Compared to the minimalist plonk typical of the genre, this is a Technicolor epic and perhaps the only ambient techno opus you'll ever need. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars still a classic.......2007-07-11

I decided to write a review for this since I did not see too many
recent ones. This album holds a special place for me and every time I
listen to it I am reminded of worlds I had forgotton. FSOL never did
top this, but one amazing album is no small feat. This is more of a
soundscape disc so if you are wanting something similar to FSOLs more
upbeat tracks like "We Have Explosive"--stay away. The albums artwork
still effects me. I am a 3d artist, and despite being obviously dated
(technically) the art on the inner sleeve of the girl reaching out
to the weird alien orb is still a powerful image--and sums
of the themes of this album very well. I own a lot of cds
but there are a select few which will always be on rotation--Lifeforms
will always be one of them.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums - Disc 1 especially.......2007-05-01

Lifeforms Disc 1 is one of my favorite albums' of all time. It paints such a dreamy scape where you can let your imagination run wild. For me, I get lost in a very comfortable place so far away from the daily grind. You can't rush through this album either, it all builds up, and for me piece # 5 is the pinnacle. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Another top album of the 1990's.......2006-10-09

This is another great from the 1990's deserving a top slot. This would be unrecognizable to the post 9-11 dance music period where conservatism and market segement guarding is the order of the day. This is way "out-there" yet totally consistent with the ethos of electronic dance music. While mainly in the "ambient-techno" realm, this far -out interplanetary, interdimensional journey would make Miles Davis listen up. A much needed post-modern futurist philiosophical oddessy melding indiginous philosophy, "cyber-culture", impressive technique (which is a doubledged sword at times), bio-astronomy, geniusly subtle ecological statements and just plain super cool psychedelic art. This has aged very well and represents the very best of what "ambient-techno" is capable of. Oh for a dance music scene as adventurous as this was. Excellent. Very trippy. A classic.

5 out of 5 stars Great album that can be expanded.......2006-04-18

This album always conjures up strange visions for me. The soundscape is so vivid that it actually distracts me if I leave it playing as background music.

I would say that this is the best album FSoL has created to date, but that assumes that their albums can be compared to each other. Like so many great musicians, each of their albums has a distinct feel to it and, once the album is done, there will never be anything else quite like it. One nice thing about this album is that besides two wonderful discs, you can also get the remixes of Lifeforms and Cascade which are wonderful almost album-length works that stand on their own.

I have (as far as I know) all of the FSoL/AA CDs up through Alice in Ultraland and when I run Lifeforms through my mp3 player, I always end up listening to the Cascade remixes, then Lifeforms, then the Lifeforms remixes and turn it into a nearly 3 hour experience.

Anyway, the upshot of this is that I would recommend this album to anyone who has an imagination, and if you love it, Cascade and Lifeforms.

5 out of 5 stars Lifeforms is the best album ever........2006-01-25

This album was my introduction to electronic music, and I have yet to find any electronica that exceeds it. Lifeforms makes insanity sound glorious. I have listened to it more than any other album in my collection. It is truly unsurpassed. It sounds like enlightened honey. Listen to it - in order - at least three times on a good system before you form an opinion of it because it is organic, layered, and tells a sensory story.

This three-disc release from Om Records coincides with the tenth anniversary of the label. They've dug deep into the vaults to provide one part house, one part downtempo, and one part classics. While the first disc gets the mix treatment from DJ Fluid, the remaining two stand on their own unmixed. Disc one features a cross section of some of the more contemporary vocal house sounds from the usual suspects, including Kaskade, Colette, Chuck Love, and Marques Wyatt. Disc two is where things start to get really interesting--the slightly more slept-on downtempo sound of the label is represented by a collection of soulful, atmospheric tracks. Tracks from all-star producers J Boogie, King Kooba, and Raasham Ahmad keep things flowing with a touch of the hip-hop vibe. Disc three covers everything from the classic Mushroom jazz track "Remember Me" to the Joshua rework of Naked Music's "It's Love." This disc is a tour de force of the tracks that have kept crowds moving for the last 10 years. Om is covering a lot of ground with these discs: veterans of the scene get a chance to fill out their collections and newcomers get to catch up on the classics. Though the tempo and style of these discs vary, the vibe doesn't waver: warm, funky, and signature Om. --Anish Acharya

Album Description

Artists include Marques Wyatt, Mark Farina, Afro-Mystik, Kaskade, King Kooba, Rithma, Colette, J Boogie, Seafoam, and much more.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2006-06-18

This is one of the finest lounge compilations that I have ever heard, If you like lounge-funk-jazzy grooves you really should order it.

4 out of 5 stars Some Serious Cali Funk.......2006-03-09

I just purchased this 3 disc set last weekend and I have been playing it non-stop in my car. My only past experience with the Om label was with Ming + FS, PUTS, and J-Boogie because I usually tried to avoid their cheese ball vocal house releases. The first disc is pretty hit or miss for me because, again I just can't get into the really pop/straight forward vocal house...but there were a few surprise tracks on that disc that I liked. Really just the Fred Everything track and the one from King Kooba. Although the ones from Uneaq and Afro-mystik are growing on me. Disc 2 is all down tempo, even a little experimental in places, and aside from the queso track from Kaskade...everything on that disc is ill. Now disc 3 (the classiscs) is not quite as dope as disc two, but very close...and J.Boogie's 'Golden Nectar' sounds like it could have been released on Ninja Tune. Even some of the house tracks on disc 3 are pushing some creative boundries. No doubt, since I am not the typical Om fan, I probably do not enjoy this compilation as much as some will, but I was seriously impressed by it.

This U.K. duo's landmark ambient techno album Lifeforms (1994) explored lush jungle vistas. Its follow-up opts for a much darker urban nightmare motif that makes it an ideal soundtrack while reading William Gibson. Progressive rockers by any other name, FSOL are highly respected innovators who rate with Orbital as the genre's leading exponent. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff..........2007-01-07

For those with a narrow musical mind, (i.e. the 'top 40' variety) this would be an unbearable CD to have to sit through, but for those with more open musical tastes, particularly in the lineage of ambient, acid techno , then this CD is for you. The soundscapes and musical textures on this masterpiece are eerie, haunting, beautiful, intricate, complex and dark. Hats off to Dougans and Cobain , the musical geniuses behind this production. I particularly enjoy the track 'Glass'. But the songs as a whole fit perfectly together and mesh well. For those looking for something similar, try Tangerine Dream's 'Ricochet'. This is the only album I can compare it to in terms of eerie, haunting, beautiful, intricate , complex and dark. And TG did it back in the 70's...live! Even the album cover , like Dead Cities, is ominous. Good stuff.....

5 out of 5 stars One of my top 5 albums of all time.......2006-01-09

Even though I bought this album almost a decade ago I have to express how wonderful of an album it is. The brilliance of this album lies in the conjured images it leaves in ones mind after listening to it. It seems the music was composed for a noire sci-fi film yet to be made. One moment its hostile the next its absolutely beautiful. Each track fades into an other weaving in and out of you're subconcious. If you're to get one electronica album its this one. A timeless masterpiece of epic proportions. FSOL's most surreal album to date.....do yourself a favor and get it while you still can.

5 out of 5 stars One of the top 10 cd's ever produced.......2005-10-10

There's some good songs on ISDN and some good ones on Lifeforms, but this entire album is creme de la creme. It is definitely one of my favorites of all time. Each track has it's own identity, you never know where the next one is going. In a good way.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than Great.......2005-09-06

What's more to say about what may be the best "rock" album ever (especially if you consider the "My Kingdom" EP to be the second disc in a two disc set)? The most emotionally wide-ranging album from one of the best bands ever. Who else has ever made music like FSOL? The Beatles and Fripp&Crimson are the only possible contenders. I've never heard anything that does a better job of juxtaposing the terrifying and the unbearably beautiful. If I could pinpoint the one disinguishing feature of all FSOL/AA releases, it would be (as a line in "The Isness" goes) "...[a longing for] inexhaustible ecstasy." It's all the more poignant on this album because of its being interwoven with themes of terror, paranoia and a sense of unrecoverable loss of something without which life isn't worth living. It sounds hokey, but just opening up the booklet while listening to "Her Face Forms in Summertime" and reading the scrawled message "things are getting f*&ked up round here" makes my eyes a little watery. My CD developed a 2 second glitch and I just ordered another one--this is so incredible that nothing less than perfection will do.

Just a few points of note: if you're wondering why you spent all that money on your two channel stereo and you haven't heard this album yet, pick it up and turn it up. I've heard recordings with more bottom end and slam, but none with more depth, nuance and musicality. I've also found that one of the true tests of a Masterpiece is whether it's possible to really enjoy listening to anything else after its over. Play Coltrane's "Ascension," Beethoven's String Quartet in A Minor Op. 132, or Bruckner's Ninth and see what I mean. I played Dead Cities last night and everything to which I tried to listen sounded hopelessly trivial afterwards. In the early 80s, a lot of my friends used to speak of The Clash as "the only band that mattered." At the time, I didn't think any band had mattered all that much since '72. To my now-much-older ears, FSOL fits that description more accurately than any band to the last 35 years, and this is probably their best work (every single one of them is a desert island disc, however). One of the very few utterly timeless classics of modern music, and a record that belongs in the collection of anyone with ears.

5 out of 5 stars !.......2005-03-08

For me, this is my favorite FSOL record. Leans heavily on trip hop flavors and does not sound like Lifeforms at all. Well performed and intellegently written.
Great spin!

From the opening bars of "Wild and Peaceful" (almost a description of the group's style) with its soaring strings, crystalline piano, and flawless vocal harmonies, it's apparent that No Time Like the Future is rich with Incognito's patented blend of soul and finesse. "It Ain't Easy," with its refrain of Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On," is a classic funk outcry; "Fearless" is a wordless chant with some great rhythm guitar and booting jazz saxophone; "Nights Over Egypt" backs another great vocal with popping bass and orchestral atmospherics; "Black Rain" mixes exotic drumming with some subliminal dissonance. Producer-composer-guitarist Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick has added string arrangements by Simon Hale, appearances by the horns of the hot Cuban band Irakere, and the performances of small army of R&B singers (Maysa, especially) and British contemporary jazz players (Ed Jones stands out on tenor and soprano). The result is an irresistible combination of strong songs and pulsing rhythm tracks, all polished to slippery perfection. --Adam Rains

5 out of 5 stars "No Time Like the Future" had some good songs on it........2007-05-14

Incognito's album "NO TIME LIKE THE FUTURE" is one of those albums that draws in the listener the moment that he or she begins listening to it, especially if one happens to be a fan of this particular genre of music, or this band, or both. (I'm in the "both" category.) Although this album contains only 10 tracks, quite a number of them are can certainly be classified as ear candy, and others are quite a treat if one is going out or shopping. For instance, we have:

Track 1: "Wild and Peaceful"
General comments: the title pretty much sums up the song title as well as the album as a whole

Track 2: "Get Into My Groove"
General comments: worth repeat earfuls; awesome, top-notch vocals

Track 3: "It Ain't Easy"
General comments: great for shopping

Track 4: "Marrakech"
General comments: such a nice, relaxing and calm background

Track 5: "Fearless"
General comments: The perpetual harmonizing quickly becomes addicting (this aspect of the song adds to it and hence the extra credit) and parts of the background remind me of video game that I used to enjoy playing. The aforementioned harmonization, or one very similar to it, would have done wonders for the song "Jacaranda."

Track 6: "Nights Over Egypt"
General comments: If anything, then the entire album itself is worth buying just for this one song alone. I first heard a condensed David Morales Remix of this song on the band's "BEST OF" album released in 2000. I didn't care much for it at first, but after a while, it just... grew on me. It became something to which I would give a 10, and it made me want to hear this, its original counterpart. This version of the song was pretty much everything that the original lacked and then some. For instance, one is treated to what sounds like a gong between the choruses, whereas in the remixed song, the choruses are pretty much added together with no space in between. However, the main aspect of the remixed song which held my interest was the second half. Here, it is similar, only one is treated to it for a longer duration. As if that weren't enough, the ending features a scatting M. Leak in conjunction with the other leading and backing vocalists. Despite being 7 minutes and 8 seconds, this song goes by very quickly. It is over before one knows it. Whether it is the condensed David Morales remix song found on "BEST OF" or the original song featured here, the second half of "Nights Over Egypt" is ALWAYS the best. I can't stress that enough.

Track 7: "Centre of the Sun"
General comments: great vocalization by Leak (so what else is new?), but somewhat on the slow side

Track 8: "More of Myself"
General comments: another one of those fun-to-listen-to-if-you're-going-shopping songs

Track 9: "I Can See The Future"
General comments: parts of the background of this song are virtually identical to "Jacob's Ladder" of "100º AND RISING." Other aspects of this song's background are calm and serene and parts of this are joined by a variety of saxophones. I can see myself listening to this song on "repeat" a least a couple of times a week from now on (looks like they're not the only ones who can see the future... LOL).

Track 10: "Black Rain"
General comments: You can't go wrong with a title like "Black Rain" and in the background of this song, you can even hear what sounds like pouring rain. It becomes much more audible near the end, however.

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE GENIUS.......2004-11-24

I should have written this a long time ago. I'm a huge fan of horn bands. That's what initially drew me into the Incognito circle. Their early albums featured a horn section that wouldn't wait, reminiscent of Tower Of Power, Blood Sweat & Tears and Chicago --- with a decidedly funk base. So I got them all.

When this CD came out, I was expecting more of the same horn-driven funk. And what I got was a spiritual experience unlike any other Incognito release up to this point. The horns are there, just more subdued and situated in appropriate slots, but with the emphasis on Bluey's return to his diverse roots. He found Mecca on this musical journey and I'm glad he took us with him. Maysa is featured, but all the vocalists are outstanding.

Even after their latest two CDs have been released, this remains one of my favorite driving music CDs. Every song whips you along in a wave of delight. My personal favorites: "Marrakesh" and "Nights Over Egypt". This CD is an invaluable addition to anyone's collection. It shows Bluey's maturity and range. And it is as Funky as you would expect. I wanted more horns, but I got more body and a more unified sound. Great CD.

"They're so antisocial," said Mixmaster Morris of the reclusive Future Sound of London. "They won't even go to parties anymore--they do all their gigs over the telephone." After the success of their majestic "Papua New Guinea" single and the Accelerator album from which it was taken, FSOL retreated to the studio and never left. Their only communication with the outside world was through their music, an increasingly abstract Dadaist collage of overdubbed beats and noises that defied genres and stymied trend-happy journalists. While some of the material on ISDN was previously released under the pseudonym Far Out Son of Lung (the worst-kept secret in dance music), the bulk of the album was taped from performances delivered via digital telephone links to radio stations throughout Europe. Naturally, the ubiquitous and intrusive medium of radio encourages challenging and elaborate environmental music. So unlike their previous album, Lifeforms, whose closest earthly relation was techno, ISDN is the distant cousin of jazz, both in its blatant sampling of sax and drums and its freeform, exploratory nature. --Matthew Corwine

5 out of 5 stars Stories within !.......2007-03-04

With some imagination , together with this music , it brought me to another world . Yes , thats FOSL . This album was non-stop with song after song , just like telling you a story . Those who were looking for something different , then this must be the one . Its music never sound backdated and its always fresh !

5 out of 5 stars My personal favorite.......2006-07-09

Of all the FSOL albums, this one is my personal favorite. Wild ambience to say the least. "The Black Hole" (Disney film) samples galore, and it's incredibly interesting, and varied.

Comical at times to boot. I just laughed with track #1 really hard the first time I heard it, and everything about this album is just awesome.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best..........2005-08-25

I purchased this cd in 1998 , 4 years after its initial release and I just started listening to it again. Its still just as good as when I popped it in my stereo for the 1st time. I truely have respect for a group that can make music with limitless imagination and yet keep it from being a total pile of shiite. They weave in and out of genres and in the process create their own. They're 'live' sound is surprisingly crisp and inventive
(one of the 1st groups to play over the net). It fits this album perfectly. Like they knew something we didn't , something that we take for granted today. The internet and super computer revolution that has its tenticles in everything from the military to governments to the economy. The experimental vibe reflects the experimentalism of todays culture and makes the music that much more potent. Equal to 'Dead Cities' and 'Lifeforms' this album completes the alias of FSOL's best work to date. I highly recommend this album for electronic connaiseurs and amateurs alike.

4 out of 5 stars Gritty soundscapes.......2005-08-14

When people talk about soundscapes, a lot of times you think disparagingly of those ambient chillout recordings that play in National Park gift shop, the ones that feature mindnumbingly simplistic classical arrangements with "nature sounds" in the background, sold at $25 a pop to gullible faux New Age tourists. Rest assured, this album is not like that.

Unlike the lightly echoing textures of the Future Sound of London's previous release "Lifeforms" this disc is a dirty, driving sonic mess, anchored around grindingly distorted samples of horns, guitars, voices, horses, space phasers and goodness knows what else. The result is a gritty, disorganized audio space that's far more visceral than any previous FSOL works. Funny how an album called "Lifeforms" can sound so electronic and detached while an album whose title is dedicated to a soulless, purely technological means of audio transmission (ISDN cables) can sound so down-to-earth and organic. In essence, this completes a major, 3-album shift for FSOL away from their early techno club roots to what I must hesitatingly liken to ambient, experimental dub. (And who could have guessed when this came out that within a decade they would have shifted completely from dub to neo-psychedelia!)

Granted, the length of this (70+ minutes) will drive a lot of listeners bonkers, but the end result is more rewarding to those who possess the patience for it. When the blips and squelches coalesce into a driving backbeat with gorgeously cascading samples, something the listener can actually almost identify as a "song," (Son of Lung, Slider, Dirty Shadows and Egypt are the best examples) the music feels more alive than ever. This is a unique and memorable release.

5 out of 5 stars Take a look through the haunted house of music.......2005-08-09

This is one serious headtrip for the connoisseur. All the sounds blend in and out of each other. It feels almost darkly sensual how the sounds wrap around each other that it is slightly evocative of haunted house and ghosts in the mirror ( admittedly to my twisted imagination ). It manages to sound totally psychedelic ( to me ), haunted and truly emotional on occasions.

Some of you may remember my review of Lifeforms being less than impressed with it. This, however, is something to be impressed with. This truly is awe-inspiring. It truly is my favourite FSOL album of them all ( bar The Isness/Otherness because I haven't got it yet ). This is an album that works on many different levels. If you are feeling introspective, this is the album for you. If you want to take psychedelic drugs, it may not be the album for you but then it again it could be ( depends on how it affects you ). If you want to be lost in the sound of an album, this is the album for you. In fact, just buy the bloody thing. It'll be worth your while, trust me.

4 out of 5 stars Teach them well!!! 4 1/2 ******.......2006-10-15

In hindsight- the Future Sound Of London were no doubt the most creative and interesting electronic "bands" to come out of the electronic and techno explosion of the early 90's as this compilation demonstrates. One can see (well almost) and hear the best elements of ambient classical and techno mixed with a very organic almost liquid sound- and as far as production these boys were and are the best. Key moments from their catalogue are spread across this collection- from the sunrise world techno of papua new guinea and expander to the ambient beat driven classics lifeforms and cascade that literally sound like no other music before or since. Throw in their strange take on triphop ala far out son and my kingdom and its easy to see how amazing this duo was. Amazing cinematic ambient tracks littered with one of a kind samples and the propulsive almost jungle throb of We have explosive fill out the rest of the material. My only complaint is a few track selections( and omissions) mainly max and antique toy which are subpar- would have loved to see more tracks from ISDN and ofcourse nothing off their different label masterpiece The Isness appears due to legal matters. All in all- this is probally all the casual or new fan would need but both Dead Cities(an agressive industrial styled ambient cd) and ISDN(weird live recorded triphop radio transmissions with free from jazz touches) along with the Isness(modern pyschedilia are all highly recommended. Heres hoping a dvd comp of their amazing video and film projects comes soon.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent amalgam of hot sounds........2006-05-21

I didn't know what to expect from this former Delight DJ, but I was pleasantly surprised at the very different and quality sounds presented on Future Listening. There's something for everyone on this album, from cool and fresh to easy and sophisticated. I love the album, which I bought not having heard a single review. I was definitely not disappointed and continue to enjoy the album after years of listening.

5 out of 5 stars I bot this album a decade ago and I still listen to it all the time.......2005-08-12

What a great CD. Very hip. Definitely one of the earliest examples of 1990's lounge music that I am aware of. Some tracks are so good it is unbelievable. There are about 6 tremendous tracks and the other 4 are definitely listenable at worse. You can play this album the whole way thru.

What is interesting is I loved this CD for years and I got Bebel's 2nd CD and had no idea that she was on this CD.

Anyway, if you somehow found this page and you are interested in it enough to have gotten this far, definitely pick this one up and you won't be disappointed. Definitely one of my top 10 favorite CDs of the 1990s, without hesitation. A no brainer. I remember going to more than one martini bar in SoBe back in 1997 and hearing this playing. It fit the mood so well.

5 out of 5 stars Wow... VERY impressive work.......2002-02-05

Wow

I'm having a hard time believing the copyright of this CD. This came out a looong time ahead of it's time. I have it and even now look at the copyright... 1995. Towa Tei was eerily correct because look at the style today - Glucklich compilations, Brazilectro, Ian Pooley, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Jazzanova...

I love this CD. It's very creative, very soothing, and has a touch of everything in it. I can understand what the reviewer meant by the CD seeming a bit "all over the place", but I think that was sort of the idea - a broad sense of musical styles which is just, good music.

Bebel Gilberto was featured quite often here. If you've seen her live, she has a strong connection with the Japanese side of the "new" bossa nova movement, and you can tell that even further in her album Tanto Tempo. What's interesting in this cd is Towa Tei's interpretation of "Batucada". Upbeat, higher pitch and neat - especially if you compare it to the way Bebel Gilberto sang it on the Soundtrack to "Next Stop Wonderland". That version was highly acoustic, and a little lower keyed.

I definitely recommend this cd. It's perfect in my collection, and I listen to it all the time. It's very cool. If you're a fan of Kyoto Jazz Massive, Wei Chi or any of the sounds coming out of Japan (I'm not exactly sure if Wei Chi comes hails Japan) you'll probably enjoy this. Actually, if you're a fan of the "Bossa Tres Jazz" series, you'll REALLY enjoy this. I first heard Technova on the "Boss-A-Troniq" compilation a little over a year ago. I'd recommend that compilation to anyone interested in finding similar sounds - that track has Nicola Conte, Stereo Action Unlimited, EBTG and even Groove Armada on it.

2 out of 5 stars Not alot of thought put into execution of this CD........2001-08-07

I'd describe this CD as having a loungy/Brazilian samba sound overall. While Bebel Gilberto is featured quite a bit on this CD, I think she's better showcased on a pure samba CD. I found this CD to be a bit all-over the place, which is fine, IF it's well-thought out and somehow cohesive. But that was not the case with this CD. In addition to the lounge and samba tracks, two of the songs are very "pop" (which doesn't appeal to me), and one song was a horribly failed attempt at a "global" sound (track 7). I feel that the artist didn't put enough effort into this CD, and just threw some tracks together without sitting back and reviewing them from a technical/artistic standpoint.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS........2001-06-30

If you already have LAST CENTURY MODERN and SOUND MUSEUM, you will also enjoy FUTURE LISTENING. The second track alone, Technova, is worth your while. I couldn't get it out of my head. Best of all, it's happy. Great for daydreaming, or getting through an afternoon of writing papers for a class you don't especially like. If you're still not sure, buy it used--it's cheaper.

Where has this been all my life? Its a stunning mix of ambient, techno and electronica. I stumbled upon this from one of those "best 20 cd's" personal lists that someone had up here. If you are into any kind of electronic/trance/ambient like The Orb, Aphex Twin etc, check this out. Its a tough cd to describe try downloading a track or two and check it out...this is top shelf material...

5 out of 5 stars Sounds that Cascade through your mind..........2002-06-09

this ep collection of various versions of The Future Sound of London's amazing soundscape known as Cascade is, simply put: unbelievable. ambient backdrops...driving beats...swimming, pulsating synth...eerie trance-like soundscapes...there is literally sound all around...enveloping you. the music will, without a doubt, take you somewhere very far away. i can't put it into words too well...it's not easy...one has to listen to this 6 song ep to really understand and appreciate what's going on here.

Cascade is wonderful...it is an amazing feast for your auditory senses...it will carry you somewhere every time. what a treat. thank you Future Sound of London!!!

peace,

5 out of 5 stars Moves energies you didn't know you had.......1999-12-25

This album is awsome. No matter what mood I'm in it will take me somewhere I want to be. It's got some of the best mixes of feelings in it ever. It makes me want to just be. And when something does that for me, I'm grateful beyond words.

5 out of 5 stars a stunning, landmark recording. unbelievable!.......1999-10-13

I can recall hearing the last 20 minutes of this on CBC's Brave New Waves years ago and being totally blown away. After finally figuring out what it was, years later, I can honestly say that "Cascade" is essential listening for anyone interested in ambient/techno/tribal/ethereal (did I miss any category?) music. Is there anything that can compare to "Cascade"? If there is, I love to hear it.

5 out of 5 stars An entrance into the ambient world.......1999-07-22

This was the single album that launched me into the world of techno/ambient music. My friend was playing the CD in his car and I told him to stop as soon as possible at the nearest place where I could get my own copy. The album is never tiresome and will always have immense reply value. Truly transcending hymn.

3 out of 5 stars I Admit, I Kinda Like It.......2003-12-29

This is volume two of the techno compilation "Back To The Future 80s". This follow up isn't too different from the first. For one thing, there are some artists on here that were on volume one (Charles Feelgood, DJ Irene & George Centeno, DJ Cer, Static Revenger, etc). Though volume two only has twelve tracks while the first one has nineteen.

The new version of "New Years Day" is done by David Grund. It's the longest track on the album at 7:14. I'm so gonna play this song on New Years Day. Charles Feelgood returns with his cover-up of Herbie Hancock's "Rock It". Charles Feelgood was in volume one with "Safety Dance". DJ Irene & George Centeno return with the song "Blue Monday". Their version sounds like something played at an extreme sports event. This isn't the first covep up of "Blue Monday" I've heard. I have Orgy's version from 1999. DJ Irene & George Centeno were in volume one with their remaster of "Cars". My favorite track on here is How Hard & Sanz One's "Crazy Train". Oddly enough, that version still brought in the spirit of Ozzy Osbourne's version. I love it. DJ Cer's "Jam On It" is the shortest track on the album at 2:12. Cer's version had a nice 80s feel to it. Another odd but nice thing on the disc. DJ Cer was also in volume one with "I.O.U.". Roland Richards' "Electric Avenue" and Organica's "Burning Down The House" are pretty ordinary. I'm not a magnet to that. I enjoy Pleasurehead's "Final Countdown". No reason at all I like it. Static Revenger returns with "What Boys Like". SR did a cover up of Berlin's "Sex (I'm A...)" and was in volume one. Chris The Greek's "Africa" in here. Since I mentioned it, I hope the people in Africa are having a nice Kwanzaa. Another familiar face here is Mijangos. Mijangos was in volume one with "Don't You Want Me". Now Mijangos is back with "Promises" and lastly, Kid Icarus' "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)" is in this album as well. The last three are more ordinary club mixes. Just not too turned on by it.

Why didn't the people who compiled this up and in "Love Bites" by QED? That was an 80s song by Def Leppard. I love QED's version. It got to be played on US radio. This is like the 80s remake of the year. I still like the CD.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the purchase.......2003-10-26

I'll make this short and sweet. The first compilation was way better than this one. The first song(A cover of U2's "New Years Day") isn't all that bad, I'd probably listen to it a few times before getting sick of it. Otherwise, the rest of the tracks really have nothing to offer. Also, DJ Irene's on this. DJ Irene is absolutely terrible, and anything she touches ends up turning into crap, such as her rendition of Blue Monday!
