This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Straight through, barring one cheesy vocal track, this is a non-stop aural assault of the most sinister and high energy tech house you are ever going to hear. This mix is full of special effects courtesy of their self titled "Decks and Effects" mixing style, with Ivan on turntables and Arnaud on a laptop. I must admit, when I first checked out this CD in my local shop when it first came out, and read the back where it says "always funky, this mix encapsulates the Paris disco underground" I opted not to buy it, thinking it would be too Parisian disco funk for my tastes. I finally decided to pick it up, after hearing a few of Black Strobe's latest tracks in other mixes, and thinking they sounded very techy.

I have to say I am glad I ended up buying this, because it just blew me away. There aren't very many all tech house mixes out there, so this one is perfect. It has dark, fast beats, all the way through. I nearly slammed into a police cruiser taking a corner too fast, while listening to track 17. You have to use extreme caution when playing this one loud in your vehicle!!

The only thing keeping it from being a completely perfect mix is track 6, which is a horrible pop or alternative sounding vocal track, that totally seems out of place. I had to check my CD player for a moment, thinking I had accidentally switched the CD off and went to radio, because it sounds that odd. Then I thought maybe the record company accidentally burned the wrong track 6 onto the Black Strobe CD!

You also get a 24 minute DVD that shows you a quirky look at hidden spots in Paris you wouldn't see in other travel shows. At the end, Black Strobe talk a little about themselves and their history.

This is an incredible adrenaline rush and a super hot tech house mix you simply can't pass up.

Would be 4-stars except for some playback issues. This is more techno/dance oriented than Other Side: New York. I have had some problems playing back on some computers. I tried it on several Macs and Windows PCs. Some systems can play and rip this album fine. Some cannot even mount it. The record label is aware of the problem and has been very responsive to my feedback. Kudos to them for their help!

    Combining Cannonball Adderley's bluesy tone and John Coltrane's passion, alto and soprano saxophonist Stefano di Battista is one of the brightest European jazzmen to emerge from the continent in recent years. He worked with Michel Petrucciani and Elvin Jones and released A Prima Vista, his U.S. debut, on the Blue Note label. On this CD, backed by a quartet, he delivers an impassioned musical tribute to his hometown, Rome. Augmented by the brilliant string arrangements of Vince Mendoza, these sessions are a tasteful blend of Charlie Parker's Charlie Parker with Strings and the romantic strains of Nino Rota's film scores. That cinematic sound is draped on the songs "Amoroso" and "Anastasia." "Romeo and Juliet" is Di Battista's heartfelt take on Franco Zeffirelli's famous motion picture, while "Arabesque" dances with zesty, midtempo rhythms.     This is easily one of the most beautifully performed jazz saxophone CDs I've ever heard. I didn't know of Stefano di Battista but learned through research that this CD was arranged and conducted by Vince Mendoza and that was all I needed to hear. Mendoza only writes two of the tunes here; "Arabesque" and "Amoroso" but it makes no difference. Conducting and arranging is his forte and his influence is obvious over all the other tracks and no disrespect to di Battista (who wrote five other songs) or Nino Rota, who of course wrote the theme to "Romeo and Juliet", this CD is to these ears, all the better for it. di Battista is a great saxophone player and has obviously been influenced by some of the greats from the past as well as his contemporaries. He says as much on his inner sleeve notes. He is a master of improvisation but more than that, it's the emotion he evokes with his intrument that is so worth checking out. There are places where he makes his saxophone wail as if its heart were breaking. It is truly moving stuff.

    A wonderful piece of art from beginning to end. Special props to Eric Legnini for his amazing piano work and to Les Archets de Paris Orchestra, for the mesmerising musical landscape they helped create. Simply beautiful!

    The coming together of ace arranger and conductor Vince Mendoza with rising alto saxman Stephano di Battista here produces a kind of small miracle. It's very difficult to make this kind of session work. The challenge is to retain the rigor of jazz while adding the lush gorgeousness of sumptuous strings. Sloppy, maudlin sentimentality too often results.

    Not here.

    Mendoza brilliantly solves the aural puzzle, and the result is an altogether ravishingly beautiful sonic excursion that displays sufficient jazz sensibilities and rigor to satisfy the most nit-picky critic while at the same time exhibiting sheer aural ravishment.

    Quite an accomplishment, and one hardly ever achieved in the jazz-with-strings arena.

    If there is any analog, it strikes me that Fellini Jazz by Enrico Pieranunzi might be it. Both discs share an aural extravagance seldom encountered in the world of jazz. And both manage to retain enough jazz firmness to avoid the Scylla of sentimentality while also skirting the Charybdis of empty charism.

    The beauty of Italian jazz fully on display. Absolutely worth hearing.

    It must be said this album is really the work of a sublime talent at the top of his game. Symphonic Jazz arrangements for sax are a rarity in this day and age, and really need a special kind of player to bring them to life. Di Battista is very much this kind of player. You can tell from his methodical approach on the album that he has probably had a classical backround, which is not uncommon amongst European players. However the real making of this man is in his versitility. This guy knows his horn like the back of his hand, and he's style in someways is a montage of some of the greats: Parker, Coltrane, Coleman, Cannonball, and even Brecker. But make no mistake, di Battista is a unique player with an orignal sound.

    The album is airy, moody, lush, and sophisticated. The string arrangements are superb, and act as a spacious playground for di Battista to showcase his prodigal talent as one of the premier sax players comming out of Europe. If you are ever is Paris, make sure you check this guy out at the 'Sunrise' and 'Sunset' clubs where I here he is somewhat of a resident.....

    I heard Stefano Di Battista at the Jazz Festival in Eilat last week, and under the adrenaline and excitment of the show, I ran to buy this album. Di Battita was the best show of the Festival- Fast going, Energetic hot jazz, that got the entire audience on their feet. However, you'll not find it in this album. However, I wasn't dissappointed at all. This is a great album, with cool, quiet and calm Jazz. Di Battista's tunes and playing have some special aroma to it, unique to him, that brings to mind a small Cafe in Rome. It is a wonderful album, just close your eyes and let the music take you wherever it desiers, hopefully, it'll be Roma...
