How About Some Live Go-Go?.......2003-10-24

Most Go-Go fans will attest that live music sounds better. But this compilation by Dj Flexx is mostly a Studio mix. It lacks the very essence of Go-Go, which is more than just call and response. But drum and percussion. That's what makes Go-Go so unique. The drum was outlawed during slavery and Go-Go brought it back hard. Dj Flexx brings a more hip-hop feel to this CD. And it lacks the star power to make it a success. There are a few tracks with Chuck Brown, Big Tony, 911, & Backyard that make the high points. Sadly to say there is a lack of new Live Go-Go CD's to buy on the internet. Which puts Go-Go fans that don't live in DC in a precarious position.

Best known as the leader of the Gospel Gangstas, DJ Dove actually is one of the founding members of gospel rap pioneers SFC. Back after a bit of a break and still sounding hot, this is a mighty leap forward from 'Devil's Worst Nightmare'. There's plenty of versatility here as he works with his fellow rappers to integrate elements of soul, hip hop and rock together to make something fresh. For example Thousand Foot Krutch's "Set It Off" takes an alternative rock riff and builds into something intense and powerful. At the other extreme, you have high powered interactive preaching live in front of a church crowd on "Wanna Get High" before he embarks on the most hilarious call and response I've heard in ages - Everybody say J..J..J..J..J..Jesus!" - make sure you check that one out! Rapper from Thousand Foot Krutch goes all out on "Sonshine", a groove built around the riff and chorus of Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love" proving that it's possible to recycle anything! Elsewhere you get soulful stuff on "Where Ya At?" and a groovy piece of classic funk underpins "Rhyme Animal" before it breaks into a hardcore chorus.
