The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Fantastic compilation! .......2007-02-01

Very well put together, a lovely compilation. Every single time I play the Frequent Flyer cd's everyone wants to know what I'm playing. This is my favorite of the series to date.

Almost a perfect album - Disc One is perfect 2 is different.......2006-08-19

Disc one is my ideal, little bit edgy, an excellent latin infusion mixed with house, vocals in "Suavamente" are hauntingly beautiful. "Made for you" again a great house track with a latin guitar riff over it. "Same thing" is got a soft house beat with great vocals. Disc one ends with "Night sky" perfect blend of house with cool jazz laid over. Imagine cruising home at 4AM in the warm night sky in your convertable with a smoking babe next to you. That's it.

Perfect for a party. Perfect for getting down. My perfect music.

Disc one is not as good as disc one, but a totally different vibe, much more samba jazzy, not house.

For the DJ in all of us..........2001-10-10

It should come to a shock that I am reviewing something like this. I mean, come on. I used to be straight up metal man. Now look at me. I'm listening to a CD that's central instrument is a guy who takes old vinyl and essentially makes beats. So even with that simple premsise, why do I love it so much?

I guess it stems from me being a fairly rythmic person(I play drums and some hand percussion). The beats come on fast and furious. Heck, the first three tracks are over in less then 3 minutes! But the rythms are strong, heavy, and pulsating. Good for them times when you gotta groove or blowing out someones car speakers.

The one thing that serperates Mix Master Mike from the rest of the lack-luster DJs(the only on I can really think of is Lethal) is in his(no pun intened) mixing ability. Everything fits so well. While the majority of this record is just slapping you with beats, melody kicks in every once and awhile, making for diveristy(patrol knob is a good example). The really cool part about it is how fast everything comes at you.

While I don't plan on buying a lot of DJ music, Mix Master Mike stands above the crowd of annoying rap-rock DJ looking to make a quick buck. Mixing samples with techincality is something that isn't seen too often. M3 pulls it off quite nicely. Plus, you can't go wrong with that price if you get interested...

Hardcore DJs will appreciate No one else will.......2000-05-28

This album was outstanding for the simple fact that its creativity of the highest form on the wheels of steel. Its getting harder to tell whats sampled and whats scratching. BUT, if you don't like drum and beat music, you will hate it.Cop this if you are DJ, and pick up his style.

Serial Wax Killer at Large.......2000-04-09

Don't get me wrong, Anti Theft Device was an exceptionally wild album, which got enough airtime that I started to wonder if the laser could possibly wear grooves into it. Then I pick up Eye of the Cyklops, MMM's second solo album, the day it hit the stores. I expected it to be short (due to the low price), and I won't complain about the fact that this EP is only 22 minutes long, because I'm grateful that MMM even exists. This is the coolest 22 minutes of music I have heard in a very long time, and every time I hear it the sounds get more complex and the beats get more infectious. Don't waste any more time, buy it now!

It Just Don't Get Fresher Than This.......2000-03-27

If you can appreciate turntable music, then this is turntable music at its prime. Even if you don't know what "turntable music" is, you can still dig this ill space s**t. Drop everything and run out and get this boom bangin album right now. Cuz it just don't get fresher than Mix Master Mike.

Cotton Eyed (or Eye) Joe, the Rednex song.......2006-05-20

I'm a music teacher for elementary school kids. I have another version of Cotton Eyed Joe that 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders love to dance to, but the Rednex version is the one for which they always ask. Unfortunately, I haven't yet found it for sale as a single.

Although Rednex call their album and single Cotton Eye Joe, more commonly the word "Eye" in the song title is followed by a "d."

I have not heard the other songs on this CD - and in fact, haven't even heard the one I'm reviewing. This is actually a review by proxy for about 300 children.

I bought this album because several songs were showing up in my Jazzercise workout. Now, our whole family of five loves it and sings along in the car. We call it dance/pop with a twist. These tracks remind me of UK pop, and no one does it better than the British. So where's the sequel to this album?!

I listened to this CD in the car on the way home from a client's drab-to-fab new sitting room and just about got myself pulled over. It was like I was drunk, girl, this album is the bombinacious. From the Chemical Brothers to Durran2, every track is an absolute peach. And you don't have to spit out the pits. Get this album in your collection or crawl back to the stoneage. I'm for real.

Quite a nice mix........2005-01-09

This CD is a nice offering to the award winning reality television show. Music is nice mix of several music styles. Its not just dance music. I love the Bravo Network TV Show. Get this musical CD. Its an easy listen.

"Take Your Ears from Drab to Fab.".......2004-08-20

I'm not really a huge fan of the Bravo series "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," for reasons I needn't get into. This is, after all, a MUSIC review, and as such, I'll focus on the soundtrack, which happens to be much better than I expected. Albums of this sort appear to be gimmicky marketing tie-ins, featuring second-rate tracks from popular artists who wouldn't otherwise include them on their own releases. But as it turns out, it's a pretty solid collection of tunes that seesaw from pop to dance. As a child of the 1980s, my personal favorite is the Jason Nevins remix of Duran Duran's "Sunrise," the group's first song featuring all five original members in 19 years. It's a funky fusion of rock and electro, and it's a nice preview to the band's "Astronaut" album. But the fun doesn't stop there. The Chemical Brothers give Kylie's "Slow" a radical makeover, and Billy Squier's 1982 gem "Everybody Wants You" gets a modern update. Other highlights are a remix of Sting's "Never Coming Home," Basement Jaxx's "Good Luck, and Elton John's 1979 recording "Are You Ready for Love." It says a lot when a non-fan of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" gives this soundtrack four stars. The material here is strong enough to make this an interesting choice for both fans and non-fans of the TV series.

I have been a Yello fan since the early days, and I've always liked the way they come up with wonderful tunes and bizarre/catchy lyrics. This CD is great, but it seemed to lack a bit of the weirdness, there is definitely no "Oh Yeah" here. That doesn't mean it isn't great! Dada sounds so much like Kraftwerk, which isn't bad since I like them too, and a few other songs with female vocals remind me of Combustible Edison. I'm sure if you're a fan you'll like this, but don't expect any "Race" or "Evening's Young" fun. Strictly electronica and danceable.

The Dish-- This Is THE Version To Get ! :-).......2005-02-23

I bought The Eye as an import as well as the "planet dada" single and checked out this version for the video. For the price and the fact that you get the bonus CD that has every song on it that the "planet dada" single has but the "planet dada(original version)" which means it won't be redundant if you decide to play both CDs back-to-back (It's the first track on the main CD), I would recommend this over getting the import full CD and single or even just the import CD at all.

As for the video, it plays nicely on Quicktime. It wouldn't play on my Windows Media Player. It has a ".mov" extension. It's title is "Planet Dada Video." It is icing on the cake!!! It's a fun and visually interesting video-- much better than the usual fare out there. If you liked their "Squeeze Please" video that they used to have on their web site, you'll LOVE this! :-D

As far as the music goes, it ranges from jazzy dance to a sort of trance and back again. It is ve-e-e-r-r-r-y-y-y-y DADA!!!!! It's a brain twist to a beat. To it you can comfortably swing upon your feet. I personally have painted on canvas large and small. And when I'm into it, I haven't a care at all. It's happy, fun, and a nice surprise. It might not make you practical, but it could make you wise.
