El Stew are a motley assortment: there's Brain, the drummer from Primus; DJ Disk, a.k.a. the Shigger Fragger, the godfather of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz; twisted guitarist Buckethead--who wears a chicken bucket atop his noggin whenever he appears onstage; Eddie Def of the Space Travelers (formerly the Scratch Hamsters); and producer Extrakd. It's an assemblage you might not expect to work, and their music is almost unclassifiable--except to say that it makes for a hell of an interesting listen. The album isn't a seamless mix of the quintet's talents, but it comes close: all five meet on a trippy, abstract plane and share the same twisted sense of humor. (If you recognize the two films they lift the phrase "klaatu barada nikto" from, this is the album for you.) Somehow, El Stew manage to fit funky dance tracks ("Reign of Terror"), bizarre dance tracks ("Surf Mission [Invasion of the Duck Punk]," with its chorus of quacks), and some very experimental, weird music side by side. That it never once feels out of place is an incredible accomplishment. --Randy Silver

5 out of 5 stars better than laswell's "a dub transmission"!.......2004-06-13

even if buckethead's guitar work isn't the focal point of this cd,and even if you normally don't listen to electronic music this disc if well worth checking out!it has trippy samples and the dj scratches aren't ever "overpowering" as they can be on some other dj's albums.it's just a bunch of tripped-out beats that are chilled to the core!a must have for any fan of "the funk troupe"aka buckethead, bill laswell, bernie worrell, bootsy coolins, george clinton, brain, john zorn, etc, etc, etc.cd's to get with this one are "shin terrai-unison",bill laswell/jah wobble-"a dub transmission",buckethead-"over the slaughterhouse",and material-"hallucination engine"

5 out of 5 stars Keeps you interested.......2003-07-28

I tell you, these fools are beat masters. I really like the little samples that prelude some of the songs. Ingenious. I can't play the whole CD all the way through, 'cause a couple songs don't have the mastery that others do. Some of what these guys are doing is unmatched by other triphop artists.
Buy it. Songs 4,5,8,10,11,13 are my favorite.

3 out of 5 stars Another DJ driven band?.......2002-04-12

If you are heavy into other bands like PHONOPSYCHOGRAPH or Extra Kid or are a big phan of the invizbl skratch piklz then you will certainly enjoy this CD. It is a collection of Dubs that reminds me alot of Ben Wa's Devil Dub. Songs that build up so gradually that you don't notice that the music is growing until you are enveloped in a cacophony of screaming noises with distorted guitar wailing away behind it all. On the other hand if you are more strictly a Buckethead phan then you might want to sample a few songs because this most likely isn't for you. If you are a big Death Kube K phan, then you will most likely enjoy this CD as well. The musis seems to grow and swell as an entity rather than just music, on the downside this makes listening to individual songs impossible. If you really want to feel the effect then you have to competely zone out and listen to this CD. Overall another solid DJ diven album from Japan's favorite masked psycho, Buckethead. BUCKETHEAD FOREVER!

4 out of 5 stars first time listener.......2001-01-22

This is a real eye-opener!sheer brilliance, just 4 the Rick Wakeman sample on Igloo condo,i am now in the process of buying as much of El stew,Buckethead and probably Praxis aswell, good show.

5 out of 5 stars Great Works.......2000-10-22

Buckethead rules! If you like DJ work, Heavy Bass and super beats this album is for you. Buckethead doesnt stand out on this recording but is on most of the songs. Igloo condo is one of my favorite songs that buckethead plays on ever. If you like buckethead buy this album for this song alone and you might fall in love with what you hear.

For sheer entertainment value, it's hard to find a classical CD that will beat this one. Gloria Cheng has chosen an astonishing variety of 20th-century piano music with nothing in common except brevity and dance origins. The disc is full of familiar pieces (Debussy, Scriabin, Ravel, Prokofiev) and entertaining novelties (Albright, Martinu, Poulenc, Ginastera). Donald R. Davis's exercise in creative plagiarism, "Illicit Felicity," rates a special mention for its ingenuity. But really, unless you're allergic to Philip Glass, there isn't a loser on the entire program. Cheng plays brilliantly, with appropriate special emphasis on the dance rhythms of the music, and Telarc's sound engineering is typically realistic. It ain't profound, but this is still a marvelous program. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fun to listen to!.......2000-09-18

Listening to this CD is fun. The CD has a diverse selection of contemporary dances for solo piano, ranging from familiar favorites, such as Gollywog's Cakewalk by Debussy, to lesser known and unconventional but charming works, such as del Aguila's Conga. The dances are varied and well-interpreted by Ms. Cheng, who brings poignancy to each one while maintaining throughout the CD a fun and energetic mood.

Ms. Cheng's playing is phenomenal, and I also enjoy her earlier CD of works by John Adams and Terry Riley. Both CD's show off her rich tone and appealing style, but the dance collection is the most entertaining. If you buy this CD, you'll probably find yourself listening to it frequently.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting concept not quite realized.......2000-07-25

A very good concept. Take a noted pianist, in this case Gloria Cheng, and work with her on a program of 23 short works or short sections of larger works, all of which are one form or another of Dance--and you might come up with something good or possibly just a mixed bag. The Telarc release (CD-80549) is such a program. The playing is wonderful, the results what you might expect, alas: a mixed bag.

A very definite positive about this program is that almost every selection was new to me. After all, how many of us are familiar with works like Miguel del Aguila's "Conga," Philip Glass's "Modern Love Reel," or Paul Hindemith's "Shimmy"? I mean, really! So there is much Joy of Discovery afforded by this CD; but with all but one piece running under 5 minutes (and that one at 9:26), a certain cloying factor creeps in after a while, and perhaps I should recommend this be played in small sections.

But all in all, what a treasure-trove of little-known pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Jeni is a great woman of God singing to bless Him!.......1999-08-21

I was really impressed with Jeni's NO HESITATION. I've had the pleasure of meeting this adorable, sweet, godly young woman, and was impressed with her humility and grace and love of God! I was encouraged when I listened to her album, and I believe that you will be too if you buy her CD's. She's giving her all to uplift, glorify, and honor Jesus Christ, and draw others to Him as well. She's an inspiration to me, and I was blessed to meet such a great woman of God who is using her talent completely for our Precious Lord!!! My admonition to all, is to keep seeking and serving Jesus with every part of you. He can use a willing vessel in wonderful ways, as we see with Jeni Varnadeau. Search His Word and follow Him, and you'll be blessed.

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad sophomore effort.......1999-03-17

Jeni Varnadeau was part of the talented Class of '96 of new Christian artists. Her classmates included such talents as Plumb, Fleming & John, Sarah Jahn, the Waiting, and many others.

Varnadeau's first disc was distinctive and stood out as much for the lyrical depth she invested into her songs as for her vocal stylings, which are squarely planted somewhere between Cyndi Lauper/Sam Phillips on one side, and Sheryl Crow/Alainis Morrisette on the other.

Varnadeau is as much of a poet as Jewel and personally, I think she's better.

There's little to dislike about NO HESITATION. The album is still deep, engaging, and fun to listen to. But I can't help thinking it could have been better in one regard.

In her first disc, I got the feeling that the music was 100-percent Jeni. It was her style, her sound. In NO HESITATION, I feel the looming, ominous presence of market-minded producers tainting the disc.

There's one song that could easily be mistaken for an Amy Grant tune. Another that could pass for Margaret Becker. And I'm worried that was intentional, not on Jeni's part, but on behalf of the studio folk.

Jeni Varnadeau is best when she's free to show off her own sound, her own voice, her own personality. And for much of NO HESITATION, she does just that. But there are some exceptions, and I for one hope it does not become a trend. In 2000-2001, when Jeni gets around to her third disc, I'll be the one hoping that it's 100-percent pure Jeni, and not 80-percent Jeni/20-percent Jeni sounding like someone else.

5 out of 5 stars David Barela, Romantic Piano.......2003-01-08

During my lifetime I have met many pianists. One pianist in particular stands out among the rest...Mr. David Barela, who recently released the 'Romantic piano' CD. His keen attention to details and love for his craft resonates through these keys.It is evedent.
The great writer Oscar Wilde, once remarked," In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants. The other is getting it." This "universal " concept is probably applicable to everything on this planet except for Mr. Barela's 'Romantic Piano'CD.
Futhermore, there are a lot of pianists who can play piano very well; However, there is a difference between good and very , very good, and the differences are in the very small details. Mr. Barela is just great with minuscule details.
In conclusion, one can see easily that David is at the pinnacle of his career. He seems to be at that point of maturity that time has provided along with a deep understanding of music and talent that puts him among the best that the classical piano has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars The Elegance of Barela.......2000-11-04

These piano selections are elegant in their presentation. Barela has a sensitivity and flare at the keyboard that is difficult to match. The CD provides many hours of quality listening.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording & unusual selections.......2000-10-31

David Barela's musicianship and the recording itself are outstanding. What interested me most, however, was the selection of pieces. The CD opens and closes with some beautiful, often haunting Debussy works. Between these works, a variety of composers (Chopin, Barber, Granados) and less frequently recorded works are featured to great effect.

A must buy both for Barlea's talented play and for his taste in selecting an interesting set of music for the CD.

5 out of 5 stars This is stunning........2000-06-17

From Debussy's pious Ballade to Isolde's giddy histrionics by Liszt, Barela has conceived these pieces beautifully. It's as though he's playing old friends for old friends. Un Sospiro is a real treasure. Am very pleased to have found this recording!

This is a wonderful CD - perfect for the car. The musicianship is excellent, and selection of pieces perfect for good listening.
