Customer Reviews:
This is Clutch! .......2007-03-19
I own all of Clutch's albums. But this one is still my favorite.
It is the perfect mix of Rock Metal & grove. It's like what Monster Magnet did to Acid Rock.
This is high quality smoking grooves with a touch of the South. I have never grown tired of this one.
Every track is outstanding. And I think it is one of the better produced & focused efforts from the boys.
Great music.......2006-11-16
I discovered Clutch this past summer. I can't believe I missed out on the band for so long. Beast Tyrant is one of the best rock cds ever made. It grabs you from the start with Mercury, kicks into gear with Profits of Doom and Mob Goes Wild, and doesn't let up after that. There is not a weak song here. If you are looking at this, you are at least interested in Clutch. Buy this record. You will not be disappointed.
Great.......2006-07-18
Definitely my favorite Clutch CD. More cohesive and infectious than the rest of their albums. It just rocks from the word go and doesn't quit. Probably their most "rock" album. The lyrics are more straightforward and not as trippy as the rest of their albums. A lot of times on their other albums I just can't figure out what he is singing about. If you like their other albums you love this one.
Clutch sets standards in rock!!.......2006-06-24
Another amazing collection of songs by this great band. Unmatched at times, always great.
While playing Blast Tyrant, at times you wanna bang your head, then take out you dancing shoes, then close your eyes and absorb the moods streaming over you. Songs like Profits, Cypress Grove and Ghost are all 'pure rock fury', but still so diverse.
This is one cd I just can play over and over and over .... at any time or any mood I'm in. This is one of the very few bands that NEVER dissapoints.
Also, Clutch is by far the best live rock 'act' I have seen in my live.
This is a no brainer ..... BUY!!
Clutch by Fate.......2006-05-24
I got Blast Tyrant out of the Library by accident. Uploaded it to my ipod and the first song I hear was Worm Drink. I have a lot of crap on my ipod, so I had to see what this was, and it was Clutch. I vaguely remembered them from the "drop that mic" song back in 2001. Damn, there is some good stuff on this album! I love it so much, I am here buying my own copy so I can give the library their copy back! I love it so much I checked out the only other Clutch album our library has (Robot Hive/Exodus) and came here to buy that too!
I forgot what good hard rock sounded like. Clutch is hard, but has a funny sense of humor too. Other favorite tracks are Profits of Doom, Cypress Grove, The Mob Goes Wild, Subtle Hustle, La Curandera, Ghost, and, oh never mind, they are all good! It's like nothing you have heard in a long time and it's awesome.

Amazon.com essential recording
Don't get too comfortable with this disc's opening minutes, which sound convincingly like a well-tuned consort of viols performing two short pieces by Machaut and Tye. These two works from the 14th and 16th centuries quickly give way to a piece from 1997 by David Lamb. Then come Arvo Part, Harry Partch, John Cage, and even Moondog, a.k.a. Louis Hardin. Additional instruments come and go- -harmonium, bagpipe, zhong ruan, nyckelharpa, drum--all of which complement and enhance the string sounds. Later, we hear music by Hildegard von Bingen, Perotin, and even Purcell. Most of the selections from early composers are arrangements by the Kronos Quartet and others, but it's a tribute to the recording's producers that in spite of the music's diversity, everything works together to make a coherent, cohesive, intellectually, and musically challenging program. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
one of their best.......2005-04-14
If you like simple, string quartet music as much as I do, then you've got to listen to this. It is a generous 68 minutes of plaintive music--no discontinuities and surpises like on their Black Angels recording. It is all slow and mournful.
I loved this CD!.......2002-11-02
When I was listening to MSN I came across it. I love Early Music and they had a Radio station that was playing it. I decided to listen to it. So as I was lisitening to it I came across the song Collected Songs Where Every Verse Is Filled With Grief. That is the besty song I ever heard in a long time. I like the other songs but this one really spoke to me. It was quite moving if I might say.
Not as early as you might think.......2000-06-07
Yes, there is "old" music on this disc. But works in olden style by John Cage, Arvo Part, et al are also present. Quite a challenging program on the listener - but rewarding as well. I am particularly found of Kronos' setting of Alfred Shnittke's "Collected Songs Where Every Verse is Filled With Grief". Very eclectic recording performed with usual finesse of the Kronos Quartet - and some guests.
Pleonastic.......2000-03-10
Kronos Quarter has been an agile and versatile instrument in the hands of modern composers. It has (re)interpreted music from many sources in a coherent way, thus creating a very distinctive sound. This album offers a mixed program of composers, juxtaposing the modern and the antique. The thesis of the album is (I think) that early composers are surprisingly palatable to modern sensibilities, and that they are close in spirit to a vast array of contemporary musicians. Also, it seems that the bond linking all these authors is a certain state of affliction; hence the subtitle of the album "lachrymae antiquae", ancient tears. Yet, overall, I found this a pretentious album, even in its use of latin. After so many years of philologically accurate renditions of the early masters, performed on period intruments, the operation of K.Q. sounds at least inappropriate if not even a bit obnoxious. It often seems that they are sacrificing the original intentions of the authors to the altar of this "modernity" thesis. The listener should judge by him/herself.
Summing up, I would just say that this is first of all a K.Q. album "inspired by" early music. I would just point out that it doesn't add much to the understanding neither of Machaut & co., nor of K.Q., which is still a great ensemble.
a good one.......1999-12-02
Who can say, as of now, how much of the music the KQ plays will fall, deservedly or not, by the wayside and how much of it will continue for the ages? At any rate, this CD is rewarding. I like the mix of quirky pieces with the staid, even if the title "Early Music" is misleading (since few original instruments are utilized in this record). Fine work; highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Quality kills........2007-03-03
The quality on this album is incredibly bad and pretty much ruins the whole thing. The instrumentals are okay and overall a lot of the songs have a nice symphonic sound, but the vocals are drowned out almost COMPLETELY by everything else. Sometimes I didnt even know if he was singing or I was just hearing a random sound put into the album. I dont think I'll buy anymore Emperor albums, since this was my first- but if I do, I'm going to make sure the quality isnt this bad.
I do love the cover art though!
Why did I bother?.......2007-01-28
This was an impulsive purchase to complete my Emperor discography. Yet, I highly recommend avoiding this at all costs or at least hearing it first before making my mistake. Some people love a production that is so poor you can't make out anything worthwhile, I'm not one of them. The entire disc sounds like it was recorded on a 4 track, the vocals are too loud, the drums sound like a drum machine, the guitars you can't make out other than that strange barely audible buzzing through each track.
AVOID AVOID AVOID.
I'm so thankful this band progressed to much greater heights than this.
eh, the qualty kills it.......2006-05-08
i am not a big guy on quality of albums, and it usually doesnt bother me. however, with this one, i cant even listen to it, its just in my collection for the hell of it. the wrath of the tyrant demo (or first 4 songs) are actually pretty good, but nothing special.
Good Album.......2005-12-30
Good Album, it was recorded on a 4 track so dont expect quality like I.T.N.S.E or A.T.T.W.A.D cds from emperor... its gritty and buzzy but its just like the classic black metal albums... but i love that sound so i give it 5 stars

Classic.......2005-06-24
Not under 13, this Cd has such classics as I Am the Black Wizards, and Towards the Pantheon. Isahn delivers yet again with fast brutal vocals, fast pommeling drums by trym, and the keyboards are as melodic as they have always been. Great CD, any metal fan should buy. i gave it 5 stars because of such poor ratings, overall it's a 4.5, other than that it's great

Customer Reviews:
Good performance of good music.......2002-04-05
I find less to criticize than others in this music and performance. If you know MacDowell, you know the kinds of things to expect from these songs. Not great music, but still beautiful genteel songs. MacDowell lets the lyricism flow smoothly. Most of the songs float along in the 6/8 rhythm MacDowell used so often. Concentrating on the melodic line, some of the occasional awkwardly thorny harmonies you can find in his miniatures fade into the background. Indeed, some may think the piano is too far in the background here. Too bad, because the late James Barbagallo obviously had quite a gift for MacDowell interpretation. Check out his recordings of MacDowell's solo piano works. What of tenor Tharp? Some may find his voice a little too thin, with a bit too much vibrato. But I say the songs are well sung regardless. Maybe the problem is that the songs really required a woman's voice. But what's done is done. These complete songs needed to be recorded, and this performance quite adequate, reservations notwithstanding. Over all, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this recording.
Tepid music, tepid performances.......2000-03-26
I'm sorry to have to say it, but this recording contains music that is undistinguished in performances that are competent only. The music is Grieg-and-water. The American tenor's voice is light-weight and charmless. The pianist is excellent. You can't beat the price, though, if you really want to hear this repertoire.

Refreshingly variating techno trance.......2006-05-21
It's hard to find good electronic music if you're not the kind of person who just wants to party and get high. I'm talking about musicians/composers who actually USE their instruments to their potential, and avoid compositional laziness (like reusing riffs and samples, standard bass lines, etc.).
Seriously, this CD is a mixed collection of some of the finest electronic music around. Just enough repitition to create that cyclic feeling, but just enough variation to keep things *very* interesting. Original sounds, no cheesy borrowed material, just good solid writing. I am a *very* picky music listener (I used to go into CD shops, gather a 20-high stack of CD from artists I either knew directly or genre's of music I liked, and end up liking *maybe* one CD (if I was lucky). This kind of endorsement does not come lightly.
You will not be dissapointed with this CD.
These guys know how to par-tay.......2003-04-26
Do you like tribalistic soulful House music?
Do you like to shake it down and par-tay?
If you answered yes to at least one of the above grab this, grab some friends, turn up the bass, turn down the lights, shake yer body and blow your mind!!!
This double cd album doesn't just contain House but a magical fusion of that, Break Beat, Electro and Dub...oooh
Note. These dudes don't mix a disc each but in fact work in harmony on each...and to great effect!
Great selections and tip top mixing.

Album Description
Tyrant and Fabric - two names that need no introductions - are known throughout the world as leading dance music icons. Tyrant - Craig Richards and Lee Burridge - has always been on the cutting edge with their chugging deep techy house, sublime breakbeat, and funky beats. Fabric on the other hand is undoubtedly one of the best clubs in the world and Craig Richards' Saturday residency has become a major part of Fabric's history.
As one of the most respected DJs, Craig Richards plays a wide variety of styles from nu breaks, to house, progressive house, and breakbeat. His sets at Fabric's main room every Saturday night are legendary where he keeps club goers on their feet all night.
On this latest addition to the Fabric series, we will be bringing you a 2-CD mix from Tyrant. The double disc set, programmed and mixed by Craig, will represent the variety of music and beats he plays, and it will also represent the sounds of the artists who play at Tyrant. If you've never had the opportunity to visit Fabric on a Saturday night, this will be your chance to experience Tyrant in its fullest!

so-so.......2006-01-04
It could be better. Disc 1 is only good on tracks 5 and 6, and is to housey on the rest. Disc 2 has too many annoying breakbeat/drum'n'bass style basslines. Both discs have their good parts, but you have to wade through to munch junk to be worth it. A mix should be good from beginning to end, and with my tastes, Tyrant doesn't cut it.
brilliant.......2005-03-18
craig richards delivered the opening cd to the fabric series with the superb fabric 1. this is nothing like the first, but its just as good. disc 1 is comprised mainly of tech-house, "schaffel" beats, and minimal grooves. superbly mixed, and some great tracks. for me, the real treat is cd2, a collection of quirky, experimental techno, idm, and some filthy electro tracks in the middle. highlights are the 2nd track on 2 (i forget the name,) texas - put your arms around me, and the hypnotic track #14 buy it-you won't regret it
excellent cd.......2005-01-14
if you are into dirty underground house music then this cd is definately for you, a great track selection of tech and acid house tracks, one of my favourite cds

Album Details
Tyrant is the DJ Duo of Craig Richards and Lee Burridge, who Operate as a Team in the Booth, Resulting in a Most Distinct Mix Previously Unheard. While Other Mix Discs Might Split Chores Between Two Different Jocks, Tyrant Are Very Much a Solid Unit.

Just to answer your question..........2004-04-15
Lee and Craig did a rare thing and teamed up on both disks. Unlike the unsaul arangement of one mixing the first disk, and the other doing the chore on the second, they mixed each disk together working on track selection and final mixing/mastering.
best of 2002.......2003-10-01
cd 1 one was favorite compilation disc of the last 2 years. dubby, trippy house and breaks. i actually copied these cd's from my friends. I was wondering if anyone could tell me who mixes each disc? I think craig has the first and lee the second. let me know. thanks!
Take a Chill Pill.......2002-06-05
If you into chilling and taking it easy then this is freakin' great. This is especially killer right before your getting your groove on, put on Tyrant 2 and your sure to score with your lady or the girl you have paid for an hour. I'm personally more a Craig Richards fan, he does a solid job mixing back and forth some laid-back tunes. Definitely worth your time.
A great compilation.......2002-06-04
I've been a fan of most of these DJ's (Lee is the bomb) for quite some time now. This CD doesn't disappoint...its still worth the wait if you don't live by a cool enough record shop that carries the CD. Some of these mixes I have not even heard before and I consider myself a elctronic music elitist. I really like it a lot...buy this. Its the real deal.
Smooth with no Shoes.......2002-06-03
While I don't pretend to understand the title, this second mix CD from the tyrant boys is the best thing i've heard all year. Craig Richards and Lee Burridge are doing well enough for themselves in the UK, and I'm glad they've found the time to put together another Tyrant CD.
Even better yet, it's a double CD. Twice the lovin'. Grooving house and breakbeats, with a lean towards the progressive without stepping through that door. While the selection of tracks is great, the mixing is mint. Smooth as Smooth can be.

Album Description
"Usually we listen to local albums this religiously only when we have crushes on members of the band. In this instance, such crushes are lacking, but This Tyrant Is Free sounds so much like our favorite late-'90s indie rock - Pavement, Palace Brothers, The Halo Benders - that we'd listen to these guys even if they came from, like, Portland or Austin or any of those Places Good Bands Come From." - The Pitch
This Tyrant Is Free began as a studio project for Andy Graham, who had moved back to Kansas after doing time in Illinois, Oregon and Colorado. Graham wasn't so hot about coming back to the land of grain, long commutes and an music scene based on embracing the roots of Americana. But while reacquainting himself with childhood friends, he found that many of his childhood friends still dug the punk and pop of their roots, even while playing in free jazz ensembles and outlaw country bands. In fact, after seeing a few Rex Hobart & The Misery Boys shows, the punk and psych pop influences became more and more evident. Not only did this inspire Graham to get back to writing, and dust off his old home recordings, but when Chad Meise (Misery Boys soundman & son of legendary jazz keyboardist Greg Meise) decided to open Gloryland Studios, plans developed for a recording project. When This Tyrant Is Free was finished, unmastered copies circulated uncontrollably through the local community, and when the final product hit the streets, it became apparent to all involved that a live presence had better materialize to justify the hype. So shows were booked and played, clubs were packed and the CDs were sold at an alarming pace. As of summer 2004, the key members of The Moment Band are going through the Graham archives, rearranging songs for new recordings and digging into some new stuff. This Tyrant Is Free is just the beginning of a great communal effort to mesh the old musicological approach of the Kansas City aesthetic with Graham's traveled approach to trying something new.

weird, raw and pretty.......2004-11-02
Not really sure what to say about this except that I can't stop listening to it. Somehow I find the ragged edges endearing, the cryptic lyrics make sense after a few listens and the melodies won't leave your head. This was a good gamble.
The Tyrant will Satisfy.......2004-10-22
This band is a blast. The first track, "Glorious," with its unlikely indie rock choral arrangement, took on a life of its own in the Kansas City-Lawrence area, where these guys hail from. And there's a pile of other great stuff in its train, lots of it unexpected and refreshing, trumpet intrusions and long slides of pedal steel and marvelous departures from the script. The lyrics are cool too, smart and strange. The Moment has huge energy and a great ear for the out-of-kilter. The collision produced some mesmerizing fire.
