Strong.......2007-06-23

As a guy who grew up on a steady diet of Dokken, Ratt, etc. My eyes were opened up when I purchased Stone Sour's new offering. I had heard 'Sillyworld' on KBPI several weeks ago and at that point I thought I was listening to a "poor man's" Pink Floyd cover band-I wrote Stone Sour off. Then, a few days ago, I heard 'Made of Scars' and I was hooked! I love this cd. A great blend of heavy, aggressive fist pumping tunes (30/30-150, Come What(ever) May, Hell & Consequences) with some very poignent songs like Zzyzx, Through Glass, and yes-Silly World. I will never relinquish my 80's hair band roots but bands like Stone Sour, Godsmack, KoRn, Puddle of Mudd, and others are definitely opening up my eyes to fresh, great new music.

Corey Who?.......2007-05-20

I don't care who he is. He has talent, and lots of it. I thought "Through The Glass" was my first contact with this band, but I quickly found out that I was wrong. This CD was so good, and piqued my curiosity about this Taylor guy so much, that I have spent roughly $100 on the various "Corey Taylor Projects". I have yet to be disappointed.

Another solid disc from Corey Taylor and company.......2007-04-13

I believe their debut to be superior to this cd, which is much more accessible to the general public, but it still has it's share of heavy moments. "Through Glass" is a catchy cross-over hit, "30/30-150" is a heavy metal song similar to Slipknot, and all of the songs on here have something to offer. Missing is the raw energy of their debut. This one is much more calculated and simplified. "Sillyworld", their current single, may be the worst song they have written. I just don't get how they can make that a single. If you are a fan of hard rock with a heavier metal side, you'll like this cd. Corey is one of the most recognizable vocalists in heavy music, and I think what he lacks in range, he makes up for by creating very catchy hooks.

A Very Solid Follow-Up!!!.......2007-04-10

As good as 2002's Self-Titled debut was, It always sounded to me, a little too much like Slipknot....Especially Track 1. However that is not the case with 2006's "Come What(ever) May", this album shows Corey Taylor and the gang coming into their own. The only real similarity here is Taylor's voice, the rest is purely Stone Sour. This is very well one of the best new metal releases in quite awhile, there isn't a single bad song on it. The album starts with a bang (30/30-150) and ends in a classic rock ballad (Zzyzx Rd.) a song that has an almost Bob Seger sound at times...Yes, you read that corectly. It shows that these guys are finally stepping out the shadows of Slipknot and into their own.

The Future of Rock`n`Roll.......2007-03-25

With the release of 'Come What(ever) May' & a ton of sold out shows World-Wide including the infamous Family Values Tour with other Hard Rock greats Deftones & KoRn, It's not ranting to say Stone Sour is more than just a side project now. In fact several Slipknot fans are worried that the recent popularity may be the sign of Corey Taylor leaving the band to stay on as frontman of Stone Sour full-time, Doubtful but a def. possibility now.

My favorite tracks include the first single '30/30-150', The catchy and head bang worthy 'Your God' & of course the World-Wide hit 'Through Glass' featuring deep meaningful lyrics that anyone can find easy to sing-a-long with and relate to. But of all the album one song sticks out most at least in my case the ballad 'Zzyzx Rd.' the vocals by Corey are mezmerizing and the song structure is beyond the rest of this album with an almost 'Oldies' feel. I applaud them for being brave enough to write such meaningful songs and move aside from there Metal roots a bit.

Stone Sour has set the example of what it means to be a Rock`n`Roll group in todays age and has been opening doors between Rock & Metal since the release of there debut album. In my humble opinion Stone Sour are easily one of (if not the) best Hard Rock groups in the scene today. Thank You.

The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19

Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

Live performances of early Lachenmann.......2003-11-16

This disc contains live performances of three of Helmut Lachenmann's earlier works--the world premieres of Interieur I and of Schwankungen am Rand, and a recent festival performance of the percussion concerto Air.

Interieur I (1966), for solo percussion, is the work Lachenmann now considers to be his Opus 1. For those who consider one percussion solo to be very much like another, this work probably will not change their mind--it is a well-crafted work but ultimately rather anonymous.

Schwankungen am Rand (1975), for orchestra, is often considered one of Lachenmann's most important works. I have always found it a little long, though the central section--where the percussionists 'play' on four thunder sheets, creating a huge variety of sounds from them--is quite extraordinary music. Good as this world premiere performance may be, it has to take a clear second place to the recent ECM recording, conducted by Peter Eotvos, which is faster, tighter, better controlled and in vastly superior sound.

Air (1969), for percussion and orchestra, one of Lachenmann's earliest mature works, is an interesting piece, the rumblings of the orchestra counterpointing the intricate sounds of the percussion part. The performance here, recorded at 1998's Ruckblick Moderne festival, is probably the best on the disc.

Overall, this disc is primarily valuable for the only available recording of Air. Interieur I cannot be regarded as a major work, and Eotvos' ECM recording--an outstanding disc overall--is to be preferred in Schwankungen am Rand.

Poorly Conceived Opera.......2003-07-03

This is just a poor opera all around.

The 'orchestra' is sort of a jazz orchestra. However, this doesn't go well with the kind of opera lines Davis is writing. The vocal lines just go this way and that... all lost with no clue where it's going to end up. Normally the orchestra and the voice compliment one another, but in this opera they are in an embittered way which makes you want to permanently silence the stereo.

The opera plot is also bad. Based around the Patty Hearst ordeal, this opera actually seems to lack a plot. The opera opens up with her laying on her bed with some guy watching television. Eventually the closet sucks her up into some unknown "evil" void where she eventually emerges pointing a gun at the guy.

Oh, but it gets better!! The answering machine gets to sing! Whoooo whee, It doesn't get any better than that! There were notes in the booklet commenting about the revolutionary ideas in opera that this encompasses. Next thing you know we'll have operas where the "You've Got Mail!" guy gets his own aria.

Overall, I listened to parts of the opera, wrapped it up, and sold it. I've only sold two CDs before out of my 300 some collection: this one and a CD I got a duplicate of. And being very much into modern American opera, that should tell you something.

When i first heard this i knew it was going to be something to remember, and when i heard it was being released on CD i was ecstatic. I would greatly recommend this set to any opera fan and also to those who just have a little bit of experience with the genre--very good and not at all snobby as most classical music can be.
