4 out of 5 stars Good Traditional Japanese music.......2007-07-14

This is one of my favorite Japanese albums. If you're into traditional Japanese music this is a CD that you should have. I lost the one that I originally had and I finally bought another one. I couldn't beat the price and I think that this album is great. This is a must have CD if you're into this kind of music or just enjoy a broad spectrum of music.

4 out of 5 stars Super-relaxing.......2007-03-05

A very good introduction to koto music and a lot less cheesy than the concept would suggest. The first track is by far the best.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Japanese Music Album's I've found.......2006-11-04

Beautiful selection of Japanese music. Very calming and soothing music. Mainly slow, but does include some quicker pieces of music. Great variety of instruments used such as flute, violin and harpsichord. CD also includes recipe for a Japanese dinner. Great background music for a dinner party. If you like the Soundtrack to Memoirs of a Geisha, you'll enjoy this.

2 out of 5 stars Softener for the ears..........2006-08-26

I am not satisfied with this version of traditional Japanese music at all. In my opinion traditional Japanese music is much more impressive and intense when played on original Japanese instruments. The best example is "Sakura, sakura", one of the most famous Japanese songs. When it is played on Koto and Shakuhachi (Japanese flute) instead of transverse flute it has a different feel and much better quality of expression.

The whole CD is like a softener for an audience which might not be used to a non western sound. At the same time it will get a wrong idea about what Japanese music is and will miss its real quality.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Relaxing!.......2005-07-29

A gentle sample of fine, traditional Japanese music at its best. Highly recommended for the novice - "1st timer" - as well as those of more cultured taste. Hauntingly beautiful.

John McGlinn's sprawling, monumental three-CD set is about all the Show Boat any listener could ever ask for. In an obvious labor of love, McGlinn reconstructs the show as it ran on opening night, November 15, 1927, including every song, the original orchestrations, and all underscored dialogue. The most significant restoration is the dark choral number "Mis'ry's Comin' Aroun'," as Show Boat's serious subject matter helped establish its place as the most important turning point in the history of American musical theater. McGlinn also adds an appendix that includes songs cut before opening night and every song subsequently written for the show's many productions, most notably the love duet "I Have the Room Above Her," written for the 1936 film. (The recording is also available in a one-disc reduction called the "Broadway Show Album.")

Rest assured this 221-minute blockbuster is not just dry scholarship; it's also terrific listening, with McGlinn conducting a dynamic London Sinfonietta and a strong cast including Frederica von Stade as Magnolia, Jerry Hadley as Ravenal, Teresa Stratas as the tragic Julie, Bruce Hubbard as the worldly wise Joe, Karla Burns as Queenie, and David Garrison and Paige O'Hara as the comic couple Frank and Ellie. And of course the songs by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II are among the most glorious ever written: "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Make Believe," "Why Do I Love You," "Bill," "You Are Love," and "Life upon the Wicked Stage." Also included are exhaustive production notes, a history of the show, a detailed synopsis, and a libretto. John McGlinn's Show Boat is a staggering achievement and a recording for the ages. --David Horiuchi

The CD is the best American musical ever! The performances by Von Stade,Hadley etc are magnificient!

5 out of 5 stars An American Treasure.......2007-03-03

When PBS showed the 1989 Paper Mill Playhouse production of Showboat, my five year old daughter fell in love with musical theater. To this day we never miss a production of Showboat, West Side Story, Music Man, Oklahoma or the rest of the great American musicals. These 3 discs are the closest you can ever hear to the original in 1927 and the recordings are leaps and bounds above any movie version or revival cast. Listening to Bill or Make Believe you almost want to cry at what Kern and Hammerstein were able to create.

I defy anyone to come up with another Broadway production that has three songs in a row better than Make Believe, Ol' Man River and Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man (West Side Story's Maria, America and Tonight are the best three in a row of a movie musical) and it's a shame that no movie version of Showboat can compare to this version. The first act is full of songs that are as good as any ever sung on a stage and I can't think of another production with a first act that compete against the big 3 plus Cotton Blossom, Where's The Mate For Me, Life On The Wicked Stage, Till Good Luck Comes My Way, Misry's Comin' Aroun', You are Love, Act One finale and Why Do I Love You?. You just don't want to have the music stop.

If you don't like opera you won't like this version. Sung the way Kern and Hammerstein wrote them, you can't help but feel the operatic nature of these songs. Tough noogies because Showboat is above all an opera disguised as a Broadway play and no sweetening should be allowed.

The four leads are all superb, Frederica von Stade as Nola especially. The booklet contains the complete libretto and allows a different way to appreciate the music.

If you buy just one version of Showboat you need this one. If you have other versions of Showboat you need this one. As a matter of fact, anyone with ears to hear needs this version. A true American treasure.

5 out of 5 stars DON'T DESPAIR. IT'S BEEN REISSUED!!!!!.......2006-11-16

One of the great recordings of musical theatre ever. Although it's no longer available on EMI Angel, it was reissued in October, 2006, as an EMI Classic's "Great Recordings of the Century." It's been "Digitially Remastered at Abbey Road Studios from the Original Masters" and "noise-shaped via the Prism SNS system for optimum sound quality." If ART remastering does for this recording what it has done for other EMI Classics in my library, then it should sound superb. However, I understand the booklet is not as detailed as the one in the original 3-disc release.

Thank you, EMI.

I would hope other labels would follow suit and remaster and reissue other examples of classic American musical theater. It would be a pity if our children, grandchildren, and future generations were unable to savor "110 in the Shade" or "Little Mary Sunshine" or . . . . . . . . . (fill in the blanks.)

5 out of 5 stars An American tragedy...........2006-02-06

This is the first of the great American musical plays, and probably remained unchallenged until the mid-1950s when West Side Story appeared. The term "musical comedy" does not apply. The few laugh lines are subsumed by the terrible sense of loss and disaster that work throughout the story. At its core is homelessness, the destruction wrought by racism, bad choices, human weakness, and reconciliation. The cast?--this was one of the few crossover recordings I've ever heard that actually worked. The trio of Jerry Hadley, Frederica von Stade, and Teresa Stratas is a marvel; Stratas in particular seems to have had a patented Dark Cloud that shadowed her. It's perfect for Julie Dozier Laverne. And the late Bruce Hubbard brings a magnificent dignity and voice to Joe--his singing of "Ol' Man River" amy not efface Paul Robeson, but can stand beside it.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!.......2005-08-26

Simply gorgeous! The most unforgetable music and the best voices! An album for all time!

This one-disc reduction of John McGlinn's monumental three-CD version of Show Boat provides 75 minutes of highlights in a package dubbed the "Broadway Show Album." 5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2002-10-03

Let me start off by saying that my first experiences with Show Boat came through the splendid 1951 MGM movie version. Having never seen Show Boat performed live on stage, this CD pretty much brings the live experience home (and note I said 'this' CD; the full 3-disc set would be just short of actually being front row center). The immortal Kern/Hammerstein score is one of my favorites (right up there with My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, Annie Get Your Gun, and Brigadoon) and is definately one of the greatest ever written for the musical theater.

Since Show Boat does not have an official original cast album, I suppose that this one suffices quite well. All original orchestrations are used here and the music is as it was on opening night in 1927. This is the most complete version available (whether you go with the full set or just this disc). The 1946 revival cast album is the oldest 'complete' album and is nice when paired with this disc to give one a sense of how Show Boat sounded in the early days.

I really didn't care much for this CD at first, but after listening to it a couple more times, I like it better and better each time. McGlinn certainly did right by this one! I'm not too familiar with most of the cast (save for Frederica Von Stade and Paige O'Hara), but they're all great. You'd think that this is a recording of a live performance, not just a studio album. Fantastic singing is had thoughout. McGlinn also did a great job with Brigadoon 3 years later, and did he not have a similar effort with Annie Get Your Gun as well?

I still think that the MGM movie version and its soundtrack album are the best but this rendition is definately not bad! Highly recommended. But if you can, pick up a copy of the movie soundtrack or of the 1946 revival album for comparison.

5 out of 5 stars Dream Come True.......2002-08-22

First, "Showboat" is my all time favorite Musical, from the '40's and '50's when my mother took us to the movies every Sunday. I have video tapes of the 1951 MGM version with Howard Keel and Kathyrn Grayson, as well as the earlier movie version. A few years ago, I saw a TV special on the making of the three Disc complete remake of Showboat, true to the original score. I tried to get a cy of it but no local store could help me. Then through the magic of computers and AMAZON.com, I obtained the three disc set plus this single CD, which I treasure. This one is the best, without doubt. Now I have the complete version of songs and music I only vaguely remembered from the TV special. I wish someone would make a movie just like this version so I could have it on DVD. The whole cast and orchestra are awesome, especially Frederica von Stade. I have since bought other CDs of her work. Buy the three disc set if you can afford it, it has a thick booklet with the actual score and dialogue. But if you cannot, buy this CD. This is the ultimate, the prototype Broadway musical.

5 out of 5 stars IT DESERVES 6 STARS.......2001-06-29

I can't thank enough all the people responsable for this terrific revival cast album. Here is a perfect example of how you should do a classic show and maintain the original intentions of the writer and the composer. If they were alive,JEROME KERN and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN would have been proud of the way their masterpiece have survived them.It is impossible to imagine a better version of the show;this is the definitive one. It's funny when you think of it,most people know the songs by heart, yet it seems that we rediscover the show with this version.Suddently ,we are in 1927 and mister ZIEGFELD is scared like hell that he will loose a lot of money with this;but that's strangely the situation in which the modern AMERICAN musical was born.

4 out of 5 stars Show Boat.......2000-09-10

I really like this recording! The voices are really great. I especially liked "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man." I would recommend this CD to everyone who likes the show and musical theatre.

That's her real name and this is her real voice, as fresh and sweet as the darling buds of May--but never cloying or precious. Fittingly, there's a bright, springtime theme running through this record, which includes "It Might as Well Be Spring," "A Fine Spring Morning," and the CD bonus track "They Say It's Spring." And since Ms. Dearie had recently returned from a few years in France in 1956 when she recorded this, her first U.S. album, there are also some chansons in zee language of love: "Comment Allez Vous," "Tout Doucement," and the aforementioned "It Might As Well Be Printemps." The only thing missing is "April in Paris." Dearie accompanies herself on piano, with Ray Brown (bass) and Jo Jones (drums)--and on some tracks a six-voice chorus. If Chet Baker and Betty Boop had a baby, she'd be Blossom Dearie--and this first-rate album catches her in the springtime of her career. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Best Blossom Album.......2007-04-14

Just what I said: best Blossom album. They're all great, but this one has that special sparkle to it that makes you want to listen to it over and over and over again. Her voice hugs these delicious standard and not-so-standard tunes. A true classic jazz vocal album. And do not forget she plays piano too!

    5 out of 5 stars Love with a microphone.......2007-03-15

I hadn't discovered Blossom until the last few years. What a pleasure. One used to be able to fall in love with a sweet voice on a record. The current crop of young chanteuses just don't get it. Say what you want, this gal is for the guys. I think she is still performing. Miss Dearie, please come to Atlanta!

    5 out of 5 stars Originality.......2006-06-30

I came across this cd because of another purchase and was informed that one of the songs from that cd was originally made by Blossom Dearie (Comment Allez-Vous) and I wanted to hear the original version and enjoyed it as well and ended up enjoying the entire cd. Now I'm a big fan.

    5 out of 5 stars I Have Been Hooked Since I Was A Child............2006-03-13

I remember the first time I heard Blossom's voice. It was over 30 years ago, on a Saturday morning. It was love at first note.....She still makes me want to unpack my adjectives. Her voice is like fresh butter on hot bread.....It melts into every nook & cranny and is oh-so-good.

This CD is outstanding. Every song is well crafted and a delight to the senses. If you ike Blossom, this is an excellent addition to your collection. If you are unfamiliar with Blossom, this is a good way to start your collection.

Blossom's Blues alone, is worth the price of this CD.

Give this CD a try, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars The French Connection.......2006-03-03

Blossom Dearie's voice is sweet and clear. But it is her singing in French that is what makes this disk so spectacular. There is no better antidote to the grimy snarl of waiting in city traffic than to close your windows and listen to her jazzy little ditties about guys and gals in love. The band members are jazz greats but the music is understated and provides a perfect setting to showcase her voice. The pictures she conjures up of percolating coffee pots, milkman on the doorstep, cozy bungaloes, birds in spring, and love lost and found will take you back in time to a much simpler world of smoky bistros and maybe a few beatnicks. listen to this with a cup of espresso and a croissant and make believe you left town.

At first listen, you might think of Blossom Dearie as a coy and girlish. But she's much more mature than that. She delivers each song with such detail and meaning that you can't help but listen. She is incredibly honest in her delivery, not hiding behind any preconceptions of what a singer "should" sound like. Blossom is all Blossom, and no pretense. She's also a masterful pianist, making it sound as if she's not working at all. Jazz Masters 51 is an excellent introduction to Blossom Dearie.

I've met Blossom Dearie in NYC. She's a complete sweetheart. She autographed my "Sings Comden and Green" CD (also excellent).

4 out of 5 stars A late in life revelation, a major female vocalist........2005-09-16

Verve Jazz Masters 51, a collection of jazz and popular standards sung by Blossom Dearie accompanying herself on the piano has finally made a major impression on me as an important Jazz vocalist, something on the order of a distaff Mose Allison, without her doing the composing.

I first heard her name from an audiophile friend in the 1970s, when almost all audiophiles were Jazz fans. I was not without some affection for some pop female vocalists such as Barbra Streisand, who I 'discovered' upon the release of her first album. But, this was just after the crest of the great Rock explosion where female vocalist primarily meant Grace Slick, Janice Joplin, Mama Cass, and Sandy Denny.

Also, in the age of 'Jefferson Airplane', 'The Grateful Dead', 'Pink Floyd', and 'Led Zeppelin', one almost had to believe that the name Blossom Dearie was a stage name. But, I have come around to realize that all this was foolishness, and Blossom Dearie is a major and important Jazz vocal performer. The easiest way to appreciate what Blossom Dearie can do with a song is to listen to her rendition of the Gershwin's 'Someone to Watch Over Me'.

For this I'll trade in my library of blues recordings and my three copies of 'Stardust' done by other people to get more such performances.

My only problem with this recording is the same problem I have with most titles in this series. They are too short. A good classical CD can easily top 65 minutes, so I don't see why Verve can't squeeze more than 52 minutes onto this disk.

I have nothing to say to those of you who already know and appreciate Ms. Dearie. To those who come to this review from some of my other reviews, I recommend you give this woman a serious listen!

5 out of 5 stars One of A Kind Vocalist.......2005-04-06

There really is no other female vocalist even close to her. Delightful. Absolutly delightful. Arrangements and phrasing unparalled. You are there with her when she sings.

5 out of 5 stars Best find I've made in years!.......2005-04-03

I had not even heard her name when I picked up this CD a couple weeks ago while browsing in the Jazz section. I'm not a huge jazz fan, but have always enjoyed the occassional Billie Holiday and Ella. With a name like Blossom Dearie, and an endorsement by Dean Martin on a blurb on the CD sleeve, I thought 'what the heck?' What a complete delight this CD is - every song is wonderful. From the very first song, I was mesmorized, delighted and enchanted. My kids, 8 and 10 have come to love it too! Picture my 8 year old daughter walking around signing 'Give him the ooh-la-la!' - sure beats Britney!

      5 out of 5 stars Blossom's just the best.......2006-04-30

I am a second generation Blossom Dearie fan. My mother used to play her albums (yeah, that does date me) while ironing just to make a drearie job fun. I remember her singing her heart out along with this lady with the little girl voice who sings about big girl subjects.

When Ms. Dearie sings "Somewone To Watch Over Me" I want to know that there really is someone to wath over her. She can go from there to the sassy "Always True to You In My Fashion" and to the sweetly sentimental "Once Upon a Summertme" without missing a beat (figuratively) and it works. I haven't heard a Blossom dearie recording that I didn't like, I just like some more than others and this is one of her best.

5 out of 5 stars I bought this cd on a whim not knowing Blossom and I love it!.......2005-11-21

I bought this cd when I went to purchase Ella Fitzgeralds Best of the Songbooks and was intrigued with Blossom Dearie's name (it's her REAL name) and the cd notes about her voice. I recognized several of my favorite romantic standards: 'Our Love Is Here To Stay' and 'Someone To Watch Over Me' which are wonderfully done. Then the hoping to find love just around the corner lyrics of 'I Walk A Little Faster,' the spend our lives together of 'Dance Only With Me' and the humble and lovestruck words of 'It Amazes Me' ("what he sees in me dazzles me, dazes me; nothing much phases me but to see me in his eyes it just amazes me.") The giddy 'They Say It's Spring' or the melancholy 'Once Upon a Summertime' are so sentimental. On the other hand, the whimsical 'I'm Hip,' 'Rhode Island Is Famous For You' ("peaches come from Georgia, lobsters come from Maine, spuds from Idaho, pencils from Pennsylvania, tents from Tentasee, you come from Rhode Island it's famous for you") and 'Blossom's Blues' make for great listening to or singing along with. Blossom has an unusual voice, like a little girl at times, she plays piano and is accompanied by a jazz ensemble on these recordings from the late 1950's. I wouldn't say I'm a lover of jazz vocalists but this cd falls into the martini lounge category. At age 45 I'm listening to so much old music that is far better than the junk played on the popular radio stations these days. Take a sentimental journey and understand every word Blossom Dearie sings on this delightful cd.

5 out of 5 stars Title Is Misleading.......2005-02-01

Blossom Dearie is not really a diva. She's more the Bob Newhart of jazz piano. I mean that in the best way possible.

      5 out of 5 stars Gentle Jazz.......2005-05-14

This collection of Blossom Dearie backed up by Ray Brown and company is simply delightful. It swings. No histrionics. No miserable Mitch Miller influence that derailed so many good female vocalists of the '50's. Just cool head bobbing good groovy music. Combining her "less is more" approach with Ray Brown, Ed Thigpen and Mundell Lowe shows that, once again, Norman Granz knew what he was doing. The rendition of Moonlight Saving Time is one of those tunes by Blossom that really frames the Blossom Touch. Of course, The Doodlin' Song will make a true jazz fan smile. Do not miss this music.

5 out of 5 stars Deceptively Simple, Sweet and Swinging..........2004-08-30

The comparisons to Dave Frishberg make good sense to me... and she's definitely one hip gal (Blossom Dearie was the lady answering King Pleasure in his famous recording of Moody's Mood for Love.) - - What's most amazing is that while lacking both the "operetics" of other aspiring Jazz vocalists and the improvisational venturousness of the bebop singers, she has something "else" which is hard to pinpoint... Cuteness ? Perhaps some, but then again she also has a way of phrasing, telling stories through the music and holding the listeners' attention... as a result, whereas the "cuteness" and "novelty" might wear off with other singers taking this approach, Blossom Dearie's style proves itself itself to have an eternally hip deepness that's easy to miss with just a quick listen and comparison.. in time one realizes beyond "cuteness" better words are "honesty" and "insight" to describe her playing... incidentally her piano playing ain't so bad either... (Check out her swinging solo on If I Were A Bell For Example....) the accompanyment of Eddie Thigpen and Ray Brown definitely doesn't hurt.... Ray Brown's bass solo over Eddie Thigpen's masterful brush drumming on Teach Me Tonight is worth the purchase of this CD 10 times over ! ! ! ...not to mention Mundell Lowe's presence and the ridiculously cute and silly Doop-Doo-De-Doop...

5 out of 5 stars This Blossom will never fade.......2002-11-30

Wonderful, witty and warm. Blossom Dearie is a national treasure and her late 50's - early 60's recordings for Verve make life worth living. There is no one like her in the world. Thank you for The Surrey With the Fringe On Top.

This is second only to 'Give Him the Ooh-la-la' in Blossom's Verve years. Blossom's voice is such a treat, and she really attacks a range of songs in this album. You've never heard Surrey with a Fringe on Top done like this. She adds a wonderful intro onto the beginning of 'Tea for Two'.

The one gripe I have with this album is that the overall tempo is just a touch slow.

      Album Description

Two years after their brilliant pop-psych debut, 1967's We Are Ever So Clean, Blossom Toes unleashed this extraordinary fusion of acid rock and prog, emphasizing how far they'd come since the summer of love. Characterized by complex song structures and memorable guitar solos, and featuring a guest appearance on sitar from U.S. folkie Shawn Philips, the album has gone on to become a major cult favorite. Heavily bootlegged over the years, this is its first official reissue. Produced with the band's full involvement, it comes with seven bonus tracks, encompassing non-LP singles, demos, out-takes and live performances, as well as a full-color 12-page booklet incorporating many rare photographs and a comprehensive band history, as well as an introduction from the band's leader, Brian Godding. Sunbeam. 2007.

Blossom Toes was a band I discovered by accident in a used record store. I bought what turned out to be a bootleg copy of an album that has become a favorite of my since I heard the explosive opening cut, Peace Loving Man. Even the noisy pressing couldn't hide the fact that this is as good a psychedelic hard rock album as anything a major band could have accomplished, especially when compared to Led Zeppelin, Cream or any of the other heavyweights of that era. Progressive song structures, excellent twin guitar interplay, and unpredictability make this album a true classic. "Love Bomb" is possibly my favorite tune, a 7 minute tale of how greed and war affect us all- the lyrics truly are timeless. This album, reissued for the first time since an early 90's Japanese pressing, sounds wonderful due to the excellent remastering and has bonus tracks as well. A very worthwhile purchase for any rock fan looking for a classic rock album that truly delivers on all levels.
