5 out of 5 stars South Beach like it should be !!!!.......2002-05-27

This cd has all the qualities of one of the greatest proggresive house albums of all time. To know David " the machine " Padilla, is to here him live. Knwon to only a few, he has been in the scene for a long time, and has played alongside to the best dj's in the world, PVD,Oakie,Digweed, etc.. This cd recreates on of his monumental live sets, but on a mix cd. This is a most have, especially with "U.B.I's Free to ride", that song brings the house down all the time.
A Must have for anyone whop trully appreciates Prog. House at it's very best, plus, your getting all of the SoBe vibe along with it, It's hot, sweaty anthems, are what clubbing is allabout, good tunes, awesome people, . plus you should feel lucky because in most of the clubs that Dave spins in, you have to look the part to come inside....

My CDs get mentally if not physically categorized according to use/mood--"morning on way to work," "workout," "washing dishes." South Beach Experience will get placed squarely in the "Saturday night, getting ready to party" section of my collection.

From the first beat of "More and More" (don't you love the zrrt-zrrt-zrrt hook?), this CD takes off like a rocket and never stops. Padilla gives the listener only spare seconds of rest in his mix, allowing quiet portions of songs (not entire songs) for breathers, then moving right back into slamming, soaring, and/or epic trancers. His including the best mix of the pop-y "Tell Me Why" (not coincidentally the one with the least vocals) on the same disk as the darkly subversive "R.I.P." -- without begging a "huh?" -- is a great credit. Aside from including the beaten-to-death "Zombie Nation," there isn't a tune on here that doesn't get me jumping.

The only item that keeps this a star short of five is the uninspired mixing. It's basically "song-drumroll-whoosh-next song". The mix between song 12 and 13 made me wonder if he had forgotten all controls on the mixer except the fader, as those two sludge into each other noticably.

But it's all about what you expect, and what you want out of it. This is a party disc, no two ways about it. Crank it up and let it lift you off the floor.

3 out of 5 stars Some Amazing Tunes, Yet A Poor Performance Overall.......2001-06-03

There are some great songs on this album, but it just doesn't cut it. The aspect I liked about this mix was that I fell in love with tunes I've never heard before. It was nice to hear original, high quality material in a world where trance has gone global, and commercial. But, many songs seemed out of place; without any purpose. The emotional appeal to this album was too peaks and valleys for my taste. Had Padilla kept up the mood and found better flowing songs, the album would have been a sound investment.

This CD is incredible. Worth every penny.

2 out of 5 stars I miss The Mix........2000-10-29

When I bought this record, I thought it would be the follow-up to the CD by The Mix, it's not. It starts and ends with a few hits and is pretty clueless in between. The Mix has closed its doors recently and the music scene in Miami Beach is not the same for it. The good news is that I heard from the horse's mouth that they are re-opening in Miami downtown and may even go to New York too, and that early next year finally the new CD will come out. Until then I'll listen to the old one, because David's CD just doesn't cut it.
