5 out of 5 stars A simple message set to the right beat gets the word out.......2006-02-27

Originally published in a column by Mary Schmich of The Chicago Tribune June 1, 1997. Baz Luhrman was inspired by the Vonnegut hype and got Quindon Tarver to do the vocals. Together they spread the word to the next generation who may not want or think they need advice from "ols farts, what do they know".

On August 3, 1997, Ms Schmich writes about the work that was heard round the world:
"But out in the lawless swamp of cyberspace, Mr. Vonnegut and I are one. Out there, where any snake can masquerade as king, both of us are the author of a graduation speech that began with the immortal words, 'Wear sunscreen.'
I was alerted to my bond with Mr. Vonnegut Friday morning by several callers and e-mail correspondents who reported that the sunscreen speech was rocketing through the cyberswamp, from L.A. to New York to Scotland, in a vast e-mail chain letter.
Friends had e-mailed it to friends, who e-mailed it to more friends, all of whom were told it was the commencement address given to the graduating class at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The speaker was allegedly Kurt Vonnegut."

The genius about the song is that it is funky and catchy and insidiously makes you think. Frankly all good art makes you think long after the performance is finished.

A+ to the collaborative effort of the 3 artists who made it oh so memorable!

5 out of 5 stars You know..........2005-12-01

...WHY didn't they have this when I was a kid?!? WHY did this have to wait until I was a junior in high school to come out?!? I mean, EVERYTHING you need to know to survive life without insanely high therapy bills is in this. Junior high and high school would have been ridiculously easy if someone had told me all of this. But, I'm rambling...again. Buy it, listen to it often, and by listen, I mean LISTEN. And pass the word along to others. It's the greatest advice you'll ever find, even if it is fished from the disposal.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2005-11-01

Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen) is truely one of the most amazing songs I've ever heard. It always brightens up my day when I'm feelings down. Baz has created a work of art here, and this CD is recomended to everyone. Please give this a chance and listen!

Recorded live at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia, this double CD is one heck of an extensive tribute to Stephen Sondheim. Backed only by Paul Ford on piano, Mandy Patinkin gets through nearly three dozen songs penned by the Broadway master. Some are obvious (excerpts from Sunday in the Park with George, in which the singer created the title role), others less so ("If You Can Find Me I'm Here" from Evening Primrose). Patinkin is often mocked for his shivering falsetto, but here, it's actually when his voice explores a lower register that it falters. What's more interesting is when he tackles songs usually sung by women, such as Follies' "Broadway Baby" and Company's "Another Hundred People" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy"--the latter hammed up so much that you can hear the chewing of the scenery. A distinctively mannered interpreter, Patinkin remains an acquired taste, but fans of his will be in heaven with this set. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Patinkin Live.......2007-07-19

I am a huge Mandy Patinkin fan, and this is, without a doubt, one of the best CDs in my collection. The transitions between songs are excellent and seamless, plus the song selection was top-notch.

5 out of 5 stars Sondheim recital.......2007-01-22

Probably the best way to approach these disks is to treat them like a recital in a concert hall. Rather as you would listen to a Schubert or Schumann song cycle. Taken together this way, we come to hear Sondheim as one of our finest composers, serious, comic, manic, depressive, always dead on target no matter what the subject matter. And Patinkin is perfect for these songs; he understands the meaning and value of every note and every word, just as a fine concert singer would do, and he makes his listeners understand, too. One of the most intriguing concept albums in recent memory, and a joy all the way through. Bob Finley, Palm Springs, CA.

2 out of 5 stars Also a very dissapointed fan.......2003-08-22

I too LOVE Mandy and Stephen Sondheim and own just about everything both has ever made! I also have been to 6 of Mandy's live performances. This was truly a big dissapointment to me. Every concert I have seen Mandy in has been filled with emotion and his personality just grabs hold of you for an evening of wonderful escape-ism. This to me was very un-entertaining and I actually became irritated after awhile of listening to it. It seemed to drone on with out the wonderful feelings and emotions and soaring voice that Mandy typically puts into his music. I gave this as a gift too (since my friend and I had missed Mandy at his Sondheim review in DC last year) and felt badly that I had. There are so many other great recordings of Mandy...Kidults, Saturday in the Park with George, The Secret Garden, Mandy sings Rogers & Hammerstien and Sondheim. This one has just sat on my shelf after I played it through twice hoping to warm up to it...while my other recordings are very worn out with years of playing!

2 out of 5 stars Adequate performance; poor entertainment.......2003-05-04

I received this disc the same day a "Philip Quast Live at the Donmar". The Quast disc has its own flaws (and I dont wish to compare the two performers) but it has been strung together in a more thoughtful manner, with witty imagination and using a more dangerous in the choice of songs, which is really where this disc fails. The songs here are generally enjoyable though rather standard, and the lack of cohesion (running the songs together doesnt count) means I just dip into the discs listening to a few favourites, rather than enjoying the whole show.

2 out of 5 stars a very disappointed fan.......2003-02-05

I have every recording Patinkin appears on, even if he's only on one track; I adore his voice, his flair, his emotion, his ability to deliver a song.

But (much of) this recording is disappointing, mainly because Mr. Patinkin's voice in the lower range sounds muddled and forced, as though he's lost ability to control it (however, the more falsetto sounds are as clear and sharp as ever).

And I don't care for the format of this performance. Live recordings should have live audience reactions: one (often unrelated) song after another without applause had me wondering when--if ever--was the audience was going to be allowed to react.

Also, while I've never had the privilege of attending a Patinkin concert, I imagined that--above all-- he would be passionate. Perhaps he was. But what (mostly) comes across on the CD is a somber--almost technical--performance.

I hope he's healthy, that mixed quality of singing on this recording was just a fluke, and that his next CD will be a Five-star as all his previous ones have been

4 out of 5 stars everybody's free.......2004-08-21

Rozalla's debut album may not offer a lot in terms of musical variety, but it stands head and shoulders above albums released by similar dance artists at the time. Rozalla's beautiful spiritual voice is quite unique and its hits 'Everybody's Free', 'Are You Ready To Fly' and 'Faith (In the Power of Love)' have become classics within the genre. Other good tracks are a remix of her debut single 'Born To Love You' and especially the wonderful 'Lost In Your Ocean', which should have been released as a single. Overall, a very good dance album which has stood the test of time remarkably well. Surprisingly, the album as a whole actually sounds stronger and more original now than it did back then.

If you looking for a great dance music album, this is it. Every song is a great song. My favorites are "Born to Love You", "Love Breakdown", "Lost in Your Ocean", "Are You Ready to Fly" and many more. This album is lovely! You will love it too.

5 out of 5 stars Electronic/Dance music with Depth & Soul.......2002-12-24

There is no one that can do a song like Rozalla. (Where are you Rozalla?, Your fans are patiantly waiting for ANY new material from you.)"Everbody's Free" is one of the few Club/Dance albums that should be in the music collections of fans of R&B/Soul, Pop, and Dance-Pop music. Rozalla seizes the mystical, richly textured techno-house reins and rides. She states her case with 100% total clarity and power. Rozalla injects heart and depth into a genre that is often soulless. "Everbody's Free" is the best and most memorable dance oriented record release of 1992 and stands as one of the best dance albums of the 1990's. Her vocals are of a kind. Rozalla does work some slower soul songs into the album. The first soul song is a mid tempo track and the second is a richly done ballad. The album closes with my favourite song "Born to Love You" which was her first single from this album. Altougth "Born to Love You" did not reach the radio for airplay, it was a popular rave track in the clubs. Like Inner City's-"Paradise" album, it remains a classic in dance music history. If you dislike the often soulless and banal trance, jungle and drum n' bass music, look no further than Rozalla for the realist and most soulful dancable music. I also recommend Rozalla-"Look No Further" & "Don't Go Loose It Baby", Traci Lords-"1,000 Fires, Samantha Fox-"21st. Century Fox", Sabrina Johnson-"Yum Yum", La Bouche-"Sweet Dreams", Le Click-"Tonight is the Night", "Abigail-"Feel Good", 2 Unlimited-"Hits Unlimited", Livin' Joy-"Don't Stop Movin', N-Joi-"Bad Things" & "New Anthem", Crystal Waters-"Crystal Waters", Amber-"Amber", Ten City-"The Best of Ten City", Bryon Stingily-"Club Stories", Haddaway-"Greatest Hits", Kristine W.-"Land of the Living", Robin S-"From Now On", Taylor Dayne-"Whatever You Want", "Planet Love" & "How Many", Lil' Louis-"Journey with the Lonely", Tina Cousins-"Killing Time", Jomanda-"Someone to Love Me", "The Cover Girls-"Here It Is", Expose-"Expose", Cathy Dennis-"Move To This" & "Everybody Move: The Remixes", Sharon Redd-"Redd Hot", Bananarama-"Ultra Violet", Kim Wilde-"Loved(Remix)" and Inner City-"Paradise".

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2000-04-09

This CD is excellent. "Everybody's Free", "Faith", & "Are you ready to Fly" are classic dance club favs of mine. The songs on this CD are written with emotion and in my opinion, are powerful. I highly recommend it if you want to sit back and think, or if you want to move your feet. It's a great CD regardless of whatever mood you're in.

4 out of 5 stars driving dance release.......1999-07-08

Probably one of the best disco divas ever, Rozalla's career now belongs to the past. It's a shame because her debut was better than any other dance cd of a female singer in the early nineties. 'Are You Ready To Fly' is among the stand out tracks on an energetic and driving release.

5 out of 5 stars Free Moral Agents.......2007-07-18

This album is one of a kind. Almost trancelike, it sends you to another world. Not rushed, it takes jazz and rap, mixing and intertwining them into a beautiful creation.
Though I love the music, not everyone feels the same. It makes good background music for writing, studio work, or just playing on the computer while surfing the web.

4 out of 5 stars J-Hop put in style.......2004-07-02

This album finally makes music speak words as much as the poets and and singers on here do themselves. This was a album that comes together and puts another piece to the music world, not like bands who frantically make albums. This album was composed by Ikey Owens the aw inspiring keyboardist of sublime, long beach dub allstars, mars volta and those are just a few. Hip hop jazz in a way with experimentation every track has this face to it, and it slowly shows it self every song reveals hope happiness and inspiration. This album will get it's notice no doubt about it. If you like good music and thats a bold statement I'm putting out there because if you really like good music then this album is all good.

"Are You Ready to Fly" is Rozalla's second #1 international hit after "Everbody's Free"; U.S. Club Chart Peak:#1. The lyrics of this song are very poetic. It covers the usual house music topics: Love, Unity, Peace, and the abandonment of negativity. The song is a driving piano-driven techno/house/rave track that makes you want to move your body. Rozalla's vocals undenibly beautiful. Yes, this is another high quality song by this unique club diva.

Warning: This is not "The Sunscreen Song." That appears on Baz Luhrmann's Something for Everybody album. Cledus T. Judd (No Relation) is best known for being country music's answer to "Weird Al" Yankovic; country fans love him, and country stars love to be parodied by him. Here, he stretches across genres to parody Baz Luhrmann's "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)" and shows a spark of intelligence that usually remains hidden. This isn't Woody Allen humor, to be sure, but the two mixes of Judd's parody here--the "Do the Funky Chicken in Your Depends" mix, and the "Not Nearly As Long, Funky Chicken in Your Depends" mix--are a hell of a lot more entertaining than the hundredth spin of the original. --Randy Silver
