Customer Reviews:
great new songs, but too many old songs and bad mixing.......2005-06-17
I have two problems with this release. First, according to the sticker on the frontcover, it is supposed to contain "contemporary deep trance". However, it is not entirely contemporary, seven songs are 4 to 11 years old (dates below).
Second, they have kept their bad mixing of songs: the last two seconds of a song are mixed with the beginning of the new one. I do not see the purpose of having the last sounds of the previous song at the beginning of another. Either they mix it properly or they don't. Take Steve Porter's remix of Amber (track 9, cd 2), this is the only cd where it is released full length, but they managed to include the end of the previous song at the beginning of the remix. Not great if you want to isolate the song on a compilation or a radio program.
Here are the songs breakdown and comments:
CD 1 (74:38):
1. Perasma: Swing 2 Harmony (Original) - 9:45, totally unmixed - date: 2004. Gabriel & Dresden have recently done a remix of this great progressive piece.
2. Sander Kleinenberg: My Lexicon (Original Mix, also known as Full Length Version) - 9:05, totally unmixed - date: 2000. A classic of deep progressive trance.
3. Reflekt Feat. Delline Bass: Need To Feel Loved (Original, known als 12" Club Mix) - 7:23, mixed: you get the last second of track 2 at the beginning - date: 2004. Great prog/tech house song.
4. Space Manoeuvres: Stage One (Separation Mix) - 8:02, unmixed - date: 1999. Classic progressive trance song by Quivver and Lea Kenny, the Total Separation Mix is featured on Sasha & Digweed's Northern Exposure - Expeditions. An excerpt from the newly-released album by Space Manoeuvres, "OID", would have been better.
5. BT: Mercure And Solace (BT 12" Starmix - also known as BT's Vocal Mix) - 8:28, unmixed - date: 1999. Another old classic with top-notch vocals by Jan Johnston.
6. Michael Burns Presents Blue Haze: Into Nothing (Hamel's Last Time for 9 Mix) - 8:46, unmixed - date: 2004. Great dark bassline. A bit different from "Forwards" (on Gabriel & Dresden's Bloom) and in the style of Markus Schulz's Miami '05. Featured on Sander Kleinenberg's Renaissance: This Is Everybody Too.
7. First Life: Be One Of Us (Original) - 7:13, unmixed - date: 1994. Not great, this is the less "contemporary" of the older songs... Furthermore, it was not remastered. As with track 4, this title was recently remixed by Chris Fortier and First Life itself, maybe they could have put one of these newer (but probably more expensive) versions.
8. Rachael Starr: Till There Was You (Gabriel & Dresden Club Mix) - 8:35, unmixed - date: 2005. Excellent remix with dark bassline and tribal beats.
9. Der Dritte Raum: Hale Bopp (Raumgleiter Version) - 7:22, mixed: has the last two seconds of the previous song at the beginning - date: 1999. Boring, outdated techno mix. The original version was featured on Sasha's San Francisco (GU009).
CD 2 (78:33):
1. Pole Folder & CP: Apollo Vibes (Original Mix) - 9:42, unmixed - date: 2001. Nice, abstract progressive trance from Bedrock.
2. Chab Feat. JD Davis: Closer To Me (Renaissance Mix) - 8:00, mixed: starts with the last second of the previous song - date: 2004. Boring electro house with funk vocals.
3. JASE From Outta Space Feat. Claire Sky: Do What U Want (Infusion Remix) - 8:25, unmixed - date: 2004. Top-notch remix by Aussie Infusion with dark bassline.
4. Derek Howell: Happy To Be Sad - 8:46, unmixed - date: 2004. Excellent smooth progressive trance song, released on Bedrock. Featured on Hernan Cattaneo's Renaissance: The Master Series Vol. 2.
5. Lotus: Within Or Without You (Mr Sam's Travel To New York Remix) - 9:53, mixed (the end of the previous song opens the song) and edited (one minute was cut) - date: 2000. Trance song typical of the 2000 area.
6. Holden: A Break In The Clouds (Main Mix) - 8:23, unmixed but edited (1:30 was cut) - date: 2003. Nice, spacey progressive song with the typical James Holden twisted beats and distorted sounds.
7. Tilt: Twelve (Dousk Mix) - 8:10, unmixed but edited (1:15 was cut) - date: 2005. Very good progressive song with oriental sounds. Featured on Tiesto's In Search Of Sunrise Vol. 4. The original mastering was not very good and the sound level stays the same here.
8. Mic Burns: See Me Fall (Matthew Dekay & Proluctors Remix) - 9:19, unmixed - date: 2004. Here comes Michael Burns again with another great song, trancier and less dark than "Into Nothing".
9. Amber: Anyway (Steve Porter's Mix 2) - 7:56, mixed (the last second of the previous song is at the beginning of this one) - date: 2003. A Bedrock release, this mix is a superb progressive house track, which was featured on Bedrock's Layered Sounds and Marco V's Comb:inations. Mix 1 has less vocals.
