Hard To Find Jukebox Classics 1956 includes eight songs never available on CD till now, including Fess Parker's "Wringle Wrangle" (#12), Dorothy Collins' "My Boy - Flat Top" (#15), and the stereo single version of Morris Stoloff's #1 smash, "Moonglow & Theme from 'Picnic'." Others, like the Cheers' tragicomic "Black Denim Trousers" (featuring Bert Convey) or Tony Bennett's rapturous "Can You Find It In Your Heart " are very difficult - if not impossible - to find on CD these days.

Agree!.......2007-06-18

I agree with previous reviewers, but would like to emphasise that most of these tracks are probably rare. So often oldies compilations mine the same vein, and the same songs reappear over and over again. The vast majority on this comp are new to me, and there is very little overlap with the contents of the Time Life Hit Parade series disk for the same year.

I hope there will be more volumes forthcoming :)

Another gem .......2007-05-15

Once again Eric/Hit Parade records has produced another great CD. As always the sound quality is superb and the liner notes complete. As always there are lots of, as the title says, Hard to Find great songs from the fifties, in this case specifically 1956. While many of the songs are top tens there are a couple of lesser rated gems such as Wringle Wrangle by Fess (Davey Crockett) Parker and My Boy-Flat Top by Dorothy Collins. Highly recommended.

I didn't realize just how much I missed some of these tunes. My Boy Flat Top by Dorothy Collins and Wringle Wrangle by Fess Parker (TV's Davy Crockett) were both boyhood favorites. The sound is as fresh and clean as I've ever heard on 50 year old recordings. You also get Green Door by Jim Lowe and 21 others to help take you down memory lane. Thi CD is a must for those of us on the leading edge of the Baby Boomer generation.

A veritable smorgasbord of hard to find mid-fifties pop favorites.......2007-01-25

Hats off to our friends at Canada's Hit Parade records. They have come up with real winner here!! "Hard to Find Jukebox Classics 1956" features two dozen of the most pleasing pop tunes from that era. And many of these songs are appearing on CD for the very first time! In all cases these are the original hit recordings you would remember from the radio. No disappointing re-recordings on this one! Even though I have been a collector for more than 40 years there were still 7 or 8 songs on this disc that I did not own!! For me, this collection was a real find.
"Hard to Find Jukebox Classics 1956" features hits by some of the premiere vocalists in American popular music. Enjoy once again Vic Damone's splendid recording of "On The Street Where You Live" from "My Fair Lady". That one always sends chills up and down my spine! One of the big hits of 1956 was Bing Crosby's duet with Grace Kelly. "True Love", featured in the motion picture "High Society", went all the way to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of that year. I was also extremely pleased to find a pair of hits by Tony Bennett that have been out-of-print and virtually impossible to find for decades. "Can You Find It In Your Heart" and "From The Candy Store On The Corner To The Chapel On The Hill" were both big sellers that year. If you enjoy that rockabilly sound then Chuck Miller's Top Ten smash "The House of Blue Lights" will certainly float your boat. And fans of group harmony will appreciate tunes like Somethin' Smith and the Redheads recording of "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie" or the Highlights "City Of Angels". For me, perhaps the biggest surprise in this collection was the remarkable Jerry Lewis recording (yes, that Jerry Lewis)of Al Jolson's 1918 hit "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody". I cannot imagine that Lewis was much of a singer, but his voice proved to be perfect for that song. While I have always been aware that this tune hit the Top Ten back in '56 I had never heard the song before nor had I ever seen the 45 rpm record.
I could go on and on but suffice to say that if this is your kind of music then you should grab this one immediately. It has been my experience that collections like this tend to have a fairly short shelf life so if you procrastinate you may miss out. "Hard to Find Jukebox Classics 1956" features a very informative 12 page booklet featuring photos and biographical information on many of these artists. Simply stated, this disc is a joy to listen to. Very highly recommended!!!

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Lots of lost 45's (and maybe even 78's) in this terrific new collection from Canada's Hit Parade records.......2007-01-26

If you are over the age of 60 I am sure you would remember most of them. As far as I know the vast majority of these tunes have been out of print for decades. In 2006, Hit Parade records based in Ontario, Canada released this marvelous collection entitled "Fabulous 50's Divas Sing Their Hard To Find Hits". For collectors this is a virtual treasure trove of classic 1950's pop tunes. And even though I have been collecting for more than 40 years now there were around ten songs I had never even heard before. I had an awful lot of fun just sampling many of these tunes for the very first time.
Now there certainly are some mighty big hits among the nearly two dozen tunes that appear on this disc. Perhaps my favorite is Patti Page's 1954 #2 smash "Cross Over The Bridge". I doubt that Sarah Vaughn was capable of making a bad record. You will find two of her memorable hits on this disc including her rendition of "Mr. Wonderful" as well as the flirtatious "Make Yourself Comfortable" that also made the Top Ten in 1954. And of course the great Teresa Brewer had any number of big hits in those days. You will find both "Let Me Go, Lover" and "A Tear Fell" included as well.
As I mentioned earlier, "Fabulous 50's Divas Sing Their Hard To Find Hits" also includes about a dozen songs that had virtually disappeared years ago and were impossible to find anywhere at any price. Among these is the original version of "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" which was a #5 hit for one Karen Chandler on the old Coral label back in 1952. And then there is Jaye P. Morgan's "The Longest Walk" from 1955. Somewhere in the deep recesses of my mind I remember hearing that one when I was a kid but I had not heard this song for over 40 years! You will also find hits by great female vocalists like June Valli, Rosemary Clooney and Gogi Grant and many others. And in the category of "hidden gems" I would recommend to you track 21 "Blue Star(The "Medic" Theme)" by Felicia Sanders, a cabaret singer I had never even heard of. That one just might be the best song in the entire collection. "Fabulous 50's Divas Sing Their Hard To Find Hits" concludes with the legendary British songstress Vera Lynn belting out her 1953 hit version of the great World War II classic "We'll Meet Again". It doesn't get much better than that!
For those who might be concerned that these might be cheap re-recordings let me assure you that these are all the original hit versions you would remember from the radio. Also included is a neat 8 page booklet with information on all of these fine ladies as well as the Billboard chart information on each and every one of these tunes. "Fabulous 50's Divas Sing Their Hard To Find Hits' was a great addition to my collection. I eagerly look forward to more releases from this label. If you love this music, it would be a great addition to your library as well. Highly recommended.

Another gem from the people at Eric Records, home of the Hard to Find series. As with the Crooners CD this one has excellent sound quality; better than the compliation and individual artist CD's that I already own.
A great selection of arists and songs with mostly big hits from the 50-55 era including two songs that I have never before found on any CD - "If I Give My Heart to You" by Denise Lor and "I Understand" by June Valli.
Being a child of the 50's and 60's and being around to witness the birth of Rock 'n' Roll, I have always been a collector of the Rock music of the era. However, I have now found a new appreciation for the early 50's music of my parents and it's great to have series such as these to help me relive the old songs.
There are still lots of songs out there that are not available on CD so I hope that this series will continue.

In the days immediately preceding the dawn of rock and roll the great vocalists ruled the airwaves. Female artists like Rosemary Clooney, Patti Page, Dinah Shore and Sarah Vaughn were making memorable records in those years. And there was certainly no dearth of talented male vocalists during that era. Canada's Hit Parade records has released a splendid collection of nearly two dozen of the tunes by the best male vocalists of the early to mid 1950's. "Fabulous Fifties Crooners Sing Their Hard To Find Hits" features big hits by legendary singers like Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., Billy Eckstine and Perry Como to name but a few. In addition, you will find a number of hit records by lesser known artists that have been long out of print and virtually impossible to find anywhere. If you are into the that classic pop sound then this disc is certainly for you.
"Fabulous Fifties Crooners Sing Their Hard To Find Hits" kicks off with the legendary Sammy Davis Jr. belting out his fabulous rendition of "Something's Gotta Give". And who will ever forget the vocal genius of the late, great Nat King Cole? Enjoy once again a pair of his best loved tunes with "A Blossom Fell" from early 1955 and "Somewhere Along The Way" from the summer of '52. One of my personal favorites from this era has to be Billy Eckstine's moving "I Apologize". In addition you will find a pair of hits from one of the most popular and prolific artists of that decade, Eddie Fisher. Both "Turn Back The Hands of Time" and "Wish You Were Here" were huge hits in the early 1950's. And I also enjoyed hearing Perry Como's extremely hard to find recording of "Wanted". What a great song!
But for me, what makes "Fabulous Fifties Crooners Sing Their Hard To Find Hits" so interesting and so much fun is the opportunity to sample so many of the songs that have simply been unavailable for decades. Remember Rex Allen? To millions of Americans, Rex was the familiar voice of many of the Walt Disney television shows. Rex Allen also made some terrific records as evidenced by his version of "Crying In The Chapel" from 1953.
Snooky Lanson was the star of the popular television show "Your Hit Parade" during these years. It was great to hear his version of "It's Almost Tomorrow" which is also included here. Also included in this collection are tunes by Don Cornell, Rusty Draper, Tony Martin and Al Martino. Without a doubt, my very favorite song on this disc has to be the great Al Hibbler's recording of "He" from 1955. Although the McGuire Sisters and the Righteous Brothers released pretty fair versions of this tune, neither can hold a candle to Al Hibbler's version. I actually prefer this song to "Unchained Melody", the tune he is best known for.
So there you have it....another terrific release from Hit Parade records!
"Fabulous Fifties Crooners Sing Their Hard To Find Hits" is a real keeper.
Whether you are a collector or someone who simply enjoys this type of music you should snap this one up right away. You will find an informative eight page booklet with information on the artists and chart data on each of the songs. The remastering job is first rate and each and every song is the original hit recording. I look forward with great anticipation to future releases from Hit Parade records. Highly recommended!

I was a bit hesitant to order this CD from an unknown Canadian source even though it was featured on a trusted site - Eric Records, home of the Hard to Find series.
After listening to this CD I was wrong to be hesitant, this is a great CD! The sound quality is terrific especially considering that the oldest recording dates back to 1951. I noted that the Producers, Bill Buster, Tom Daly, and Mark Mathews were the same people responsible for the Hard to Find series; that explains the excellent sound quality.
Although most, if not all, of the selections are available on other compliations or individual artist CD's, the sound quality on this CD is better than or equal to the sound quality of those CD's.
A highly enjoyable CD and recommended, not just for the older guys like me who grew up with these tunes, but for anyone who enjoys good music.
Keep them coming!

Victor Young was one of the most brilliant film composers that ever lived and also was one of the most ignored ones.Mike Todd's "Around the World in 80 Days"(1956) is his masterpiece and its brilliancy is reflected in how Young integrated in his underscoring authentic music frome the different countries the main characters (David Niven and Cantinflas) of the film visited on its trip.
This soundtrack is "a must" for collectors. Highly recommended.

...why wouldn't you want More score than has ever been available before. The score is like a pleasant old friend for me. Every year or so, I wonder why I have this CD until I put it in and listen to it a few times through. I then smile and put it away for a while. To have an Expanded Version of the score is a pure joy.

I have been waiting for years for this fantastic soundtrack to become available on CD. There was a used copy for $80.00 available, but I was wise and waited. I personally believe that this is one of the most beautiful film scores ever written. The composer, Victor Young, unfortunately died very shortly after the release of the motion picture in 1956. His score, however, lives on. Listening to it gives me the feeling that I have travelled to these many exotic countries, and the wild west selections also provide the illusion that one is back in the romantic and rough era of the golden West. I could not have been more excited and thrilled when this entire soundtrack was released with additional score selections not previously available! It is a top ten addition to my collection of outstanding motion picture scores!!!!
