Album Description
Chicago IX: Greatest Hits '69 - '74 was the band's first greatest hits collection. Originally released 30 years ago in November of 1975, it spent five weeks atop the Billboard album chart and has been certified four times platinum! Still to date, it is the biggest selling album of their career. Chicago IX features signature favorites the band still performs on tour today, such as "25 or 6 to 4", "Beginnings," "Saturday in the Park," "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is," and "Call On Me." It was the first Chicago album to feature pictures of the band on the cover, incorporated into their trademark logo. Chicago IX: Greatest Hits '69-74 completes Rhino's reissues of the band's signature early recordings.Customer Reviews:
Pretty good selection.......2007-06-08
As with a lot of music from decades past, this is not something I will listen to very often because of the "burn out" factor of hearing the songs so many times over the years. However, if someone were looking for a good cross section of Chicago hits, this would be the CD to purchase.
Chicago is definately a "superband" worthy of distinction even if over-played.

BASIC HITS COLLECTION, but all the "authentic" original mixes!.......2007-01-04
I'd have to say that in the last thirty odd years, this has to be one of the BEST greatest hits collections to ever hit the market and is a MUST HAVE for anybody with more than a passing interest in TOP 40 hits from the classic pre-disco pop era!

He works magic in film........2007-03-25
Glassworks is an amazing album.......2006-11-12
I subsequently purchased Glassworks and find the music to be extremely powerful. I recommend this album absolutely. I find most of the pieces on the album to be profoundly moving. The last movement from "The Upper Room" is especially powerful and significant.
Great experiment of questionable musical value.......2006-01-30
Let's start again... I absolutely love Opening. It's emotional, it's haunting, it's beautiful, and it's atmospheric. But what follows next... Really, Philip Glass could be a great etude composer. When I'm playing piano etudes, I'm always reminded of Glass' music. Some people say it's atmospheric, I say it's repetitive and boring. Hints of melody and style pierce the arpeggiated clouds on Island and Facades. But that's it.
If you want some good atmospheric minimalism, listen to Harold Budd or Brian Eno. If you want good post-modern influenced compositions, buy James Newton Howard's The Village score. You may want to buy Philip Glass' Glassworks if you can't live without the opening theme or want to find out what his music is about. I've found out. But right now I don't want to go any further...
Love - Hate Relationship.......2006-01-17
From my rating, I clearly fall into the first camp. However, the pleasure you will derive from this CD is undoubtedly personal and subjective, based upon both experience and taste. No doubt, the arguments on both side of the question are passionate and entrenched. I suggest, instead, that you listen to the tracks that Amazon provides. This will give you a sense as to whether you will love or hate the music.
As for my experience with the music, I agree with several fellow reviewers: Glass's methodology is wholeheartedly expressive, providing the composer with ample space to slowly build and play on different moods within the work, making the listener conscious of individual notes, instruments, and rhythms within the ensemble. The only thing I can think to compare this with is, perhaps, flavors. Either you can eat a piece of chocolate hurriedly and grasp the totality of its flavor; or you may calmly savor it and, perhaps, find a nice caramal center, unmask the interplay of various textures, and discover satisfaction in its simplicity.
Bear in mind, however, I approached Philip Glass after having a large exposure to Ravi Shankar and 'classical Indian' music. Some, not all, of the music is rhythmically repetitive. This experience, I think, predisposed me to liking Glass's compositions.
A Few Words on Glassworks.......2005-12-21
First of all people have to realize a few things about this music. Philip Glass did not intend on having this music being played in the background at your next dinner party. Leave that up to Bach and Mozart. What Glass did want with this piece was for mature listeners to realize what he has done with texture and simplicity. Also, Glass's works are not about melody. They are about texture and mood and atmosphere. Each piece has its own shape little additions keep the piece from becoming overly monotonous. I think that Glass has made a great musical statement with his set of pieces that should be carefully digested with an open mind.
For the most part, Glass's concept works. However, the second movement "Floe" could probably be axed or revised. This is the only movement that seems to get unbelivably monotonous. It's also a lot to digest at the beginning of the suite. If it came more towards the end before the closing as opposed to after the opening where it functions as more of a rhythmic pie in the face. Some of the movements could also stand to use a little more variation but for the most part, Glass keeps the pieces interesting.
I cannot say much about the other work, "In the Other Room" that appears on this album, because I own the original Glassworks album. I just wanted to clear up some of the misconceptions that many have about this different music. It's hard to say whether or not Glass's music will stand up to the same test of time as the music of the greats like Mozart's and Bach's, but things are not looking good for Glass, not because the music isn't good, but becuase too many ignorant people immediately dismiss it as garbage. It seems that if people openly knock this music like they do, the same people that put those parental advisory stickers on CDs might want to instigate a separate rating system. This one should be stickered with: "CDMA: Mature Audiences Only."

Makes the best case for the band in 1 disc.......2005-06-28
There are a few cons to this:
"Old Days" was a #5 hit in 1975 and absolutely should have made the cut. I'm not certain why that was excluded unless it was to allow for "Beginnings", which runs nearly 8 minutes. Good as it is, "Feelin' Stronger Every Day" was an album cut and it should have been sacrificed to make room for "Old Days". "Hits" packages are chosen by commercial criteria, not artistic ones. "Best of" collections are where that distinction should be made.
Some other songs that hit the Top 40 are missing from the period ("Question 67 and 68","Free","Lowdown","Dialogue (Parts I and II)"), but they all charted outside the Top 10 so on that basis, the band assembled just about the strongest collection they could muster at that point in their career.
BOTTOM LINE:
The "horn rock" days of the band were their most satisfying artistically if not the chart juggernaut they would become in their adult contemporary pap 80s incarnation. If you only want 1 CD from them, this is the one. If you have more money to spend, get the 2CD "Only the Beginning" on Rhino Records (ASIN B000068ZVQ). It adds on the missing "Old Days", along with "I'm a Man","Baby, What a Big Surprise", "If You Leave Me Now", and "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" (probably the best of their 80s material).
All the Early-Mid Great Stuff..........................2005-01-27
So many collections from which to choose!.......2004-10-20
25 or 6 to 4 (#4 in 1970)
Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? (#7 in 1971)
Color My World (flip of "Beginnings")
Just You 'n' Me (#4 in 1973)
Saturday in the Park (#3 in 1972 - the band's first gold single)
Feelin' Stronger Every Day (#10 in 1973)
Make Me Smile (#9 in 1970 - the band's first Top 10 single)
Wishing You Were Here (#11 in 1974)
Call on Me (#6 in 1974)
(I've Been) Searchin' So Long (#9 in 1974)
Beginnings (#7 in 1971)
These songs are great and much more varied than their latest music. I especially enjoy "Saturday in the Park," which features an upbeat Peter Cetera vocal playfully interweaving with the band's horn section. The melancholic "Colour My World" is another highlight. Over the years, the band released a few other compilations, starting with "Chicago - Greatest Hits: 1982-1989." These first two CDs, however, exclude their late 70s hits, such as "Old Days" (#5 in 1975), "Baby, What a Big Surprise" (#4 in 1977), and their first #1 song - "If You Leave Me Now" (#1 for 2 weeks in 1976). Fortunately in 2002, Chicago released the 2-disk, "The Very Best of Chicago: Only the Beginning," which includes hits from the entire span of their career and was clearly designed to replace their first two anthologies.
I own and like all three of these greatest hits collections. The one you decide to buy will likely depend greatly on how much you like Chicago and what period of their music you enjoy most. If you want a single CD set, then "Chicago IX - Greatest Hits" is my recommendation, as I enjoy their more adventurous 70s music over the glossier 80s ballads. On these songs, they are still the cutting-edge rock band that brilliantly incorporated jazz into rock. However, if you're willing to spend a few more bucks, then I'd highly recommend their 2-disk set.
Dated Collection - but has the best stuff they did.......2004-08-06
There are other collections that will probably give you a more complete. For example, the set "The Very Best of Chicago: Only the Beginning" contains every song on this collection plus a good selection of their material that would follow in the 25 years after the release of "Chicago Greatest Hits". "The Best of Chicago" and "The Best of Chicago Volume 2" are two separate CDs that between the 2, include all of the material on this CD. "Chicago - Group Portrait" is a more complete collection while the boxed set "Chicago - The Box" will provide the most complete library. The important thing to note is this CD has a good chunk of the band's early career. Another thing to point out is that this CD takes songs from the first 8 albums of Chicago's career, but it ignores Chicago III, Chicago Live at Carnegie Hall (IV), and Chicago VIII. There are some nice songs that are also missing from the other CDs, such as "Where Do we Go From Here", and "I'm a Man". While it may seem that you could go easily elsewhere in the Chicago library and find the selections on this CD, it is worth noting there are 11 songs on the collection. Keep in mind that this album was released in 1975 and an 11 song album (without being a double album) was not especially common during that time.
The songs themselves speak for themselves - these are legendary songs and need no introduction. They are: "25 or 6 to 4", "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is", "Colour My World", "Just You and Me", "Saturday in the Park", "Feelin Stronger Every Day", "Make Me Smile", "Call on Me", "(I've Been) Searchin So Long", and "Beginnings". The ordering of the song does disappoint me as well. The songs are basically mixed up with no logical order. I usually prefer my greatest hits to be in chronlogical order. (It is ironic that the song "Beginnings" is the last song)
There are some very interesting facts to consider. The great songs on this collection had three different singers - Robert Lamm, Terry Kath, and Peter Cetera. Another amazing fact is that the band didn't have a number one single until the late 1980s with"Chicago 19"'s "Look Away" (almost 20 years into their careers) - yet this was probably Many say that it is the late Terry Kath who was the champion of the "Chicago Sound" and once he passed away in 1978, the balance of power started to shift to the likes of Peter Cetera who would begin to transform them into a ballads band.
The "Chicago Greatest Hits" CD has some real poor liner notes. The band members are listed - there are little in the way of production credits. I know many of the band members play multiple instruments depending on the song - I still would have liked to have seen this included. No lyrics are included. A nice thing is that the original album for each of the 'greatest hits' is listed. Normally, I would have given this 2 stars - but there is some good quality material on here and probably contains the best stuff the band did. My advice would be to only pick this album up if you can get it at a significant discount - otherwise look at some of the more recent compilations or boxed sets the band has done. You probably will get more value for your money.
Still The Best Collection...........2004-05-13

Customer Reviews:
You've never heard "The Godfather" like this.......2003-08-13
The melancholy themes from "The Godfather" have probably never been played so well. The famous opening trumpet solo, combining loneliness and menace in equal parts, is beautifully done, as are the relatively upbeat selections from "8-1/2" and "La Dolce Vita." Throughout the production, it is marvelous to hear these scores played with such passion and commitment, and the La Scala musicians sound sweepingly involved.
But for many listeners the highlight will be the dazzling and haunting waltzes from "The Leopard," with their melodic arcs echoing the grand scale of Visconti's masterpiece. This is truly evocative film writing.
An excellent introduction to Rota's music, played with suave intensity by one of the best conductors in the world. (For those interested, Muti and La Scala recorded another Rota CD with additional dances from "The Leopard," as well as music from "La Strada" and the "Concerto for Strings" -- also highly recommended.)
Italian Scala and Muti feels Rota!.......2001-07-25

A superb interpretation of Llobet's music.......2006-10-30
EXCITING MUSIC.......2006-03-25
Let's come to the inside of it.It has all kind of music forms composed by llobet such as;Catalan Folksongs,Preludes,Folksongs,Etudes,Mazurkas,Romanzas and even Variations which I liked most. They have really been arranged nicely and the Llobet himself composed beautifuly(they say Llobet opened a new period for the guitar music at the early 1900's; they are right.)
You can't find most of the pieces on other CD's they are really "rare" pieces and the affordible price makes the CD even more nice.
Most of the tracks are short about 1 or 2 minutes but the total playing time is OK that means there's a lot of track in it(41 tracks).
What about the guitarist.Lorenzo Micheli.I know much guitarist but I have heard Micheli with this CD.It's good to be me that I heard Micheli. He plays the guitar with his soul,so sweet guitar really. And also the technique is one of the factors that makes this CD amazing because without a good technique you can't hand over most of the tracks such as Repuesta.
It is certain that this music gives us a joy and "also" I didn't know Llobet composed such great works I means the listener gets informed about it.
1)GOOD COLLECTION
2)PRICE
3)GOOD GUITAR PLAYING
4)EXCITING AND ORIGINAL WORKS FOR GUITAR
...they are the reasons you should buy this CD.

Soul of Chant CD.......2007-01-13
A powerful spirit.......2005-10-14
According to scholar Patrick Kavanaugh, 'there are no parallels to chant in the history of music in terms of its longevity, importance or influence.' Chant is generally without regular beats or meters, so different communities will develop their own sense of the chant. Chant can be designated as syllabic or melismatic, meaning that each note will be a different syllable for the former, or extended melodies on the same syllable for the later. Most of what is commonly understood as chant is melismatic, and that is what is represented here on this disc.
Chant could be used to sing the Daily Offices, the biblical texts, and parts of the Mass. That is what is on this disc - there are five difference masses offered here, with the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei for each (the first three also have the addition of the Credo). Each Mass has different features. The first mass, 'Lux et origo', is one for the Easter season. 'Fons bonitatis' is a much more solemn chant setting. 'De angelis' is a very well-known setting, being used frequently. 'Cum jubilo' is a setting for the Blessed Virgin Mary, and 'Orbis factor' can be used for any Sunday in Ordinary time during the liturgical year.
The booklet included gives a brief description of how some of the chant has been studied, maintained or revived in different places, including the monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos, which is a recognised centre of scholarship and practice for chant.
This is a very powerful recording.
