    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2005-10-08

I recently picked up a demo cd of The Upwelling at a rockin' local cd store. I was expecting decent rock but what I got was a swift kick in the pants by an amazing group! I can't really describe them but at times I hear Something Corporate or Guster or at other times I hear Coldplay. It's such a wonderful new group that everybody should listen to!

5 out of 5 stars check this out if you want tobe a part of the next big thing.......2005-03-06

A friend of a friend told me i HAD to listen to The Upwelling, so I did, fully expecting it to suck. Much to my surprise they were incredible. I could describe what they sound like (U2 mixed with coldplay mixed with Pavement) but I'm not sure that would be fair.
i'll just say check them out if you have the time.. you won't be disapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive Rock - Incredible Band.......2004-12-17

I was picking up U2's new one in Virgin and I found the Upwelling album next to "Veritgo". I gave them a whirl on the sound station and the sound just grabbed me. It didn't cost much and about the 7th time through this EP - I was addicted. It's melodic, explosive rock, makes me think of an alternative Peter Gabriel hanging out with Pink Floyd with a twist of U2 edge. The vocals are a little in background and it took me a few more listens to catch all the words but everything just blends together so smoothly!

This is an exciting band, I actually caught them live and they rocked the house. It will be interesting to see what their next release will be like as they had a number crowd pumping songs. It's great to catch a young band with so much talent right before they explode into the mainstream.

5 out of 5 stars CT's best of the 80's.......2006-05-01

My review of this is of the original - without You Talk Too Much and Don't Make Our Love A Crime. Those two songs didn't appear on the original LP and should not appear on the CD. They are terrible, terrible songs.
Having said that, Next Position Please is fantastic. The best of their 80's releases and their second best overall (in my opinion).

    1. I Can't Take It was always a bit soft for me. I appreiciate it more now though. Don't know that it should have been the single though, but who can resist that great Jon Brant bass work.
    2. Borderline is corny but great. A standout track.
    3. I Don't Love Here Anymore is a good track. The weakest track for the first half of the album though (the old side one).
    4. Next Position Please is my pick for the album. It's a great song and is one of my favourite CT tracks.
    5. Younger girls like most of the tracks is quite poppy but has a supreme chorus.
    6. Dancing The Night Away is a cover but I love it. Love the way the verse builds.
    7. You Talk Too Much - skip it.
    8. 3-D is the weakest track on here (apart from the two extras). Bit too 80's sounding.
    9. You Say Jump is also very 80's but I guess that was the decade.
    10. Y.O.Y.O.Y is the single ballard and not a bad one at that.
    11. Won't Take No For An Answer sounds like it's from One On One. Heavier than the rest of the album.
    12. Heaven's Falling is amazing. What an awesome song. The only bad thing is that CT didn't write it.
    13. Invaders of the Heart is a good track. Don't know about the counting though......
    14. Skip it. Can't even be bothered typing the title.

Find it, buy it, love it. The 80's at it's embarrasingly best.

4 out of 5 stars The Perfect Cheap Trick Album - Something for everyone to love - A tribute to the best fourth member they ever had - Jon Brant!.......2005-12-20

Sicne my rating scale only goes to 4 **** stars, and the liberal Amazon.com one goes to five, sorry boys. But I loved this album from the moment I heard it. I bought the cassette first in June
1983 since it had two more songs on it. There is something for everyone here; like Rockin' tunes (I do, usually), then try 'Don't Make Our Love a Crime', or 'Invaders of the Heart', with Jon screaming "People try to put us down"...as an intro.

Like Melodic tunes (I love them - as long as Rob Zander is a-singin''Em!)?, then try I Can't Take It, a great Robin original.
Or Borderline, the best song Cheap Trick ever did, unless you like "If You Want My Love"(, especially with the extra bridge
in it), I Don't Love here anymore is the most underrated here
and the outrageous Next Postions Please ("I want to be the biigest gun in the world, I want to see the t...", you get the idea). There are no bad songs here and Y.O.Y.O.Y is magnificent.
The Todd Rungren overproduced 'Heaven's Falling', which is great Live {The Live in Germany Concert version is solid), with it's
Neo-predictable chorus is a minor drawback and the cover of the
strangely Un-Cheap Trick-ish "Dancing the Night Away" [cover of the 1963 minor hit by The Motors] even somehow works - though Rundgren hated it - it had to be produced by young Ian Taylor,
who assisted Roy Thomas Baker on the vastly (loud)& underrated
1982 gold record One on One (which by the way is the fourth best
song on that record). In 1995, The Cheap Trick Newsletter, printed that Next Position Please and Standing on the Edge both (finally) hit gold. Well deserve, boys. I loved it! The best you ever did. Three of the Tricksters even agree. Guess which three?

4 out of 5 stars great songs with rawness.......2005-07-13

THIS CONTAINS SOME OF THE BEST SONGS AFTER A DISAPOINTING "ALL SHOOK UP", NEW PRODUCER, NEW BASSIST , NEW LIFE. POP IS PRESENT BU A LOT OF GOOD MUSIC : HEAVEN'S FALLING" "INVADERS OF THE HEART" PUT THE TRICK SIGNATURE ON THIS RELEASE. ZANDER RULES, AS ALWAYS AND NIELSEN TEARS IT UP. NEED I SAY MORE ?

5 out of 5 stars The Wizard Strikes Again.......2005-04-04

Had "Heaven's Falling" been the lead single, this record would have returned Cheap Trick to the pop firmament. That's because it's actually a Todd Rundgren record with Robin Zander singing lead, delivering what is probably his greatest vocal performance ever. Pretty much everything else is prime Rundgren: monstrous yet melodic guitar, background choruses that go on for days, and one irresistable hook after another. Pure pop perfection of a type almost never heard these days.

3 out of 5 stars The pleasant early 80's surprise.......2004-04-27

In the liner notes to the box set, Rick mentioned that I Can't Take It was a number one hit down under and advised the American public to wake up. It's a sentiment that I wholly agree with on one hand, but also one that worries me on the other hand. After hitting the top 40 with the Dream Police and Voices from the Dream Police album, the band suddenly found themselves in a top 40 slump that lasted until the Lap Of Luxury vomit-fest. Despite four singles that seemed like sure fire hits in the 1980-83 time period (Everything Works If You Let It, Stop This Game, If You Want My Love, and I Can't Take It,) the band couldn't break a song into the top 40. While this doesn't say much for the musical tastes of the top 40 audience, it isn't really a bad thing considering that the next Cheap Trick song to have a chart impact was The Flame. Given the choice between the bowl-swirling nausea of Lap Of Luxury and Busted, I'll take the early 80's near misses in a heartbeat. Next Position Please and Heaven's Falling are two other songs from this album that have made every compilation I've ever made.

3 out of 5 stars A Near Miss Worth Having.......2003-01-21

I like Chris Coco. He contributed to DJ magazine and his reviews were always something you could count on. He also has a fine ear for more laidback, chillout type music. This album comes very close to being the perfect headphone listening experience or accompaniment for sunsets (or sunrises for that matter!). The album gets off to a great start with "Falling", but the start of "All of My Beautiful Friends" is too much for me (the last parts of the song are actually quite good) and "Hazy Lazy" and "My Sunset" are a little too repetitive for my tastes. The rest of the album is to be highly recommended though. Many ambient tunes "Only Love," "Back to Nature," and "Albatross (pretty guitar work by Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac)" are quite nice. "Lost Angels" and "Gemini" are standout tracks. "1975 E. Sunrise Blvd" is pretty much a purely descriptive title. My favorite is "Revolution" which has the highest BPM on the album. Overall, this is a superb effort and well worth those moments that it is the perfect soundtrack for - sunsets, Sunday mornings, and small parties with close friends.
