Great Intro to Lotus.......2005-08-24
This was a good introduction to Lotus. Excellent chill-out disc.
good shtuff.......2005-02-07
This music is extremely simple.. composed of jazzy guitars and drums with quick jabs of high pitched synthesizer, I found this album a little too much to listen to all the way through the first time. There is defenitely more natural instruments than anything synthetic. The drummer is excellent, as is the guitarists, but the music in itself is a little bland if you've never heard anything like it before. After the second listening, I found it to be very relaxing. It's defenitely something you have to get used to. The melody lacks alot though, and can be repetative if it's all your focusing on is catchy electronic melodies .It defenitely requires patience. If you're looking for something upbeat and catchy like The first New deal cd, this is not for you. If you're looking for something more simple, with elements of jazz and funk with great percussion and soft organic electronic undertones and cheerful chirpy melodies, this is for you. ^_^
Funky Psychedelicia.......2004-08-30
While this is a top 10 live album, it doesn't do the live Lotus sound justice. If you have yet to see them live it will rock your f**kin' socks!
The Best of 2003 - The BEST of ALL TIME.......2004-01-05
Germination is one of my favorite albums of 2003, if not of all time. I come from a strict background of classic rock, however, I love this album. I recommend this album to ANYONE with the slightest amount of taste. I started listening to Lotus in late 2002, early 2003. When I went to Bonnaroo 2003, we took a boom box with us. Whenever we were back at our tents, we were listening to LOTUS! Most of us had never even heard them before, but we couldn't get enough. Germination is amazing! LOTUS ROCKS!
Best LiveTronica CD of the year!.......2003-12-31
The best thing about this CD is that it can work for anytime of the day in almost any setting. Background music for work or for relaxing or turn it up to really get groovin'. Beautiful music that will lift your spirits!

Customer Reviews:
PK is great.......2001-12-28
Being a long time, die-hard fan of LOA, I've heard lots of examples of Praga's stylings. His solo work somehow manages to surpass even them sometimes in his powerful tracks, and this album isn't an exception. Praga puts a lot of energy into his music, which is obvious from the start of the CD. If you enjoy edgy, driving, thumping basslines, mixed with intelligent sprinklings of lyrics and relaxing melodies, this album has them all.
Praga's early years.......2001-01-27
Hello everyone, I'm a belgian fan from Praga Khan. I know his work for years now. Praga (Maurice Engelen), who is a belgian too, started to make his kind of dance music at the end of the eighties. At that time, here in Belgium, it was called "New Beat". I'm gonna spare you the history of New Beat, the only thing I can tell you about this is, Praga Khan was at that time one of the major composers and producers of the belgian house-scene. His music was played all over the clubs in Belgium and even all over Europe. A few examples of his projects are: "Major Problem - Acid Queen", "Lords of Acid - I Sit On Acid", "Jade 4 U - That Boy"... . If you can find these ones, you really have too, it's worth it. Of course you can't compare that music with the one he's making the last couple of years. "Mutant Funk" is magnificent, "Twenty First Century Skin" was even better. My message to you people is: the ones who already know Praga, try to find his retro eighties work and for the ones who don't know him, just buy his latest two albums and enjoy the art of good dance music.
Greetings to you all. Chris
Excellent.......2000-12-11
When I first listened to this one I liked it but thought 21st Century Skin was better. "Breakfast in Vegas" and some of the others from that one were getting alot of play in the clubs here. But Mutant Funk has really been growing on me. "The Power of the Flower", "Keep the Dream Alive", etc. have some cool energy going. It is now my favorite of Praga's work. If you're into the techo, industrial or rave style, definitely check this one out.
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES.......2000-10-12
YES INDEED! PRAGA HAS SPOKEN!
Praga Kahn appeals to the masses.......2000-10-10
I am another Praga Khan fan who was introduced via the Lords of Acid. His Pragmatic album took me a bit to adjust (seeing how I expected a lot of similarity with the LOA), but it grew on me a lot. And 21stCenturySkin, I loved Vivions and Imaginations. But Mutant Funk just seems more detailed. There is a lot more sampling and sounds layered into each piece, and there is a lot of variety. For example, Praga changes his style in Sayonara Greetings, which has a drum'n'bass feel to it (reminded me of AK1200). The Power of the Flower is both relaxing and upbeat, almost trance-like. Although I like the whole album, for hard-hitting stuff (like the Pragmatic album), the last track, Eyeless in El Paso, brings some serious energy (although the distorted voice is awkward). If you're like me and don't care about specific genres but rather good songs, this has something for everyone. Highly recommended!

On this first volume of a proposed "autobiography" of his listening career, producer King Britt updates the sound of the black radio of 1970s Philly with 1990s rap and production tricks. He makes sonic references to the smooth flow of Gamble and Huff as well as to the drawled proto-rap poetry of the Last Poets, and Britt honors mellow diva disco with a gorgeous, faithful-in-its-fashion cover of "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life." The loops he pulls out of his crates are from a time when black and white pop nourished each other; the album has the deceptively utopian glow of nostalgia, but it radiates with soul and warmth, too. --Douglas Wolk
Customer Reviews:
The last great black ALBUM of the 1990s.......2006-05-16
My title may be extreme to some of you, but I really do feel this way. By the time, this album actually came out, there were countless Maxwell wannabes, D'Angelo had virutally disappeared, and female R&B was being dominated by a skinny, headwrap, wearin' sista from Texas. In all honesty, everyone was starting to sound like everyone else.
If I hadn't stumbled into Tower Records and decided to check this one out on the listening station, I would've never known about this album. It's a great ALBUM...meaning it's great from start to finish. And because this is a "concept" album (an overused term, but anyway...) a film without pictures so to speak, you almost HAVE to listen to the album from start to finish. In all honesty, I owned the album for several months before I learned to appreciate it as a great album.
The song that made me purchase the album was "When the Funk Starts to Swing", a sweet slice of jazz-funk harkening back to the heyday of CTI records. Once I actually started listening to the album in its entirety a realized that every song on this ablum--save one--is a standout cut and has its own identity. The previously mentioned tune is one of my favorites, along with "Jimmy Leans Back", "Gettin' Into It", and "When the Funk Hits the Fan" (a dance-club take on "When the Funk Starts to Swing").
The one weak spot on this otherwise glorious album is "The Reason", which unimaginatively lays vocals over a sample of Boz Scaggs, "Lowdown." The real gem is that you get to hear a clip of King Britt's "original mix" of "The Reason" just before the "lowdown" version starts. The "original mix" can be found on the Sylk 130 "The Reason" EP. Why they didn't use this far more superior version of the song on the album is beyond me. "The Reason" EP is definitely worth seeking out for this song as well as an extended version of "When the Funk Hits the Fan."
Anyway, this snafu not withstanding, this is still THE last great album in black music for the 1990s.
Make Sure To Get The Unedited Version.......2005-08-10
This seems like a great cd but unfortunately my copy is for kids or something and all the "swearing" is swerved out. It's extremely irritating and keeps me from enjoying the tunes. Very disappointing and it doesn't seem to say that it's the "clean" version anywhere on it.
Funky beats take you back to HS.......2004-06-22
You'll remember chillin' on the stoop of your best friend's house in tenth grade, listening to a boombox straining some musical sounds through the air... even if you never did that.
The tracks Britt (aka Sylk, it's one in the same) creates here are infused with a deep soul. Male vocals and easy rapping stand tall on some tracks, but there are never any hos or bling-bling in this rap.
Female vocals take center stage, and they're a decidedly different feel than the masculine tracks. Very poetic, some deeply sung as if from a smoky jazz club.
This is music for people who grew up in the majority of the US, not a scrubbed-up suburb version or the down-and-dirty ghetto place. There are elements of both those here, with a track like Taggin' and Braggin' obviously talking about committing small crime, in this case graffiti.
However, most of the issues here are overtaken by the groove: buy this album for its flow. Standout tracks include the aforementioned Taggin', the wonderful, true-to-its-roots "DJ Saved My Life" cover, the super-groovy title track, and a wonderfully-sampled The Reason.
Some of the tracks are a little too serious in their poetry, but if you're into that, you'll love it (namely, "A Day in the Life," and "E.R.A"). Break out the beatnik berets and start a-snappin' your fingers.
Overall, however, this album is all about a great groove, and it keeps it going on lots of nicely-crafted tracks. A great discovery for those sick of modern rap and something closer to Tribe and De La Soul, but with not as much of a ghetto, street edge.
A Great Mix Of Urban Grooves.......2000-04-18
This CD was given to me by a person who read some of my CD reviews. I heard the track "When The Funk Hits The Fan" a couple of years ago but never knew who made it. This was a great trade because I'm always in to new underground music and this one is excellent. A touch of acid, funk, and soul cover CD and I'm my ears were blessed by it's sounds. A great CD for collection of good music.

What would you expect from philly, nut'n but the BEST!.......2000-03-23
For years now KIng & Britt have given us locals of phily something to listen to weteher it was back at the old weekly at Sylk (I wounder if thats were the name came from thought doubt it for britt and king had words with one of the owners) or at the monthly at fluid, Either way this is a great album. Also the more diverse the listing background of the producer/DJ the better the Music! and this is an example of that notion. Its amust Buy....

BUY IT!.......2007-05-13
This CD is WELL worth buying, I haven't taken it out of my CD player since receiving it. It's amazing how well the guitars mesh with the keys add powerfull drums and bass lines.
Good, but not like their debut........2004-11-06
Despite Al Pitrelli's long tenure in a second rate hair metal band, some fans of which are regularly able to divine minute details about the band members to a level bordering on ravenous obsession, I didn't hear about this experiment until I spoke with a highschool classmate of Al's. That's pretty far underground, if you ask me, so it was with massive surprise that I found myself watching The Real World on MTV when I heard O'2l used in the soundtrack (they still use it regularly).
Anyhow, that little story is only vaguely related to the music. The ex-classmate that I mentioned above was hyping this group before the debut was even released, though I was highly skeptical because I strongly disliked what Savatage (the band Al was in through the mid 90s before his stint in Megadeth) was doing at the time. Needless to say, I liked O'2l a lot more, or else I wouldn't be typing this.
Jane is an excellent pianist, one of my favorites. Al plays with a freshness and variety he didn't (or wasn't allowed to) explore in a hard rock band. O'2l blend delicate melodies with upbeat funk and jazz, often spread over the top of an addictively catchy electronic beat. O'2l are on a mission to show that any kind of sound can me melded into music, and I think they succeed more completely than the great majority of groups who experiment with sound.
However, I must point out that the album with the cover of squares (both albums are named identically) is inferior to their debut album. The second album is excellent in relation to other groups, no doubt, but it's also a rehash of the debut. There are songs taken directly from it, and others reworked/remixed, with just a handful of new material. The new material was not as good as the old material that was left behind, so I really only listen to the first album. Unfortunately, the first album is in even more limited supply than the second (I was actually able to find the second in a store in San Francisco). So I suppose my recommendation is that if you can get ahold of the first album, do so, otherwise, this album is a nearly worthy substitute. Even if you do buy this album, I would still seek their debut anyway despite the similarities.
Boundary Bending Electronica that Grooves!!!.......2003-08-06
I thought this album was great in its ability to use acoustic instruments such as guitar and piano and blend them so well with some really funky and upbeat electronic beats. NYC/Dublin/NYC,Stolen Beat Box, and Somebody Dance with Lotti are my favorites as they are the most upbeat. The rest of the CD is mostly piano music, beautiful in its simplicity and power to move. I have never come acress a CD with such varied genres that still retains a common thread that hold the tracks together. I would definately recommend this to any music lover. Fans of electronica, piano, and even new age will enjoy this greatly.
Liked it.......2003-07-11
What is most impressive about this album is the way the direction subtly, yet intentionally, changes throughout. With very little vocals, other than those sampled to give an almost percussive effect, the individual songs rely completely upon the melody created (primarily piano and keyboards balanced by occasional guitar and horns), the beats laid down and the mood implied. While these songs can be appreciated on their own, it is within the context of the album that their strength becomes apparent. "Cecily" in particular gives life to the album. This is an album that deserves to be listened to.
"experience the genius ~ Jane Mangini".......2003-06-24
The opening track "NYC/DUBLIN/NYC", will knock your sox off ~ mixed sounds of New York City and a blend of the Celtic. All songs are composed and arranged by Jane Mangini, with Al Pitrelli and Jane performing with a style that is simply intriguing with brilliance thrown in. The marriage of genres is so original ~ from New Age, Jazz, International and alternative rock, very smooth and enjoyable beyond belief.
Must make mention of "AUNT JANE", features the funky blues side of this group, the fingering on the ivories by Jane is unbelievable, just when you think you've heard it all a heavy metal guitar solo surfaces and in comes Jane again answering the beckon call. Another highlight is "DREAM RIVER", once again the guitar blending with percussion and enters our heroine Jane Magnini, nice touch with a distant trumpet. Get ready as "SOMEBODY DANCE WITH LOTTI", make room for some ragtime, latin jazz, funk, hip-hop, down and dirty performance by the artists extraordinaire.
Hats off to Peak, Concord Records and all who brought this album to the forefront. If you're not a fan after listening to this CD, then folks you'd better hang it up...it doesn't get any better than this ~ gotta love it!

Album Description
Acknowledged as an innovator in the electronic music scene, MBM continues to stretch sonic boundaries and influence new generations of sound activists. Past production/remixing projects include Public Enemy, David Bowie, Orbital, Nine Inch Nails, David Byrne, Bush, Depeche Mode, and Tower Of Power. Supporting the group on this release are Blue Series alumni Craig Taborn on keyboards, Bad Plus skinsman Dave King, and Peter Gordon on flute. "Without MBM's groundbreaking amalgams of hip-hop and industrial dance music, modern dance music genres such as big beat and drum and bass wouldn't exist...one of Britain's most inventive practitioners of sampladelic funk"--Alternative Press.

Quite a refreshing thing to hear...
Like next level jazz fusion, picking up where the 70s left off
MBM Keeps Moving The Music.......2006-04-07
This, like all MBM albums, pushes the lines into a new area. It is heavily Jazz influenced. If you do not like Jazz this album is probably not for you. Personally I find it great to put on while working. My personal favorites have to be the Want Ads One and Want Ads Two. Something intriguing about them. One thing I've noticed about being a MBM fan is every album is way different than the other. This is not Storm The Studio or Satyricon or Subliminal Sandwich. MBM keeps reinventing the wheel. Going into this album trying to compare it to the others does this album injustice.
I like MBM's new direction.......2006-01-12
It is a credit to Jack Dangers that he has been able to experiment with so many different styles over his career and still retain a trademark sound that is instantly identifiable as Meat Beat Manifesto, and this album is no different. Here he orchestrates an unexpected collision of jazzy flutes and rhythms with dubby basslines and a smattering of drum'n'bass. In lesser hands the mix would be a regrettable mess, but Dangers is able to make the combination sound effortless, natural, and thoroughly accessible (much more accessible than his recent RUOK and In Dub discs, IMHO.) Everything is grounded in that unmistakable MBM bass and the album flows remarkably smoothly and coherently from track 1 right through to the end, every track being a variation on the same general concept. It is the MBM album I always wished they would make, but never knew I wanted it.
Pleasant Surprise.......2005-07-03
Much as Techno and HipHop have played tugofwar with MBM, that touch of Jazz was always there, lounging on the centerflag.
And It has finally arrived to embrace us all.
"At the Center" is one of the finest 'beginning to end' albums I've heard in some time. Granted, my heart of hearts was holding out hope for another "Actual Sounds and Voices". Yet once we stop looking for the next 'asbestosleadasbestos' or 'acid again' we find a group of sincere artists emanating a constant mellow groove with no need to skip about.
We find something good for professional movers and wallflowers alike, ready to wink back at anyone willing to listen.
If word of the flute's constant presence made you apprehensive, you're not alone. It's hardly my favorite instrument, but after a few weeks of play I can't imagine this work without it. Of course, I'll always want more, and I know they could have worked in more variety, or at least given us more time before having to start it up again.
I know I'll keep it in for house parties, house cleanings, communities and chambers alike.
Btw:
Don't worry about the live show being too mellow, they mix it up and crank it up with the best of them.
Wicked cool!.......2005-06-24
Wow. Let me say that I really dig this album, even though I've only heard the samples from meat beat's web site! I first saw MBM back in... '99 I think... opening for The Prodigy. Liked their stuff, but I guess I didn't pay it much attention being super-stoked to see the prodigy...
Fast forward to 2005. My musical tastes have changed somewhat. Seeing that MBM is coming to my home town next week, I decided to see if they had a recent release (which they do) and try and download some song samples (which I did).
I love it all! Any fan of Thievery Corporation or the Verve Remix albums will really love this MBM album as I do. What the other reviews say are true, jazzy in spots, but real cool beats. I love jazz though.
I think you will enjoy this!

One of his best..........2005-07-13
First, a little about myself. I grew up in Orlando and started sneaking into clubs in 91/92ish. I have heard Icey, Kimball, Cannalte, Sasha, Lawrence, Fortier, AK1200 among others spin in Orlando. Icey on CD is not Icey live. Totally different vibe. I like the Florida breaks and love Progressive and Trance. This CD is probably the best Icey CD out there. The sound is fresh and deviates from normal FL breaks or DnB. So yeah, it may not do it for you if you want that pure sound. Otherwise it combines different genres to produce a CD that is fun to listen to. Definitely worth the dough!
Psilocybin needs to be beaten!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-10-23
Clearing something up --- Breakbeat music originated in the United States and was later revolutionized by artists like DJ Icey. The difference between Icey's version of breaks and Adam Freeland's breaks is like the difference between, for example, Massive Attack and Dieselboy. Music that comes from the southern U.S. (Atlanta, Orlando, Miami, & St. Louis) incorporates a good amount of bass if you didn't already know. More than half of Adam Freelands bass rythms on the ON TOUR CD for example only hit on the 1st and 3rd beat. Freeland is a great DJ and does produce good sounds, but if you were to play one of his mixes versus one of Icey's mixes to a random crowd of electro\breakbeat\techno-music-in-general fans, I would bet more than 9 out of 10 times Icey would get the most favor. I listen to my Icey, Huda Hudia, and Friction&Spice CD's much more than I do my A. Freeland, Rennie Pilgrem, or Uberzone CD's - and I like both genres. My point is, and I know I'm taking a while to get to it, is that you shouldn't write reviews on 2 different Icey CDs just to dis his music and glorify Adam Freeland's because thats clearly all your trying to do. The only electronic CDs that I think I've ever listened to and not picked up some cheesyness are those produced by The Crystal Method, but thats beyond the point. The point is, Psilocybin, that you should do everyone a favor and throw away your keyboard and just use the mouse from now on. This CD, released about the same time as Essential Elements, is a great display of Icey's uncanny ability to rock a set. I can't say that I've seen a wide variety of wellknown DJ's live but then again we are talking about a CD and not a live set. I have been to a few Icey shows that were completely awesome and I've never talked to anyone else that didn't enjoy the same experience.
CAN YOU SAY FUNKY???.......2002-04-22
Well, I have read all the other reviews and am a little dissapointed with the way psilosibin tried to make a case. Icey broke the mold. I have heard all of the Dj's he put in his review live in London. And they pale in comparison live, yes they do have some good cd's and maybe a couple of records but in the long run go with Icey!!! I live in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and have been to London, Maidstone, Paris, Ibiza, Boston, LA, N.O., Brussles, Amsterdam and several other places. You get the idea? I spin mostly D&B and a little breaks. Icey is one of the phattest dj's I have ever seen live period I put him in the top 5. If you like D&B you should check out a few London Dj's. That is where it all started!!
Florida Breaks cheesy????? Are U out of your mind?????.......2002-04-06
I have been living in Florida all my life, but have traveled to Houston, Dallas, Charleston, Omaha, and a slew of other cities in my time. I am a Florida Breaks DJ, so maybe I'm a bit biased. But I still fail to understand how people can listen to the same BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM for 6 hours on end at some of these night establishments. THAT'S CHEESY. Being in the Air Force, I have met many people and transformed them into Florida Breaks fans with the spinning of one set.
Florida Breaks, as a genre, is the most refreshing, energizing, revolutionary movement in the ENTIRE dance music scene. Period.
Diverse Breaks!.......2001-08-09
Icey has delivered quite a different sound with this Mix cd consisting of newer works, the tunes span the range of breaks starting off with some nu-skool flavored tracks that merge into Electro territiory as well as the techy break sound of "Alright" and the housey head nodding groove of "Drive", The mix glides seemless and grows on you with repeated listens. Definetly one to add to the collection.

Perfect for a House Party.......2006-11-20
This is a nice mixture of Hip-Hop and Jazz. It's very up tempo; and except for one track, it is free of the profanity that is common place with rap and hip-hop. It's a fun CD. My favorite track is #9.

good shit.......2004-08-09
I picked this up for free on the side of a road where a thrift store was giving stuff away - yeah, not a good sign, but I also got a hardcover copy of Ken Kesey's Sometimes a Great Notion for free there too, so that should at least say something. Got home, stuck it in the player - and DAMN! Would definitly pay to see them live, they'd get more cash that way anyways. Good stuff.
Good techno, bad name........2003-10-25
The name of this act is misleading. If you like your techno electronic and instrumental this is it. Very few vocals or samples appear, making room for some cool grooves not unlike CRYSTAL METHOD's VEGAS, albeit decidedly different. A nice, tight record that has some shining moments, but makes me wonder about the group's name. NAKED FUNK? Not a great name to present the material, however doesn't take anything away from some good techno.
Not bad, but not great.......2001-08-29
This album is pretty good. It doesn't seem to have whatever it takes / needs to make it a great album. It is missing something. The album has more of a "techno" feel than a "funk" feel, although the two are mixed a bit. I woulnd't reccomend unless you are really into them. I wouldn't by it again, though I will probably listen to it every now and then.
PHAT lounge.......2000-09-06
Welcome to the world of the Phat lounge...where types like Filla Brasillia, Coldcut and, NAKED FUNK play. This album is excellent, not too fast, not exactly too slow, but just right to get you in the mood for an afterhours drink somewhere in a dimly lit, red hued, velvet lounge. The tunes are especially gratifying to listen to, looped music, soundbytes and samples swinging you into a rather settled down mood where a deep conversation can grab foothold. I find the female's Irish/Scottish accent just facinating to listen to in "Evolution Ending." One of my favorites. Buy this album. It's very good, and will swirl you into the right feeling to relax.
Good sound, kinda similair to Crystal Method.......2000-06-08
Definitely worth to buy, althought not all tracks are really good. Smooth slow breakbeat, liquid samples, for me sounds very similair to Crystal Method. Track 9 is a real pearl.
