5 out of 5 stars Upper percentile of (pigeon hole coming) Chill Genre.......2006-11-11

This guy does not have the industry, spin, and following of genre masters like thievery company, but this is every bit as good. However you characterize this music it is in the top 5% the genre. If you like Zero 7, thievery company, air supply, or radiohead, then you will like this. Other reviewers have done a good job of describing the technical quality...I couldn't do that anyway. The used price reflects the current market value of the music.

5 out of 5 stars Great chilled groove CD.......2003-03-19

This CD is great for a myriad of occasions - it's the perfect type of background music, but can be in the "spotlight", too. It's ambient in the way that while you're listening, you feel like you should be watching a really cool movie - perfect soundtrack music. But it's also "groove" because you can't help but want to move your body to the beat at many occasions when listening.

I have listened to this CD many, many times and honestly am NOT at all tired of it. It's a true "classic" for me because it never gets old - I continue to discover more interesting elements every time I hear it. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Full of images and smooth, solid grooves.......2002-11-20

Uplift Drift, is a cinematic journey that "Lifts you up and takes you higher" Full of images and smooth, solid grooves that transport the listener to a place where you have the freedom to lean back and float or get up and move to the ambient groove.

This CD is very good in the audio sense also... Clean tight mixes, an obvious amount of work went into the recordings presented here. Terms like "attention to detail" come to mind. It seems a lot of attention was also paid to the psyco-acoustic realm, where sound images drift in, out and past the listener during their journey. Check this one out on headphones !!

The orchestration and rhythms are top notch and totally original. I think Magic Sound Fabric has carved out a signature sound here. Working in a genre where there is precious little "Dub" oriented music that smoothly blends elements of Ambient, Reggae, Experimental Electronic and good old Space Music, I would think this CD is poised for major exposure and acceptance in an otherwise cluttered music industry.

The CD features full art work and professional packaging unlike many indie artists. The label, Spiralight, has really pulled out all the stops in quality indie music distribution. I hope to see it grow as well.

All in all, Uplift Drift is a valued addition to any CD collection regardless of musical taste, but especially to those of us who enjoy good electronic music!

After seeing them live, almost any album would be a let down. I recommend seeing them play live, it is a great show. They haven't learned how to make a good album yet, and it shows. They sound a lot like Coldplay with some Third Day thrown in. The first and last tracks are standouts ("please" and "everything is ok") but they are weak up the middle. Don't spend a bunch on the CD, but it's worth it at a low price. I think they will be very good with time and another album

I was first introduced to this band when they opened for Wide Mouth Mason last year. I was immediately blown away, and picked up a CD after the show.

The album is a very strong debut, with lots of catchy songs, and some wonderful guitar work. Be sure to check out "Falling Into You" and "Usual to Me" - you'll be hooked.

          Product Description

Very few artists are able to cause a stir like the notorious electro duo known as Femme Fatality. Since Spring of 2003, Monanani Palermo and Octavia Leito have simultaneously brought out the best from the kids and the worst from the confused naysayers (who happen to be dancing-impaired). It's no wonder that the Riverfront Times (St. Louis' weekly publication) named them one of the "Top Ten Must-See Bands" in the Summer of 2004. Femme Fatality's dark pop sensability mixed with hip-hop style beats and indie rock synth melodies create the ultimate dance party. Playing alongside artists ranging from The Rapture to Felix Da Housecat and back again, the duo use costumes, lighting, and video montage to draw the crowd into their dark and deliciously dirty nightlife. Femme Fatality's infectious electro beats whip the kids hips into a frenzy and leave them chanting lyrics as if it were an anthem rock ballad.

This CD is highly recomended the grandeure of the work is done perfecly by the wallace collections and the polyphony itself. The most dramatic recording of anthems of rutter, happy to listen too a happy recording.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet but sturdy.......2001-07-02

The music of John Rutter consistently provokes mixed reactions amongst musical circles. There are those who cannot stand it, seeing it as tasteless and even annoying; some enjoy certain aspects of his output but do not love it all; some can find nothing but praise for it. As one who has performed various works and arrangements of his, I feel that it certainly can be overly 'saccharine' in the light of the other serious classical music being written today - yet it is unfailingly well-written, offering genuine challenges to those who perform it. And beyond all the sugary melodies and soupy harmonies, Rutter is capable of producing moments of real heart-wrenching emotion. Indeed, it says much of him that he can create memorable, 'hummable' tunes in an age wherein such a skill is perhaps looked upon as anachronistic.

It certainly says much of Rutter that this is now the second disc that the elite Hyperion company have devoted entirely to his music. Those who know and love his "Requiem" through its many commercially-available recordings will recognise many similar elements in "Gloria," obviously a more exubrant and joyful concert work, which is presented here with an effective scoring for organ, brass and percussion. It is at a glance reminiscent of a concerto, with three movements (two loud and fast ones, sandwiching a slower central movement) and recurring themes that are tossed between chorus and accompaniment. The opening is immediately characteristic of Rutter: the combined rhythms and fanfare-like motifs make it sound almost like the opening to some hit musical, and contrast is provided by utterances of unaccompanied chorus in which harmony is the most interesting element. The second movement - "Domine Deus" - features a gently undulating, flute-like solo from the organ, which is worked through gentle brass chorales and beautifully crafted sung passages, with a genuinely moving use of solo sopranos and altos. The third movement - "Quoniam tu solus sanctus" - brings back the boppy nature of the first movement, and quite startlingly includes what appears to be a fugue in the chorus parts! As a whole, it is easy to see why this work is not perhaps as popular as the "Requiem," but it is no less full of worthwhile things to listen out for.

The rest of the disc is made up of various church pieces, several of which are widely used as church anthems throughout England and beyond - "As the bridegroom to his chosen" and "Thy perfect love" are especially popular for their memorable tunes. Two of the unaccompanied works are quite arresting: "Come down, O love Divine," with its echoes of Herbert Howells and 'open ended' concluding cadence, and the tiny "Clare Benediction," dating from Rutter's time as Director of Music at that Cambridge College Chapel - for this, he provided his own text and the result is as potent as any large-scale choral masterpiece could be. There are also a few that are less well-known, and indeed one which has only recently been premiered - "I my Best-Beloved's am," first performed by Polyphony under Stephen Layton. These pieces (with the exception of "Praise the Lord, O my soul" and "Te Deum," which are accompanied by the same forces as in "Gloria") feature Rutter's own orchestrations, which can either heighten or ruin their effectiveness, depending upon your point of view - I was hoping to hear these with organ accompaniment, as they would be heard in a typcial church service. On the other hand, these arrangements show a fine sense of orchestral colour and demonstrate Rutter's penchant for making his music as useful as possible to all manner of performers, whether they specialise in the church or the concert platform.

Polyphony make light work of this programme. The works with organ, brass and percussion, recorded in the generous but subtle acoustics of Winchester Cathedral, suffer slightly from a poor balance: I am surprised that Hyperion were unable to save the choir from being drowned in the loudest and most climactic moments, wherein we lose not only the words but (nearly!) the voices themselves. Then again, the problem might also have been solved by augmenting the choir with extra singers - Polyphony is after all a chamber choir, whereas "Gloria" was clearly intended for choral societies with hundreds of massed voices. The anthems fare much better: recorded in the dry acoustics of a London church, supported by the small but potent forces of the City of London Sinfonia, Polyphony really get to the heart of these pieces. Stephen Layton directs well too - fast pieces are treated with vigour whereas the slower and more intimate ones are allowed to 'breathe' in a natural way that avoids sounding "hammy."

If you're approaching Rutter for the first time, I wouldn't recommend starting with this disc; the "Requiem" is a far better work to begin with. However, if you're already a 'Rutterphile,' then there is no reason to hesitate: this makes for rewarding listening.

            5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2001-06-15

Being a fan of John Rutter, I found this new recording, on Hyperion label, of the Gloria and sacred music, one of the best yet. The choir and orchestra are to be commended on the delicate and yet vibrant performance. The Polyphony choir, though only consisting of about 25 voices, produces a powerful and well rounded sound. I really enjoyed this recording and it was great to hear a few new anthems. The sound was very clear and the choir's annunciation was well articulated, so that you hear every word. I have most of his works and a great admirer of the Cambridge Singers, though I will put this Hyperion recording there, right next to John Rutter's choir. I was pleased to hear that the organ, especially in the Gloria and Te Deum could be clearly heard, but not dominating the voices or the orchestra. A very balanced sound throughout. The Wallace Collection, added to the City of London Sinfonia, gave that very `Ruttorian' brassy sound. Very impressive! This wonderful recording is a real joy to listen to. Bravo!!!

This is a solid work but much poppier and radio friendly than their previous works. Lyrically it is their darkest but most cohesive work. Every song thematically blends into the next as the songs focus on dysfunctional and destructive relationships the irony surrounding the human willingness to surrender ourselves to such things when one knows better. But sex is as much of an escape as drugs and this dysfunctional love is one addictive opiate in most of the songs. In some ways this album is a musical document of life as a Gen Xer as much as Douglas Coupland's novel Generation X.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD for anyone's collection!!.......2003-01-09

...I purchased the CD just for [a] particular song, but ended up liking the entire thing. Each track is a bit different, but they've all got good vocals and excellent music to them. In particular, I've taken a liking to the final track on the album, "Bring you Down." The song is a perfect conclusion to the album, with outstanding guitar and only enough vocals as is necessary. More would take away from the music, while less would probably devalue the song as a whole.

For the price, anyone that even remotely likes the samples should purchase this CD.... This is an outstanding album, and well worth the price whether new or used. Get it while you can and wherever you can.

            4 out of 5 stars A worthy follow-up to "Ten-Speed".......1999-02-23

While not as good as its predecessor, "Headfirst into Everything" is jam packed with the teenage angst that makes Canadian indie pop do darn popular. The guitar is a little heavier than in "Ten Speed", the lyrics just as good and the vocals are as good as it gets. This is a welcome relief from such lyrically challenged bands like Eve6 and the GooGoo Dolls.
