5 out of 5 stars Exciting addition to the U.K. catalog.......2006-01-10

Similar to other "Concert Classics" recordings near the end of the 1970's, this one starts out with some mix problems on the first track, that are soon fixed for the rest of the cd. This should in no way deter you from purchasing this cd; it's VERY enjoyable.

This is the only place where you'll find a legal recording of all four original members of U.K. live in concert, and they sound just superb. The best thing about it is being able to hear three songs (with slightly different arrangements) from the yet-to-be-recorded "Danger Money" album being performed live with Bruford's drumming, and Holdsworth's guitar touches - neither performer was still with the band when that studio album was recorded, so this is special stuff.

You know how a lot of prog acts tend to sound derivative of other prog acts? Well, U.K. ain't one of 'em! With Wetton's strong, rich voice (and melodic bass guitar), Jobson's frenetic keys and violin, the one-of-a-kind sound of Holdsworth's guitar, and Bruford's unique jazz-rock drumming style, this band was an authentic original, forging new and beautiful music in the progressive/jazz fusion genre.

A true supergoup from the 70's that lived up to its expectations, U.K. unfortunately had only a very small catalogue of recorded material (non-bootleg, that is). So a gem like this is hard to pass up. If you can find it, be sure to snatch it up! ESSENTIAL album from one of the greatest progressive rock bands of all time.

I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 8.6/10; Performance = 9.5/10; Production = 8/10; CD length = 9/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 8.8 ("4-1/2 stars")

4 out of 5 stars Great historic value for Bruford/UK/Wetton fans.......1999-08-20

THis is my humble opinion after hearing the live UK CD

1. This recording finally reveals to me the disintegration between the Holdsworth/Bruford versus the Wetton/Jobson camps. It is clearly indicated that Bruford wanted to maintain the high 'Crimson' spontaneity and free-form spirit, while on the other hand Jobson sticks closely to the studio arrangements. The same goes for Holdsworth. 'In The Dead Of Night' is clearly a disaster.

2. Interesting blueprints of 'The Only Thing She Needs' and 'Carrying No Cross'. I wonder how much influence Bruford gave to Bozzio to finalize the grooves. 'Carrying No Cross' showed how the basic song was intended to be (song-dramatic instrumental-song). Many parts seems to turn out to be blueprints for Bruford's 'Sahara Of Snow' and 'Five G'.

3. This live recording offers much more 'raw flesh' compared to the sterile Night After Night (which I personally suspect of containing studio keyboard overdubs).

The official announcement recently is that Eddie Jobson requested Renaissance Records to halt this CD's production (due legal disputes between U.K. members and EG Records who sold this tape to Renaissance). However, be lucky if you still can get a copy of it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Addition for U.K. Fans.......1999-07-05

I agree with previous reviewer on sound quality - once you get past "Time to Kill", the rest sounds great and is mixed well. Great instrumental performances throughout! Jobson and Holdsworth are not in limelight (much) anymore, but their talents are well-represented here. But it's the "group" performance, arrangements, and inter-play that makes this an outstanding recording (and there's enough variation from the studio originals to keep it interesting).

4 out of 5 stars Reconsidering the rating........1999-06-16

I stand by my prior comments, however, the 5 star rating is not appropriate considering the recording and comments.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Performance but Mediocre Recording.......1999-05-13

I just received this. The performances are excellent, however, the sound quality does leave a little to be desired. The notes also are WRONG, the neglect of "The Only Things She Needs", which is the third song on the disc, and the incorrect times of "Alaska" and "Time To Kill" also cries out for Renaissance Records to hire a proofreader. I also feel that the crowd is too noisy at the beginning (damn American audiences and their hooting) and it sounds as if the sound board was not properly checked at the beginning of the set. For example, Wetton's vocals are mixed down at the beginning of "Time To Kill". There also is a noticeable tape hiss during the first songs. The quality picks up noticeably during "Carrying No Cross" and I can't make those same points in the later songs, particularly "In The Dead Of Night". I really liked "Caesar Palace Blues", with the guitar - violin interplay. All in all, a very good representation of a too short-lived band.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Two-Fer From A Great Texas Rock Band.......2007-03-02

AMERICAN EXCE$$/ON A ROLL is yet another great two-fer from Texas rock band Point Blank and its pro-law-enforcement leader, guitarist Rusty Burns. Bubba Keith has replaced John O'Daniel on vocals, giving the band a slightly more commercial sound and style, but this set is still great. Now if only AIRPLAY and THE HARD WAY would be properly reissued.

5 out of 5 stars Like a Pop/Rock 2fer Blast from the Past!.......2007-01-21

Recently while traveling out of town I heard the song Nicole on the radio. How cool! I hadn't heard it in years and couldn't remember who it was by. It sorta stuck in my mind so I did the research and discovered Point Blank CD's on Amazon. I didn't really understand initially but this turns out to be two albums combined on one disc. I didn't remember until it arrived but "On A Roll" is an album I'd bought clear back in 1980 that had some great music on it too!

5 out of 5 stars Southern Rock At It's Best!.......2006-02-19

I've had "Airplay" on vinyl for years and love it. I ran across this double cd and thought I'd check it out and WOW! This is a great two-on-one cd. I love every song here. Great guitars...great keyboards...great vocals! Point Blank is an extremely overlooked old rock band. Sadly, they just don't make em like this anymore. This is one of the best cd purchases I've made in recent months. Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Includes AOR hit "Nicole".......2004-12-14

TWO ALBUMS ON ONE CD.
***"American Exce$$" was Point Blank's big moment and included included a sizable AOR hit Nicole - you'll remember the very memorable driving rhythm. The album has great production for the era and another minor radio song, Let Me Stay With You Tonight. Extra points for awsome album art.
***"On a Roll" also featured two minor AOR radio tracks, Great White Line and the title track. Though, perhaps more memorable, is the introspective deep cut, Gone Hollywood - Just as American Exce$$ had awsome artwork, On A Roll has one of the wost covers of the 80s.
FYI - AOR stands for Album Oriented Rock, a very sucsessful FM radio format in the late 70s and early 80s. ...Post disco, pre Madona. Quite a lot of these stations evolved into Classic Rock stations as the format died in the late 80s and early 90s. Point Blank is one of the many bands that were sucsessful in the AOR era, but were excluded from most classic rock programing.

Noise Reduction was poorly applied to this remastering job. Wait for another release hopefully from original master tapes and supervised by any band member.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Pleased with this CD!.......2007-01-22

If you're looking for either of the group's Playboy albums, don't let the negative reviews scare you away from buying this CD. I don't know what disc some of these reviewers were listening to, but based on their negative comments, I delayed buying this for several months. I finally took a chance on it and I am totally pleased. The disc sounds great, as far as I'm concerned, and I received it within a week or less of placing my order. I saw Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds perform at Cameron University back in the mid-70s and I have the original LPs on vinyl and wanted them on CD. Thanks Renaissance Records for finally releasing these two exceptional H, JF & R albums on one disc!

5 out of 5 stars A childhood memory.......2007-01-10

I ordered the album because at age 7 I recieved the original vinal album from Danny Hamilton himself. He is my Mothers Cousin and was in town the year it went gold and sang "Fallin in Love" to me at a family gathering. After he had gotten home he sent me the album. I wanted his music in CD form. Though I did notice on the bio they wrote it said he died of a stroke, that is not true he died of cushings desease.
He was a very nice man and we all miss him.

I heard a small portion of it and I found it to be a great CD. We bought it for a friend to use on his WEB Site.

1 out of 5 stars Billboard 1975..........2006-05-07

Looking for a remastered version of the song "Fallin' In Love?" pull up Billboard top 10 1975 if you haven't already. I'm not that familiar with this band, but I am a fan of Blue-Eyed Soul and Hall & Oates. These guys kinda fall into that catagory. This paticular song was sampled by Sam Sever back in 1990 and was a dope track called, "Room To Breathe." I had been trying to crate-dig this sample for years, but I didn't know who to look for 'till now. On an oldies station out here, they play "Don't pull your love out..." same band, wow! I gave this CD 1 star without listening to it because I had an Ohio Players CD "remastered" from a vinyl record by this same so-called label, Renassaince! (Or however you spell it...) I already know my reaction... but anybody who wants to hear the REAL remaster, find out the Playboy Records' head label of the original (I believe it was CBS/Epic back then) and hit 'em up real heavy for a legit version of these albums (or hope for Japanese imports or something...) Good luck.

3 out of 5 stars Not too shabby.......2006-04-10

One interesting thing about this album is that Tycoon member Mark Rivera later went on to play a prominent role in Billy Joel's band as the sax player. "Such a Woman" is the star of this album, but I also liked "Out in the Cold" and "Drunken Sailor".

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-05-28

I bought this CD because I know one of the guys in the band. People in an internet discussion group I belong to described it as a kind of poor man's Foreigner or Palbo Cruise (as if the poor man didn't already have Foreigner and Pablo Cruise!). The playing and singing is perfectly fine, but most of the songs just zipped past me without leaving any impression at all.

The reason I'm posting this review, however, is to point out the fact that the single disc I received from the Marketplace listing did not include all the songs from the original two disc set. I can't say I was crushed emotionally by this, but let the buyer beware.

5 out of 5 stars Top-notch 70's power pop!.......1999-09-24

Let's face it, the main reason to buy this CD set is the song, "Such A Woman." I have looked for this title on CD since CD's came out, and only recently was finally able to find it. "Such A Woman" is clean, tight, power pop/rock at its finest. The recording is high quality and the mastering is flawless. The clip available on amazon.com is not indicative of the power of the song, however. It is a romantic, desperate, cry for a good woman. If you like Toto's "Hold The Line," this song is in a similar vein in terms of guitars and harmonies. The rest of the music on the 2 (!) CD's, while very good, do not match the emotional impact of "Such A Woman." Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great cd.......2006-11-10

This is a classic Renaissance cd. Was surprised to find it at such a cheap price - until I received it and realised it wasn't both cd's to the 2 cd set. I should have read the description inside the item. Maybe this could've been written in the summary.

5 out of 5 stars On par with any of Seaman's UK releases ..........2004-09-30

An excellent single CD mix album from Dave Seaman that is on par with any of his previous Renaissance or Global Underground releases. Track highlights include Hybrid's remix of BT's "Godspeed", Brother Brown's beautiful "Under The Water", Highland's "Forsaken", Timo Maas & Ian Wilkie's "Twin Town", and of course Albion's (aka Ferry Corsten's) superb remix of Libra/Taylor's "Calling Your Name". The easy highlight of the whole album though, is Orkidea's amazing "Unity". The song merges older electronic classics like "Papua New Guinea" with a late 90's progressive trance edge. And of course, aside from the excellent track selection, the arrangement and mixing is of Renaissance standard, meaning: flawless. All in all, you have a superb mix worthy of sitting along side any of Dave's UK releases.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Mix (B+).......2004-07-01

Not overdone, overtop, or a waste of time. Seaman provides me with tastefullness. There is great mixing going on, and a good amount of complexity that he skills. This disc is for some reason always refreshing whenever I pull it out. It's progressive and yet sullen enough that you and the music can fade into the background. Theres a great blend of energy here, which makes this one of Seaman's better mixes. I bought this shortly after it released, and even with myself i've undercredited it. It's a solid add to your collection of trance/progression.

5 out of 5 stars This disk turned me onto loop based music.......2004-06-22

I got this when it came out, on a whim, and i still listen to this mix all the time. DS's spinning is very interesting...he uses some interesting layering techniques for some of the mixes that really show his skill. Still my favorite Renaissance disc...though R Presents: ian ossia and the robert miles disc on R. London are great too.

4 out of 5 stars Great Mix!!.......2003-12-29

I'm starting to think....the older the better. I bought this CD when it came out and never get tired of listening to it. I pull it out every now and again and always enjoy Dave's Mix. The mix opens with a mellow couple of tracks and then starts building.....building.....until the mind blower by Laguna Seca -"The Flow" and "Twin Town" by Ian Wilkie Vs Timo Maas. The mix continues pumping and eventually starts coming down with Orkidea "Unity" and to finish it off, a great vocal track by Anomaly.
This is for all who love Trance and even prog. house/tech house fans will enjoy this.
Turn the lights low, make some space in the lounge, crank up the stereo and party on!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A rare find........2006-05-04

I like Art In America. Sure, it's not "real" prog, but a prog inspired pop. In a sense, Art in America parallels ELO or maybe KLAATU. It's actually a rare thing to find a group that does pop music this way. It's a shame they only put out one album. Most groups put out at the least, two records. Art in America is unique in making Harp as a main instrument in a pop rock band. This gives them a unique sound. If you like the Buggles and were not totally turned off by 90125, then give Art In America a try.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2005-10-19

Despite having been backed enough to hire a great producer/engineer and two top session players to cover up the group's poor musicianship and give them a sound they would not otherwise be able to create on their own, this very 80's wannabee prog/rock record still falls flat. The lyrics are horrendous at best....though there are some hooky melodies at times. Overall it presents as a self absorbed attempt at Xeroxing truly talented bands of the era but ends up being trite and disingenuous.

Loved the first and only lp. Met this band in the 80's and got to know Dan pretty well. Actually, they were looking for a keyboard player for their next lp and I was being considered!! Alas the band broke up, leaving us one great lp of prog music Detroit style. Ranks up there with Yes [same producer from early days], Strawbs , Camel etc. Hope you come out with something again guys! You were great at the WIDER Kite Festival!

If you are into soft easy-listening music this album is a good choice. I recomend it highly.

3 out of 5 stars Hey Bruce, You'd Better Start Sueing Away ..........2006-06-16

I bought a seventies collection of hits for the sole purpose of acquiring "Moonlight Feels Right",(sorry, can't give more specifics). It said on the cover, "New recordings by original artists." I can tell by listening to the sample here that we're talking about the same version, (heavy clavinet sound). It seems to be the only version available anymore. I gave it three stars because compared with other "new recordings", it's not bad. But if you don't get a handle on it, might down down in history as "original recording by original artists"!

The company that put this out is now bankrupt so we can't pursue them legally. However, another bogus CD "The Very Best Of Starbuck" is now out containing the same tracks. We will shut them down shortly.

3 out of 5 stars Starbuck: Not a bad Atlanta band.......2002-07-06

Hi,
I am a musician in the Atlanta area. In the 70s, these guys were actually the "hot dogs" around town. They were really very good. As a matter of fact, several of the musicians who were in this band are still performing around Atlanta. Although I was into Southern Rock in those days,I loved this song. I still perform around the Southeast, and "Moonlight Feels Right" is one of the songs we play through our sound system during our breaks. I don't know what the album sounds like, but the single of "Moonlight" is a great pop hit.I am glad it still sells.

5 out of 5 stars Not Country, but good vocals........2006-07-08

While this CD "MEMPHIS PRINCESS" by Deborah Allen, is not typically Country.. It crosses many different genres. A 12 track CD with 2 bonus tracks and a hiden track; a kind of different version to her 80's pop-country hit "BABY I LIED." But nevertheless the song is still as good as it was back in the 80's! Deborah Allen is a very talented song writer, as she has written/co-written almost every song on this CD, with the exception of the first track "TIRED OF BEING ALONE," written by fellow musician, Al Green. Deborah Allen is also a very talented songstress!! Please, believe me when I tell you, it may not be country.. but with the different genres it still shocases Deborah's beautiful vocals!

2 out of 5 stars "Memphis Princess" Not a Crowning Set of Work for Allen.......2006-06-06

Prime Cuts: Tired of Being Alone, Natural Tears, Baby I Lied (Hidden Track)

If tendency has a face, it would have to be Deborah Allen's. After racking a decade of hits in the 80s with radio darlings such as "Baby I Lied," "I Hurt for You," "Heartache and a Half" among others, her popularity began waning in the early 90s. Forking out money from her own pockets, she recorded "Delta Dreamland." Released by the now dysfunctional Giant Records, Allen struck big time again begining with the sultry "Rock Me (In the Cradle of Love)." "All That I Am," the follow-up Giant release was so good that many of the tracks ended by in LeAnn Rimes' multi-platinum "Blue" set. Despite being released from Giant Records, Allen continued to record for Curb Records and a few self-released CDs. However, it has been some time since her last effort. Hence, expectations were high with the release of "Memphis Princess."

However, as far as the production of the CD goes, disappointments are in spades. Instead of releasing a state-of-the-art set that could give Faith Hill and Gretchen Wilson a run for their monies, Allen and her hubby Rafe Van Hoy regress back to the paltry days of the urban cowboy days with démodé drum programming and cheesy synth work. Devoid of any rustic instruments a la fiddles and steel guitars, this is not a country record. But that's not the major problem; this is just such a ropey attempt at 80s pop that it brings ignominy to the word "soul."

Nevertheless, the redeeming moment of this set is still Allen's voice. Never loosing an iota of her vocal nuances, she can purr with that seductive charm on one hand. On the other hand, when she croons a ballad, she knows how to vocally mine the depths of a broken heart displaying a vulnerability that lesser artists can only dream of emulating. Like most of the Allen's canon of work, most of the writing chore comes from the lady herself with her husband as well as a few outside writers. However, "Memphis Princess" is introduced by the album's only cover, Al Green's "Tired of Being Alone." Performed with an understated passion, Allen's performance here is tour de force. And truth be told, it's the best cut on the set. Also, packing plenty of punch at the heart is the keyboard-laced ballad "Natural Tears," finding a broken hearted Allen at romance's tail end. As a hidden track, coming in after the CD's last track, is Allen's rendition of her big hit "Baby I Lied." With a more stripped down backing, this track dealing with love's gimmicky, is still poignant and refreshing.

Unfortunately, the rest of the album borders on tedium. With generic titles such as "I Love You," "Falling in Love," and "Woman," there are no shafts of insights offered on these paeans. "Falling in Love," though it has a nice melody, does not really have anything to say beyond the narrow confines of its title. The wailing electric guitars, the ear popping drum machine and that awful synth on tracks such as "Fantasize Me," "You Don't Want to Touch My Heart" and "Woman" are just on the overkill, making listening an agony. Out of gallantry for the lady, I shall refrain from further expositions of such a torture. This Memphis princess has had released some stellar material over the years, unfortunately this one will not be part of her tierra of great works.

One thing this versatile artist has never been short on is raw talent. She proves it again in Memphis Princess. R

4 out of 5 stars Deb is back.......2006-05-25

If you are a Deborah Allen fan, and specifically, her 80's Prince produced Telepathy LP, you will love this CD. It is truly not country. There are some excellently written, produced and recorded trax on this CD. Any true DEBFAN will be happy to add this to their collection. She records Blues, Country, Dance, and Pop, this crosses several lines and Genres. Remember to listen to the unlisted Track 15, a slower, edgier version of her smash, 'Baby I Lied', which was also on her Best of CD. Look for more releases soon from Renaissance Records and Deb, and check out the deborahallenbabyilied fan site.

3 out of 5 stars Memphis Princess .......2006-05-22

I'm a huge Deborah Allen fan. Cheat the Night, and Let Me Be the First are two of my all time favorite albums. I still listen to them all the time, I have all her albums (even Trouble in Paradise!). I've missed her for years- and always look for her songs on other albums.

I often thought her "Best of" album would have been great if she covered the songs she wrote for others.

When I saw that she was writing and producing with Rafe Van Hoy again, I got even more excited to hear memphis Princess.

I will say this album may grow on me more (3.5, maybe?), but I can't help but wonder if she worked with a really strong, current producer to indulge (and reign in) all her talent, she would deliver an unforgettable album.

I'm not sure why this is considered the "blues"- but it isn't country. It kinda sounds, at times, like some of the cheesier 80's rock. Lots of synths.

That said. I can't wait to hear what comes next.

Hey, Rick Rubin...you listening? Trust me on this one.

Both my husband and I enjoy this CD. We love the music of this time period. Have given it as a gift and all the recipients have felt the same.

5 out of 5 stars The best at what they do!.......1998-12-08

I just got back from a Hamilton College performance of this group and was very impressed. Not only do they master the old but they write the new! Keeping to the style of those they play of course. Of all the CDs that they have made, this is their most famous and covers the 11th to the 20th century. I can fall asleep to it, I can write a paper to it, or just enjoy it by itself.

5 out of 5 stars STARCASTLE: Live At Last.......2000-09-04

I never had the pleasure of seeing this band live. What a treat to finally have a quality recorded concert CD. It's really amazing to hear them reproduce their complex, highly produced songs almost to perfection in a live setting. Particular praise most go to their flawless rendition of "Lady of the Lake" and the total treat of hearing a previously unreleased track "Breath and Thunder". Terry Luttrell sings suprisingly well on stage. Gary Strater's bass playing is excellent as always. The whole group cooks. And I'm sure this wasn't the best show they ever did. My enthusiasm at having something "new" from Starcastle moves me to give the 5 Stars. I'd downgrade this to a 4 on the basis of poor packaging. There are only short liner notes that are somewhat reserved in their praise of the band. There are no details given of where and when the show was recorded. There are no new photos of the band or what was (by all accounts) their spectacular stageshow. Other than that, this is a definite MUST for every true blue Starcastle fan.

3 out of 5 stars An Interesting Discovery.......2000-07-27

As a Yes fan, I try to keep my eyes'n'ears open to discoverbands influenced by Yes. Mostly, the result is disappointing - onceyou find bands like this, something is missing. But Starcastle comes closer. It's more rocking and also more electronic (1970's synths) than Yes, and what's probably the most important thing is that Terry Lutrell has a very light voice like Jon Anderson, though not as skilled and bright as Jon Anderson's. »Concert Classics - Volume 5« is a pretty good album. The highlights are »Can't Think Twice« and »Lady Of The Lake«. The reason why I "only" rate the album to 3 stars is that I can't help comparing Starcastle to Yes, and they do not reach the unique level of Yes!

4 out of 5 stars Great performance, ok song selection........2000-04-26

I have seen this band perform 4 times and can attest that their shows were HOT! The power of their live show can be felt on some of these songs but others lack energy. There are only 2 songs from the first album and 1 from the second, while 4 songs come from Citadel (3rd release). By this time the band started to abandon some of the musical adventurism for a more "pop" sound, probably the result of bad advise from record execs. Still this CD is well worth the price as some of the material burns, with the bass leading the charge. Twin guitar leads not unlike Wishbone Ash and Yes-like harmony vocals fill out the sound.

5 out of 5 stars Live albums show the heart of a band.......1999-08-02

When I listened to this Starcastle CD I was not sure what I would find and was elated to discover that this band is better live than in the studio. While the studio CDs are excellent, the live CD shows the real heart and soul of the band
