About the Artist
If it takes ten years to make an overnight hit, then NICOLAS MATAR has truly come of age. The story of House music has run from the New York underground via Ibiza to London and back around again many times over the past decade - and as the chapters have unfolded, our man has been there to turn the page.

"Nicolas combines the expertise of an A-list DJ with an international clubber¹s passion for cool music," says Journeys By DJ producer Tim Fielding. "It was a tricky task selecting a helmsman for the relaunch of JDJ. Nicolas’s sound is perfect for summer and everything he does smacks of quality. He’s got the magic touch all right."

Nicolas has been DJ’ing since the age of 15. He got an early head-start from his father, an original member of Studio 54 and a denizen of the 70’s New York club scene. "Dad had an incredible collection of Disco, Funk and Soul records," says Nicolas. "I grew up with a mini club in my basement. My parents used it to entertain their friends. It had one of the better sound systems in the city." Before long he was sneaking out to legendary clubs like Zanzibar, Shelter, Save the Robot and Sound Factory. "I was that kid who sat on the speaker all night, totally lost in the music."

Nicolas has subsequently played in every contemporary NYC club worth mentioning from Mars, Limelight and Twilo to his current residency at Centro-Fly. But it is also through travelling that he stretched the boundaries of his DJ’ing prowess.

Like most globetrotting jocks, he spins regularly in the UK, Amsterdam, Miami, Italy and Switzerland. A keen supporter, Danny Rampling invited him to feature on the Lovegroove Dance Party on BBC Radio 1. At the opening of Home, Danny’s first regular London fixture since Pure Sexy, he chose Nicolas for his fellow resident. It is perhaps his greatest accolade that for the last 6 years Nicolas has been the only non-Spanish DJ to enjoy a residency at an Ibizan club, and the world-renowned Pacha at that. In a notoriously tight-knit scene, Nicolas, who does not speak the lingo, has clearly let his music do the talking to take him to the top.

For Nicolas Matar: think innovative and up-beat, combining Pacha’s groovy sound with the deeply-rooted tradition of Paradise Garage.

Product Description
Journeys By DJ, the brand of DJ mix albums credited as the first to release live recordings of DJs on CD, is set to release a new album in July 2001. Started in London in 1992, Journeys by DJ enjoyed many defining moments, with over 20 albums released internationally, notably in the UK, USA and Japan. The return of Journeys by DJ brings an exciting promise of more high-class sonic escapism.

Most clubbers remember Journeys by DJ for such classics as Paul Oakenfold’s 1994 excursion and the seminal Coldcut album, a wild Hip Hop cut-up journey that helped redefine the genre. After “70 Minutes of Madness” in 1995, Journeys by DJ released “After Hours”, one of the first laid-back DJ mixes for the post-club vibe, followed up by Gilles Peterson and Norman Jay’s 1997 “Desert Island Mix”, setting another benchmark for eclecticism. Other high points include DJ Rap’s early downtempo Drum’n’Bass album and Keoki’s legendary “Superstar Journeys by DJ”, the first of its kind in the USA.

Now they are coming back in a blaze, with an album oozing gorgeous summer vibes, mixed by Nicolas Matar, resident at Pacha in Ibiza.

5 out of 5 stars Took me right back to Ibiza.......2002-04-11

Finally! Uplifting house that makes you want to smile, and dance. Takes you right back to the silky beaches and friendly faces...Lots of Afro/Brazilia moments and influences.

5 out of 5 stars Ibiza/Pacha Funky Room Grooves.......2002-01-15

This is one of the BEST mixed discs of the year with a truly unique style - a mix of groovy house from Spain/Portugal to Africa to Brazil. Melodic and Happy - if you like the Cafe del Mar and Hotel Costes compilations you will like this as well - a bit more uptempo. Nick was a resident DJ at Pacha in Ibiza - the best nightclub in the world.
