5 out of 5 stars Best compilation to get, from a great group which were criminally overlooked in the US.......2007-02-16

I'm American and I didn't like disco when I was growing up, so I missed out on Boney M when they were around. Now that I appreciate disco a lot more today, I've recently discovered this group of West Indian singers led by a German producer, who apparently were big in every part of the world EXCEPT the United States. I'm mystified at the group's lack of success in this country, considering that artists like ABBA, Donna Summer and the Bee Gees scored big on the Billboard Hot 100 and Boney M were just as good as any of them.

There's a zillion so-called "greatest hits" compilations under the Boney M name floating around, many of which are really dubious, so I had a long hard slog figuring out what the best one was (and the Amazon reviews definitely helped!) But if you're like me and have only discovered them recently, this is the CD to get. The one caveat: a previous viewer warns that "Kalimba de Luna" appears in a shortened version on this CD. However, "Kalimba" was one of their very last hits, made in 1984 after the very colorful original member Bobby Farrell was replaced by Reggie Tsiboe. It's very much an '80s synth-pop song, from a group which is best known for their hits from the late-'70s disco era. If you didn't grow up with that song and you're more into Boney M's '70s disco stuff, that song is not a prime example of the group's work.

One last thing. Their producer/svengali, Frank Farian, would go on to inflict the atrocious Milli Vanilli upon the world, so you may see a lot of ill-advised comparisons between the two groups. Don't let that scare you off! Despite having the same producer, it's an insult to Boney M that I even have to put them in the same sentence as Milli Vanilli. Granted, I probably would have disliked Boney M at the time they were around, but Milli Vanilli are every bit as awful in retrospect today as I found them at the time. I guess that just shows how dynamic the late-'70s era was for dance and club music, and how stiff and clunky late-'80s synth pop was in comparison.

4 out of 5 stars A good trip to classical Disco heaven of the 70 `ths........2006-09-05

Before computers, technical blip blop machines, there were bands which took you to disco heaven more or less. Boney M was one of these groups. This collection are troughly solid gold so to speak. It kicks right away with the mega hit Track 1 Rivers of Babylon. The humming choir in the beginning is very effective, and the vocal sings this hit song with a carribean touch on the drums, with guts and glory.
Track 2 Daddy Cool have a male vocal that makes it, yees quite cool to listen too. It`s rytmic and very danceable. A classical disko winner. Track 3 Sunny, is a lighthearted disco gem which shines. Simpel musical story line which spread it`s happy message right into your soul. Oh, yees it`s sunny, that`s for sure. Track 4 Brown Girl in the Ring has a "childish atmosphere" that`s not up to ususal Boney M standard, anyway a good listen. Track 5 Rasputin, has some kind of "russian folk music" atmosphere over it. Atmospheric, With a quite"cool" male vokal to lift it up above avarage. The soundpicture is straight to the point, and "disko effektive". Track 6 Ma, Baker is in the genre of what we can call"gangsta disco".
Criminal effective in other words. Track 7 Hooray,Hoorary It`s a Holi-day, is a more or less in the childish"humming" sing along genre of music. Track 8 Painter Man, is a rock/disko hybrid with some flair of soft heavy metals riffs here and there. Quite ok. Track 9 Belfast has a quite effective vocal, but the musical story line shows not to much creativity. Track 10 No woman No cry, is probably what we can call a hybrid between reaggea and disco, but has not the soul of Bob Marley. Average. Track 11
Mary`s boy child is a religions hymn, in disco land, and they also put in another hymn called Oh my Lord. Not my cup of tea, but if you info that kind of mood it certainly works. Track 12 Gotta go home, is the fast one on the CD. It`s rythmic and effective, but to little variations make it just average. Track 13 Still i`m sad is a lowpoint. This is a major letdown, and in the departement of boredoom. Yees, it`s a sad listen. Track 14 Nightflight to Venus, is the "sci fi spaceship extragavanza" song. It`s an eksperimental melody, but it work`s tremendously good. The drums does it, to keep up the high standard. Track 15 Felicidad, is the "synth blip blopper". It`s ok, but nothing more. Track 16 El Lute has an "Abba" soundpicture over it that helps it tremendously, but fall sometimes flat because of the irritating male vocal. 17. Baby do you wanna bump, is the weird and kitchy one and sounds like it literally.
Track 18. Kalimba de Luna, has a certain melodic touch, and a "popish" hit flair over it. Track 19 Happy Song, it`s not a too happy listen. A child choir, that doesn`t fit in at all. Track 20 is a mega mix of Rivers of Babylon,Sunny, Daddy Cool, Ma Baker, Rasputin. Same thing, with new wrapping, but here you have the hit songs mixed together if you preferer that kind of thing. This is anyway a very
good intro too "classical disco gold" from Boney M.

2 out of 5 stars Still waiting on a complete compilation from Boney M.......2005-09-09

I'm not so happy with this compilation (although I agree with other reviewers that it does have a good coverage of songs). I only bought it because it had "Kalimba de Luna" (a very hard song to find at the time this compilation came out) but to my disappointment they had edited "Ka Limba De Luna" to make it shorter. This is the problem with buying compilation albums, you don't always get the full version of a song and of course the sound quality is never as good as the original album (because they have to "remaster" the songs to make them play at the same volume on the compilation).

    4 out of 5 stars Disco Gold.......2004-07-22

The title "Gold" is very appropriate for this band, which set the stage for much of 1980's electronica, West Indian Euro-folk, techno, and disco.

This music holds up surprisingly well, and some songs sound positively contemporary, even 25 years later.

One of the best Boney M collections out there, better than the more recently released collection, which doesn't have as many songs.

    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Christmas Album.......2001-12-28

I heard Mary's Boy Child on the radio and called the station for the artist name, then I could not find it anywhere in the city...This was the hit of our family's Christmas! It is the only album we played all day and evening and had so much fun singing and dancing to it's catchy music. Anything from line dancing to cha-chas worked and all the grandchildren learned to dance...toooo much fun!

3 out of 5 stars Not the best of...................2004-07-04

I agree with the previous reviewer - if not to the point of a five star rating - that this is the best available, even if it does replace those hits we know with those irritating remixes. The 1995 Euro CD "I Can't Stand The Rain", released on Ariola Express, is the CD to buy. All original recordings, including excellent b-sides such as "Left Me In The Rain". That CD truly is "gold" for fans of the much underrated Precious Wilson. This "Gold" collection is tarnished, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Precious Wilson.......2002-10-26

Despite the admittedly miserable remix of I Can't Stand the Rain and One Way Ticket and the tantalizingly cut-down version of Leave a Light, this CD is today probably the only available evidence of Precious Wilson's unprecedented vocal talent. Her unique voice that makes one listen to the same familiar track over and over again is enough reason to make Eruption Gold a must for every black music lover.

      2 out of 5 stars disappointing..........2002-06-04

This is what you would expect, would be the ultimate cd collection for fans of this memorable disco group... and after shelling out quite a bit to get to get my hands on it, i was very dismayed to find that their two best known hits, "I cant stand the rain" and "one way ticket" weren't presented in their original glory, but as very weak "'94" remixes. This would've been fine, but the original versions were omitted completely! beware...

4 out of 5 stars Proof that Neil can ROCK.......2005-12-24

This is a great live album, easily my favourite of the myriad of live Diamond releases there are out there. Neil really lets loose, and is clearly enjoying himself just as much as his small, but appreciative audience.

There are a couple of weaker moments: 'I could never hit that note' he says, self-deprecatingly after a very flat 'strong' in the opening line of 'Sweet Caroline' and he does struggle throughout that song as well as 'And the Singer Sings His Song', but this scores points with me just the same for documenting a raw and honest live experience.

As for the uptempo tunes - which predominate - he is in fine form from the whoops and screams on "Lordy" to the impassioned sermon on 'Brother Love'. At the end of that tune, as the crowd scream for more, you can't help but join in with them.

      4 out of 5 stars suprising good!.......2005-09-24

Ok, so I remember this record from my childhood, Mom had the vinyl. With Neil about to release a new CD with Rick Rubin, I deceided to seek this out of print CD out.....it was worth it! This is Neil Diamond LIVE with a small band, no strings, no horns and very little (or less cheesy-ness than normal)....its Great! On Lordy and Brother Love's traveling Salvation Show Diamond Literally shreds his voice! its raw and real! Somebody should remaster and reissue this (with bonus material if possible)....this record was released by Neils old label after the success of Hot August Night, and to be honest I like this live record better! Its a raw, young Diamond, not over blown cheese....seek it out!

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2003-10-27

I see people diss this album because the sound isn't "big" enough. If you're looking for the "airbrushed" sound of lush orchestration, multiple percussionists, backup singers, and the huge productions which mark the decline of many great artists, then this album is not for you. Rather, this particular collection recorded live at a club in LA is Neil Diamond stripped down to his rockin' roots; just guitar, bass, drums, and Neil. He rocks your socks off from the beginning of "Lordy" all the way through the closing number, the best version of "Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show" that I've ever heard. I've loved this album since my college roomate introduced me to it in 1995 and still jam my old vinyl version. I implore you to also discover this ablum and find Neil Diamond at the true height of his stage prowess. The between song banter is fantastic as well (eat your heart out, Wil Ferrel.)

4 out of 5 stars very listenable live album.......2002-09-17

I originally bought this album in 1970 and got addicted to it. In retrospect it sounds a bit cheap since it's all guitars without keyboards, horns, or strings, and the audience doesn't sound very large. Therefore power songs like "Holly Holy" and "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" sound thin, but that's compensated by its high energy songs like "Lordy" and "Thank The Lord For The Night Time." Very listenable: I listened to it 3 times in a row after buying it on CD, although that's partly because there are only 10 songs altogether.

4 out of 5 stars Pop Passion at its finest.......2002-01-31

In 2002, it's hard to imagine Neil Diamond sounding this stripped down and soulful, but he does on "Gold" and it is wonderful. This was the late 60's and "LOve on the Rocks" and "Heartlight" were more than a decade away. This cd captures Neil live at the Troubador in L.A. Caught between the Bacharach pop stylings and emerging singer/songwriter Neil seems comfortable, earnest and uncalculating as he rethinks his arrangements for a more intimate (and yes, hipper), venue. THIS is the Neil Diamond who has been covered by the likes of Chris Isaac and Urge Overkill. An intelligent and passionate songwriter and a superb performer. He is clearly having a wonderful time and the versions of the classic tunes here are full of energy. While this is not the masterpiece that Hot August Night is, it is a fascinating counterpoint to the over the top production of that and subsequent albums. The production quality isn't great (ok it's rather poor) but Diamond's small band is tight and Neil himself is splendid. The emotion and energy of this performance surpass Hot August Night. With the orchestra and larger band gone, Gold presents Neil Diamond and his material for the true timeless classics that they are.
