Another Masterpiece!.......2002-10-09
Boom Boom Satellites does it again with their second album "Umbra". If you liked the first album, pull some money together to import this great CD since it looks like a domestic release in the US is never going to happen. From the first track "Sloughin' Blue" BBS sets the stage for the sound of the album. The album starts to flow in a similar way as "Out Loud" with a jazzy number coming up early in the album. Perhaps the only let down on the album is "Your Reality is a Fantasy but you Fantasy is Killing Me" featuring Chuck D. If you like rap music or Chuck D than maybe the track will be your thing, just isn't mine. "Fogbound" is another great song on the album, which was also featured on the Ridge Racer V soundtrack. And Soliloquy is an amazing song, starts out slow and then picks up and gets you moving. While very short, "Panacer" is a great little closer to this amazing album. I highly recommend this audio adventure.
Boom Boom Boom.......2001-10-16
I concur with the previous reviewer, though; Umbra is definitely worth a purchase, especially since no US release date has been set...and given the current state of domestic music labels, it may not GET a US release. Umbra seems to be a continuation of Out Loud, with a bit more emphasis on live instrumentation this time around. Some of the songs do seem to contain the same samples and sounds as their debut; for example, "Ingrained" is very similar to "On the Painted Desert", as far as the beats and strings are concerned....though it's a bit more abstract. My favorite track has to be "Sinker"...very dark and layered...kind of eerie actually. "Sloughin Blue" is straight up awesome...the drum samples kind of remind me of "An Owl" from Out Loud, but the song drives like a madman. The Chuck D song "Your Reality's a Fantasy..." really surprised me. I was expecting a confused-sounding mix of Public Enemy with BBS music, but Chuck's style really complements the Sat's unique big beat soundscapes. The rest of the album follows suit...there are really only 8 full-length songs, and two "segues"...however, what you get is quality, and the album times out at around 60 minutes...so don't worry, this is not a recycled EP. I also recommend picking up the "Pacific State" compilation, which features an exclusive BBS track "Soul Screamer", among other songs by some fine Japanese artists. A great album overall, unfortunately overshadowed by the fact that most in America will COMPLETELY pass this one by, even if it does get the domestic release it so richly deserves.
Top shelf.
If you liked the last one..........2001-04-12
you'll like this one! If you have an expendable 40 bucks to plop down on the import, this CD is worth every penny. If not, be patient for the domestic. Umbra has the same John Coltrane meets Chemical Brothers meets breakbeat meets acid freakout feel as Out Loud. There is more English on the new record, and the lyrics are more decipherable than before. I won't waste your time going from track by track, but the lead single Sloughin' Through is definitely lead single material: catchy, brutal and LOUD! There are also two less than a minute tracks that I wish were about 5 minutes longer. Great fun from my Japanese musical heroes

Wonderful performance.......2007-01-09
This CD is wonderful, an outstanding performance and lovely music (Lasso combines his mastery in flemish poliphony and the new style of polichoral music).
One of the best CD I have ever listened of XVIth century poliphony. Very good election of instruments and singers.
Great introduction to the music of di Lasso.......2005-11-03
I have had this CD for a number of years and it is a favourite of mine.
The Currende Vocal Ensemble and Concerto Palatino are in fine form on this disc and together they present the listener with a very beguiling 'walk through' the motets of Orlando di Lasso.
The cover shows Lassus directing his singers and musicians at the Munich court from a spinet. This recording provides us with evidence of how the human voice and musical instruments "sang together" in music of the 16th century. The cornetts, in particular, sound like unearthly soprano voices.
Please consider this fascinating and beautiful recording.

Familar Strange.......2007-05-22
As reviewer Kitsuki mentions, many of the tracks Mills reworks here were castoffs from other artists -- but oh what a cast of castoffs! Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Michael Brook, David Sylvian, Paul Schütze, Harold Budd, Sussan Deyhim, Roger Eno, Graham Lewis, Hector Zazou, Clodagh Simonds, Thurston Moore and more. With friends like that, their trash is more interesting than most peoples' best efforts.
This release isn't quite as successful as his other one, "Strange Familiar" since it includes a couple vocals and a broader variety of sounds or source materials. It is not as cohesive. There are however many moments to recommend it, not the least of which is a version of Syd Barrett's "Golden Hair."
Just one thing:.......2005-08-05
Most if not all of the famous collaborators listed on Russell Mills albums do not actually 'perform' on them. Mr. Mills askes his clients and friends if they have any unused bits and pieces of sound, melody, texture, beats, etc. and then uses the collected sounds to make a musical collage or bricolage.
This is similar to the technique that he uses in his visual art. I get this information from an interview with Mills, I believe that it is archived on his website:(...)
TOO MANY COOKS..........2000-03-02
I first heard Russell Mills and his composite band, Undark, on a Bella Union Records sampler--the label started by former Cocteau Twin Simon Raymonde. The track Mills included, "Cage of Air," stood out from most of the other tracks on the sampler, so I eagerly awaited the copy of "Pearl & Umbra," Mills' debut CD, I'd ordered from Amazon.com.
On this CD, Mills' band, Undark, is comprised of many different lights in the experimental/independent music pantheon. Brian Eno, David Eno, Hector Zazou and Thurston Moore all contribute instrumental and production skills (or "sculpting," as Mills calls it). Former Cocteau Twin Robin Guthrie is billed as "sonic mandarin," meaning, I guess, that he's second-sculptor-in-command after Mills. Mitsuo Tate, who brought much-needed life to the Cocteaus' final live performances, helps on guitar. David Sylvian contributes a gossamer vocal to "Rooms of the Sixteen Shimmers," one of the better tracks here. Peter Gabriel contributes "muted howls"--so muted, in fact, that it's hard to figure out exactly where Gabriel's distinctive voice is.
There are female vocals, too--sensual and ethereal on "Heaven Dips," and someone who sounds a lot like Annie Lennox (but isn't) on a rather heavy reading of Sid Barrett's "Golden Hair." (I've always preferred Slowdive's haunting version.)
Most of the tracks on "Pearl & Umbra" are instrumental, some better than others. "Causes Cause Causes" moves intriguingly; "Canyon: Split Asunder" is beautifully odd; "A Swoon in Amber" is eerily promising. But for the most part, "Pearl & Umbra" as a whole is a rather emotionless album. Disappointing, considering the number of excellent artists helping...um, sculpt this album. I guess it's a product of too many cooks in the kitchen. Not enough direction, too much tweaking.
I hope Mills will try again. He might have better luck the second time around.

The cover is a bit much: Angela Gheorghiu descending from an airplane in a glamorous 1950s suit suggesting she's the reincarnation of Maria Callas. And in the notes, the fabulous Romanian soprano tells of her jet-setting life and how this international program of songs reflects that. She's not quite as versatile as she would like us to believe, but she's the real thing, singing with a strength of conviction and depth of musical understanding that overrides lapses in style. Many singers would just sail through Poulenc's tuneful Les Chemins de l'amour, for example, but Gheorghiu shows what guts it has. --David Patrick Stearns
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Singing But Possibly Lost Soon.......2005-08-22
This recording contains 25 beautiful works by composers from various regions of the world. Angela Gheorghiu's artistry is excellent. She is not only expressive, but she possesses the ability to demonstrate dynamics without losing control of the breath support. Gheorghiu's ability to crescendo and decrescendo on a given pitch is impressive because her tone stays clear regardless of what she is doing. Respighi's Nebbie is a good example.
Additionally, The short Greek piece shows that Gheorghiu can be rather versitile. Her voice becomes almost one that is not easily recognizable in the lower register. It's almost chest voice singing to me. This is just another of Gheorguiu's amazing abilities.
Her pianist is also excellent. He plays with much sensitivity and is a joy to hear. He has the touch of few gifted accompaniests today.
If you like Gheorghiu, I highly recommend this CD especially since there seem to be only several available copies of the recording out there. I certainly hope that more copies will become available and that this recording will not disappear as some already have in today's market.
A world tour of some fine songs.......2004-12-26
Ms. Gheorghiu undertakes a lot with this CD, some very disparate literature in a passel of different languages. I think she succeeds quite wonderfully. Her Italian, French, and German pronunciation are quite good (and one assumes her Romanian as well). More importantly, she carries off the songs effectively. Schuberts Ständchen is very nice as is Schumann's Du Bist wie eine Blumen. I can't speak much about the Asian songs, some have apparently found fault with her Japanese and Korean pronunciation. I can understand that, but I'm willing to cut her slack on that. The Hadjidakis song is marvelously done. She remarks in the liner notes that it doesn't even sound like her voice, and I concur. Turn up the volume, and at the very end of the song, you can hear her exhale as she finishes. No, not part of the music, but is somehow conveys the sense of melancholy inherent in the song. Sometimes compilations like this don't work, but in my mind, this one certainly does.
Her songs go around the world and to the heart.......2001-06-08
On this 'diva on a world tour' CD, Angela Gheorghiu sings splendidly in a wide variety of styles, from art song to folk song to cabaret song, and even goes slightly into the pop genre, proving that 'crossover' can indeed sound wonderful from a singer of integrity. It doesn't hurt that she has what is probably the most beautiful soprano voice of our time, from a serene, splendid top to a rich and very sexy bottom. Her superb technique is shown by beautiful control of tone and dynamics, especially gorgeous pianissimi. Of course, she is much more than just a `beautiful voice'. Gheorghiu brings the same intensity, total commitment, attention to detail and nuance to her song interpretations as she does to her operatic ones, often with a quietness and introspection that opera usually doesn't require. She not only varies her vocal style, character and even her sound perfectly to each song, she also proves to be an adept linguist, singing 25 songs in 13 (!) languages. While I'm not familiar enough with all the languages to judge her handling of them, anything that Gheorghiu sings in a romance language is wonderful. This includes not only her native Romanian but also French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Ladino (the language of Sephardic Jews, mostly medieval Spanish). She paints words - and entire musical worlds - with the skill of a true artist and rarely fails to touch the heart and soul.
The best track on the disc, without question, is Respighi's 'Nebbie'. Gheorghiu not only brings out all the agony of this character but actually uses her voice to create a frozen landscape of desolation and hopelessness. I also was very taken with her interpretations of two 'arie antiche' that proceeded this - the familiar 'Plaisir D'Amour' sung here in Italian, and a sad, introspective rendition of 'Sei tu m'ami', which makes a nice contrast to Cecilia Bartoli's more outgoing and mischevious version. There is also a wonderful rendition of the famous Sephardic lullaby `Durme kerido hijico'. I always admire a `star' singer who introduces new or obscure repertory for a wider audience to fall in love with, and Gheorghiu does this with 3 hauntingly beautiful Romanian songs. The Greek song is the best of many songs where she gets to display her aforementioned mezzoish lower register - her voice is almost unrecognizable. Other highlights include `Solveig's Song', `Chemins de l'amour', `Oh! Quand je dors', `Je te veux', `Azulao' (where she seems to be conjuring the song up from the depths of the earth) and most appropriately to her own life, the Japanese pop song where she sings about the joys of traveling the long road with her lover beside her. The disc ends with a splendid rendition of 'Be My Love', capping the recital with a spectacular high C and proving once and for all that this song is hardly just tenor-only property.
My only qualm is that while Gheorghiu's renditions of Schubert and Schumann songs are by no means bad, she has a great deal of competition in this repertory and her renditions don't come quite as special as those of others, or of the other songs on this CD. I think `Zueignung' in particular needs a more heroic sound than she gives it here. Also, I was a bit spoiled for 'Guriwoon Geum Gang San' by hearing Hei-Kyung Hong sing it - she actually IS Korean and brings more deep and specific feeling to this song than Gheorghiu can. I'm also slightly disappointed that she does not include any English (as opposed to American) songs, considering how much she loves working in England and how popular she is there.
Malcolm Martineau plays beautifully and is an accompanist of imagination and sensitivity. His affinity with Gheorghiu is shown by the fact that her singing of 'Azulao' was at his suggestion. He seems to becoming a latter day Gerald Moore in the way that he accompanies so many singers so well in such widely varied repertoire and brings out their best, although I do not know if he posssesses Moore's gifts for explaining the music to the audience. I hope he and Gheorghiu work together again, despite the fact that they are now primarily based at different record companies.
The documentation includes an essay by Gheorghiu herself on the songs and how they relate to the joys of her peripatetic existence,as well as full texts and translations. One possible error - I believe they translate a different verse of 'Les Filles du Cadix' than Gheorghiu actually sings. I also like the cover and interior photos of Gheorghiu - they show her as a smart, strong, confident world traveller, not a submissive sex object the way so many other female classical singers appear in their CD booklets. By contrast, the photos of her actually taken at the recording session show her as a complete 'un-diva' in a cartoon character T-shirt.
While I am delighted about the many opera recordings, both complete works and solo recitals, that Gheorghiu plans to make over the next several years, I really hope she commits much, much more song literature to disc. It is certainly the best way for her to develop an artistic identity separate from her equally splendid husband Roberto Alagna (although it doesn't take a genius to figure out who 'Je te veux' and 'Be My Love' are aimed at!). For the sheer variety, depth, and skill of her interpretations, she could become the 21st century's equivalent of Victoria De Los Angeles. The first priority is a disc of Romanian songs, and I hope she also records more material from the surrounding area (Hungary, Czechoslavkia, Greece, etc). Based on her performance of 'Canto Negro', I want her to record the entire Montsalvatge cycle - can you IMAGINE what she could do with 'Ninghe, ninghe'? Perhaps more Sephardic songs? Kurt Weill's French songs? 'Les Nuits D'Ete'? 'Sheherezade'? The list is endless and mind boggling.
Sheer Enchantment.......2000-03-25
I'll be brief. After listening to this CD on and off for nearly a year, I find that the rougher, less interesting moments that came up when I first bought the disk have faded, and that from start to finish I have a new Desert Island Disk to accompany my favorites of years past. Buy it, then give it time to work its magic and for your erotic center to familiarize you to this sexy voice. The same goes just as strongly for Gheorghiu's glorious ARIAS album with Mauceri. This is more quickly taken in but as time passes it is like having Angela's fingers stroking your back. All right, stroking your sympathetic ganglia.
Not bad.......1999-04-23
In this CD, at first I listened to KAWA NO NAGARE NO YOU NI. I'm a Japanese, so I interested in how Angela Gheorghiu singing it. After the song finished, I'm so sorry because she couldn't singing this song so well. I don't know about other song, but as a Japanese, I'm so disappointed. But, this disc's concept is very good.

Customer Reviews:
You call this electronic? BULL!.......2003-01-26
I think I know what electronic classical music is, considering I made an album called Kulture. This does not sound electronic, if it does, it uses drums = not good. It sounds way too classical.

Voices and Trumpets and Bass.......2000-11-17
No. 5 in the 30 Hertz series (named for the Wobble's primary recording studio these days) is a popish mix of world beats, beatiful, clear deep bass lines and some of the most compelling other-worldy vocals I have ever heard....'Il Jevedro Il Oblacno' is a standout as is 'I Offer you Everything', 'Mount Zion' and the beautifully building 'Moon Slowbeat Part I.'
Harry Becket's trumpet is unfortunately only featured on two tracks, and Amila Sulejmanovic gives stunning performances on the opening two tracks.
Late night listening with beats or Saturday afternoon, I've had a lot of trouble keeping this one out of my player for very long at a time....

Rock me to the core!!.......2001-06-16
I need to get soon my german-english dictionary, this band just plain rocks!!!! and the cover of rock me amadeus... one of the coolest songs in the history of rock, and a great tribute to falco (rip).
Umbra et Imago has to be one of the greatest gothic rock outfits in the world.
Chalk another big one up for Umbra!.......2000-12-04
This album is the latest from a band in Germany many in the States have not heard of - let alone - heard! Every time they release a new one, somehow Mozart (lead singer) manages to reinvent them. The basic sound is still familiar, but he takes it, puts it in a blender and what pours out is a mixed culmination of all that has come before and with a new, fresh and often pain-filled twist from their BSDM and vampiric roots. This album was released in two different versions. The general release (US - Halloween, 2000) is reviewed here. The album opens strong with "Intro" in what has become a "signature" of Mozart's - a "speech" (in German) over instrumental music from the band in the background. This always sets the tone. In previous releases, he opened with classical pieces and everything from Nietzsche to historical speeches. Mozart's love of Friedrich Nietzsche appears in many of his lyrics. Used on several previous albums, once again it shows on this one, too. The first musical track - "Lieber Gott" has a strong beat and the special addition of Peter Heppner/Wolfsheim on vocals, it is probably the only "cheery" song on the album. Don't let that "cheeriness" fool you. Umbra is not about being happy or positive. Hard, raw, gloomy, dark, even depressing - it runs the gamut from gothic to S&M to vampires to raw sexual energy and comes from the darkest corners of the human mind. The title track "Mea Culpa" has a harder edge like the band's older material, giving the album a good mix to initiate new listeners to the band's past albums and bringing them up to speed with the present incarnation. Mozart uses his voice to give a harsh edge to the German lyrics and while his voice may sound very hard, he can be incredibly lyrical when required. This switch is evident during "Goth Music" with its lilting sound and, next to Mozart's version of "Rock Me Amadeus", it is my personal favorite on this album. "Teutonenlied" - slow, moody and almost ethereal. A very political song against Fascism with strong verbal chorus lyrics. With the edition of a boy's choir in the background, the song reminds me of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In Wall". "Weinst du?" was released as a single in Germany with the addition of Tanzwut. Once again Mozart adds a new twist to his music with bagpipes in the background. It joins what others have offered previously from animal and insect sounds, radio-theater drama with footsteps, thunder, the sounds of a woman being whipped, to one with Native American drums and singing. The next two cuts are forever linked together historically and represent Mozart's tribute to the late Austrian rock singer, Falco. "1780" and "Rock Me, Amadeus" might be called Umbra's answer to "pop music", but, of course, with their own unique flair. The intro "1780" has been updated to include more on the original Mozart's music career, mention of Falco's recording of the original song, a reference to his untimely demise in a car accident in the Dominican Republic and the present day Mozart's re-mix of this 1980's hit. It is definitely a new classic with a good beat, techno sounds and something most anyone could dance to. I wish my German was better so I could translate some of the lyrics for this review. Unfortunately, it's limited enough that I wouldn't even attempt a translation for that purpose. However, on another note, not knowing German is not a hindrance to enjoying Umbra's music. So don't let that stop you from giving them a listen. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I've been told Umbra's is "Rammstein meets Type O Negative". And yet, their sound is truly unique. If there was a label called "Vampire Industrial" this would be the definitive band.
