Even Trend-Setters Get The Blues.......2004-07-15
One of Madonna's most underrated songs. Released in 1996 in Europe and Australasia and spent a decent few weeks in the UK charts. This single had very little backing and was released just to fill a time gap between the release of Something To Remember and Evita. There was a compilation of clips put together by MTV and NOT by her records company to "promote" the track even though the video was releases after the single had been around for a while. The song itself is enjoyable especially on those rainy days when you begin to miss people you don't even know. It shows a softer side of a unmistakable trend-setter.
Madonna's Only Really Great Acoustic Song.......2003-07-18
After releasing the smash hit single You'll See, Madonna released Oh Father. The song first featured on Madonna's critically-acclaimed 1989 album Like A Prayer. The song was later re-released almost seven years later in January 1996 and peaked at No.16 in the UK, spending six weeks on the chart after being placed on the ballads collection Something To Remember. Amazon (unfortunately) does not have this single anywhere, so I cannot write a review for it, so it's onto the next song - One More Chance. This acoustic song was released in March 1996, and peaked at No.11 in the UK and spent just four weeks on the chart. Many were still saying Madonna's career was over and done with. Little did they know that two years later she'd be, once again, the biggest superstar in the world.
One More Chance opens beautifully with the gentle strumming of a guitar. It then opens with Madonna singing, "I turned around too late to see the fallen star. I fell asleep and never saw the sun go down. I took your love for granted. Thought luck was always on my side. I turned around too late and you were gone." The guitar and violin then sweep in and Madonna sings the first chorus, "So give me one more chance. Darling if you care for me. Let me win your love. 'Cos you were always there for me. If you care for me. Be there for me." It's a simple chorus, and wonderfully sung by Madonna's brilliant vocals, which were on top form at the time because of her vocal training for Evita. Madonna then starts singing her second verse, "I like to play the Queen of Hearts. I never thought I'd lose. I rolled the dice but never showed my hand. I planned it out so perfectly so you'd never leave a girl like me. I was a fool but now I understand." Madonna then repeats the chorus once more, before her vocals intensify and she sings, "Here is the law of the land. You play with fire and you'll get burned. Here is the lesson I've learnt. That you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone." Madonna then sings the chorus a few more times, before the song dies down and finishes.
I have only seen the video to One More Chance a few times, as it is not a very popular video amongst Madonna fans. I think the video is basically a collection of clips from some of Madonna's recent (at the time) videos such as You'll See, Take A Bow, etc. It's not a very good video, and the idea has been used many times before - Madonna using clips from past videos to make a shoddy new one like with Angel back in 1985. All in all, One More Chance is a wonderful song from Madonna - very low-key and quiet, which makes it unique.
Why?!?.......2002-08-03
Why was this placed on the nearly perfect "Something to Remember"? This track is hardly memorable. It is trite, sappy, and more cliche than the average Celine track. Furthermore, why was this released as a single?
Madonna could've easily replaced this piece of trash with something more worthy, such as "Promise to Try" or "Spanish Eyes." Granted, both are rather old songs, but it would've flowed well with the album.
I guess we can't have it all... *sigh*
one more for the collection.......2002-01-23
this is a definite for any madonna fan, this cd will be a great addition to any cd collection, get it while you can
great.......2001-08-25
One More Chance is an entirely accoustic song, that's why I love it so much, It's Madonna's great voice, accompained by one guitar and a violin, a masterpiece!
