Never shy about letting listeners in on their biggest influences--a later Spacemen disc was titled Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To--this British trio crafted some of the most genuinely psychedelic music of the '80s and '90s before splitting into Spiritualized and Spectrum/EAR. The Perfect Prescription should appeal to fans of the former band, with its dazzlingly layered treatment of songs that, when pinned down for analysis, actually prove to be pop in its most majestic sense. The constantly oscillating guitars of Jason Pierce and Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember, seldom shackled to anything as pedestrian as a standard beat, are unparalleled in their ability to take listeners on a journey to the center of the mind. Devotees of the earlier psychedelic era should note the presence of an extended, demented cover of the Red Krayola's "Transparent Radiation." --David Sprague

5 out of 5 stars conspiracy against me.......2007-07-07

There must be a conspiracy against me... because I really thought that I missed nothing... yet - there is this really big elephant in the middle of my living room named "Spacemen 3."

How I could have completely missed this band when I had already investigated the periphery of this genre so completely really thwarts me.

anyway, better in 2007 than never I suppose. I heard this in my favorite CD store a few weeks ago and instantly bought it - I have retroactivated my love for this band to 1980 something and they have been in my heart all along - I just didn't know them.

If you are secure enough to admit that you missed them also - just buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Rock Solid Psych Gem.......2005-05-20

Amazing. Simply, astoundingly, amazing. Listening to this is an epic, truly awesome adventure in sound. Equal parts Beatles and Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3 iron out SOLID rock jams with heavy 60's inspiration. It is a spiritual and deep album that evokes a mystical "sensuality that I can't explain."

Highlights include the stunning violin work on "Transparent Radiation" and the jazzy, chilled out trumpets on "Feel So Good." Albums like this are refreshing in the extreme... it gets back to some of the original inspirations.

Stands up to heavy rotation. A great album for summer. If you like this, you might like:

5 out of 5 stars Spiritualized Vs Spacemen 3.......2005-03-14

This is not a comment about the two bands' vinyl output but a comment on their live performances and thus a comment on the differences betwen the two bands. I saw Spacemen 3 play at The Town and Country Club in Kentish Town (London). When we arrived we were a litle late because, in that era, to get anything done usually took a very long time. Anyway, the Spacemen were already playing. Playing is not really the term for it as all three were sitting down on tall stools and seemingly in their own worlds, noodling away on their respective instruments. I remember being somewhat taken aback but soon forgot this as I got down with my girlfriend and what we'd brought to the club. I don't remember the gig.

A few years later down the drug abuse trail and I'd taken a few lessons from my heroes. Spiritualized was playing junkie music so the best way to experience their music was to be on the same wavelength. Right? Consequently, at The Albert Hall I fell asleep and only woke up to the more rockier numbers (they have some?)before falling back into my golden slumbers. I had a lovely time but do I remember the gig?

So: Spacemen 3 didn't send you to sleep because they were already asleep. Spiritualized have never woken up(although "Amazing Grace" may be in the process of wakening up).

P.S. At the time Spacemen 3 were linked with Loop and Thee Hypnotics. Anyone remember them and the excellent Treworgy debacle of a festival?

Transcendent bliss that takes you way up before you crash hard. . . . Essential.

5 out of 5 stars lost in space, gladly.......2004-04-11

this was the singular record that flipped my ear over to genuinely druggy noise. the title of their first record (taking drugs to make music to take drugs to) really says it all. this isn't for the A&R hacks or critics or catalog dweebs, it's for the stoners who want to go home and get into a deep nod to something made for just that. comparing it to other things or even really describing it is sort of beside the point; it's not so much music as a situation, an ocean to lose oneself in. the reviewer that says it has little noteworthy musicianship or some such is missing the point altogether. and man if you find anything at all redeemable in Spiritualized, go try this, the real thing (man, did jason go on Prozac or something? what a bunch of fluff they make now, yuck). Sonic Boom continued on as Spectrum, which made some good stuff, as well as some fabulously narcissistic drivel, then later on to become E.A.R., which keeps pumping out top quality leftfield trippiness. This is an essential record if there ever was one.

Album Description

Their third album contains ten tracks of orchestral sounds over deep layers of electronic beats. All the tracks incorporate samples, many of which seem to expose the hypocrisy of government and religion, as well as explore the realms of death and destruction. Ruthless and acidic.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not the best album I've heard........2007-07-15

This was my first Grendel album, and to be honest, I had almost given up on this artist based on this album. The lyrics are barried so far below the electronics that you can barely hear a single word, much less understand it. The music is cheap, and the synth notes are hardley impressive. All in all, this album is about a 2.5, but since I can't vote that way, I'd sooner give it a 2 than a 3. If your new to Grendel, don't start your collection here. The newer album "Harsh Generation" is way, way, way, way, way, way, better.

3 out of 5 stars Ok..ish........2007-05-30

I think that Grendel has potential to do some great things, but speaking for this album, I wasn't verry impressed. There are a few songs that are really good, but for the most part the vocals were recorded too low and many of the synth lines are verry basic and lack anything new or original. Grendel is related to the EBM/Industrial genre that is being done much better by artist such as Wumpscut, Suicide Cammando, and Hocico. I don't think Grendel is nearly as good as those bands are. Grendel has a long ways to go still...not a five star effort thus far.

4 out of 5 stars A joyous meeting.......2001-03-15

Horace Silver has recorded in all sorts of styles. What commends this album is the unbridled nature of his piano playing, where it sounds as though he enjoyed getting funky on the session. The real bonus, however, is the appearance of the Brecker brothers who take every opportunity to push themselves and Silver into extended solos. Randy Brecker's trumpet is at times as unrestrained as I can remember him playing in recent years. Add to that the rhythm section of Ron Carter on Bass and Louis Hayes on drums, and the quintet really cooks on the up-tempo numbers. If you're looking for a "different" Horace Silver then this album could be for you!

4 out of 5 stars Tasty, Tasty.......1999-03-05

What else can I say? I reserve 5's for complete knockdown landmark recordings. While not that, this fresh work shows Horace is still writing excellent material and the band packs a wallop. Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars This looks like the album Junko Partner........2007-01-09

This looks like the same set of songs that's on the albums Junko Partner and American Hero. I have the latter two, and they are identical. I happen to love this album, not because it's Bloomfield's best album, but I love the range of music on this album. I remember Hully Gully as a dance song (Bloomfield does a really good job with it), then he goes into country, "drug" songs, and gospel - with Women Lovin Each Other Blues thrown in for fun! If you want to see other reviews, please check the two albums listed above for them. There are plenty of reviews to read there!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music from the talented Aynsley Dunbar.......2002-09-03

This album is incredible. Traditional blues rock n' roll, with the incredible back-beat of it's leader the famed Aynsley Dunbar, who when on to work with David Bowie, Whitesnake, Lou Reed, Journey, UFO, and hundreds of others. He has the magic touch when it comes to putting music out, and this early recording in his career clearly shows why he went on to become the giant in the business he is today. Victor Brox on Vocals, Alex Dmochowski on bass, and John Moorshead on guitar are some of the best players of their time. If you like traditional rock n' roll blues, you will not be disappointed with this album.

Cheers, Alan

The Mobius Band are the most artistically mature unsigned act I have heard since Beck didn't have a deal. For now, they sell their CDs direct to fans, and you should become one today. Start with either this one or "Two;" it doesn't matter because you'll end up buying the other soon enough. If you like Trans Am, Tortoise, Yo La Tengo, Labradford or Otomo Yoshihide, you will like the Mobius Band.

5 out of 5 stars Best Secret in Music.......2002-08-12

Nobody seems to know about this band and it's too damn bad. These guys must've been raised on Sun Ra and Miles Davis and are currently listening to modern indie rock like modest mouse or wilco. The music is a fusion of jazz rythms, post - rock instrumentation and electronic adventurism. If tortoise were more rockin and less.....well.....boring, you'd get something half as good as this. Highly reccommended to anyone who digs music that empasizes innovation and listenability at the same time.

Country Rap Tune, even tho it's a single, and therefore probably one of the more presentable, commercialized, most-likely-to-sell songs, is really hot. I was listening to the radio one night before bed and heard it, so I got the mp3 the next day, 1st thing. I haven't heard the whole cd, but I'd definitely like to based on a few songs.

      Album Description

"Prescription For Soul" is rhythm and blues at its best, featuring a blazing 5-piece horn section. DoctorfunK presents some fine original compositions, a few covers, three live performances, impeccable arrangements and fine musicianship in their first release.

Anchoring the CD is a wonderfully crafted tribute to Tower of Power, titled "Livin' in Bump City." Arranger, Jack Halsey melds an original composition with some 30 snippets from Tower of Power's extensive song list.

As well, the CD features an orignal Kupka/Castillo/Holt composition titled "Step Up To The Plate."

In short, if you like horns with your soul music, DoctorfunK does it all in "Prescription For Soul."

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2004-05-06

Doctorfunk has done a great job of mixing lyrics and hard driving horns. Their tribute song to Tower Of Power is by far the best cut. "Livin' In Bump City" is a classic mix of old school funk and new soul. "Step Up To The Plate" has the sound of a sure hit for this band. You can sure here the influence of Emilio and the Funky Doctor in this outstanding piece of work. Keep up the good work, and get down to the Bay Area for a concert.

5 out of 5 stars The younger ,sharper, tighter with time, new "Tower of Power".......2003-10-12

Taken under TOP's wing by "Doc" Krupka's new label "strokeland records", This new young band promises to pick up where Tower leaves off(I know,...Tower of Power are immortals) Anyway, They promise to deliver the Oakland soul without sounding like a TOP cover band. NOT EASY!! My only fear is "Boston syndrome" Like the band "Boston", The first album is so technically, emotionally, and Awe-inspiringly Perfect that Album number 2 will have a hell of a job topping this one. God how I hope I'm wrong. PS, the recording quality on this disc is incredible. I build competition level sound systems ,2 of which are going to the nationals next month ( the SQ or Sound Quality classes),and often use this disc as a tuning and reference tool. Awesome! $500 watts worth of Jazz at a primarily hip hop/ rap oriented crowd really gets peoples attention and actaully has earned instant respect from some of the "less younger" judges. Hehe

If your a Tower Of Power fan your going to love this CD. BIG HORN SOUND is the basis of this group, but the rest of the band is right there with them. From fast & fun to heart pulling this CD has it all. My 14, 12, 10 and 6 year old love it as much as me. I just can't wait for them to come to So. California. When we play it for our friends the first thing they say is "Where did you buy this?" and we head to the computer. New Red Sleds

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Get Funky!.......2003-04-19

This is the first CD for the Seattle-based group, DoctorfunK. If I may borrow a theme from Track 2, "Step Up To The Plate," they stepped up to the plate and hit a homer in their first at-bat.

This CD thoroughly showcases their considerable talents as a funk-based horns band. The CD features original compositions, a couple of great covers of old songs, some live material, and a cleverly conceived and well-executed tribute to my favorite band, Tower of Power.

My personal favorite is the great funk groove, "Gotta Get Funky." You know how some songs sound contrived and others just flow? This track simply flows, including an exciting saxophone solo on the bridge. "New Red Sleds" is also a driving, funk-based groove that will make you long for more.

This CD has many wonderful flavors to it. For example, the beginning of the track to which I previously alluded, "Step Up To The Plate," actually has traces of Average White Band's sound, at least to my ears. If you are a baseball fan, you will love this tribute to America's pastime. Former Tower of Power member Mic Gillette takes the trombone solo on this track.

DoctorfunK's cover of the Spencer Davis classic, "I'm A Man," will make you sit up and take notice. It is a much slower groove than the original, nevertheless an excellent interpretation that stands on its own! The two live tracks, "It May Be Very Good" and "We Could Make a Cool Hang," are excellent covers of Doc Kupka's 1999 Strokeland Superband CD (The Funky Doctor is Tower of Power's bari saxophonist, in case you didn't know) that are true to the originals. This CD, too, is from Strokeland Records.

I don't like to single out any musician in a review, because it does disservice to the others, but I really like Gary Verrill's work on the B-3 and Angelo Guerrero's lead sax work on this CD. And Fritz Whitney on the bari sax adds dimension, depth, and a funky bottom end to the music.

"Livin' in Bump City" is a tribute to the legendary soul and funk band from Oakland, California--Tower of Power. By my count, there are more than two dozen references to Tower of Power songs on this track, and I noticed in the liner notes that T.o.P.'s current guitarist, Jeff Tamelier, is a guest musician on this track. Former T.o.P. members Greg Adams, Chester Thompson, and Bill Churchville apparently collaborated on this track, as did the great horns arranger, David Eskridge.

This CD also features a stirring version of Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" that shows that DoctorfunK can be laid back as well as downright funky. To me it is the perfect mix of funk and soul that will leave you thirsting for more. If there is one criticism to be made, I wish their music would have filled the entire 74-minute CD (which is a backdoor compliment, at worst!).

All-in-all, if you are a fan of the funk, if you feign the slightest interest in this kind of music, this CD is mandatory for your collection! I know I will be looking forward to their next release, for sure!
