Description

Formed in 1995 by the family of the legendary guitarist, Experience Hendrix has earned wide praise for its restoration of the Jimi Hendrix catalog and efforts to expand the legacy of one of popular music's greatest artists. Janie Hendrix, president and CEO of Experience Hendrix, remains steadfast in efforts to protect the guitarist's legacy. "We will continue to safeguard Jimi's incredible musical legacy as best as we can, making it available to fans with the best possible quality." As a result of this unique focus on expanding Hendrix's profile, interest in Jimi Hendrix remains at an all-time high. The most recent Experience Hendrix DVD release, Jimi Plays Berkeley, debuted on the Billboard video chart at #9. Other releases by the company have enjoyed similar praise and commercial success. Rolling Stone called The Jimi Hendrix Experience, a four-CD box set issued in September 2000, "the Rolls Royce of box sets," and the Band Of Gypsys: Live At The Fillmore East earned a GRAMMY® Award in 2000 for Best Long Form Music Video. The theatrical film Blue Wild Angel: Jimi Hendrix Live At The Isle Of Wight has enjoyed wide critical approval and was featured as part of the New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center. Songs include: Are You Experienced (Musiq), Spanish Castle Magic (Santana), Purple House (Prince), The Wind Cries Mary (Sting), Voodoo Chile [Slight Return] (Earth, Wind & Fire), Power Of Soul (Bootsy Collins featuring George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars), Burning of the Midnight Lamp (Eric Clapton), Have You Ever Been [To Electric Ladyland] (Lenny Kravitz), Who Knows (Devoted Spirits featuring George Duke), Purple Haze (Robert Randolph & The Family Band), Little Wing (Chaka Khan & Kenny Olson), Castles Made of Sand (Sounds of Blackness), May This Be Love (Eric Gales), Foxy Lady (Cee-Lo), Red House (John Lee Hooker), Little Wing/3rd Stone From The Sun (Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble).

4 out of 5 stars Last word on the poser Prince.......2006-09-20

The other reviewers have covered the quality of this tribute - it has to be the best of the many that have been attempted. Jimi's legacy to rock music and his impact is still growing (listen to the guitar work on the new Chili Pepper's lp for instance). Unfortunately - the poser Prince is on this tribute cd. FYI - ladies and gentlemen - many, many years ago - around the time Purple Rain was released, I saw an interview with Prince on TV. In that interview he proclaimed to the interviewer and the world, and I quote, "I'm a better guitarist than Jimi Hendrix EVER was....". Now the only response I had at that time (once my dropped jaw left the floor and returned to it's normal position) was to walk over to my coffee table, pick up my copy of the Purple Rain LP, and smash it to bits against the corner of the table. It felt good. I gather when Prince cashed his check for his egotistical contribution of "Purple House" he neglected to mention his previous comments about Jimi. Prince - what a poser and a fraud and a has been that never was. Jimi was the best

5 out of 5 stars Both powerful and souful--my first and probably only Hendrix collaboration tribute.......2006-02-13

I don't generally buy various artist tribute CDs, but the disk was on half-price and the lineup of artists covering Jimi was too good to pass up. I'm especially impressed that this is a multiracial, multinational, and multigenerational cast, which really makes up Jimi's fanbase. Two complaints: I know Prince's thing is Purple, but change the title of the song to Purple House--sorry, it just loses something there. And, I'd really have loved to see Angelique Kidjo on this CD doing her version of "VooDoo Child."

5 out of 5 stars POWER OF SOUL - JIMI HENDRIX'S MUSIC.......2005-07-08

I think this cd was very good. I especially liked Prince, Earth, Wind & Fire, Santana, and Bootsy's versions of Jimi's songs. It was an over all worthwhile experience.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty sweet for a 'tribute' album, the best of its kind.......2005-04-06

Tribute albums are usually a mixed affair, and few really hold up as albums, but this one comes close. It succeeds on so many levels for several reasons. First, the man it pays tribute to, Jimi Hendrix, is an indisputable legend; his reputation is so widespread, kids who've never heard his music know who he is. So not surprisingly, he's had an enormous influence on a wide variety of musicians, which brings us to a second reason why this collection succeeds: the participating musicians. The line-up here is so impressive because each artist is so different from the other, yet each one has some connection to him, either as a collaborator, as an artist he influenced, or as a friend.

Organized by the Hendrix estate, this disc has plenty of highlights: "Purple House" by Prince and former Sly & the Family Stone bassist Larry Graham showcases Prince's amazing guitar skills - the best track, and from an artist who, like Hendrix, managed to be a great innovator and commercial success while crossing the barrier between rock and r&b. Carlos Santana and Living Colour's Corey Glover perform an excellent cover of "Spanish Castle Magic," with an inspired jazz rhythm section: bassist Stanley Clarke and the late, great Tony Williams, arguably the greatest drummer of all-time. Elsewhere, Sting sings and plays bass on a cover of "The Wind Cries Mary," which has some searing guitar work by John McLaughlin; George Clinton and Bootsy Collins (of Parliament/Funkadelic/etc.) shake it up with "Power of Soul," Chaka Khan and Kid Rock's guitarist Kenny Olson do a strong version of "Little Wing," the late, great blues legend John Lee Hooker covers "Red House" (actually a track from a previous John Lee CD; he passed away before he could record something new, so they selected this as a tribute to him as well), and an awesome live recording of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble performing "Little Wing" and "3rd Stone..." from Oct, 20, 1983 in Philadelphia for the King Biscuit Flour Hour. Granted, none of these covers 'surpass' the originals, and there are some mild disappointments, like an Eric Clapton/Chic collaboration on "Burning Of The Midnight Lamp" (a real letdown) and Lenny Kravitz's contribution, but as tributes go, this is surprisingly good, the kind you'll actually listen to again.

1 out of 5 stars Hendrix is rolling in is grave.......2005-01-08

This album is very very bad. If Hendrix were still alive we would thorw it out with the garbage. Artsits like Clapton, Santana, Hooker, and Vaughn, make decent efforts but still should not have even attempted. Tribute albums almost always suck, and this one files right into line. Artists like Cee-Lo and Lenny Kravitz (who has immatated Hendrix for years, very very poorly i might add) have no business on this album at all. Hendrix was more than a legend, he was a God. and for these artists to make these terrible covers is blasphemy. I hope that if you area true Jimi H4endrix fan that you do not buy this album.

If you are a Prince/ classical music fan, get this CD. The cd contains all of the song from the Purple Rain soundtrack, plus 3 bonus tracks. Most of the songs have a classical music feel to them (some are almost jazzy), but they still stay very true to the spirit of the original soundtrack. I am very impressed with the CD and the exactness if the tracks as compared to the original soundtrack. Wanna sing to the songs? Go ahead, it's a perfect classical replica with specific instruments giving a nod to Prince's yows and screams. Prince fans... Buy this CD, you need this CD! :)

    5 out of 5 stars Vintage Newman..........2005-03-29

Nothing else on this disc will surpass the the bold hauntingly beautiful Cathy's theme from the "Wuthering Heights"suite.
We are then given lesser known selections from the 1930s, 40s era
of Alfred Newmans extraordinary film score output. "Prince of Foxes" the Italian renaissance historical novel wasn't even shot in technicolor, but we are given a marvelous panoramic Newman score, complimenting the period costumes and sets. The seductive theme from "David and Bathsheba" is a bit reminicent of R Straus's "Dance of the Seven Vails" but not as beefy in orchestration nor development. "Dragonwyck" is another gothic piece of dark romanticism, with music focusing on eleagant melody with a touch of saddness. In "Prisoner of Zelda" the regal music grandly depicts the the fictional Kingdom of Ruritania. This score was used in 1937 and again in the 1952 remake. Lastly the march from "Brigham Young" ends this disc with the bold determination in music of the Mormon's trek from Illinois to Utah in 1840, and the setting of their domain.
The New Zealand forces are to be commended for their committed playing along with the cinema sonics captured by the engineers. The liner notes list every score Alfred Newman has written from 1930 to "Airport" in 1970.

4 out of 5 stars Must for Wuthering Heights Fans.......2004-10-04

Wonderful tribute to Alfred Newman, the Wuthering Heights suite alone is enough to buy this CD! Beautiful and moving music indeed!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful recording of Newman's early music.......2003-08-07

It has been a long time since a film music recording has captured my imagination and become virtually unforgettable, working its way into my thoughts through the days following my first hearing it. Seldom do I agree with others about the merits of albums released with the usual repeats of themes available on a dozen other recordings. Because of this, I have been accused of being a world-class curmudgeon (among other things) when it comes to preferring faithfulness to a composer+s work, rather than embracing the uninspired and pedantic interpretations we all-too-often get.

It is, therefore, with trepidation -- and with joy -- that I highly recommend to you Koch International+s "Wuthering Heights: A Tribute to Alfred Newman," Richard Kaufman conducting the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. The program features Wuthering Heights (12:40), Prince of Foxes (13:19), David and Bathsheba (love theme -- 3:44), Dragonwyck (8:43), The Prisoner of Zenda (7:01), and Brigham Young (5:18).

This album was lovingly produced by the late Tony Thomas, and Edward B. Powell's original orchestrations were preserved throughout. The ambient sound on this disc is wonderful and could serve as a standard for other re-recording projects. Not only are the selections representative of Newman's genius as a film composer, they are performed with impassioned fervor -- and with fidelity to tempo and nuance rarely achieved by other interpreters of Newman's work.

The CD begins with a generous suite arranged by Fred Steiner for "Wuthering Heights," encompassing all the major motifs of Newman's score -- Despair - Twin Motives; Cathy's Theme; Wuthering Heights Motive - The Moors; The Children (Wuthering Heights the early days); The Playcastle; Cathy the Fine Young Lady; Isabella; and Edgar Linton - The Grange. Steiner missed nothing in this arrangement -- it is replete with Newman's trademark sounds, all beautifully performed, including ethereal strings evoking the moors and some hauntingly wonderful instrumental solos. (That haunting, almost eerie string effect made equally impressive appearances in such scores as "Song of Bernadette" and "Twelve O'Clock High"). There are passages within this suite that achieve a purity of sound I've rarely heard. As the Cathy theme is restated in the closing moments, a youth choir is used to near-stunning effect. The suite fully realizes the poignancy and staggering intensity of Newman's score and sound. The New Zealand Symphony is a magnificent body of musicians and it is expertly conducted throughout this disc's program.

The wonderful opening selection is a listening experience that, for Newman lovers, should be nearly cathartic. Because of this, it's probably best to take a breather before continuing on to the magnificent presentation of "Prince of Foxes.". This suite was edited by Tony Thomas and Kaufman leads his orchestra from the explosive opening of percussion of the Prelude through the major motifs of Newman's score for this renaissance film. Borgia's Triumphal March will be more familiar to many as the 'Rescue of Demetrius' from "The Robe" (and it was originally
written for "Hunchback of Notre Dame"), but as is true of all Newman's cross-referenced works, the piece takes on new life with gorgeously different and striking orchestrations. The sequence beginning with Theme Development and continuing through to the end is a stunning orchestral conversation, starting in the flutes, then taken up by cello and violin, interrupted by fanfare, then taken back over by the string section which engages in a wonderful counterpoint exercise. The suite ends majestically with an organ leading into a restatement of the main theme and concluding with full orchestra fortissimo.

The shortest selection in this program is a mesmerizing reading of Newman's love theme from "David and Bathsheba." There are more than 3 minutes of Newman's music here and each second is a gem. It begins with the strings shimmering through the sensual seductive phrases of both the film's main title and Bathsheba's bath scene and segues into a gorgeous reading of the love motif (known in some quarters as 'Rapture of Love') in which the NZO is so beautifully in control that it seems to caress the notes as it weaves a spell. It is contemplative, soulful and searingly heartfelt.

The "Dragonwyck" suite, edited by Tony Thomas, begins with Main Title and Opening, in which the orchestra explodes into a foreboding, gothic maelstrom of sound and then segues into a jaunty, lilting tune. The Dragonwyck theme follows and has a plaintive, yearning quality that evolves into a beautiful light waltz (The Wells Family). The music turns sinister in Miranda, with high strings in a mysterioso passage. Dr. Turner closes the suite (and possibly the film?) with a somber, plaintive restatement of the Dragonwyck theme in the strings and then a full orchestral conclusion.

"The Prisoner of Zenda" is one of the best movies ever made and Newman's score to this film is one of the finest ever written. Arranged by Christopher Palmer -- and titled "A Ruritanian Rhapsody for Orchestra" -- Kaufman and the NZO give this music a robust, rapturous reading, complete with fanfares and ariations -- from tender to majestic -- of the regal main theme which serves double duty as a theme of dynastic tradition and as a love theme. There is also swashbuckling bravado representing the rescue of the Prince, the sword fight and the escape of Rupert of Hentzau. This score, in fact, served notice that Alfred Newman not only greatly admired Erich Wolfang Korngold, but could hold his own writing in the Korngoldian style. "Zenda" is a Newman score that deserves to be recorded in its entirety, but this suite beautifully captures many of its highlights. I wanted much more, but this will do.

The final selection is the rousing "Brigham Young: A Symphonic March,." adapted and arranged by Fred Steiner "from The March, 'The Trek,' and the hymn tune by William W. Phelps 'the Spirit of Gold like a fire is burning.'" (from the booklet notes). There is a wonderful "pioneer" flavor to this robust march, and it is a rhythmic crowd-pleaser.
