5 out of 5 stars An Uplifting and Amazing Work.......2007-07-29

Brubeck's Mass setting using his signature 5/4 time is a successful marriage of traditional and contemporary, worship and celebration. The "Alleluia" alone is an incredible musical achievement. Brubeck her is clearly God's instrument - and a rare and virtuoso instrument he is!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful choral work + great jazz.......2007-02-09

This music may throw some people for a loop, as it did me at first, because it is a choral Mass and most of us don't realize that Dave composed choral pieces, with his wife doing the lyrics. This Mass was commissioned by 'Our Sunday Visitor' many years ago. It is absolutely beautiful! The operatic choral sections move into the jazz sections and are truly inspirational. My favorite songs are 'the Desert and the Parched Land/The Peace of Jerusalem' and 'All My Hope', which I can't get out of my head all day! Give them a listen.

2 out of 5 stars Lackluster Effort.......2004-05-05

I was very disappointed in this CD. This piece in no way compares with Brubeck's "Gates of Justice", which is spectacular. There are a few worthwhile moments for the soloists, but for the most part, the writing is uninspired.

4 out of 5 stars A Worthy Effort.......2002-07-23

"To Hope!" is Dave Brubeck's attempt at composing a mass, or Christian liturgy. The result is mixed. Unlike Vince Guaraldi's masterpiece "Grace Cathedral Concert," this is not a jazz piano mass. Instead, it is largely a contemporary-classical work, focused on vocals and traditional arrangements. It does, however, include several jazz passages, including one that swings almost like a '50s surf-rock record. Not everyone will like this recording, but every fan of jazz or contemporary sacred music should listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars A Celebration of Dave Brubecks Works.......2000-03-15

This CD truly shows the diversity of the genius composer Dave Brubeck. Also credit should to be given to Russell Gloud, the conductor for this CD. This working is one of the greatest pieces by Mr. Brubeck. I recommend this CD to any classical music or jazz fan

4 out of 5 stars Fine Recording, But Get The Beaux Arts.......2003-07-16

The five volumes (thus far) of Haydn's Complete Piano Trios by Trio 1790 are perfectly fine recordings of these great works. However, for less than the combined price of these five volumes, you can purchase the Beaux Arts Trio's 9-CD set of these works in a lovely, space saving, slim paper box. Those performances that have been without peer since their initial release in the 1970s. CPO usually concentrates its efforts on issuing digital recordings of lesser-known works outside of the standard repertoire, and they do a commendable job of it. In many cases, this provides CPO with a unique product and something that's an easy sale -- which is clearly not the case here.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Simply a wonderful CD.......2006-05-03

This was a marvelous piece of work. The vocals were excellent and as usual anything Jordi Savall touches shines. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have listened to it three times in the past week and each time something missed is noticed. It is hard to believe this piece dates back to medieval times. It is simply a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars The longest running show in Europe..........2004-08-10

Some time in the thirteenth century a soldier named Francesc Canto patrolled the waters off of Elche ('Elx' in Catalan), Spain for maurading pirates. A vision of the Virgin Mary appeared to him, and soon after he found a casket. It contained the music and text for the Misteri D'Elx, recorded on this CD. More than a bit of legend doubtlessly pervades this account, but visitors to Elche can still hear the piece performed every year around mid-August (good luck finding tickets). The Misteri D'Elx miraculously remains Europe's longest running religious show thanks in part to Pope Urban VIII who excepted it from the Council of Trent's ban on theatricality within church walls in 1632. It survived the rise and fall of the Spanish Empire, the Franco years, and it just keeps on going and going year by year to the present day. Young boys still play and sing the female roles, including the Virgin Mary, by tradition (which may raise some eyebrows). UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recognized the piece in 2001 as a piece of the heritage of humanity, likely ensuring it another 800 years or more of performance.

The entire festival takes place on two successive nights. This CD contains music for the first part only, la Vespra, performed on the first day of the Elche festival. The second part, la Festa, follows on the proceeding evening (can we look forward to a companion CD in the future?). Both parts together tell the story of the death, assumption, and coronation of the Virgin Mary. La Vespra ends with the Virgin's death, surrounded by the Apostles (summoned by an angel), who vow to bury her in Jehoshaphat, as she requested.

The music moves along slowly. No toe tappers here. Track twelve turns four lines of text into over six minutes of music. Many of the other tracks follow similar methodical and plodding rhythms. The tone and mood inspire awe, contemplation, and reverence for the depicted story. Don't expect to dance. Expect to contemplate and follow the soaring and swooping melodies gorgeously performed by Montserrat Figueras, Arianna Savall, and others accompanied by the always incredible La Capella Reial de Catalunya. Jordi Savall, in the CD book, says he wanted to break the 'unjust old ban' of females from the performance of this piece, and that 'the expressive power and intense spirituality inherent in the symbolism of these characters, particularly in the Virgin and the Angel, required the presence of the female dimension'. The results don't disappoint. Fans of intensely beautiful singing will appreciate every second of this CD. Montserrat Figueras, as the Virgin Mary, and Arianna Savall, as the Angel, give amazing performances throughout. Repeated listenings evoke more and more.

To fully appreciate this piece, follow along with the words at least once (use the Catala column as reference). This bridges the text and music and brings the entire piece to life. Almost exclusive vocal works, such as this one, typically rely on the text to illuminate the melodies to greater heights. The improvised accompaniment of La Capella de Catalunya adds to the effect.

Lastly, Savall and Company call this an homage or tribute to the Misteri D'Elx. In other words, they may have taken some liberties with the structure and music of the piece as performed in Elche. Knowing this group, however, such liberties will result in nothing more than amazing music and performance.

4 out of 5 stars Mysterious and beautiful.......2004-08-02

The vocal soloists on this disc are amazing. I have followed the recording career of Arianna Savall from the beginning, and I must say that nepotism plays no part; she deserves every solo she has. Singing side by side with her mother, it is hard to choose a favorite. Generally, Savall's voice is prettier and her technique a bit more solid, while Montserrat Figueras specializes more in the emotional aspect of the music. On this disc, they are evenly matched; the mother's voice sounds better than it has in years, and the daughter's performance is so hauntingly emotional that it leaves the listener holding their breath. Comparing the two is nearly impossible. They are unmatched in this repertoire.

Ironically, they are part of the reason I cannot give the album 5 stars; their main solos come at the beginning of the work and leave the listener a feeling a bit disappointed that the rest of the disc doesn't quite live up to them. However, I would still strongly recommend this disc to anyone.

          Album Description

This is the first of a 2-CD set which illustrates the kind of music sung and played by the women musicians of the courts of Parma and Ferrara in the second half of the sixteenth century. These women were among the first professional women musicians, and they practised their trade at the peril of their reputations. Some of them did not survive their activities - one was murdered by her husband on suspicion of adultery, another was ostracised by the court for appearing too eager to sing. This disc concentrates on the established madrigal repertoire written by Cipriano de Rore and his pupils Giaches de Wert, Luzzasco Luzzaschi and Marc'Antonio Ingegneri.

5 out of 5 stars Stylish and perfectly historically aware performances in gorgeous sound.......2005-07-13

Erik van Nevel is a performing musician who also teaches choral conducting, chamber music and early music performance practice at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven. He conducts workshops and courses and master classes for choral and ensemble singers, as well as conductors, focusing both on general choral and conducting technique and on more specific performance practices.

There was a period when performances of Renaissance works performed on instruments or with instrumental doubling of vocal parts came to be frowed upon in preference to a capella performances. Around the time this recording was released things had come full circle and both approaches came to be embraced. Erik van Nevel is clearly a scholar fully aware of the latest thoughts in these matters and the listener can rest assured that in matters of performance practice he knows perfectly well what he is doing. The suggestions of ignorance from the previous reviewer should be turned instead on the reviewer himself.

Recordings by Erik van Nevel tend to be terribly difficult to get a hold of, even though he is as good as or better than many of other better known performers in the field of Renaissance polyphony. So this recording should be heartily welcomed by all lovers of Renaissance music. The selection of music here is all wonderfully chosen to illustrate the musical tendencies amongst Lassus' contemporaries, although the much earlier composers Févan, Dufay and Ciconia also make something of a surprise appearance too. So even the slightly hodge podge anthological nature of the CD fails to detract from the fact that most of these works are otherwise unobtainable and above all immensely rewarding to listen to. Particularly noteworthy are the 'Respice in me' by Rogier, the Gombert 'Ave maria' and the de Monte 'Bona est oratio cum ieiunio' just to name a couple of works.

Given that van Nevel's performances can be quite revelatory, he really does deserve to be recorded much more often than he is. And when he has been recorded it has always been in boxy limited sound, so the spectacular audiophile recording he receives here is an embarrassment of riches. A DSD processing system was used along with the usual expertise of the Telarc recording team. The sound-staging is stunning, with wonderful detail, and the typical DSD refinements in sound. It is like taking the cotton wool out of your ears. This may be the most sumptuously recorded Renaissance music CD available today.

Ivan Moody on Goldberg early music magazine had this to say:

"This is a brilliantly accomplished recording in which a smaller group of players from I Fiamminghi shows a real grasp of the idiom of this repertoire. Currende sing with passion and conviction, and are not afraid to allow the darker, meditative aspect of much of this music come out (try Clemens's Ave Maria, for example, or de Monte's Bona est oratio cum ieiunio, for example, where the long-breathed lines of this penitential work are really shaped so that the ensuing harmonic flow seems effortless). I Fiamminghi impress by their slick rhythmic phrasing, their unanimity and their smoothness of sound: the sensation on hearing the very first chord of the first track (an instrumental rendition of Lassus' Passan vostri triomphi) is that one has walked into a velvet cathedral of sound."

Telarc - please can we have more!

4 out of 5 stars A question of "arrangements" but very good otherwise.......2000-06-20

Spanning the years 1430-1600, the Telarc (CD 80521) offers up to 21 examples of Spanish music that provide 67 minutes of absolutely gorgeous orchestral and vocal renditions of pieces known mostly to specialists and scholars. In fact, the featured group, I Fiamminghi, is named after the Italian name for musicians from Flanders who enhanced the Renaissance with their compositions. For "a more authentic performance," four recorders and a lute were added to the usual complement of players. For the vocal selections, they are joined by the Capella Corrende under Erik Van Nevel.

Although the liner notes are silent on this point, the press release quotes conductor Rudolf Werthen thus: "It is interesting when music of the 'past' is performed in a 'contemporary' way.... The alternation of our arrangement with works in their original form...provides the audience with a deeper perception of the compositions that form much European music." I leave it to my betters to determine how "contemporary" treatment of Renaissance music "works" in this context; but it might give a pause to any teacher wishing to use this CD as an educational tool. For myself, I find it very pleasant if somewhat over-consistently serious.

          5 out of 5 stars I finally found it!.......2006-09-12

I heard a segment of this collection on Public Radio in 2003. Everywhere that I looked, claimed this album was no longer in print. I found it right here on Amazon.com, in 2006! For those inclined to enjoy ancient music, I must say this about the album: GLORIOUSLY MEDIEVAL AND RAPTUROUSLY RENAISSANCE! In fact, if there is one track alone which justifies your purchase, it it Spaniol Kochesberger, by Hans Kotter. In fact, I would say that the majority of the music on this CD are great selections. I have been disappointed by other Medieval and Renaissance compliations, in which there are one or two interesting selections, and the rest of the CD is tiresome choral chanting. That is not the case here!

          5 out of 5 stars ... and a stunning recording!.......2003-10-06

I would fully endorse the reviews made by the previous contributors and would add that this is a superb recording, too. The CD appears to be a direct copy form the original two track tape (its AAD, meaning no digital mixing) and the sound is stunning. Proof the simple, high quality analogue equipment delivered amazing results.

          5 out of 5 stars A should-have instrumental Mediaeval/Renaissance album.......2000-11-23

Out of the twenty or so Medieval and Renaissance albums I own and the 50 or so that I've listened to, this ranks as one of my favorite (top 2). This is a completely instrumental album 70+ minutes in length. There are over 70 instruments played by seven performers. The instruments range from strings, renaissance guitars, flutes and percussion gathered from all over the world. The arrangements are creative, rich, lavish and create a musical atmosphere which is truly enchanting. The choices of instrument combinations varies considerably, often in a single song, to make a stagnant melody progress and transform. Although the title says 41 variations of a single melody, I only recognize a few melodies reappearing in different forms throughout the 32 tracks. In sum, this is the renaissance/medieval album I had always wanted to hear, and am glad to have found. I hope you enjoy it!

          3 out of 5 stars XV - Exceeds Expectations.......2004-09-16

I received this audio tape in the mail as a surprise gift from a friend who must have been just as surprised as me to see it in a record store. The group `Doomsday Productions' was more familiar to me as their former alias `Raiders of Doom' (ROD) spearheaded by Platnum Prince and Maestro in North Las Vegas. Back then (1987-1990), they were highly regarded rappers at an inner-city high school that usually entertained during assemblies and the like. I was into fledgling rap and enjoyed the changes NWA had on the industry, to include off-shoots of the "gangsta" style such as Compton's Most Wanted and Above the Law. This was the style of music that ROD emulated. While their performances were entertaining, the production quality faltered as one might expect due to limited resources and the censorship involved with on-campus activities.

Fast forward 5 or 6 years.

ROD has a record label under a new name (Doomsday) with new additions to the rap group, Brother Lynch Hung and Sicx. With some preconceived opinions, I popped in their audio tape and gave it a spin.

Not bad. I thought it would be flat, but in the end, their were some really good tracks (Black Market, Break Me Off and Blaze It Up) and a few equally bad ones (Night Stalka and Rainin' Blood).

The actual quality of the audio tape was poor; for lack of a better word - cheep. I don't know if this translates to a poor CD transfer or lower quality recording equipment but it's certainly possible. Of the rapping talents, I found Sicx to be the most talented. In terms of musical production, the songs varied from being truly groovy, to being a collection of uninspired beats.

In summary, I give this album 2.5 stars out of 5. Pray 4 Me followed this release with similar results, although the recording quality greatly improved.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for this group, and others like it. If you haven't hit it big, it might be time for change; the "gangsta rap" boat done came and left. Westside Connection was the last of them, and Ice Cube is an actor/producer/director now.
