DJ Mampi Swift, the man behind Charge Recordings and a proper up and coming Drum n Bass legend in his own right, touches down with the follow up release to the Ganja Kru’s well embraced first installment of the Darklight series. Swift is a key player in the UK’s current D&B scene due to his distinctive style. Throughout this year he will be seen at every major UK festival including Gatecrasher, Reading & the Notting Hill Carnival. He has received worldwide, critical acclaim for his Mainframe album release and a for his top notch 12"s on the True Playaz, Frontline, and Suburban Base imprints. Now, Swift graces us with his deckmanship once again, showcasing his now infamous "swift and intense" DJ-ing skills on this fiercely, storming mix CD. Powerful and moving!
However, I cannot tell if this release is Melodic Black Metal or Melodic Death Metal; it hints at both. Sure, nobody's going to confuse their sound with Dissection (melodic Black Metal) and nobody's going to confuse their sound with At The Gates (Melodic Death Metal.) The voice of the singer is death metal, the production is death metal, and some of the guitar lines are death metal. However, it hints at something greater, has melodies akin to many black metal bands (in addition to the slew of bm tremolo picked lines), and the drumming style is more like Mayhem or early Dimmu Borgir, than, say, Entombed. The guitars are not necessarily Death Metal guitars, but are easily distinguishable from Black Metal guitars; the guitar sound, instead of blending into an atmospheric dreamscape (Black Metal), they are articulated and technical. Again, however, they are constant and have a relatively ambient feel, as opposed to the well-articulated and distinguishable organization of Death Metal. So, this release may be a bit hard for Death Metal fans to swallow; they might find it a bit too atmospheric for their tastes, whereas elitist Black Metal fans might scoff at the Death Metal tendancies of this release, and view it as not grim or dark enough. Personally, I don't care. Good DM release? I don't know. Good BM release? I don't know that either. Good release on it's own merits? Yes, definitely, and, as I said earlier in this review, I look forward to more releases from the German Dawn Of Dreams.

Pretty good Melodic BM.......2004-11-10
