This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Wow ! This new release from Steve Gordon is really exceptional. I got it as a gift for the holidays and it just blew my mind. The orchestration and exotic insturments are amazing and the blend of vocals with chants from around the world really creates a trencendent sound. I've never written a review before, but when I heard this album, I felt compelled to write my feelings down of what it invoked and share them with someone. I've hardly listened to much native sounding music, but this album is much more contemporary and it reached a place in me I didn't know I had. I just sat there and rocked with the rhythms. Drum Prayer made me feel an akin-ship to the whole of the world. I didn't know what the words meant when listening the first couple of times, I just got into the instrumentation and vocals., They were so joyful, so soothing and visionary that I was compelled to at last read the liner notes. The Sanskrit, Tibetan and Lakota chants added to the native drums, flute and guitar are so well woven together, I can't imagine how it could have been done any better. I have played this album countless times already and enjoy it every time. My favorite track is `Holding the Vision'. I highly recommend this album.

I find this new release by Steve Gordon to be exquisite and perfect for massage, yoga, tantra and ecstatic dance. The blending of diverse instruments and sacred devotional chants are absolutely entrancing, making it exceptionally easy to slip deeply into an exhalted state of bliss. The vocals are particularly beautiful. I have really been a fan of Steve's previous work with both his brother David and Deborah Martin, and with the release of Drum Prayer I feel that he's really outdone himself. I absolutely love it.

This new solo project release from Steve Gordon is exceptional. A real groundbreaking piece of work for the genre, combining a variety of nature sounds and indigenous instruments from around the world, with chants for world peace from several different cultures including Lakota, Sanskrit and Tibetian. This recording melds all of these apparently diverse cultural aspects and sounds together into a delightfully inspiring and unified mix of ancient shamanic rhythms and contemporary world-beat music. Gordon has assembled a virtual host of top artists for this release, including brother David on piano, vocalists Jaya Lakshmi (Lost at Last), Lakshami Devi and Laurie Lovecraft as well as percussionists Girish Gambhira and Kim Atkinson and the amazing Sarod playing of Wynne Paris, with Digeridoo provided by Peter Van Gorder and additional electric guitar and synthesizer tracks from Spotted Peccary Music's Howard Givens. Drum Payer is brilliantly uplifting while still remaining entrancingly relaxing allowing the listener to explore uncharted expanses of this new and vivid sonic realm. The vocals are sensational and incredibly serene. The CD has been playing in the background of my home office for the past several days and each new listen reveals something new and deeper in the mix. not what I expected..........2007-01-16

I guess I took a shot in the dark with this CD. I had recently picked up Pendulums "Hold your Colours" CD which was really really good. I was listening to that CD heavily for a while and then I saw this CD, which was mixed by Pendulum, and I have to say its nothing like "Hold your Colours". But to be fair I kind of knew that seeing as the cover said "Jungle Sound". However it just ending up being unbearable D'n'B similiar to that of anything put out buy Renegade Recordings. Most of the songs have no real melody or a good build-climax-closure. Plus with all the random screaming of jungle garbage it makes this CD a waste of money in my opinion. All I can say is dont buy this CD...and incase you are interested in it, see if you can get it used or free, I wouldnt pay full price for this thing.

Great CD, But.......2006-10-08

Please don't buy this CD, It's just a Repackaged Junglesound Vol 2 (2004). Pendulum Has openly disowned this CD mix, as it's just a cheap ploy for Breakbeat Kaos to cash in on. It's great DnB, but please, do all the artists justice and go to amazon UK to buy Junglesound Vol 2. Oh, and Darrison raps over the songs on part 2 of cd1. Not terrible, but he's quite annoying on the "Another Planet". I'm just upset I found this out after purchasing the CD.

just gotta clear this up:

a) We had no prior knowledge of the release of this CD. The first we heard of it was on discussion forums linking it to the product being sold in shops.
b) We mixed the CD back in mid-2004 - therefore the mix, as well as our tracks included on the second disc, do not reflect the Pendulum sound of today (for better or worse, thats up to you ;])
c) We never intended nor agreed to release 'Masochist VIP' - I did it in about 30 minutes as something special to play out at a show. It was only given to Fresh and Adam F in low quality mp3 format for them to play out as DJ's - not to be released.
d) We didn't approve and in fact strongly disapprove of the 'Junglesound Gold' artwork, especially in relation to our name being unfairly used as an advertisement - plainly an attempt to link 'Junglesound Gold' to the recent success of 'Hold Your Colour'.

As a result of the above, we do not endorse 'Junglesound Gold' at all.

Massive double CD of some seriously hard drum & bass - Breakbeat Kaos style. CD 1 is mixed by Pendulum and hosted by MCMC & MC Darrison, CD 2 is unmixed for your pleasure! And pleasure it is from start to end pendulum rolls out dance floor rippers and some seriously hard tunes.
If you like hard drum and bass this is definately for you...if you are not into drum and bass give this a try YOU'LL LOVE IT.

Only half the songs of the original set!!.......2007-01-17

Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!

A Good Basic Collection.......2006-02-11

This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.

My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).

Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.

The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards. I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement.

what is that sound..........2007-04-18

Lamb is a band that you can't quite describe without underestimating them. You just have to listen for yourself. As for the reviews that say the singer cannot sing, her singing proficiency isn't the point. She sings emotionally, and her style is very reminiscent of 1920's ballads. She sings for the pure feeling, not to hit all the right notes, but to express the impact behind the lyrics.
Some advice for those who seem to be missing the point of bands like this: When your listening to music outside the mainstream, you really shouldn't expect it to be a cut-and-dry definition of music. You're just going to let yourself down if that's what you expect.

I had no idea Lamb existed or that I would like their music so much until I heard What Sound on a net radio station. That song alone compelled me to buy the CD and I'm happy to say it was worth every penny.

Great Collection of Lamb Tunes.......2006-10-24

It's worth the four remixes and two music videos on the second disc alone. This is not meant as a compilation of any sort to my mind but rather a collection of favorite songs and other songs not usually heard for the pleasure of Lamb fans. Too bad Lamb no longer exists but this will help fill the void for Lamb fans.

I first heard Lamb's "Heaven" on the soundtrack to the TV show Six Feet Under, so I decided to take a chance and buy one of their CDS. I have to say, this is one of the best collections I have heard in a long time. I thoroughly enjoy this CD. I also enjoy the different versions of "Gabriel", which is such a terrific song.

Yeah but...SHE CAN'T SING!.......2006-04-20

Look, I'm the first one in line to jump around extolling the virtues of not-so-well-known artists and bands, because there is so much great music to be found, but this is one that suffers from something that should have been nipped in the bud way back in the recording phase.

The singer is OUT OF TUNE people!

The music production and inventiveness here is quite good, but that's it.

Someone like Madonna might barely squeak by with her little voice, but this is worse; even the vocal HARMONIES are out of tune! What does that tell you?

Lose the singer, because no amount of electrnic wizardry can cover up this laughably weak voice.

Irresistible.......2005-07-29

From beginning to end this CD is pure delight. A great recording has great music, a great performance, and great sound; this one scores on all three counts.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals dominated Broadway in the 1940s and 1950s, and American musical theater has produced no more consistently eloquent and durable voice than Richard Rodgers. From his fertile genius flowed a surprising number of memorable songs, many of which have passed into and become an accepted and beloved part of modern American culture.

This well-filled CD (77:36) features symphonic arrangements (all but two by Robert Russell Bennett) of the music from Oklahoma (1943), Carousel (1945), State Fair (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Flower Drum Song (1958), and The Sound of Music (1959). All the great tunes are here in suites from each musical that average 10-12 minutes in length. The arrangements are expert: rich, varied, and colorful. The performances are polished, idiomatic, and irresistible; Kunzel and this orchestra are thorough masters of this kind of material. And Telarc's sound (recorded 1991) is state-of-the-art (engineer Michael Bishop deserves to take a bow).

In short, there's nothing here to cloud your listening pleasure (the only quibble I can imagine is that some of your favorites may not last long enough), so it's hard for me to envision anyone with ears and a taste for music who wouldn't enjoy this CD. Warmly recommended. Finally, if you like this one as much as I do, you might want to know that the same team has produced a companion volume, the Lerner & Lowe Songbook for Orchestra.

"Some Enchanted Evening" with Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops.......2003-12-26

Erich Kunzel's Rodgers and Hammerstein anthology with the Cincinatti Pops Orchestra is one of the best and most ravishing instrumental Rodgers and Hammerstein albums of all time. With sumptuous arrangements and warm, natural Telarc recording, this glorious 77-minute CD presents sweeping, melodic arrangements of over 60 Rodgers and Hammerstein selections, spanning eight scores, and Kunzel allows the Pops to play with a characterful and polished understanding of the Rodgers and Hammerstein idiom. The disc is enough to cheer you up on a dull day and make you smile, and it might even want to make you feel like a convert to Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals.

This CD has all the scores arranged chronologically. The OKLAHOMA! suite that opens this disc promises a feast for the senses, Kunzel ably evokes the territory's "bright, golden haze" in the way he conducts the various excerpts, until you feel the atmosphere of the country charm of the show, and the love-affair between Curly and Laurey. Then, in CAROUSEL, he ably evokes the pathos of this tragic R&H masterwork, especially in the truncated Waltz, but he leads a wonderfully melodic "June is Bustin' Out All Over" and a devotional "You'll Never Walk Alone." Although this suite does not include Billy's pivotal Soliloquy, it includes "If I Loved You" as an expression of his love for Julie, and within minutes you could be soaked in the ups and downs of the show's mood.

After a brief STATE FAIR suite, with sweeping renditions of "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "It's a Grand Night for Singing", we are brought into the disc's showstopping highlights. These highlights are the excerpts from SOUTH PACIFIC, THE KING AND I, and THE SOUND OF MUSIC. But yet Kunzel conducts the rest of the disc until the various suites amount to a series of showstoppers. These three suites present wonderfully-arranged versions of their many familiar classic songs, with well-played solos. The SOUTH PACIFIC suite presents the songs in chronological order, yet preserves the atmosphere of the show at the same time. Kunzel ably brings out the romance in "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Younger than Springtime," and contrasts it with the exotic and dreamlike "Bali Hai'i" and the comic "There is Nothing like a Dame" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair". Although the suite ends quietly with a reprise of "Dites-Moi" rather than the reprise of "Some Enchanted Evening," within minutes we are swept into the KING AND I suite. Kunzel ably brings out the Oriental pathos in this score, and he captures the warmth of Anna's rapport with the King's Siamese children in "Getting to Know You", and with the King himself in "Shall We Dance." There is also romance in the love ballads "I Have Dreamed" and "We Kiss in a Shadow." Similarly, in the selection from THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Kunzel conducts this until the orchestra soaks itself in the atmosphere of this Austrian R&H score. This SOUND OF MUSIC suite has more of a feel of the score compared to the bonus track on Sony's reissued version of the Broadway recording. You can almost feel as if you are following the progress of the Trapp family and how it lifts its spirits with the joy of music. Kunzel gives us a soaring version of the title song, and spirited versions of "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favourite Things." He balances it with the open-air quality of "Edelweiss" and "The Lonely Goatherd." Although this suite could have included "Something Good," the love ballad written for the film, the three recollections of the songs that were cut from the movie only last for a while. And, the towering version of "Climb Every Mountain" crowns this portion of the disc, and this sumptuously-produced recording. But, I should also mention the infectuous FLOWER DRUM SONG medley, where Kunzel turns this underrated score into a work of art, until it convinces you to buy the cast recording. And, don't forget about the brief CINDERELLA WALTZ, too, when Kunzel conducts it magically, until you feel like you are in the company of Cinderella and the Prince. He is able to show how this R&H score marked a comeback for R&H after the failiures of Me and Juliet, and Pipe Dream.

Overall, this glorious Rodgers and Hammerstein recording is guarunteed to make you want to pucker your lips out for a whistle or sing along (to paraphrase another revew for Kunzel's Disney Spectacular disc) - even if this recording is music only, and as long as you know the words to the songs (and you might know a large handful of them already.) There is always a certain magic in this fine CD that makes you feel like you're sitting in the theatre watching these musicals, until it makes you feel like it is truly, to borrow two R&H song titles, "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Something Wonderful" to be in Kunzel's company for this R&H offering. It would certainly be one recording that could make you feel willing to buy the complete cast recordings of the shows. And I guaruntee that it will make you feel willing to pull out your existing copies of the cast recordings to listen to them again. I also guaruntee that it will be a cornerstone in any Rodgers and Hammerstein collection, just as it is in mine. Recommended heartily to any Rodgers and Hammerstein enthusiast and to fans of Erich Kunzel's work. And, you can play it while reading the Richard Rodgers biography, Musical Stages, until Rodgers himself would count this as his favourite disc in the afterlife.

By the way, most of the arrangements for the suites on this CD were done by the veteran R&H orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett, and it surely adds to the appeal of this recording. This itself is enough to amount to the icing on the cake, since Kunzel conducts them well on here, and since this recording still allows the suites to have the original theatrical atmosphere. And, although this recording is like the Mauceri collection of the Rodgers & Hammerstein overtures in compiling orchestral suites of Rodgers & Hammerstein, I think that I like the Kunzel recording even more because Kunzel has more magic in his conducting of these suites.

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Its follow-up opts for a much darker urban nightmare motif that makes it an ideal soundtrack while reading William Gibson. Good stuff..........2007-01-07

For those with a narrow musical mind, (i.e. the 'top 40' variety) this would be an unbearable CD to have to sit through, but for those with more open musical tastes, particularly in the lineage of ambient, acid techno , then this CD is for you. The soundscapes and musical textures on this masterpiece are eerie, haunting, beautiful, intricate, complex and dark. Hats off to Dougans and Cobain , the musical geniuses behind this production. I particularly enjoy the track 'Glass'. But the songs as a whole fit perfectly together and mesh well. For those looking for something similar, try Tangerine Dream's 'Ricochet'. This is the only album I can compare it to in terms of eerie, haunting, beautiful, intricate , complex and dark. And TG did it back in the 70's...live! Even the album cover , like Dead Cities, is ominous. Good stuff.....

One of my top 5 albums of all time.......2006-01-09

Even though I bought this album almost a decade ago I have to express how wonderful of an album it is. The brilliance of this album lies in the conjured images it leaves in ones mind after listening to it. It seems the music was composed for a noire sci-fi film yet to be made. One moment its hostile the next its absolutely beautiful. Each track fades into an other weaving in and out of you're subconcious. If you're to get one electronica album its this one. A timeless masterpiece of epic proportions. FSOL's most surreal album to date.....do yourself a favor and get it while you still can.

There's some good songs on ISDN and some good ones on Lifeforms, but this entire album is creme de la creme. It is definitely one of my favorites of all time. Each track has it's own identity, you never know where the next one is going. In a good way.

Better Than Great.......2005-09-06

What's more to say about what may be the best "rock" album ever (especially if you consider the "My Kingdom" EP to be the second disc in a two disc set)? The most emotionally wide-ranging album from one of the best bands ever. Who else has ever made music like FSOL? The Beatles and Fripp&Crimson are the only possible contenders. I've never heard anything that does a better job of juxtaposing the terrifying and the unbearably beautiful. If I could pinpoint the one disinguishing feature of all FSOL/AA releases, it would be (as a line in "The Isness" goes) "...[a longing for] inexhaustible ecstasy." It's all the more poignant on this album because of its being interwoven with themes of terror, paranoia and a sense of unrecoverable loss of something without which life isn't worth living. It sounds hokey, but just opening up the booklet while listening to "Her Face Forms in Summertime" and reading the scrawled message "things are getting f*&ked up round here" makes my eyes a little watery. My CD developed a 2 second glitch and I just ordered another one--this is so incredible that nothing less than perfection will do.

Just a few points of note: if you're wondering why you spent all that money on your two channel stereo and you haven't heard this album yet, pick it up and turn it up. I've heard recordings with more bottom end and slam, but none with more depth, nuance and musicality. I've also found that one of the true tests of a Masterpiece is whether it's possible to really enjoy listening to anything else after its over. Play Coltrane's "Ascension," Beethoven's String Quartet in A Minor Op. 132, or Bruckner's Ninth and see what I mean. I played Dead Cities last night and everything to which I tried to listen sounded hopelessly trivial afterwards. In the early 80s, a lot of my friends used to speak of The Clash as "the only band that mattered." At the time, I didn't think any band had mattered all that much since '72. To my now-much-older ears, FSOL fits that description more accurately than any band to the last 35 years, and this is probably their best work (every single one of them is a desert island disc, however). One of the very few utterly timeless classics of modern music, and a record that belongs in the collection of anyone with ears.

For me, this is my favorite FSOL record. Leans heavily on trip hop flavors and does not sound like Lifeforms at all. Well performed and intellegently written.
