Compared to the minimalist plonk typical of the genre, this is a Technicolor epic and perhaps the only ambient techno opus you'll ever need. --Jeff BatemanCustomer Reviews:
still a classic.......2007-07-11
recent ones. This album holds a special place for me and every time I
listen to it I am reminded of worlds I had forgotton. FSOL never did
top this, but one amazing album is no small feat. This is more of a
soundscape disc so if you are wanting something similar to FSOLs more
upbeat tracks like "We Have Explosive"--stay away. The albums artwork
still effects me. I am a 3d artist, and despite being obviously dated
(technically) the art on the inner sleeve of the girl reaching out
to the weird alien orb is still a powerful image--and sums
of the themes of this album very well. I own a lot of cds
but there are a select few which will always be on rotation--Lifeforms
will always be one of them.
One of my favorite albums - Disc 1 especially.......2007-05-01
Another top album of the 1990's.......2006-10-09
Great album that can be expanded.......2006-04-18
I would say that this is the best album FSoL has created to date, but that assumes that their albums can be compared to each other. Like so many great musicians, each of their albums has a distinct feel to it and, once the album is done, there will never be anything else quite like it. One nice thing about this album is that besides two wonderful discs, you can also get the remixes of Lifeforms and Cascade which are wonderful almost album-length works that stand on their own.
I have (as far as I know) all of the FSoL/AA CDs up through Alice in Ultraland and when I run Lifeforms through my mp3 player, I always end up listening to the Cascade remixes, then Lifeforms, then the Lifeforms remixes and turn it into a nearly 3 hour experience.
Anyway, the upshot of this is that I would recommend this album to anyone who has an imagination, and if you love it, Cascade and Lifeforms.
Lifeforms is the best album ever........2006-01-25

This three-disc release from Om Records coincides with the tenth anniversary of the label. They've dug deep into the vaults to provide one part house, one part downtempo, and one part classics. While the first disc gets the mix treatment from DJ Fluid, the remaining two stand on their own unmixed. Disc one features a cross section of some of the more contemporary vocal house sounds from the usual suspects, including Kaskade, Colette, Chuck Love, and Marques Wyatt. Disc two is where things start to get really interesting--the slightly more slept-on downtempo sound of the label is represented by a collection of soulful, atmospheric tracks. Tracks from all-star producers J Boogie, King Kooba, and Raasham Ahmad keep things flowing with a touch of the hip-hop vibe. Disc three covers everything from the classic Mushroom jazz track "Remember Me" to the Joshua rework of Naked Music's "It's Love." This disc is a tour de force of the tracks that have kept crowds moving for the last 10 years. Om is covering a lot of ground with these discs: veterans of the scene get a chance to fill out their collections and newcomers get to catch up on the classics. Though the tempo and style of these discs vary, the vibe doesn't waver: warm, funky, and signature Om. --Anish AcharyaAlbum Description
This ten-year anniversary 3xCD set contains new and never before released tracks from the entire Om roster, along with classics from the last decade. Be it Om's trademark jackin' funky deep house, soul based hip-hop, groovin' downtempo, and everything in between, this album has a lil' something for everyone. Artists include Marques Wyatt, Mark Farina, Afro-Mystik, Kaskade, King Kooba, Rithma, Colette, J Boogie, Seafoam, and much more.Customer Reviews:

This U.K. duo's landmark ambient techno album Lifeforms (1994) explored lush jungle vistas. Its follow-up opts for a much darker urban nightmare motif that makes it an ideal soundtrack while reading William Gibson. Progressive rockers by any other name, FSOL are highly respected innovators who rate with Orbital as the genre's leading exponent. --Jeff BatemanCustomer Reviews:

Better Than Great.......2005-09-06
Just a few points of note: if you're wondering why you spent all that money on your two channel stereo and you haven't heard this album yet, pick it up and turn it up. I've heard recordings with more bottom end and slam, but none with more depth, nuance and musicality. I've also found that one of the true tests of a Masterpiece is whether it's possible to really enjoy listening to anything else after its over. Play Coltrane's "Ascension," Beethoven's String Quartet in A Minor Op. 132, or Bruckner's Ninth and see what I mean. I played Dead Cities last night and everything to which I tried to listen sounded hopelessly trivial afterwards. In the early 80s, a lot of my friends used to speak of The Clash as "the only band that mattered." At the time, I didn't think any band had mattered all that much since '72. To my now-much-older ears, FSOL fits that description more accurately than any band to the last 35 years, and this is probably their best work (every single one of them is a desert island disc, however). One of the very few utterly timeless classics of modern music, and a record that belongs in the collection of anyone with ears.

From the opening bars of "Wild and Peaceful" (almost a description of the group's style) with its soaring strings, crystalline piano, and flawless vocal harmonies, it's apparent that No Time Like the Future is rich with Incognito's patented blend of soul and finesse. "It Ain't Easy," with its refrain of Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On," is a classic funk outcry; "Fearless" is a wordless chant with some great rhythm guitar and booting jazz saxophone; "Nights Over Egypt" backs another great vocal with popping bass and orchestral atmospherics; "Black Rain" mixes exotic drumming with some subliminal dissonance. Producer-composer-guitarist Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick has added string arrangements by Simon Hale, appearances by the horns of the hot Cuban band Irakere, and the performances of small army of R&B singers (Maysa, especially) and British contemporary jazz players (Ed Jones stands out on tenor and soprano). The result is an irresistible combination of strong songs and pulsing rhythm tracks, all polished to slippery perfection. --Adam RainsCustomer Reviews:
"No Time Like the Future" had some good songs on it........2007-05-14
Track 1: "Wild and Peaceful"
General comments: the title pretty much sums up the song title as well as the album as a whole
Track 2: "Get Into My Groove"
General comments: worth repeat earfuls; awesome, top-notch vocals
Track 3: "It Ain't Easy"
General comments: great for shopping
Track 4: "Marrakech"
General comments: such a nice, relaxing and calm background
Track 5: "Fearless"
General comments: The perpetual harmonizing quickly becomes addicting (this aspect of the song adds to it and hence the extra credit) and parts of the background remind me of video game that I used to enjoy playing. The aforementioned harmonization, or one very similar to it, would have done wonders for the song "Jacaranda."
Track 6: "Nights Over Egypt"
General comments: If anything, then the entire album itself is worth buying just for this one song alone. I first heard a condensed David Morales Remix of this song on the band's "BEST OF" album released in 2000. I didn't care much for it at first, but after a while, it just... grew on me. It became something to which I would give a 10, and it made me want to hear this, its original counterpart. This version of the song was pretty much everything that the original lacked and then some. For instance, one is treated to what sounds like a gong between the choruses, whereas in the remixed song, the choruses are pretty much added together with no space in between. However, the main aspect of the remixed song which held my interest was the second half. Here, it is similar, only one is treated to it for a longer duration. As if that weren't enough, the ending features a scatting M. Leak in conjunction with the other leading and backing vocalists. Despite being 7 minutes and 8 seconds, this song goes by very quickly. It is over before one knows it. Whether it is the condensed David Morales remix song found on "BEST OF" or the original song featured here, the second half of "Nights Over Egypt" is ALWAYS the best. I can't stress that enough.
Track 7: "Centre of the Sun"
General comments: great vocalization by Leak (so what else is new?), but somewhat on the slow side
Track 8: "More of Myself"
General comments: another one of those fun-to-listen-to-if-you're-going-shopping songs
Track 9: "I Can See The Future"
General comments: parts of the background of this song are virtually identical to "Jacob's Ladder" of "100º AND RISING." Other aspects of this song's background are calm and serene and parts of this are joined by a variety of saxophones. I can see myself listening to this song on "repeat" a least a couple of times a week from now on (looks like they're not the only ones who can see the future... LOL).
Track 10: "Black Rain"
General comments: You can't go wrong with a title like "Black Rain" and in the background of this song, you can even hear what sounds like pouring rain. It becomes much more audible near the end, however.
ABSOLUTE GENIUS.......2004-11-24
When this CD came out, I was expecting more of the same horn-driven funk. And what I got was a spiritual experience unlike any other Incognito release up to this point. The horns are there, just more subdued and situated in appropriate slots, but with the emphasis on Bluey's return to his diverse roots. He found Mecca on this musical journey and I'm glad he took us with him. Maysa is featured, but all the vocalists are outstanding.
Even after their latest two CDs have been released, this remains one of my favorite driving music CDs. Every song whips you along in a wave of delight. My personal favorites: "Marrakesh" and "Nights Over Egypt". This CD is an invaluable addition to anyone's collection. It shows Bluey's maturity and range. And it is as Funky as you would expect. I wanted more horns, but I got more body and a more unified sound. Great CD.

"They're so antisocial," said Mixmaster Morris of the reclusive Future Sound of London. "They won't even go to parties anymore--they do all their gigs over the telephone." After the success of their majestic "Papua New Guinea" single and the Accelerator album from which it was taken, FSOL retreated to the studio and never left. Their only communication with the outside world was through their music, an increasingly abstract Dadaist collage of overdubbed beats and noises that defied genres and stymied trend-happy journalists. While some of the material on ISDN was previously released under the pseudonym Far Out Son of Lung (the worst-kept secret in dance music), the bulk of the album was taped from performances delivered via digital telephone links to radio stations throughout Europe. Naturally, the ubiquitous and intrusive medium of radio encourages challenging and elaborate environmental music. So unlike their previous album, Lifeforms, whose closest earthly relation was techno, ISDN is the distant cousin of jazz, both in its blatant sampling of sax and drums and its freeform, exploratory nature. --Matthew CorwineCustomer Reviews:

My personal favorite.......2006-07-09
Comical at times to boot. I just laughed with track #1 really hard the first time I heard it, and everything about this album is just awesome.
One of the best..........2005-08-25
(one of the 1st groups to play over the net). It fits this album perfectly. Like they knew something we didn't , something that we take for granted today. The internet and super computer revolution that has its tenticles in everything from the military to governments to the economy. The experimental vibe reflects the experimentalism of todays culture and makes the music that much more potent. Equal to 'Dead Cities' and 'Lifeforms' this album completes the alias of FSOL's best work to date. I highly recommend this album for electronic connaiseurs and amateurs alike.
Gritty soundscapes.......2005-08-14
Unlike the lightly echoing textures of the Future Sound of London's previous release "Lifeforms" this disc is a dirty, driving sonic mess, anchored around grindingly distorted samples of horns, guitars, voices, horses, space phasers and goodness knows what else. The result is a gritty, disorganized audio space that's far more visceral than any previous FSOL works. Funny how an album called "Lifeforms" can sound so electronic and detached while an album whose title is dedicated to a soulless, purely technological means of audio transmission (ISDN cables) can sound so down-to-earth and organic. In essence, this completes a major, 3-album shift for FSOL away from their early techno club roots to what I must hesitatingly liken to ambient, experimental dub. (And who could have guessed when this came out that within a decade they would have shifted completely from dub to neo-psychedelia!)
Granted, the length of this (70+ minutes) will drive a lot of listeners bonkers, but the end result is more rewarding to those who possess the patience for it. When the blips and squelches coalesce into a driving backbeat with gorgeously cascading samples, something the listener can actually almost identify as a "song," (Son of Lung, Slider, Dirty Shadows and Egypt are the best examples) the music feels more alive than ever. This is a unique and memorable release.
Take a look through the haunted house of music.......2005-08-09
Some of you may remember my review of Lifeforms being less than impressed with it. This, however, is something to be impressed with. This truly is awe-inspiring. It truly is my favourite FSOL album of them all ( bar The Isness/Otherness because I haven't got it yet ). This is an album that works on many different levels. If you are feeling introspective, this is the album for you. If you want to take psychedelic drugs, it may not be the album for you but then it again it could be ( depends on how it affects you ). If you want to be lost in the sound of an album, this is the album for you. In fact, just buy the bloody thing. It'll be worth your while, trust me.

Excellent amalgam of hot sounds........2006-05-21
I bot this album a decade ago and I still listen to it all the time.......2005-08-12
What is interesting is I loved this CD for years and I got Bebel's 2nd CD and had no idea that she was on this CD.
Anyway, if you somehow found this page and you are interested in it enough to have gotten this far, definitely pick this one up and you won't be disappointed. Definitely one of my top 10 favorite CDs of the 1990s, without hesitation. A no brainer. I remember going to more than one martini bar in SoBe back in 1997 and hearing this playing. It fit the mood so well.
Wow... VERY impressive work.......2002-02-05
I'm having a hard time believing the copyright of this CD. This came out a looong time ahead of it's time. I have it and even now look at the copyright... 1995. Towa Tei was eerily correct because look at the style today - Glucklich compilations, Brazilectro, Ian Pooley, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Jazzanova...
I love this CD. It's very creative, very soothing, and has a touch of everything in it. I can understand what the reviewer meant by the CD seeming a bit "all over the place", but I think that was sort of the idea - a broad sense of musical styles which is just, good music.
Bebel Gilberto was featured quite often here. If you've seen her live, she has a strong connection with the Japanese side of the "new" bossa nova movement, and you can tell that even further in her album Tanto Tempo. What's interesting in this cd is Towa Tei's interpretation of "Batucada". Upbeat, higher pitch and neat - especially if you compare it to the way Bebel Gilberto sang it on the Soundtrack to "Next Stop Wonderland". That version was highly acoustic, and a little lower keyed.
I definitely recommend this cd. It's perfect in my collection, and I listen to it all the time. It's very cool. If you're a fan of Kyoto Jazz Massive, Wei Chi or any of the sounds coming out of Japan (I'm not exactly sure if Wei Chi comes hails Japan) you'll probably enjoy this. Actually, if you're a fan of the "Bossa Tres Jazz" series, you'll REALLY enjoy this. I first heard Technova on the "Boss-A-Troniq" compilation a little over a year ago. I'd recommend that compilation to anyone interested in finding similar sounds - that track has Nicola Conte, Stereo Action Unlimited, EBTG and even Groove Armada on it.

I Admit, I Kinda Like It.......2003-12-29
The new version of "New Years Day" is done by David Grund. It's the longest track on the album at 7:14. I'm so gonna play this song on New Years Day. Charles Feelgood returns with his cover-up of Herbie Hancock's "Rock It". Charles Feelgood was in volume one with "Safety Dance". DJ Irene & George Centeno return with the song "Blue Monday". Their version sounds like something played at an extreme sports event. This isn't the first covep up of "Blue Monday" I've heard. I have Orgy's version from 1999. DJ Irene & George Centeno were in volume one with their remaster of "Cars". My favorite track on here is How Hard & Sanz One's "Crazy Train". Oddly enough, that version still brought in the spirit of Ozzy Osbourne's version. I love it. DJ Cer's "Jam On It" is the shortest track on the album at 2:12. Cer's version had a nice 80s feel to it. Another odd but nice thing on the disc. DJ Cer was also in volume one with "I.O.U.". Roland Richards' "Electric Avenue" and Organica's "Burning Down The House" are pretty ordinary. I'm not a magnet to that. I enjoy Pleasurehead's "Final Countdown". No reason at all I like it. Static Revenger returns with "What Boys Like". SR did a cover up of Berlin's "Sex (I'm A...)" and was in volume one. Chris The Greek's "Africa" in here. Since I mentioned it, I hope the people in Africa are having a nice Kwanzaa. Another familiar face here is Mijangos. Mijangos was in volume one with "Don't You Want Me". Now Mijangos is back with "Promises" and lastly, Kid Icarus' "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)" is in this album as well. The last three are more ordinary club mixes. Just not too turned on by it.
Why didn't the people who compiled this up and in "Love Bites" by QED? That was an 80s song by Def Leppard. I love QED's version. It got to be played on US radio. This is like the 80s remake of the year. I still like the CD.
