Album Description

Chicago IX: Greatest Hits '69 - '74 was the band's first greatest hits collection. Originally released 30 years ago in November of 1975, it spent five weeks atop the Billboard album chart and has been certified four times platinum! Still to date, it is the biggest selling album of their career. Chicago IX features signature favorites the band still performs on tour today, such as "25 or 6 to 4", "Beginnings," "Saturday in the Park," "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is," and "Call On Me." It was the first Chicago album to feature pictures of the band on the cover, incorporated into their trademark logo. Chicago IX: Greatest Hits '69-74 completes Rhino's reissues of the band's signature early recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good selection.......2007-06-08

Having grown up in the 60 - 70's with this band, there is obviously nothing new or improved about the selections contained in this compilation. I pretty much purchased this CD just to have some Chicago music around should I care to listen.

As with a lot of music from decades past, this is not something I will listen to very often because of the "burn out" factor of hearing the songs so many times over the years. However, if someone were looking for a good cross section of Chicago hits, this would be the CD to purchase.

Chicago is definately a "superband" worthy of distinction even if over-played.

5 out of 5 stars Chicage Still Rocks.......2007-02-13

This CD is filled with great songs. It really took me back; and the sound quality was excellent. A new favorite!

4 out of 5 stars It's all good.......2007-02-09

I purchased this album on cassette during high school in the late 1970's to early 1980's. I have listened to it many times and I enjoy all of the songs. Recently the sound quality of my cassette has deteriorated significantly so I bought the CD. The quality is good and I enjoy all of the songs. My only complaint is that the price is relatively high for only 11 songs, but they are good ones.

5 out of 5 stars The title says it all!.......2007-02-07

Here is Chicago's ninth album overall featuring eleven previously released tracks from 1969 to '74 respectively. This album was originally released on the band's first label,Columbia in '75. DOES ANYBODY REALLY KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS? is the single/radio version(some stations have played the album track from the band's debut album released in 1969 or '70). The album version features a piano introduction which was deleted for this album. 25 OR 6 TO 4 soulfully rocks just like SATURDAY IN THE PARK,FEELIN' STRONGER EVERY DAY,MAKE ME SMILE,CALL ON ME and BEGINNINGS. COLOUR MY WORLD from CHICAGO II is a nice, easy listening piece featuring a piano, flute and light percussion. CMW was part of a series entitled "A Girl In Buchannon" on that album. Another soulful track is JUST YOU 'N ME. WISHING YOU WERE HERE and I'VE BEEN SEARCHIN' SO LONG are nice soft rock tunes also. Get a load of the band in the cover photo posing as a painting crew! An angry, elderly woman is trying to cut a rope supporting the crew's scaffold with a meat cleaver! Next to her is a cop ordering the crew to stop their work! If you own all of the preceding albums, you won't need this one.

5 out of 5 stars BASIC HITS COLLECTION, but all the "authentic" original mixes!.......2007-01-04

Take it from a actual former radio disc jockey, this CD is a five-star compilation of the early CHICAGO HITS. Lacks some of the "minor" early hits--most of which appear on the Greatest Hits Volume II--but delivers the time warp to the final days of AM Top-40 hit radio! Original, mostly "album" tracks with extended intros or tails. Remember those awful "radio edit" versions????

I'd have to say that in the last thirty odd years, this has to be one of the BEST greatest hits collections to ever hit the market and is a MUST HAVE for anybody with more than a passing interest in TOP 40 hits from the classic pre-disco pop era!

4 out of 5 stars He works magic in film........2007-03-25

Perhaps it is true that the work of Phillip Glass has been of ambiguous nature; many different subconsciousness that would be drawn to his music and many alike would be pulled back in similiar impact or just simply stand in plain confusion. His music works perfect for the medium of film, not because there is another medium 'filling up the void' in his style, but it's the commentary that it makes on the story while the film runs on its own. This music leaves much to the imagination of those filled with it, to tell their own story. It can handle almost anything one throws at it; irony, contradiction, pain, relief, comedic, anything, it will almost seem to work out well perfectly for certain individuals. Minimalism is a common label on this music, however it is precisely minimalism that leaves the mind to explore on its own. Classical greats like Bach, although in a similiar vein, still lay down the scenery in a more conspicuous manner than Glass. After all, this is contemporary art; and it will not work out well for those who do not have the audacity to create their own mental scenes but rather rely more on music for a more solid comprehension to come through.

5 out of 5 stars Glassworks is an amazing album.......2006-11-12

Although I'd heard of Philip Glass I was quite unaware of his music until I attended a performance of The Upper Room by the Washington Ballet in October 2006. The music is by Philip Glass and the choreography by Twyla Tharp. It was one of the most memorable artistic experiences of my life. It was incredible.

I subsequently purchased Glassworks and find the music to be extremely powerful. I recommend this album absolutely. I find most of the pieces on the album to be profoundly moving. The last movement from "The Upper Room" is especially powerful and significant.

2 out of 5 stars Great experiment of questionable musical value.......2006-01-30

Yes, arpeggios are great! Thank you, Philip. That is called harmony. But there also exists such thing as melody, you know. Maybe, you've heard of it. It's what some composers are famous for. I see that you know what it is. But you should definitely use it more often!

Let's start again... I absolutely love Opening. It's emotional, it's haunting, it's beautiful, and it's atmospheric. But what follows next... Really, Philip Glass could be a great etude composer. When I'm playing piano etudes, I'm always reminded of Glass' music. Some people say it's atmospheric, I say it's repetitive and boring. Hints of melody and style pierce the arpeggiated clouds on Island and Facades. But that's it.

If you want some good atmospheric minimalism, listen to Harold Budd or Brian Eno. If you want good post-modern influenced compositions, buy James Newton Howard's The Village score. You may want to buy Philip Glass' Glassworks if you can't live without the opening theme or want to find out what his music is about. I've found out. But right now I don't want to go any further...

5 out of 5 stars Love - Hate Relationship.......2006-01-17

Simply, the question is of the following: Is P. Glass one of the 20th century's most creative artists, lending a sublte poignancy to his pieces; or, on the other hand, is Glass merely the most overrated hack in classical music today, utilizing almost endlessly repeating arpeggios to the chagrin of the listener's ear (not to mention, patience)?

From my rating, I clearly fall into the first camp. However, the pleasure you will derive from this CD is undoubtedly personal and subjective, based upon both experience and taste. No doubt, the arguments on both side of the question are passionate and entrenched. I suggest, instead, that you listen to the tracks that Amazon provides. This will give you a sense as to whether you will love or hate the music.

As for my experience with the music, I agree with several fellow reviewers: Glass's methodology is wholeheartedly expressive, providing the composer with ample space to slowly build and play on different moods within the work, making the listener conscious of individual notes, instruments, and rhythms within the ensemble. The only thing I can think to compare this with is, perhaps, flavors. Either you can eat a piece of chocolate hurriedly and grasp the totality of its flavor; or you may calmly savor it and, perhaps, find a nice caramal center, unmask the interplay of various textures, and discover satisfaction in its simplicity.

Bear in mind, however, I approached Philip Glass after having a large exposure to Ravi Shankar and 'classical Indian' music. Some, not all, of the music is rhythmically repetitive. This experience, I think, predisposed me to liking Glass's compositions.

4 out of 5 stars A Few Words on Glassworks.......2005-12-21

In a joke email about the Mozart effect that a friend of mine recieved, the effect of several other composers' music on children was discussed as if it had an effect on the children like Mozart's music does. In "The Glass Effect", "a child tends to repeat him or herself over and over and over and over and over and over and over again." This is true, Glass's music, "Glassworks" in particular, is alarmingly repetitive. The reason that most people knock this set of pieces is because they are totally missing the point. Glass's music has been categorized in the realm of "minimalism." The point of minimalism is to do as much as possible with the least amount of music. Glass executes this agenda quite well with "Glassworks." Most people don't exactly realize what Glass is doing by repeating himself over and over again.

First of all people have to realize a few things about this music. Philip Glass did not intend on having this music being played in the background at your next dinner party. Leave that up to Bach and Mozart. What Glass did want with this piece was for mature listeners to realize what he has done with texture and simplicity. Also, Glass's works are not about melody. They are about texture and mood and atmosphere. Each piece has its own shape little additions keep the piece from becoming overly monotonous. I think that Glass has made a great musical statement with his set of pieces that should be carefully digested with an open mind.

For the most part, Glass's concept works. However, the second movement "Floe" could probably be axed or revised. This is the only movement that seems to get unbelivably monotonous. It's also a lot to digest at the beginning of the suite. If it came more towards the end before the closing as opposed to after the opening where it functions as more of a rhythmic pie in the face. Some of the movements could also stand to use a little more variation but for the most part, Glass keeps the pieces interesting.

I cannot say much about the other work, "In the Other Room" that appears on this album, because I own the original Glassworks album. I just wanted to clear up some of the misconceptions that many have about this different music. It's hard to say whether or not Glass's music will stand up to the same test of time as the music of the greats like Mozart's and Bach's, but things are not looking good for Glass, not because the music isn't good, but becuase too many ignorant people immediately dismiss it as garbage. It seems that if people openly knock this music like they do, the same people that put those parental advisory stickers on CDs might want to instigate a separate rating system. This one should be stickered with: "CDMA: Mature Audiences Only."

4 out of 5 stars Makes the best case for the band in 1 disc.......2005-06-28

Despite the protestations of some here, Chicago is essentially a singles band...their most realized, crystalline work was distilled into 3 and 4 minute blasts of jazz infused rock. This album, originally released in 1975, contains nearly all of their finest work.

There are a few cons to this:
"Old Days" was a #5 hit in 1975 and absolutely should have made the cut. I'm not certain why that was excluded unless it was to allow for "Beginnings", which runs nearly 8 minutes. Good as it is, "Feelin' Stronger Every Day" was an album cut and it should have been sacrificed to make room for "Old Days". "Hits" packages are chosen by commercial criteria, not artistic ones. "Best of" collections are where that distinction should be made.

Some other songs that hit the Top 40 are missing from the period ("Question 67 and 68","Free","Lowdown","Dialogue (Parts I and II)"), but they all charted outside the Top 10 so on that basis, the band assembled just about the strongest collection they could muster at that point in their career.

BOTTOM LINE:
The "horn rock" days of the band were their most satisfying artistically if not the chart juggernaut they would become in their adult contemporary pap 80s incarnation. If you only want 1 CD from them, this is the one. If you have more money to spend, get the 2CD "Only the Beginning" on Rhino Records (ASIN B000068ZVQ). It adds on the missing "Old Days", along with "I'm a Man","Baby, What a Big Surprise", "If You Leave Me Now", and "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" (probably the best of their 80s material).

5 out of 5 stars All the Early-Mid Great Stuff..........................2005-01-27

is here and this album is blissfully free of the nauseating puss that followed. Seldom in the history of Pop/Rock music has a group risen to the level of Chicago during 1968-1974, only to drop to the depths that they did later. The early stuff here is ageless. You won't miss the later stuff that anticipates dreck like Michael Bolton, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, etc.

4 out of 5 stars So many collections from which to choose!.......2004-10-20

Chicago were one of the most consistent hit makers of the 70s and 80s. In fact, Chicago is #18 on the list of Top 500 Artists of the rock era (see Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles"). This ranking means that they are the fifth biggest group, behind only The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, and The Temptations! Given their success, it's not surprising that they've released several greatest hits collections, starting with this record in 1975. This CD includes their first 9 Top 10 singles, as well as two additional hits.

25 or 6 to 4 (#4 in 1970)
Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? (#7 in 1971)
Color My World (flip of "Beginnings")
Just You 'n' Me (#4 in 1973)
Saturday in the Park (#3 in 1972 - the band's first gold single)
Feelin' Stronger Every Day (#10 in 1973)
Make Me Smile (#9 in 1970 - the band's first Top 10 single)
Wishing You Were Here (#11 in 1974)
Call on Me (#6 in 1974)
(I've Been) Searchin' So Long (#9 in 1974)
Beginnings (#7 in 1971)

These songs are great and much more varied than their latest music. I especially enjoy "Saturday in the Park," which features an upbeat Peter Cetera vocal playfully interweaving with the band's horn section. The melancholic "Colour My World" is another highlight. Over the years, the band released a few other compilations, starting with "Chicago - Greatest Hits: 1982-1989." These first two CDs, however, exclude their late 70s hits, such as "Old Days" (#5 in 1975), "Baby, What a Big Surprise" (#4 in 1977), and their first #1 song - "If You Leave Me Now" (#1 for 2 weeks in 1976). Fortunately in 2002, Chicago released the 2-disk, "The Very Best of Chicago: Only the Beginning," which includes hits from the entire span of their career and was clearly designed to replace their first two anthologies.

I own and like all three of these greatest hits collections. The one you decide to buy will likely depend greatly on how much you like Chicago and what period of their music you enjoy most. If you want a single CD set, then "Chicago IX - Greatest Hits" is my recommendation, as I enjoy their more adventurous 70s music over the glossier 80s ballads. On these songs, they are still the cutting-edge rock band that brilliantly incorporated jazz into rock. However, if you're willing to spend a few more bucks, then I'd highly recommend their 2-disk set.

3 out of 5 stars Dated Collection - but has the best stuff they did.......2004-08-06

"Chicago Greatest Hits" is actually "Chicago IX" if you keep track of Chicago's numeric naming of their albums. This was a greatest hits album that was released early in their careers and like many Greatest Hits albums that come out early, they often get dated when the band continues to have success. In the case of Chicago, the band would still have another 1/4 century of music ahead of them. Chicago might be the greatest and most innovative band not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame despite having Hall of Fame eligibility. The key to their legend is the innovative use of horns and woodwinds (thanks to unheralded band members Lee Loughnane, Jimmy Pankow, and Walt Parazaider) Despite this particular Greatest Hits collection being dated - it does cover the most creative period of Chicago. This contains selections that have the most innovative use of the horn section which form an aggressive rock sound what I call the "Chicago (band) Sound". Although the band would continue to have the use of a horns section in the later stages of their career, the band would slowly transform into an adult contemporary and love ballads band.

There are other collections that will probably give you a more complete. For example, the set "The Very Best of Chicago: Only the Beginning" contains every song on this collection plus a good selection of their material that would follow in the 25 years after the release of "Chicago Greatest Hits". "The Best of Chicago" and "The Best of Chicago Volume 2" are two separate CDs that between the 2, include all of the material on this CD. "Chicago - Group Portrait" is a more complete collection while the boxed set "Chicago - The Box" will provide the most complete library. The important thing to note is this CD has a good chunk of the band's early career. Another thing to point out is that this CD takes songs from the first 8 albums of Chicago's career, but it ignores Chicago III, Chicago Live at Carnegie Hall (IV), and Chicago VIII. There are some nice songs that are also missing from the other CDs, such as "Where Do we Go From Here", and "I'm a Man". While it may seem that you could go easily elsewhere in the Chicago library and find the selections on this CD, it is worth noting there are 11 songs on the collection. Keep in mind that this album was released in 1975 and an 11 song album (without being a double album) was not especially common during that time.

The songs themselves speak for themselves - these are legendary songs and need no introduction. They are: "25 or 6 to 4", "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is", "Colour My World", "Just You and Me", "Saturday in the Park", "Feelin Stronger Every Day", "Make Me Smile", "Call on Me", "(I've Been) Searchin So Long", and "Beginnings". The ordering of the song does disappoint me as well. The songs are basically mixed up with no logical order. I usually prefer my greatest hits to be in chronlogical order. (It is ironic that the song "Beginnings" is the last song)

There are some very interesting facts to consider. The great songs on this collection had three different singers - Robert Lamm, Terry Kath, and Peter Cetera. Another amazing fact is that the band didn't have a number one single until the late 1980s with"Chicago 19"'s "Look Away" (almost 20 years into their careers) - yet this was probably Many say that it is the late Terry Kath who was the champion of the "Chicago Sound" and once he passed away in 1978, the balance of power started to shift to the likes of Peter Cetera who would begin to transform them into a ballads band.

The "Chicago Greatest Hits" CD has some real poor liner notes. The band members are listed - there are little in the way of production credits. I know many of the band members play multiple instruments depending on the song - I still would have liked to have seen this included. No lyrics are included. A nice thing is that the original album for each of the 'greatest hits' is listed. Normally, I would have given this 2 stars - but there is some good quality material on here and probably contains the best stuff the band did. My advice would be to only pick this album up if you can get it at a significant discount - otherwise look at some of the more recent compilations or boxed sets the band has done. You probably will get more value for your money.

5 out of 5 stars Still The Best Collection...........2004-05-13

This album still holds as the best single disc retrospective of this great band. The songs feel as strong today (May 12, 2004) as they did on my vinyl records over 25 years ago. And with all the "used" product out there you can get it at a great price. Plus, Terry Kath is one of the most under-rated rock guitarist ever (Terry, say hi to Jimi for me). Rock on!

5 out of 5 stars You've never heard "The Godfather" like this.......2003-08-13

For me the highlight of this disc is a short suite from "Rocco and His Brothers," with some pungent accordion work and 1950's jazz influences. This is glorious and rarely performed music, and conductor Riccardo Muti and the fine La Scala musicians should be thanked for presenting it so beautifully. (The film itself, available on DVD, is one of Visconti's best and well worth seeking out.) But there isn't a stale moment anywhere.

The melancholy themes from "The Godfather" have probably never been played so well. The famous opening trumpet solo, combining loneliness and menace in equal parts, is beautifully done, as are the relatively upbeat selections from "8-1/2" and "La Dolce Vita." Throughout the production, it is marvelous to hear these scores played with such passion and commitment, and the La Scala musicians sound sweepingly involved.

But for many listeners the highlight will be the dazzling and haunting waltzes from "The Leopard," with their melodic arcs echoing the grand scale of Visconti's masterpiece. This is truly evocative film writing.

An excellent introduction to Rota's music, played with suave intensity by one of the best conductors in the world. (For those interested, Muti and La Scala recorded another Rota CD with additional dances from "The Leopard," as well as music from "La Strada" and the "Concerto for Strings" -- also highly recommended.)

5 out of 5 stars Italian Scala and Muti feels Rota!.......2001-07-25

Perhaps this is the most powerfull collection of film music of Nino Rota, and Muti knows and feel this music. Splendid perfomance and sound.

5 out of 5 stars Music that stays in your heart and mind.......2005-08-26

I really enjoy listening to this album. I love music composed during the Romantic Era (Composers such as Chopin, Rachmaninov, Borodin etc...) However, I may not like all of Borodin's works but this album is just perfect. It has the best of those composers. Good music to listen to when you're away on a vacation/retreat to just get away from the busyness of life.

5 out of 5 stars Great Addition to My Collection.......2006-10-29

Jordie Savall and Hesprion XX do it again. I've yet to hear a CD of his that I didn't love. Most of my collection of 15th-17th Century music is English, French, German, and Italian, and I am happy to see the Spanish masters taking their place alongside them.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25

'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.

I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29

Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.

5 out of 5 stars Indisputable Gallic flair.......2004-06-06

These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.

4 out of 5 stars Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12

This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.

2 out of 5 stars the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05

This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

5 out of 5 stars A superb interpretation of Llobet's music.......2006-10-30

I had come across L. Micheli almost accidentally by watching one of the Guitar Foundation of America videos when I was amazed by the breathtaking performance of the Variaciones sobre un tema de Sor! This CD is worth every penny. I would also recommend the M Castelnuovo Tedesco one as well. Very expressive, accurate, clean performance - I had the feeling I am watching Glenn Gould playing guitar.

5 out of 5 stars EXCITING MUSIC.......2006-03-25

I have found this CD at the Naxos website catalogue.I was just looking around the CD's and the word LLOBET got my attention because it was hard to find a complete collection of the composer.I was lucky that it caught my attention!
Let's come to the inside of it.It has all kind of music forms composed by llobet such as;Catalan Folksongs,Preludes,Folksongs,Etudes,Mazurkas,Romanzas and even Variations which I liked most. They have really been arranged nicely and the Llobet himself composed beautifuly(they say Llobet opened a new period for the guitar music at the early 1900's; they are right.)
You can't find most of the pieces on other CD's they are really "rare" pieces and the affordible price makes the CD even more nice.
Most of the tracks are short about 1 or 2 minutes but the total playing time is OK that means there's a lot of track in it(41 tracks).
What about the guitarist.Lorenzo Micheli.I know much guitarist but I have heard Micheli with this CD.It's good to be me that I heard Micheli. He plays the guitar with his soul,so sweet guitar really. And also the technique is one of the factors that makes this CD amazing because without a good technique you can't hand over most of the tracks such as Repuesta.
It is certain that this music gives us a joy and "also" I didn't know Llobet composed such great works I means the listener gets informed about it.
1)GOOD COLLECTION
2)PRICE
3)GOOD GUITAR PLAYING
4)EXCITING AND ORIGINAL WORKS FOR GUITAR
...they are the reasons you should buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars An Uplifting and Amazing Work.......2007-07-29

Brubeck's Mass setting using his signature 5/4 time is a successful marriage of traditional and contemporary, worship and celebration. The "Alleluia" alone is an incredible musical achievement. Brubeck her is clearly God's instrument - and a rare and virtuoso instrument he is!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful choral work + great jazz.......2007-02-09

This music may throw some people for a loop, as it did me at first, because it is a choral Mass and most of us don't realize that Dave composed choral pieces, with his wife doing the lyrics. This Mass was commissioned by 'Our Sunday Visitor' many years ago. It is absolutely beautiful! The operatic choral sections move into the jazz sections and are truly inspirational. My favorite songs are 'the Desert and the Parched Land/The Peace of Jerusalem' and 'All My Hope', which I can't get out of my head all day! Give them a listen.

2 out of 5 stars Lackluster Effort.......2004-05-05

I was very disappointed in this CD. This piece in no way compares with Brubeck's "Gates of Justice", which is spectacular. There are a few worthwhile moments for the soloists, but for the most part, the writing is uninspired.

4 out of 5 stars A Worthy Effort.......2002-07-23

"To Hope!" is Dave Brubeck's attempt at composing a mass, or Christian liturgy. The result is mixed. Unlike Vince Guaraldi's masterpiece "Grace Cathedral Concert," this is not a jazz piano mass. Instead, it is largely a contemporary-classical work, focused on vocals and traditional arrangements. It does, however, include several jazz passages, including one that swings almost like a '50s surf-rock record. Not everyone will like this recording, but every fan of jazz or contemporary sacred music should listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars A Celebration of Dave Brubecks Works.......2000-03-15

This CD truly shows the diversity of the genius composer Dave Brubeck. Also credit should to be given to Russell Gloud, the conductor for this CD. This working is one of the greatest pieces by Mr. Brubeck. I recommend this CD to any classical music or jazz fan

5 out of 5 stars Soul of Chant CD.......2007-01-13

5 out of 5 stars A powerful spirit.......2005-10-14

One of the remarkable things about this CD of chant is that it was done by the monks of the Benedictine community of Santo Domingo de Silos decades before their CD simply entitled 'Chant' would take the world by storm. These chants were recorded in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and preserved (not in the best of conditions) by the abbey; the recordings had deteriorated and had to be restored. This makes this recording all the more remarkable, for one can hear the resonance and small details, the subtle accompaniment of the organ (not always a feature for chant, but here as a drone of sorts in the back establishing a base tone, or occasionally going up and down with the monks), and even background noise from around the abbey.

According to scholar Patrick Kavanaugh, 'there are no parallels to chant in the history of music in terms of its longevity, importance or influence.' Chant is generally without regular beats or meters, so different communities will develop their own sense of the chant. Chant can be designated as syllabic or melismatic, meaning that each note will be a different syllable for the former, or extended melodies on the same syllable for the later. Most of what is commonly understood as chant is melismatic, and that is what is represented here on this disc.

Chant could be used to sing the Daily Offices, the biblical texts, and parts of the Mass. That is what is on this disc - there are five difference masses offered here, with the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei for each (the first three also have the addition of the Credo). Each Mass has different features. The first mass, 'Lux et origo', is one for the Easter season. 'Fons bonitatis' is a much more solemn chant setting. 'De angelis' is a very well-known setting, being used frequently. 'Cum jubilo' is a setting for the Blessed Virgin Mary, and 'Orbis factor' can be used for any Sunday in Ordinary time during the liturgical year.

The booklet included gives a brief description of how some of the chant has been studied, maintained or revived in different places, including the monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos, which is a recognised centre of scholarship and practice for chant.

This is a very powerful recording.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best gregorian chant records.......2003-05-23

This is an excellent gregorian chant record, despite the fact that it was originally registered in the late 1950's, early 1960's; I would even dare to say, it is one of the best gregorian chant records I have ever listened. The quietness, the peacefulness and the clearness (every word sung is totally perceptible by the listener) that the monks of Santo Domingos de Silos Monastery put on their performance (if is possible to call perfomance to an act of pure prayer...) is simply a superb joy for the soul. I would point out the "Credo" played in the thirteenth track: absolutely fantastic!
