Motion: A Six Degrees Dance Collection

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The San Francisco-based label Six Degrees has become a hub in the ecstatic realm of loungy dance music. It focuses, to a great extent, on an urban-tropical hybrid that rings true for anyone who's shaken off beach sand, crossed a well-paved esplanade, and found themselves in a civilized nightclub. Motion celebrates such "fourth world" party music right from the start with Bebel Gilberto's intoxicating "Sem Contencao"--the beats as persistent as a patient suitor, Gilberto's vocals seductive enough to excuse her for once helping Kenny G cover her parents' classic, "The Girl from Ipanema." "Ipanema," of course, is the über-single for endless-summer lovin'. There's little here with that song's potent insouciance, but the heady mix of synthesized languor and techno-fied desire that is Monisa Ramos's psychedelic "Ocean" and Euphoria's heavenly "Delirium" make for excellent after-hours music any time of the day. --Marc Weidenbaum

Product Description
Motion is the first release in a new Six Degrees series that gathers rare remixed versions of some of our favorite tracks and presents them in one complete collection. Artists such as Bebel Gilberto, dZihan and Kamien, Banco de Gaia, Monica Ramos, DJ Cam and Euphoria are given the dance remix treatment from world class producers/remixers AtJazz, King Britt, Demon, Romanthony and more. Motion moves and grooves into the worlds of house, funky breaks, and trance yet never loses sight of the beat. This Six Degrees collection proves once again that when it comes to the world of dance music "everything is closer than you think."

3 out of 5 stars Worth the Price for Track #6 Alone!.......2005-02-03

Being a Six Degrees junkie, I picked this up cheap at a used CD store and got my money's worth. A couple of the tracks are too repetitive for my taste (Tracks 3 and 5), but the wonderful Dzihan and Kamien are represented with two slamming cuts. The At Jazz Remix of their classic "After" is made for trance heaven, and this is the only place you can get their song "B-Movie," which has a wicked bass line and slamming groove. This song could fill a dance floor in a heartbeat, and justifies the purchase price. Tracks 7, 8, and 9 were more for chilling, not for dancing, but there are a few cuts here that will get your next party off to a great start!

2 out of 5 stars slightly disappointed.......2002-09-21

i love the six degrees collections, and i love dance music (deep house, funk, and hard techno)-- so when i saw this i thought it'd be the perfect cd for me. unfortunately, the majority of these cds (either in their original form or the same form) are on other six degrees collections-- and the originals are way better. adding a BOOM-chi-BOOM-chi-BOOM-chi does not turn bebel gelberto into a tech-house classic. many songs i find annoying and skip over, but i still pop it in my cd player every once awhile so it still gets 2 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Motion for everyone.......2001-02-05

This CD had me moving from the start, and it doesn't disappoint. Another great collection from Six Degrees, a fine label from San Francisco with world electronica tastes. I own several gems from the Six Degrees stable, and this one may be the best. It begins with a cookin' version of Bebel Gilberto's near classic, Sem Contencao, moving confidently to an Atjazz remix of dZihan & Kamien's dance floor friendly opus, After. By Cut 4, the brilliant Bob Holroyd anthem, Drumming up a storm, you're in beat heaven. DJ Cam keeps things firing with the speaker standing DJ Cam Soundsystem. Also pretty cool is the Rinocerose meets Tangerine Dream like sound of dZihan & Kamien's, B Movie. Things falter a bit with the boring Banco de Gaia track, Obsidian, while the Cut # 8 snoozer, Ocean, by Monica Ramos, had me searching for the fast forward button. But an interesting Garry Hughes mix of the Euphoria standard, Delirium, made a nice exit of a great CD. A must have for fans of good music. Highly recommended for everybody else.

3 out of 5 stars Six Degrees of Motion.......2001-02-03

This is a great little ditty of a compilation. The Six Degrees camp put together a nice ecletic mix of artists to groove too.

4 out of 5 stars Movement may be the wrong title..........2001-02-01

Dear listeners, I recently bought this album with the intention of getting songs geared towards "movement", or dance. Knowing previous Six Degrees releases, their stuff tends to be on the acid jazz/ambient side of things... but I decided it would be worth a shot. Even though a lot of these songs are good, they arent what I would dance to. Its great background music, and even has acid jazz overtones. I recommend this to ambient listeners, but also those who enjoy the diverse creativity displayed by artists that aren't as well-known as mainstream ambient/trance. Due to this, I give this album 3.5 stars. Well thought out playlist... I think its worth the money, for sure.

The second volume of Six Degrees Records' Motion series furthers the label's commitment to bring sophisticated groove dance music from around the world into living rooms and dance floors alike. The nine tracks on Motion 2--all remixed from their original versions by a stellar cast of globe-trotting knob twiddlers--cruise through a variety of styles, employing an inventive, thoroughly modern take on both traditional music and straight-up dance.

Among the highlights are Ron Trent's jumping remix of the New York-based Latin duo Batidos's "Tengo Sed," Bob Holroyd's remix of his own percussion-heavy extravaganza Drumming Up a Storm," Q-Burns Abstract Message's beat-heavy take on Hawke's "Party People," and mix master Jack Dangers's sleek reworking of the incomparable Banco de Gaia's sitar-driven "How Much Reality Can You Take." With the exception of Josh Wink spinning his wheels through Tweaker's aptly titled "Linoleum, all the tracks on Motion 2 are ideal for those seeking dance music with a light touch, leaving the heavy beats of techno and house behind for airier, more flexible approaches. --Carl Hanni
