Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

A Fine Soundtrack of a Fine Movie.......2007-07-15

I basically love the movie, because it's poetic along with Montana wilderness and I am a fly-fisherman. I have just bought this CD as my background music while I am tying flies. And it works very very well. Each track reminds me of each moment of the movie, especially, tracks from Track 25 "Yes, Quite a Day" to Track 31 "Hauted by Waters" just make me poignant. An exclusive interview with the composer is also very unique and worth to hear about the background of the movie. "The Moment That Could Not Last" last only 1:24, how about in our real life? Is it gonna be like Paul's? I am hautend by this soundtrack.

Personally, this is one of the absolute BEST soundtracks I have ever listened to. The music is calming, soothing, and truly wonderful. The music is so well put together and nicely coordinated and I feel like I am watching the movie again...it also makes great to read the Laura Ingalls Wilder books too. Try it...you might be suprised how well it fits. :)

Music that transcends simple meaning..........2006-07-16

Mark Isham's score for the motion picture A River Runs Through It is one of the most memorable and emotionally captivating film scores of all time. The arrangements of strings, piano, woodwinds create a meditative and reflective range of music throughout the film capturing all the emotions of this powerful drama about an American family in rural Montana. It is at once deeply haunting, moving, nostalgic and sentimental and captures the innocence and beauty of nature and childhood, as well as darker themes of rebellion and tragedy. There is a profound sense of emotion that is embedded within the music that sweeps over me every time I hear it. A combination of happiness, sadness, excitement, and reflection. There is something simply sweeping and majestic within his music. I couldn't think of anything else that would better compliment the film. Highly recommended.

Remember-Mckinley was president when these tunes were new.......2007-03-10

In the 1890s and the early years of the 20th century sound recordings were very new and very fascinating to the population at large..Being able to hear a recording of a popular song,or listen to a piano roll transcription was,at the time,considered something of a miracle...Alas,since the technology was new the recording process was primitive...VERY primitive...often entire orchestras played into a recording horn,and the resulting sound reminds one of listening to something in a tunnel...very little could be done to make the sound pristine,and because of it the recordings from that period all have an antique and primitive atmosphere to them...recordings that old,and not saved upon tape,or disc,often poorly kept and poorly maintained,tend to deteriorate ,and,in many cases with regard to the items presented upon this album,the original"master"recording is lost,and only a copy remains,often a badly deteriorated,commercial copy..scratches,recording anaolomies,as well as warpage and general age have taken thier toll..Some would think,rather foolishly as it turns out,that such modern restorative processes such as"Cedar" might erase the imperfections,the scratches,the warpage,the cracks and hisses,but this is just not so...
For those of you old enough to have had long-playing records,45s,or 78s,just imagine that the ONLY copy of a particular album or song title is your old,scratched,worn disc...not some master tape or disc held in a vault somewhere,but your old beat up copy...Imagine further that you submit this old beat up copy for restoration...Sure,it may sound better afterwards than it did before,but,all in all,it still sounds pretty bad,at least by modern standards...
This is the sort of sound reproduction one gets on this album...Efforts were made to restore these sides(contrary to the opinion of another review found here about this album)but when one is dealing with recordings 100 or so years old,made when recording tecniques were primitive,and ,in some cases,having to attempt restoration on a used COPY sold to and played by someone like you and I way back when,restoration to a"perfect" sense is just not possible..Indeed,even if "perfection"could be achieved,the original sound of some of these old sides never was too good to begin with..
Be this as it may,the sides presented here are historic,to say the very least,and representative of what the public of the 1890s liked to hear...Listening to these sides,imperfections and all,gives one a sense of that time,a sense of the enormous technological gulf between these recordings and the ones available today,and,perhaps most importantly,gives us an overview of the sort of entertainment that drove our great great grandparents wild...
If you can get over the primitive sound of these recordings,or get yourself used to it,then give this album a try...

Loves Old Sweet Song Leaves a Bitter Taste.......2003-04-27

While the performances on this CD are great the transfers from the original recordings are about the worst i have ever heard. No care whatever was spent in dubbing these records to Cd. The originals in my collection sound many times better than these. I bought this for convenience but find it too terrible to listen

Better performances of 4'33" are out there.......2005-07-05

Both of the renditions of 4'33" to be had here are capably played, but two considerations force me to withhold a recommendation. First, the sound levels are atrocious; I could scarcely hear the performances. Secondly, the tempi were unbearably ponderous. I listened through the entire piece & at the end the first note had yet to be played. I recommend instead the superlative recording put out by the Amadinda Percussion Group, where you will discover an interpretation of the highest calibre.

This was an amazing concert and I own a CD of the recording.... if you are at all "listening" out there, looking for sound that will take you beyond your normal experience, this collaborative work of incredible musicians, a live recording, get this one and research those who were performing.... you will not be disappointed.

4:33 has got to be the single best song in western tonality! Wow! I mean what kind of genius could come up with that!

Well I thought this was it I thought Man They wont ever be as good as this. I spoke to them at a music festival and they said they werent impressed with this CD, I was Shocked! Mark my words this music is "mesmerizing." I believe Pop Unknown is from Austin, Texas and they are destined to hit the air waves near you... If your into SWELL, The Verve, Creeper Lagoon, or just dreamy surreal sounds, you won't be disappointed. The only disappointment you'll feel is when this five song EP comes to an end. Trust me on this...

Deep Elm records has put out a plethora of good emo bands in the texas area. One of the best (in this reviewers humble opinion) is Pop Unknown. This group is the product of a few great bands most name worthy is Mineral, but also Imbroco (also great) and Feed Lucy (never heard them). On 'If Arsenic Fails, Try Algebra' Pop Unknown exercises their pop sensibilities to the core, wandering guitars reminiscent of Endserenading. Vocals that send shivers down your spine, and hooks to die for. This album is finely crafted, the production is good for an indie band without sounding like a studio band. If the first 5 songs don't get you going then check your pulse... for crips sake buy this cd.

Pop Unknown turn Arsenic and Algebra into things of BEAUTY.......2000-02-22

I am a huge fan of all of Pop Unknown's work....but this album by far exceeded my expectations! The layers of melodic guitar rhythms put me in a trans. "If Arsenic Fails Try Algebra" is an all-together great record. I love the vocals, lyrics, beautiful music, and the new pop twist. In "Half of Ninety" the upbeat guitar rhythms and the unique drum-style of Gabe W. (ex: mineral) are almost haunting. This is one song that will definately stick in your head for the rest of the day! I don't have a favorite song yet because they are all great...the only song I disliked in any way shape or form is now growing on me, so I have NO COMPLAINTS! Finally, a Texas band worth listening to and writing about! Everyone's a critic...so I urge you all to check it out for yourselves. It will be well worth the effort. There are some e-music collaborations that are just meant to be. The collaboration between Vidna Obmana, nee Dirk Serries, and Brannan Lane, nee Brannan Lane, is such a collaboration. Dirk has been one of the new millennium's busiest electronicians. Brannan's release schedule for 2002 has lots of neat stuff and lots of CD's. He has five or six releases right now that are "new."
Deep Unknown is a set of foggy tribal expansive atmospheres. Brannan's space minimalism and Dirk's electro-tribal soundworlds blend smoothly and neatly into a somber, almost destitute soundscape. This CD is about isolation and the limited benefits of that emotional defense mechanism. The benefits are the perceptions of freedom, self-importance and egotistical introspection. The dangers of isolation are clear. The biggest danger is listening to one's own interpretation of the inner self.
So the low-key soundscape plays to the angst of isolation too. These expert sound designers have built a massive soundworld for isolation.
