!!!!!!!!! Progression Sessions, VOL. 5 is my favorite LTJ bukem CD ever and if you are a true Bukem fan you have to add this CD to your collection of Bukem classics.

5 out of 5 stars LTJ IS THE SHH..........2003-09-02

This is a gem right here. Forget his Earth series, LTJ's Progression Sessions are where its at! The beats are hot and a little jazzy-just like I like it!!!!! If you've never heard LTJ live, you definitely missed out. He is THE BEST electronica dj ever!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-09-26

Sorry people, but I found this one disappointing, the continual mix seems to go on a bit, not like Bukem's other stuff at all.
It does indeed sound like the live set he played last year, but somehow there just isn't enough variety. The second CD being purely instrumental is a bit of a rip off really.

5 out of 5 stars Instant groove :).......2001-09-07

I bought this album shortly before seeing LTJ and MC Conrad play live in Tallahassee, Florida. The show was amazing and this album captures the performance brilliantly. While not recorded live, there is a definite energy about the whole album with the ebbs and flows in all the right places. Conrad's vocals blend effortlessly into LTJ's silky smooth mixes and to havw one without the other would be wrong. Brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars This album is increadible.......2001-08-25

Although some of the lyrics are well recycled from the other Progression Sessions, the beats make this album absolutelly unique. I can't believe anyone can mix d'n'b so well. While not quite as intense as PS4, this album is still a top notch production. Extremelly groovy, easy to get into right from the get go, this disk made me upgrade my car stereo.

5 out of 5 stars Great new format, Live.......2002-05-14

This album captures the new sound of LTJ, the beats are funky to start and seamlessly work up to a classic cerebral-driving sound that we have come to love from our friends at good looking. I like how they have captured the more up-tempo sound of what they actually play live on this album, it really shows the dynamic of a live Bukem & Conrad performance of which I have been to many. Then there is the instrumental which is basically the same thing set up in the studio without conrad. It goes to show you how bukem is a machine, he sounds the same in the studio or live, even after a few spliffs. Conrad's flow is less rapping and more chanting, a distinction that is lost on most people who review these albums. The chant is a totally different type of vocalism, and it has more to do with precussion along with the beat than it does with lyrics, but since Conrad is so skilled lyrically, it adds a whole mind-blowing dynamic to the dance experience. I guess you have to come at it from the drum and bass roots rather than the hip-hop to fully appreciate it.

5 out of 5 stars Anything from Good Looking Records........2002-04-02

This album is recommended. LTJ Bukem has been out since a long time continuing to produce one of the best DNB albums and compilations out there.

5 out of 5 stars You've got nothing if you don't have options.......2001-11-12

This is a great live album. Both LTJ and MC Conrad blend music and vocals seamlessly. As usual, the energy is high without being distracting. The mixes are smooth and well balanced. If you just want to listen to the music, play the other CD and worry no more. I think MC Conrad adds a certain dash and smartness to the mix but it's nice to have choices. Like my daddy said "The secret to life is having options."

4 out of 5 stars Excellent - Despite the rambling vocals.......2001-11-04

I liked LTJ's music alot but MC Conrad's "rapping" got to be a bit annoying after a while. Fortuneatly, Conrad's routine does'nt overshadow the great sounding music.

4 out of 5 stars phat, but haven`t we heard it before??.......2001-10-16

With Progression Sessions Vol. 6, LTJ Bukem once again steps up, delivering precision beats and basslines enveloped in swirling atmospherics. The combination, when done right, can be a potent one; however, the question remains...haven`t we heard it before?
Let me say that I am a huge fan of Good Looking, Looking Good, 720 Degrees, Nexus, etc. The music manages to be both energizing and relaxing, a sublime contrast. Even through the countless titles released over the years, the music can still sound fresh, with newer producers such as Makoto and J-Laze exploring new dimensions of sound and incorporating new influences.
The music contained within Vol. 6 is no different- from deep to funky and usually a combination of both, it remains consistent with and even further solidifies GLR`s reputation. The quality of tracks is not the issue that I personally have with this release. I just feel a bit cheated.
For starters, there is not a great spectrum of artists represented. Therefore, the set contains diversity tempered by similar sounding tracks. For example, Makoto always keeps things jazzy and Nookie always keeps things a little on the harder side; there is precious little space in between. The main issue I have, though, is the fact that certain track on Vol. 6 have been realeased previously, on the lackluster Logical Progression Vol. 4. I know that Vol. 6 is a live set, and as such Bukem will blend material both old and new, but to pay 2,400 yen to listen to tracks I already have on a previous release seems a little, well, cheap.
Aside from this caveat, however, Conrad sounds nice (even if he does use recycled rhymes; `can I get a vote from the good vibe commitee` being a contender for the most overused, lamest sounding line this side of `bout it, bout it`). Bukem is, as ever, the consummate DJ, blending the tracks perfectly and releasing the music`s energy while still allowing it space to breathe.
In conclusion, I would have given this collection 5 stars, if not for the issues mentioned above. These are, I feel, relevant, especially to the avid fan of Bukem etc; however, this does not mean that I will stop buying new GLR material on sight. Just a suggestion for Bukem and crew, however...perhaps placing the tracklisting of the album on the outside of the case would allow us, the consumers, to have an idea of what we`re getting into before we purchase your product.

An Instrumental Presentation of the First with MC Conrad.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is about the best in drum & bass!.......2003-11-23

I was introduced to this album in 1998, and I still listen to it regularly with delight, it's a favorite in my collection. This cd made me love D & B and I became a great fan of LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad. For those tired of the big-beat, hard drum & bass, or just for those looking for an introduction to the genre, this is perfect. The first cd is live (I mean completely, no computers there), with MC Conrad, you definetely feel the extatic vibe of that show and makes you hope you could go back in time and be there. The other cd is instrumental, in studio. Both offer a different sound, infused with jazz, and full of that atmospheric sound that was caracteristic of drum & bass at that time. They don't do records like this anymore, sadly.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2001-04-20

I was becoming much less interested in the genre as the frequent reuse of samples and the same drum machine patterns produced a music that was tiresome at best. A co-worker from the UK was amazed that a New Yorker was interested in the genre and had nothing but accolades for Bukem after noticing my copy of Progression Sessions 3. After purchasing this album, I can only say Bukem is spectacular and MC Conrad is excellent. The vocal in addition to the instrumental disk provide a unique listening opportunity

5 out of 5 stars A m a z i n g Dj !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2000-09-27

Although in both cds the songs are the same except of course the fact that in the fisrt one is with McConrad and in the other one is the instrumental cd..... the only thing that I can say is that LTJ Bukem knows how to excite you and how to calm you down! Chill out music in combination with Drum and Base!!!! Thanks Ltj

5 out of 5 stars I see the light..........2000-09-25

More I listen, more I like. I purchased this disc 2-3 weeks ago and I should confess, even though I've been a huge Bukem fan, I didn't like the cd as much as I hoped I would. But since it's by Bukem the great, I didn't let go.

A few more days after purchase and a few more rounds in the disc player, I conquered. This is the PERFECT type of music to chill out cruisin' through the glow of new york city lights. I absolutely LOVE the Big Bud tracks especially the second track on the cd. I wasn't impressed at all by Rantoul's style at first but now it makes great sense to me. And Conrads style gives the music an EXCELLENT angle that creates something so real and so different. VERY mature, VERY straight forward, VERY awesome music altogether. "Butterfly" is also another excellent song. I'm looking forward to listening to it again cuz man, it's gettin' better more I play.

WOW! Now I see where it's going, don't you love it when that happens?

5 out of 5 stars Joyful sound experience.......2000-08-07

A beautiful musical surprise coming from Good Looking Records. Seductive bass lines and vivid rhythms make the perfect surface for wide and oceanic harmonies. Both relaxing and meditative. MC Conrad's vocal performance makes the necessary distinction. Excellent use of echoes combined with extrinsic voice. In my opinion this is the best Progression Sessions disk so far.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It only gets better.......2002-01-07

Sage's rise to fame in the drum and bass scene has been incredibly fast. The reason is quite simple: she's that good. Now, this phenomenal DJ/DnB producer has released her first full length album. While it's impossible to capture the energy of Sage spinning live on a packed dance floor, this album does come close.

More details

The selection on the album is overall excellent. A number of 'Sage standards' are included in the mix, such as: 'Warp one', 'Koka', 'Just a vision' and 'Invid'. Any fan of Sage's will recognize these instantly. This album also includes some tracks fresh off the press, such as Klute's fusion of trance and DnB in 'Tranceformat'. This song alone is worth the price of the CD.

The mixing on the CD is flawless. This is no small feat considering that all mixes were recorded live (Dieselboy is probably the most famous DJ for this style of recording). As another reviewer has pointed out the mixing between Juju's 'Ancestros' and Dieselboy's 'Invid' and 'Decent' is nothing short of spectacular. The latter song is also available on Dieselboy's 6ixth Session but has a rightful place on this album since it's actually a remix by the Punckateck crew, which Sage is a member of. It's a testament to the skillful mixing on this CD that it includes a good variety of drum and bass tracks and manages to keep it all together in perfect harmony (compare 'Bombjack' with 'Tranceformat').

Bottom line(s)

If you're in the hardstep/techstep crew you'll definitely like this album. If you like Dieselboy or DJ Dara you will love this album. And if you don't like it the first time you listen, listen again - it only gets better!

5 out of 5 stars Damn this girl gots skills.......2001-11-27

This girl has got mad skills on the tables. She makes most D&B DJs tremble at her feet. If you like drum and bass on a vocal tip, this is the CD for you. The track selection is awesome and I like how she throws in a Dieselboy track in her mix. Her style is west coast jungle, like Hive and UFO!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars cute package, but contents drone.......2003-12-15

i thought this cd would be excellent, like those i have heard from other outstanding NYC djs like Dara or Reid Speed. unfortunately, it is not- in my opinion. the tracks selected are boring - played all together the way she does it. maybe each one alone might be tolerable, if juxtaposed with some more complex rhythms or some melody, vocals, anything! but it seems like one long boring clanking track all the way through. she attempts variation with track 2 but goes nowhere with it. i was extremely disapointed. no real melody or variation here, just unoriginal, unspirited dark middle of the road D&B.

5 out of 5 stars The girl is simply amazing........2003-12-07

This mix is great. Starts out incredibly mellow, almost an ambient track, then builds up and hits full force. It continues to swell and ebb the length of the disc. She has a good feel for her music, and places the tracks well. If you want an intro to some of the more technical dnb, pick this up you'll enjoy it; if you already know what you like, the track listings speak for themselves. Sessions 2 is on my heavy rotation list of cd's. And, she's pleasing on the eyes to boot!

5 out of 5 stars True to the Dance Floor.......2003-01-14

I've heard those other mix CDs: Reid Speed, Dieselboy, DB, Sage, etc. They are good. But this one is better. On Stateside Sessions 2, the song selections and mixing stay true to the dance floor. This is Drum and Bass just the way I like it. It reminds me of a late night out in NYC. I can definitely tell that Empress came out of that NYC junglist culture. Techy, tribal, fast.

You'll notice that the really BAD reviews below came from users who live in NYC. They probably have other reasons for disliking her, such as being competing NYC DJs, and one guy really doesn't give any details at all, as if all he wanted to do was lower her score maliciously. He didn't back up his bad review with any reasoning. My suspicion is that they have something personal against her (almost everyone in NYC has beef with one another) which has nothing to do with the quality of this CD.

Empress has so many great songs on this CD, including one by Juju and another from Phunkatech Communications. Breakbeatscience Recordings is also represented right up front. This is US Drum and Bass at its finest, with the entire country represented. This is the ONLY music that can get me on the dancefloor, so it has my full recommendation.

3 out of 5 stars Definitely not the WORST D'n'B artist around!.......2002-09-14

There are many fine drum and bass artists in the world and no matter what someone tells you or a review tells you about Empress, she is awesome at what she does, though it is out of the ordinary. Empress's style is a bit on the tweeked side of drum and bass, which is not for the majority of jungle fans. She throws down a great little mix here for everyone to enjoy, though I am sure this mix is not the best I have ever heard from her. If you like female drum and bass, you should also look for Sage, Reid Speed, Miss K, and Dazee to quench your rinsing thirst.

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2002-09-09

This cd is not that great. Don't waste your money.

IM FAMILIAR WITH ABOUT 5 OF THE ARTIST ON HERE , ULTRA NATE PROBABLY BEING MY FAVORITE. HER SONG TWISTED FROM HER LAST CD IS HERE IT'S LAID BACK JAZZ TRACK WITH HER HUSH VOCALS IS ENOUGH TO PUT ANYONE IN THE MOOD. N'DAMBI AND SEEK DELIVER THE OTHER 2 STAND OUT TRACKS WITH MAD HOUSE FLAVOR. THIS IS GREAT SOUL/DANCE MUSIC AT ITS BEST. NO TRACK IS WORTH SKIPPING OVER.

5 out of 5 stars A renaissance of soul music and spoken word..........2002-12-17

Giant Step Records has long been on the vanguard of burgeoning soul. "Soul Sessions" is no exception. A truly novel recording, "'Sessions" unites a wide range of talent under one musical umbrella. Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, Jody Watley, Ultra Naté and Donnie are just some of the artists featured here.

Sonically, the collection is an enticing mix of soul, jazz and electronica. Funk and soul exist alongside chillout and drums 'n bass tracks quite appealingly.

Ultra Naté's "Twisted" and Jody Watley's "Saturday Night Experience" are both jazzy excursions into chillout territory, whereas Donnie's "Our New National Anthem" is more consistent with traditional soul; Herbie Hancock featuring Chaka Khan's "The Essence" gets a drums n' bass reworking by Joe Claussell, and Seek's "Ever After" is allusive to disco.

This is a brilliant collection with absolutely no filler. In addition to the tracks already mentioned, standouts include Carl Hancock Rux's "Ground", Imani Uzuri's "Again" and Shawn Lee's "Happiness".

"Soul Sessions" is a brilliantly conceived and executed experiment that not only reaffirms, but redefines the definition of soul.

    4 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2002-09-25

I can't understand why adult contemporary radio stations never play music like this. Despite of a couple of skippable songs, this is one of the best compilation CDs I own. The highlights would be (my favorite)"In a Heartbeat", "Twisted" and "Future Love" and the disco flavored "Again".

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Compilations of the Year.......2002-07-05

The influential label Giant Steps digs deep and compiles slammin' jams that have passed radio's radar screen on the lush "Soul Sessions." While modern r&b collections grow repulsively trendy, this album offers slammin soulful grooves from names that may be familiar to the average Joe Schmo as well as other tracks from lesser-known artists. Standouts include the mellowed out jazz of Ultra Nate in "Twisted," as well as Jody Watley's "Saturday Night Experience," a welcome diversion from her dance pop of the 1980s. My favorite track is the funkified "Our New National Anthem" by Donnie. All in all, this is a groovilicious collection that should appeal to soul snobs and casual listeners alike.

4 out of 5 stars Giant Step Records continues to drop gems.......2002-06-03

The assiduous efforts of Giant Step Records payed off with this release of soulful gems. Underground music just gets better and better with record companies like GiantStep. Mainstream misses out again.........in to be honest, I don't care because I don't give radio much time in my home or car. The dulcet vibe of this entire CD is something to cherish in anybodys soul collection, dance collection or just an underground enthusiast.

    5 out of 5 stars Christagau's review informs us.......2003-09-10

The latest Matthew Shipp- William Parker collaboration... no drummer. All beats electronic, generated by Brooklyn production duo Danny Blume and Chris Kelly, who relax into patterns that leave room for Parker to bend his bass toward an equivalent of the body groove that jazz folk associate with swing. Only this groove doesn't swing-it's more like techno that realized acid jazz was garbage and went back home to mama. Shipp riffs, hooks, and decorates, leaving theme and cognitively dissonant variation to name trumpeter Roy Campbell and two trombonists. Not deep, not intense.
