The first Mark Mothersbaugh / Wes Anderson collaboration.......2005-05-27

I'm in the mood for hyperbole so keep that in mind before reading this. This first collaboration between two amazing artists (who, for the unitiated, have gone on to work together on Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and most recently The Life Aquatic) this is also one of the first Mothersbaugh soundtracks of "any" kind. In some ways it is the most complete of Mark's scores to appear on CD, but I think that is due to the other 3 films reliance on "songs". It's definitely my favorite of his scores if not my favorite of Wes' films (that would be Rushmore).

Hopefully they continue to collaborate as I think they will be as synonymous as Hitchcock and Bernard Hermann or Steven Spielberg and John Williams (or for that matter George Lucas and John Williams). It's impossible to think of any of those classic films (as well as Wes Anderson's ) without the music accompaniment of their collaborator. This is no more true with Bottle Rocket (the film would be much less without the music and this is admitted by Anderson himself in a small blurb on the insert). As great as the "songs" in Anderson's film are (and scene appropriate at that), I don't purchase his soundtracks for the "songs", I buy them for the Mark Mothersbaugh tracks.

Now about the "songs" on Bottle Rocket. There are only 4 (two by Rene Touzet - the Spanish songs you'll remember from the film), "Zorro Is Back" by Oliver Onions(!) and The Proclaimers "Over and Done With". All four fit with the mood of the film but like all mixed soundtracks (songs mixed in with the score) I wish the songs came last or first so they would not break up the mood of the instrumentals. My favorite of the four is definitely "Zorro Is Back".

One of my few complaints about the disc is that so many of the tracks seem to cut short. I understand that they are movie cues, but for many I wish they had been extended (this was probably financially unfeasible for the label). And that brings me to a common complaint about soundtracks. In most cases "missing tracks" - especially songs by popular artists -- are missing because of money. The aritist in question (say The Rolling Stones featured in Royal Tenenbaums) want way too much dough for their song to appear on the disc. Soundtracks typically do not sell well (there is perhaps one or two exceptions per year out of the hundreds that are released), and putting some obscure Rolling Stone song on the soundtrack is not going to boost sales enough to justify the expense of obtaining the rights. I think the common belief is that somebody is doing something scandalous when they leave off track(s), but it's all about money, folks.

The most indispensible tracks (for me) are Rocky, Snowflake Music/Mr. Henry's Chop Shop, and track 17 which has a word in the title I'm not sure Amazon allows in their reviews. All of the music is worthwhile ranging from keyboards to Spanish guitars. If you've never seen the film (shame on you!) go rent or buy it now. But if you have and are unsure about the soundtrack purchase, don't hesitate (especially if you're familiar with the other three films).

Having been alive (and music aware) when Mothersbaugh was the creative force behind Devo, it is ironic to me that it took Wes Anderson and his great films to help me discover Mark and then by association return to Devo. My ignorance of Devo's genius was then revealed to me! For the other recent converts, I highly recommend the 2-disc Life Aquatic and the 20 minute featurette on Mark and his collaboration with Wes Anderson.

Missing Tracks.......2004-04-08

If we had the missing tracks...I'd give mssrs. Wilson & Anderson a five. Easy. The song from the "house robbery," one of the best scenes in the movie, is "Seven and Seven Is" by Arthur Lee & LOVE (from their album "Da Capo"); the Ramones did cover the song on "Acid Eaters," but it's not the version used in BR.

Actually, the song from the house robbery is "7 & 7's", by the Ramones from the album Acid Eaters. Another song unlisted and also hard to find is a Love cover-song called "Anything", performed by the Damned.

What rock is supposed to be!.......2004-06-27

Every song on this CD rocks my face off. There are no "filler" songs. The lyrics (especially on the songs co-written by Steve Taylor) are clever and profound, and work perfectly with the music of Jamie and Tony. Most of these songs have a more lasting and God-glorifying message than most of the stuff taught from the pulpit nowadays.

Why Guardian, WHY?.......2004-03-02

Guardian is my absolute favorite band, but what were they thinking releasing this album? No offense, but it stinks. It can't compare to 'Fire & Love' or even 'Buzz'. Leave this one alone...

Very tight and modern sounding.......2001-01-21

When I first bought Bottle Rocket about a year ago, for about 6 months it was pretty much all I listened too. It's that good! It's alot tighter than their other cd's, and Jamie sings alot less grungy. But the musicianship, and songwriting is still just as good if not better than their older cd's. Songs like Revelation, and Savation still have that live intesity that makes Guardian such a great band. And other songs like Are we Feeling Comfortable Yet, and Coffee Can have awsome guitar effects that really fit nicely in the songs. The Guitar playing is great as usual. Tony is without a doubt one of the best guitar players in the world. And Jamie is still a power house on the vocals, pouring out emotion in catchy songs. David's bass playing is also exelent. It really seems to fit the music on this CD. Karl's drumming is alot simpler on Bottle Rocket than on any other Guardian album. But this just adds to the tightness of the music. Sometimes the hardest thing for a drummer to do is play easy drum parts that make the songs sound good. An all around great CD! If you're a Nirvana, STP, Smashing Pumpkins, or Soundgarden fan, or if you're just a fan of great rock music, get this CD!!

One of Guardian's best.......2000-12-30

After being a pop-metal outfit in the early 90's, the changing music scene encouraged Guardian to try some different things stylistically. "Swing, Swang, Swung" was more acoustically based, but "Buzz" brought the boys back to their hard-rock roots. As different as "Swing, Swang, Swung" was from "Miracle Mile" and as "Buzz" was from "Swing, Swang, Swung", so is "Bottle Rocket" different everything else Guardian has done. The focus centers on a more modern rock sound, complete with bass and guitar effects, that works very well.

The lead-off track, "Are We Feeling Comfortable Yet?" exhibits the new sound with some interesting guitar-synth sounds and David Bach's bass, also mixed in with some synthesizer, setting the foreshadowing of a rock explosion. The ever present lead-guitar of Tony Palacios blazes into his patented playing while Karl Ney lays down a strong pace on his drum kit. Jamie Rowe demonstrates he can sing well outside the reigns of heavy metal.

Without critiqueing all 14 songs, suffice it to say that the recording demonstrates the desired tightness of a well rehearsed band. The lyrics showcase Steve Taylor's creative genius with the American vernacular, and the theme of the CD points to God and salvation through Jesus Christ. Some songs may seem silly ("Bottle Rocket" & "Coffee Can"), but pay attention to the message in the humor. Sarcasm and wit can be excellent vehicles for carrying the message to the listener.

Hard-rocking.......1999-10-02

This album is a good combination of heavy rock and Christian lyrics. My personal favorite lyrics of the CD: "All those fashion victims seem so aggravated Going with the flow is very overrated I got a revelation...I'm a new creation, baby, the world can't bring me down." Good music to crank up really loud while driving around with the windows down.
