Dark Side of the Moon, originally released in 1973, is one of those albums that is discovered anew by each generation of rock listeners. This complex, often psychedelic music works very well because Pink Floyd doesn't rush anything; the songs are mainly slow to mid-tempo, with attention paid throughout to musical texture and mood. The sound effects on songs like "On the Run," "Time" and especially "Money" (with sampled sounds of clinking coins and cash registers turned into rhythmic accompaniment) are impressive, especially when we remember that 1973 was before the advent of digital recording techniques. These guys, Pink Floyd, are simply copying everything that I created on my 4-track back in 1968. I have thought about suing them on several occasions since the album was first released back in March of 1973, but I have never had the money to afford an attorney. Plus, The Electric Prunes were the first band to compose and perform this so-called psychedelic music.

Very overrated and unoriginal.

This black pearl of Rogerian profundity represents the pessimist's inversion of, "today is the first day of the rest of your life." Between both extremes lies the truth, which is that each day brings us closer to judgement, heaven or hell, the choice of which is ours, based upon the way that we tick away "the moments that make up the dull day." It takes courage to face the fact that our actions are meaningful and have eternal consequences, no matter how mundane they may be. "Life sucks and then you die" is a great excuse for those who are too lazy to clean the toilet, like your mother asked you to. Instead, you can flop down on the couch, get stoned, veg out to some Floyd, and tell yourself that you're so much better than "them," be they soldiers ("Us and Them"), or greedy businessmen ("Money"), or your mother, who still wants you to clean the toilet. So get over your self-righteous, self-pity, and do something for someone else for a change. A bath every once in a while wouldn't hurt either...


Of all the memorable lines in this great album, why do I seize on this one? Because it best represents the philosophy that lies beneath this album, which is, at best, pessimism, and at worst, despair and fatalism. This is dangerous stuff, especially for young people, who are prone to narcissism.

Although importantly flawed, DSOTM is a great album. "Money" and "Us and Them" are conceptual and musical masterpieces. "Money" is especially notable for the best use of sound effects in rock history, and the poignant "Us and Them" soars musically. "The Great Gig in the Sky" is a daring innovation (singing, without words) that wholly succeeds as a mystical, pagan contemplation of death. "Time" is another musical gem that, despite the objections given above, warns us all about wasting our talents, in what is perhaps my favorite line of the album, "Then one day you turn to find/ ten years have got behind you/ no one told you when to run/ you missed the starting gun." "On the Run" is sonically ground-breaking and a pleasure to listen to.

Unfortunately, the sophomoric "Brain Damage" mars the album with its spoken-word and cackling pretension. This is excusable due to former bandmate Syd Barrett's descent into madness, but "Brain Damage" sounds like something out of a bad science fiction movie, not as a mature consideration of mental illness.

Overall, DSOTM represents a historic and musical milestone, and is a must for every rock music collection, the above objections notwithstanding.

Polished and pretentious. .......2007-07-18

I listened to Pink Floyd when I was at school (late 1980s BTW). It just seemed the thing to do for a teenager. There was a feeling of thinking yourself more grown up listening to such a supposedly intelligent band. And maybe also a slight thrill of teenage rebellion in listening to a band that took drugs (gasp!)

Revsiting it so many years later it's hard to see what the fuss is about. It's a very well produced album I'll grant you that. Sound is excellent throughout (although perhaps Alan Parsons, not Pink Floyd themselves is mainly to thank for that) But *musically* I can't really see this as the greatest thing ever recorded, let alone greatest pop record.

Speak To Me- not really music,but an atmospheric intro
Breathe- Nice enough soft tune, but not really memorable. Water's is at his worst "butter wouldn't melt in my mouth" gentleness though.
On The Run - A synth going "bloobly bloobly blooby" to sound effects. Must have seemed clever in 1973 but it's just boring after about 3 listens.
Time- The first genuinely good song here. The guitar solo is about as good as the clean "understated" guitar style gets. Great intro too.
Great Gig In The Sky- Moving in parts, but a lot of the time it's just tuneless wailing.

Money- Floyd get funky. Meh. One of the first manifestations of Waters annoying "I hate the music business" fixation. Hey Roger my heart bleeds for you, with you having so much money. It's evil, I know.
Us And Them- Like Breathe, it's a quiet little song, quite pleasant, but to me it wouldn't sound out of place in Sesame Street.
Any Colour You Like - Hit and miss instrumental.
Brain Damage -Good song. I sometimes wonder though if Water's too obvious English pronounciations ("the lunatic is on the grawhss") are a turn on for Americans in the way that Monty Python's pronounciations of "bawwhhstid" have them in stitches.
Eclipse.- Nice ending to the album.

So overall, there are some good momemts here and there. But, in essence this album is essentially a soft rock album dressed up in Stanley Kubrick-esque pretentions. It's not "space rock", despite what people say. Early Tangerine Dream, for example, would have much more reason to call an album "Dark Side Of The Moon" than Pink Floyd.

I don't hate this album, I just don't think it's worth getting too excited over. I heard it in my formative years, but it's not music I think is worth revisiting.

Relevant Over 30 Years Later.......2007-07-09

Incredibly, Dark Side Of The Moon, by Pink Floyd, was released almost 35 years ago. The amazing thing is that this excellent CD is still important and relevant today. I can listen to Us and Them over and over again. The hypnotic perfection of this CD is amazing. Most bands would love to have a collection of greatest hits that would rival this one album by this incredible band. If you have not heard this, you are in for a treat. A Five star masterpiece.

A Darker Side of Pink Floyd.......2007-07-21

The Dark side of the Moon is possibly Pink Floyd's best and most popularly acclaimed recording, it is indeed a "classic album". With the smooth vocals of Roger Waters and the lead guitar work of David Gilmour it is a classic of progressive-rock that is indeed a profound experience to listen to. Released in 1973 it was an immediate hit with the hippies still around in the early seventies, with its post psychedelic soundscape. It is darker and more brooding in tone than the earlier Syd Barrett led (who had a mental breakdown due to taking too many acid trips) era Floyd and is indeed an album to immerse one's self in. The more one listens to Dark Side the more one starts to appreciate what a revolutionary album it was for its time, it has inspired generations with its melodious music and enigmatic lyrics.

With its complicated sound structures and beautiful mixing The Dark Side of The Moon begs to be listened to again and again... and again. As one of my favorite rock albums of all time I would certainly put Pink Floyd in the pantheon of "rock gods" along with The Doors, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin amongst other 1960s and 1970s bands. The Dark Side of the Moon was produced in an era when rock bands had more room to express their creativity and more room for improvisation and experimentation than today. The big music companies did not have as much of a commercial strangle hold on the creative process back then as they do these days with their desire to use bands as a vehicle only for making money and sales. Bands in the 60s and 70s where more radical, and non conformist and they would not easily toe the line set by big business executives. Rock 'n' roll has I'm sorry to say been co-opted and commercialized to such an extent in the age of trashy TV shows like MTV, Australian or American Idol that I fear it can't be saved, not to say that there aren't some cool modern bands out there making the music they want to. Much of the music of this early era hasn't dated and is timeless and wonderful to hear and listen to. If you're going to start collecting the Pink Floyd albums I suggest you start with The Dark side of the Moon followed by Wish You Were Here, Meddle and The Wall. They are all available in re-mastered editions and Dark Side of the Moon has been put into the SACD format, so the clarity is amazing. Lose yourself!!!

5+ STAR SACD, 2 star CD.......2007-07-18

The SACD stereo and 5.1 surround versions of Dark Side of the Moon are the only way currently available to experience this album as Pink Floyd intended it to be heard. If you don't have an SACD player or a DVD player that plays SACDs and don't intend to buy one, don't buy this album. The regular CD version sounds better. The CD layer on this is too compressed and too loud and might be OK in a noisy car with the windows open, but forget about it on even a low quality home system. I say this as someone who loves Dark Side of the Moon.

I have thought that Dark Side of the Moon is one of the finest albums ever made for over 30 years. I have 2 copies of the British SQ Quad version, an unopened backup and a copy I play on rare occasions. I also have one opened and 2 still-sealed Stereo LP pressings. All 5 of these are British Harvest pressings circa 1977. I also have an opened and a sealed Mobile Fidelity LP pressing, and my original American Capital pressing. In my opinion the late 70s British Stereo pressings beat all comers. The MFSL is crisper and has more detail but, fatally, less atmosphere. But it is a good second choice and occasionally a good alternate listen. The British Quad pressing has cleaner, quieter surfaces than the American Capital and is clearly a different (but inferior) mix, which makes for an interesting alternate listen on a rare occasion, but the sound quality and mix are actually better on the American Capital. If you are listening for sound quality, the SQ is a poor fourth among these 4 versions. If you want quad or surround, any of the other 3 played through Dynaquad or Dolby Surround some other ambiance recovery arrangement gives a much more satisfying experience. My comments on British pressings are limited to late 1970s pressings. I say this because I picked up a British stereo pressing of Wish You Were Here about 1986 and it sounds muffled compared to my Japanese stereo and British Quad pressings from the 70s, so I wouldn't vouch for later British pressings, though it is possible they may be satisfactory on Dark Side. The British Quad pressing of Wish You Were Here stands with the British Stereo pressing of Dark Side in terms of sound quality and quality of listening experience. The mix is different from and superior to the stereo version of Wish You Were Here, whether played back in stereo or in quad (and I wish Sony would release it on SACD).

Because my LPs sounded so good I never bothered to get CD versions of most of Pink Floyd, though I did pick up the Mobile Fidelity Gold CD of Dark Side, and later the Doug Sax remastered CD Box set, Shine On, which includes many but not all of the albums. I occasionally listen to some of them but mostly I still listen to the vinyl versions. Except...

The SACD. In addition to the lousy sounding CD layer, you have 2 choices on the SACD layer, Stereo, or a new 5.1 channel mix from the original multi-track analog masters. Earlier I said that late 70s British Stereo LP pressings beat all comers. Let me qualify that. The stereo SACD version equals it. It is very difficult to hear any difference between my always carefully played 1977 British Stereo pressing and the SACD stereo tracks (except there is some very slight surface noise on the LP--but it is not yet objectionable enough to make me break the seal on one of my other copies). Old British stereo pressings are basically going to be impossible to find. This is a worthy substitute. There is also the new 5.1 channel mix. If you like surround sound you'll love this. I love surround sound and listen to most stereo sources with Dynaquad passive ambiance recovery. This new surround mix is about equal to the stereo mix but different, exchanging a little more clarity for a little less of the mysterious. It is a worthy alternative (unlike the old SQ version). I listen to both.

So buy this SACD while it is still available if you like this music. If you don't have an SACD player, don't listen to it yet. But get yourself one of the universal DVD players that plays SACD (and DVD-A, too, preferably) and you are in for a treat. And some of the dedicated SACD players sound even better. Let me repeat: the SACD stereo and 5.1 surround versions of Dark Side of the Moon are the only way currently available to experience this album as Pink Floyd intended it to be heard.

Score composer Howard Shore has informed this first installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy with his distinctly modern sensibilities. Revolving loosely around a brief, heroic brass theme, this epic is infused with a powerful rhythmic thrust and a musical range that encompasses centuries (from the Renaissance pastoralism of "Concerning Hobbits" to the fiery, Prokofiev-influenced drama of "A Knife in the Dark"). Key to the score's sense of mystery and magical place are the rich choral passages that are interspersed throughout, some so ominously gothic they make The Phantom Menace's "Duel of the Fates" sound almost sunny by comparison. The music is good but the movie is better.......2007-04-10

I really enjoyed the 3 series of The Lord of the Rings movie so I wanted the music. The soundtracks are good but if you like the movie the soundtracks watch the movie. They remind you of certain parts in the movie like the song Concerning Hobbits. The song is whimsical. Enyna has a great voice, very haunting. The Ring Goes South is another favorite of mine. I can enjoy these soundtracks as classical or dramatic music. I bought them because I loved the Lord of the Rings which has many similarities to Braveheart. Bravery, courage, strength, honesty, selflessness, love and other good human qualities people try to attain and admire them in the people and movies they view.

A grand sountrack..........2007-01-10

One of Howard Shore's best soundtracks around. The music is strong enough to tell its own separate story apart from FOTR. You will never tire of the heart-pounding excitement from The Bridge of Kazaad-Dum track.

Lord of the Rings Original Soundtracks, films 1 and 3.......2006-11-08

Having made an earlier mistake of buying 2 C.D.'s which were not original soundtrack, I can truthfully say these are the best. If you are a Lord of the Rings fan, look no further - no one does it better than The London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer Howard Shore. You will be back in Middle Earth reliving all those wonderful scenes. I bought only The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King from Amazon.com because I already had the Two Towers from Amazon.co.uk and I would recommend all three - magical.

What can I say that hasn't already been said about Howard Shore's magnificent score for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy? A soundtrack can define the whole atmosphere of a film, and this fully orchestrated work certainly does that with sweep, splendor and wonder, alternately humanizing (hobbit-izing?) the characters, imbuing the landscape with magic and capturing the world-shaking impact of events of mythic proportions. And this was no easy task considering the iconoclastic status of the story and the superb quality of Peter Jackson's filmmaking. This is a truly a soundtrack for the ages--a fitting accompaniment to a film for the ages! Every aspect of life, from the extreme to the mundane, is captured in this music. Listening to it can make every remembered moment of the movie come alive again in your mind, from the most horrific battle to the smallest moment of humor or kindness. I think this first one is my favorite of the three "Lord of the Rings" soundtracks. I enjoy the juxtaposition of the lighter moments, like the sweet, simple hobbit theme, with the grander and more menacing sections of the music. (That despite the fact that said hobbit theme begins exactly like the first phrase of the Protestant hymn "This Is My Father's World," which prompts me to think of the hobbits trouping off to Sunday school every time I hear it. But now when I hear the hymn, I think of Lord of the Rings, so I suppose all's fair!) What impressed me most as I watched "The Fellowship of the Ring" was how scary the music was when the hobbits were being pursued. Those relentless drums and eerily screaming drums made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, even though I knew the story like the back of my hand and knew for a fact that the poor little heroes would manage to escape. But the music truly made me wonder otherwise ... Now that's good composition! And the fact that the filmmakers chose to include background music in so many of the scenes, almost continuously ... well, that's just good filmmaking! The other impressive thing about Howard Shore's score is how the voicing and repeating motifs tie the whole thing together, like the finest of symphonies. The total effect is utterly convincing and utterly transporting. Peter Jackson chose well when he picked Shore as his score writer. Very, very well! Be sure to get the scores from the other two movies in the trilogy as well - "The Two Towers" and "Return of the King." They seem to be available in no end of different packagings, including ones with bonus DVDs about the creation of the score. Also, make sure to get the extended edition DVDs of the movie itself, with hours and hours of fascinating commentaries and behind-the-scenes documentaries about the making of the films. Truly a bargain at any price! And for more seminal soundtracks, try John Williams' defining scores for the "Star Wars" series and Basil Poledouris's spectacular score for the original "Conan the Barbarian."

For me, the music of the first sequel is my favourite since this is also the sequel that I prefer in the trilogy (I remember being blown away by the quality of this movie, the actors, the setting, the action scenes, the special effects, the moving relationships between all the characters and of coourse the music)
I think that the other CDs are a bit repetitive once you've got this one, even if I still like the music of the second soundtrack 'The Two Towers'. As for the 3rd sequel, I seldom listen to it as there is only one track that I like, 'The Return of the King'.
Now, this first CD of the trilogy is actually very good. Thanks to Enya, it is haunting and the songs are beautiful. There are a few eery but melodious songs like 'The Council of Elrond', 'Lothlorien', 'May it Be'. I love the change of tempo, the balance between fast and slow movements in 'A Knife in the Dark', 'Flight to the ford', and 'Amon Hen' which is my favourite piece (the Death of Boromir) with the oboe sound mixed with the beat of the drums and finaly the haunting voice of the singer. Track 17 is also worth listening. I like this CD because you've got different tempos and melodies and Anya is a great singer to me. But I also enjoy listening to Emiliana Torrini's song 'Gollum's Song'in the second soundtrack...

Album Description

A beautiful, dance inspiring international debut. The first track sounds like a spaghetti western chase scene. Two songs later they stretch into feel-good territory with David Byrne making a guest vocal appearance, singing an English version of the Brazilian classic "Asa Branca". Cibo Matto's Miho Hatori joins the band to sing "Paraiba", a Japanese version of a Luis Gonzaga song originally recorded in the '50s. And on the album's sublime climax, Bebel Gilberto joins the group to sing a version of "Wandering Swallow", a song originally released by Peggy Lee.

I have been searching for a new band. By new I mean amazing, not known by the entire world (yet; and I stress yet), basically a band I can adore. I believe I have found this in Forro in the Dark. I hope they start touring soon so I can rock out to their amazing sounds.

Afro Brazilian Zydeco party.......2007-03-06

David Byrne wrote an article in the New York Times a few years ago which he titled "Why I hate World Music". The gist of the article, as I recall, was that "World Music" is just hopelessly inadequate to describe all the different genres that are lumped in with the term.

Not long ago, he described this album as a Brazilian Zydeco of sorts. But "Brazilian Zydeco" is woefully inadequate to describe the genre, if there is a genre, that this album fits into. To be sure, there are some zydeco references (or are there Forro references in Zydeco?), and maybe it goes without saying that the record has mostly an Afro Brazilian feel. I'm sure my own category as described in the caption of this review is inadequate too.

At any rate, one of the many cool things about Brazilian music is how big name musicians will play on each others' records, record each others' songs, and show up unexpectedly and play live with one another. There's some of that going on here, with giants like Bebel Gilberto helping out, not to mention Mr. Byrne his own big bad self. With his inimitable voice, he gives the Brazilian standard "Asa Branca" a brand new feel, sung in English.

As to the leader of the band, Mauro Refosco has played just about every percussion instrument known to man, and probably a few more, over the years. For Byrne fans, Mauro is the bug eyed guy with the big grin on his face you've seen on stage on Byrne's last few tours, beating the living crap out of everything in sight. Smokey Hormel, of Beck fame, handles the bass and some guitars on Forro in the Dark.

All in all, a great party record. I suspect its intoxicating sounds will be emanating near backyard swimming pools and beach bars from Atlanta to Ipanema to Marbella beginning this summer and for years to come.

A Must For Your Collection.......2006-12-25

If you are not familiar with the Forro style of music, this is a great introduction and is very accessible. There are several instrumental songs that create interesting movie-like effects and moods ranging from fast-paced chase scenes to mysterious investigations. The songs with vocals are performed by the band members themselves as well as a number of guest performers singing in several languages. Notably, David Byrne sings two songs (in English), including the title track. There is no language barrier to worry about - the songs and the vocalists convey the humour, melancholy, and overall spirit of each song beautifully. For something a little different than what you may usually listen to, for the excellent musicianship, and for the unique mix of songs and styles, I highly recommend this CD.

Forro wonder in Nublu.......2006-12-09

This is a very colorful album. There are melodies that you can whistle to, playful harmonies and all feels unbounded and flexible especially in their live performance Nublu bar, wednesday nights. They have great musicians joining them and you can never guess who'll be there. It really worths checking it out.

A knockout performance .......2006-05-28

Like so many of the reviewers here I am not an opera aficionado. But I sensed immediately the night I saw this concert on television that this was one of those 'remarkable' artistic events. Domingo and Pavarotti both have such strength and beauty in their voices that they overwhelm. Carreras adds flavor and enthusiasm.
One of the most remarkable music performances I have seen.

You can read the technical information about the contents of this CD above. That is not what this review is about. I became intrested in opera about 1 1/2 years ago because of happening upon Mario Lanza. Since then, I have experienced many great truly operatic voices, including the "King," Pavarotti.
If you are just discovering opera, suffice it to say; Buy this album!!! It was the concert that launched the 3 Tenors phenomenon. It is full of uplifting, heart- tugging favorites, and you will find yourself listening to it over and over. Buy the dvd as well. It imparts absolute electricity! I am a young pianist and vocalist, and this concert is truly inspiring to me! You won't regret one penny you spend on this!

Great singing from the three tenors.......2005-06-23

This cd is a must-have for anyone interested in opera - or beautiful singing. And when you're at it - why don't buy the dvd from the concert? It will make you appreciate the cd even more.

First of all I have to comment on the editorial review of this cd. I felt the reviewer is "belittling" José Carreras here by saying he's one step behind the big brothers and his singing isn't as captivating as that of the big boys.....?!?!? Of course I can only speak for myself, but I feel she's way out of line. And I'm starting to wonder if she's been listening to the cd at all? In my opinion you have to be dead not to be touched by his rendition of "Lamento di Federico" and "L'improvviso". If anybody can deliver a line it has to be Carreras. When it comes to his interpretation of "Granada" even conductor Zubin Mehta was gobsmacked. Watching the dvd you can see him putting down his baton and applauding. He even steps down from his podium to hug José.

I have to say I'm not too keen on the two other tenors, although I have to admit I loved Pavarotti's "Torna a Surriento" and "Rondine al nido". The thing about Pavarotti is that he has a great singing technique and he's also in possession of this "push-button" which make him sing a lot of high notes, but that alone isn't enough to stir emotion.

As for Domingo, even if he's giving it all in every song, and his "No puede ser" was great,I think he's a bit too much on the nasal side. He's okay when they all perform together, but his "E lucevan le stelle" is sending shivers down my spine - and not of delight. I'm practically unable to sit still and listen to his solos. If you really want "fire and pain" you should check out Carreras in the Tosca-recording from -80, or his recording from -76. It's really breathtaking and I promise you'll end up in tears!

At the end of this concert the three tenors perform a medley together. Their voices blend perfectly and it's powerful to listen to them giving it all. A lot of people are talking about their mis-pronounciations. I for one, think it only adds to the charm of the performers. Pavarotti has some problems with the English songs (okay, big problems..), Domingo stumbles in the words in the beginning of "Wien Wien nur du allein", and (this you'll see in the dvd) in the same song Carreras is actually reading the text from a piece of paper as he's singing and his facial expressions when getting his head around the German words are really hilarious. O sole mio as an encore is fabulous when Pavarotti pushes his button and shakes out all his high notes.... And I love it when the two other join forces and repeat his stunt to perfection.

All in all this is a wonderful album. And well worth 5 stars.... José alone gets 10 stars!!!

This CD is terrific on so many levels. In celebration of one of the world's great sporting events - the World Cup of football (soccer to us stateside), three great tenors and one masterful conductor (Zubin Mehta) were brought together in one of the world's great cities - Rome -- for a special evening that we are blessed to have been able to listen to again and again.

The concert was held during the World Cup in 1990 at the Baths of Caracella, which are ruins of the once great Roman baths. In this beautiful setting Luiciano Pavrotti, Jose Carreas and Placido Domingo came together for one of the best CD's ever made.

The singing is exquisite. The passion of the crowd in this live performance should equal the reaction of the listener. This is art at its highest level. It is a celebration of great music, not just of opera, but in my opinion, the soaring human spirit. What power to move the soul! You don't need to be an opera fan to enjoy this music. If you like any kind of music, you cannot help but be affected by the power of this special evening. And what an evening, those in attendance were lucky to have been there!!

The casual listener will already know some of these arias, as they are from some the great operas of all time. However, I believe even the most hardenend opera fan, unless he or she is a real stiff, cannot be helped to be but moved by this music.

It is heavenly! I recommend this CD to you, because in my humble opinion, it will bring sunshine to your heart!!! : )

It's not by happenstance that "Come Back to Me," a fairly candid cover from X's Under the Big Black Sun, is the kickoff to Sarah Borges's second album, nor that the feisty country-singing Bostonian would find inspiration from a 25-year-old punk album. Actually, despite a host of twangy guitars and songs about love, longing, and retribution, Borges admits to having a greater fondness for Exene Cervenka's caterwauling--and '80s and '90s indie rock--than any vocal tutorial from Loretta Lynn. Pulsating tracks such as "Lonely Town" and "Diablito," and the poppy "Stop and Think It Over," tugged from the mold of the Go-Go's' Beauty and the Beat, are in debt to those influences without overshadowing what's left of the record: a rummage through the roots of American music. Borges lays down the honky-tonk ("False Eyelashes"), dishes out the blues ("Open Up Your Back Door"), and two-steps her way through an admission of commitment, inquiring "How many ways can I say that I love you?" Superb Sarah.......2007-07-07

I was walking down the street in Seattle and heard a band playing at one of those lunch time concert things. The music is usually so bad at those shows that I run away, but this time I heard the loveliest voice echoing around concrete and glass "park." I was hooked. I wandered over to watch the band, and it was even better than I had hoped. Sarah and her top-notch band were exhausted from travel, but rockin' out and having so much fun that the crowd kept growing and growing. I bought the Diamonds in the Dark CD after the concert, and they're every bit as good in the studio as they are live. A rich, varied disc with a lot of heart. Buy it! You won't be disappointed.

Fasten your seat belts! You're in for a ride!.......2007-06-24

Whoa! Sarah roars back with another fantastic CD. Every song is great. A little country, a little punk. Pure pop for now people. Sarah played Fitzgeralds last weekend and she blew the roof off. Just unbelievable. There truly is no god if 'The Day We Met' isn't playing on every ipod by the end of the summer. Actually, any song on this CD could be a hit. It's a pleasure to hear 'Come Back to Me' again. I think Sarah played every song from her two records at Fitgeralds and it was easily one of the best and coolest shows I've ever seen. Whether she's wailing louder than her guitar onslaught or purring softly she is in full command. This is ROCK at its very best. Yesterday I heard Nick Lowe on the radio and he said that there is nothing new worth listening to. Someone give this guy a copy of this CD. Hell, Sarah could've been in Rockpile! Nick, do yourself a favor and check this out!

They have been consistently better........2007-07-10

If you are a fan of VNV Nation from the days of Praise the Fallen and Empires then about half of the tracks on this album are for you. However the other tracks are experiments in a trend that they have been following since Futureperfect. I am still not sure how I feel about this. I enjoy electronic music, but I feel that there is something amiss with Futureperfect and Matter + Form. All the same, I would have to say that for the die-hard VNV fan this will definitely be a good addition to your collection.

I like it........2007-06-26

I don't think this album is nearly as good as Empires, but certainly don't think it's crap. I have grown to love VnV Nation. I will admit that sometimes I wish that I had a clearer understanding of what the lyrics are about, but I think I get it. I have my interpretation and I guess that's the only interpretaion that matters. VnV Nation make excelent Future pop music that is great music to drive to, dance to, or play around your house while your cleaning. High energy trance beats with pasionate singing and dark atmosphere. Great production by Ronan Harris, and another good album. I'm not dissapointed, but there are quite a few people who are.

This is one of those bands that pisses people off because they have become populur in the "underground" scene. The truth be, VnV Nation have never released a radio hit in the States, never a top 40 video, never a Rolling Stone cover, never, never, never...nada! This band keeps pumping out solid electro/synth pop albums that pack out every dance floor in the goth/industrial club scene accross the map. This album is no exception to thier greatness. All of the songs are deep, emotionally charged, introspective, metaphoric, and classic future pop anthems that you want to play over and over again in your CD player. This is the most important band in the entire future pop genre!!!!!! (Just in case you didn't allreday know).

Just a great, album.......2007-07-09

had gotten this album on cassette from a friend years ago. Listened until the tape wore out. Finally figured out which record it was and just purchased it. Wow, it still sounds as good as the first time I heard it. What a great collection of songs!
Its not the hits that are on the first greatest hits, but I think they are better songs actually.

The first time I heard Cat Stevens, I knew I had found music for me. I was listening to his early work - 1970 - 1972, the Harold and Maude years. Something about the way his voice melds with his guitar and the meditative qualities of the performances made me connect to my own spirit. It is much like the way I felt the first time I heard the music of Alexi Murdoch on his album Four Songs and later when I first heard Alexi's song "Breathe" fromTime Without Consequence. I still get a similar feeling listening to this Cat Stevens cd today.

I rate this cd 5 stars because it has my two favorite Cat Stevens tunes, "If you Want to Sing Out, Sing Out", and "Trouble" as well as several others on the top of my list of favorites. This whole cd is highly listenable. It only has really good songs on it with that rich meditative quality that first attracted me to his music. If you want a collection of Cat Steven's work, this is the one I recommend most highly. For one of his original albums, I recommend Tea for the Tillerman. The only thing that could beat these two would be the soundtrack to the film Harold and Maude.

After the long hiatus since his days performing as Cat Stevens, I am glad to see that Yusuf Islam has come back to his guitar. I heard a story that he realized that it was Muslims who introduced the West to Guitar and thus reembraced his instrument. For those of you who thought he was forever lost to us, check out his new cd as Yusuf Islam, "An Other Cup" and I think you will find yourself reconnected to where he left off.

The actual original soundtrack recording from the film was only released
in Japan (go figure) and do you think we can get a copy of it here in the
U.S.????

Harold and Maude fans, Cat Stevens fans, this is as good as it gets for
us in the U.S. A Harold and Maude Soundtrack w/ a few extra tracks thrown
in for good measure. Wigwam was released in the U.S. as a single at the
time the CD was released...they'd have been better off and more successful
releasing one of the lesser known tracks from Harold and Maude.

Like rediscovering an old friend.......2005-12-27

Envision, for a second, if you will, finding your high school yearbook somewhere completely unexpected. You open it up, assuming you'll find the old familiar faces, only to discover the black & whites are now full color audio and video. The sounds are so fresh, each note is so clear, each syllable so precise, you begin to wonder whether you'd ever heard these songs to their fullest extent.

I know no selection will ever be complete. That's inevitable, natural, and expectable: that's precisely why they're called selections. But each of the tracks -from "Katmandu" to "Daytime", even the self-deprecating "(I never wanted) To be a star", and the classic "Father and Son"- shares a renewed vitality, an unexpected spark, an intimacy that makes you wonder what it was you'd been listening to all these years.

For the absolutist and obsesive collector (i.e. those who've got to have ALL the recording and versions of their favorite artists), "Footsteps" may be a little overkill.

But for the rest of us, who enjoy a good afternoon with Cat -and that have earned out way to a more than decent sound equipment not to be shared or touched by anybody else- this is an album worth re-purchasing, if only for the joy of hearing Cat Stevens they way it was meant to be heard.

And I can assure you, without a doubt, that you'll be singing along, at the top of your lungs, before you even realize it. If that's not what a reissue is for, then I've been buying them under the wrong pretences.

John Williams' lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas' beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. (Is this really the end of Star Wars? Can't Lucas and Williams work together on a prequel to these prequels? Let us hope so, and that Jar Jar Binks is nowhere near it.) As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film in many a moon, the soundtrack itself is more fun, more evil, more nasty and bumpy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will necessarily be familiar to any fan of the series, from the "Imperial March" to the main theme. It's remarkable how stirring the latter can be, no matter how many times you've heard it, and even for those who do not have all their money invested in S.W. memorabilia. There is a lot of new music here, and the lush, extensive range of both Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra is on display, most notably in the menacing, percolating "General Grievous" and the rousing "New Hope" end theme. --Mike McGonigal

The bonus dvd with this soundtrack was the reason I purchased. I enjoy film soundtracks, and science fiction, but this dvd was a real highlight for me. I got the soundtrack cd out of the local library. The cd was missing from the case, but I found this wonderful dvd instead that I went out to purchase later.

With optional segments of dialog from Ian McDiarmid, this film is a stunning visual and musical overview of the full epic story of episodes I-VI of Star Wars. For those of us who felt that eps. IV-VI fell short of our expectations, this film presents them well as parts of the whole story. The Musical Journey also stands as a summary of the entire SW opus for someone who is not familiar with the Star Wars characters and plot. Highly recommended.

Not one of his bests, but very close.......2007-05-21

The Episode III soundtrack is very good. Not great, but very, very good. You can tell that Williams is getting old, but he still manages to weave together a very memorable score.

My favorite tracks are "Battle of the Heroes," "Anakin's Betrayal," Palpatine's teachings, "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan," and the "Immolation Scene."
The others are very good as well, but these are especially nice. "Battle of the Heroes" is Dual of the Fates for Revenge of the Sith. "Anakin's Betrayal" is a very sad track that is, in my opinion, one of William's most powerful pieces. "Palpatine's Teachings" is really, really neat. It's very dark and moody, a perfect piece for the evil emperor. The only weird thing is the end. "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan" is the action piece that plays during the battles of Anakin and Obi-Wan, and Yoda and the Emperor. Finally, "The Immolation Scene" is another sad piece, even more so than "Anakin's Betrayal."

Although I really like this CD, there are some things that are missing (as usual). First, the whole sequence where the droids are looking for Obi-Wan after he was shot. You see Obi-Wan in his ship with Senator Organa on the Hologram (or whatever it is), and Obi-Wan says that his clones turned on him. That was some pretty awesome music that OF COURSE was left out of the CD. Then there was Dual of the Fates in the movie, but completely absent from the CD. And probably the most annoying was that whole piece of music before Obi-Wan and Anakin fight. It was so touching and sad and I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY LEFT IT OUT! Absolutely amazing. Also, did anyone notice that some little bits were cut out? For example, in Anakin vs. Obi Wan, they cut out about a second or two of choir. What?! What the heck is with that? It's when Anakin is running on the long thing and jumps on the droid on the lava. Also, there was some pretty cool drumming when you see Yoda and the Emperor fighting, and you can see the whole stadium (the big room). There's also drumming in "Enter Lord Vader" that is muted in the soundtrack.

Oh well...if I'm going to collect movie scores, I'm going to have to get used to the fact that in almost all cases there's not going to be every bit of music. I've experienced this in both Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park I (there was very little left out on this score), and almost everything else. At the moment, I'm just waiting for the 22nd, for the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 soundtrack. It's gonna be amazing.

John Williams' finest work.......2007-04-20

There is little more I can say that hasn't already been said about the soundtrack to Episode 3, especially what Amazon contributor Dan Mohr wrote in his review of the soundtrack on 2/2/2006. His review captured almost all the thoughts, feelings, and emotions I had when I first listened to the soundtrack, and was, IMO, the best review of John Williams' greatest masterpiece.

Having said that, I will say that few soundtracks have ever so perfectly captured the underlying emotional currents of their respective movie; in the case of ROTS, the contemporaneous tragedies of Anakin's fall to the Dark Side, the extermination of the Jedi, and the rise of the oppressive Empire. The listener is confronted with the depth and totality of the evil that has beset the entire galaxy to a degree that the film could not reach in only 2 hours.

Bravo, Dan Mohr, and BRAVO John Williams!

A Great Conclusion to the Prequel Trilogy.......2007-04-07

This is a great work of art. I rank it 4th among Star Wars soundtracks after A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and The Phantom Menace. I had a hard deciding which I thought was better, The Phantom Meance or Revenge of the Sith, but I decided that The Phantom Menace lays the foundation for so much that is in this soundtrack and is thus the more masterful work. But that doesn't mean that this score still isn't great. Every piece is a thrill to listen to and pace never lets up. "Battle of the Hereos" is an amazing piece and the rendition of the "Funeral Theme" from Episoded I captures the film's tragety magnificently. Also I do not think John Williams could have portrayed the Jedi's extinction more perfectly than he did in "Anakin's Betrayal". This is without a doubt the best score of 2005 and one of the best of the decade.

Williams is slumming it.......2007-04-01

Williams's score for Revenge of the Sith is almost entirely overbearing, lacking any emotional subtlety. The music is overcomplicated and even a bit confusing, especially in the tracks that correspond to action sequences in the movie. His overuse of choral tracks and vocals is too bombastic and irritating to be listened to without the explosions and laser blasts of the soundtrack to soften them. (Yes, this music is actually softened by the sounds of warfare.) Worst of all, much of the music has simply been lifted from earlier scores. At times his self-imitation was so blatant that I actually wondered whether the editor who had complied this score had made a mistake and I was listening to The Empire Strikes Back or A New Hope. Also suffers from not including the entire score, in some cases cutting out musical segues in obvious and awkward ways.
