At times, The Reindeer Room Volume II is the hippest Christmas CD of the year, even if you're not into techno dance arrangements with programmed drum tracks and odd, schizoid effects. There are inspired arrangements and production throughout much of the 15-track collection, dominated by Billy Paul Williams featuring Nicole Henry, whose voice through a vocoder can tantalize and twist even such normally solid fare as "The Holly and the Ivy," or "Good King Wenceslas." Half the fun is listening for the acute production values on cuts like Charles Afton's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," which throws a fuzzy, retro-psychedelic scrim over this Nutcracker staple. But it's DJ Trax's "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (with vocalist Anna Hurst) and LED vs. Panophonic's unforgettable "My Favorite Things" that are worth the price of the disc. The percussive bass and grooving guitar lines in the former and the pristine mix of organ, vibraphone, and a clattering drum track in the latter make for Christmas music listening on a whole other level. Besides, when was the last time you bought a smart holiday mix that also featured a bonus DVD/Yule log video in 5.1 Surround Sound? --Martin Keller

3 out of 5 stars If your Hip.......2007-01-11

Not for the traditional Christmas music lover. It's hip and is a neat spin on some classics but nothing I would listen too beyond a cocktail Christmas party.

5 out of 5 stars Great modern holiday background music.......2004-12-25

New to the chill-out phenomenon, I've spent the last year accumulating various compilations. I have to admit, however, that it never occurred to me that there might be a holiday chill compilation out there, until I stumbled upon this in a local store. I took a chance, and picked it up. Now it's my favorite holiday album! Great for driving, relaxing by the fire (and if you don't have a fire, it comes with a DVD of a roaring fireplace!), opening presents, and generally enjoying yourself, this is a very well-paced compilation, with enough energy to keep you going, and some great new and interesting interpretations of the classics you've already heard thousands of times. Great for all audiences, I highly recommend this to anyone who likes chill, or just wants something other than the same-old same-old to play this holiday season.

Happy Holidays!

5 out of 5 stars Christmas, but cooler.......2004-12-07

It's easy to cheese covers of classics into the stratophere of painful kitsch, especially when you're talking electronic grooves or Christmas standards. Combine the two and you have the potential for disaster -- a disaster which has been fully realized time and time again. But this collection avoids the kitsch and overdone synth lines to come up with reinterpretations that are simultaneously cool, playful, rich, and festive.

The Billy Paul Williams feat. Nicole Henry tracks and Charles Afton's Sugar Plum Ferry are the best of the bunch, and are already in danger of getting worn down after a week in my car. Some of the tracks are forgettable, but none will leave you embarrased if you put them on during the holiday party or while opening presents with the family.

5 out of 5 stars Reindeer Room 2 also has a bonus DVD!.......2003-11-18

I didn't notice this when I first bought it, but Reindeer Room 2 has a bonus DVD with most of the songs from the album playing over a fireplace with a blazing Yule log! Reminds me of when I was a kid in New York and we would tune the television to channel 11 (WPIX) on Christmas eve when the station would broadcast the Yule log for 24 hours.

Anyway, the music on Reindeer Room 2 is as good as volume one with several surprises like "Sou Gan" and "Hard Candy Christmas". And the Yule log DVD makes it a great package.

2 out of 5 stars Venison.......2007-02-13

I buy one or two christmas CDs every year and every once in awhile I get a stinker. This was one. I tried to like it. I liked the concept. It just did nothing for me.

4 out of 5 stars Good enough to listen all year round!.......2007-01-18

This is a great CD overall. A couple of tracks that I skip over but the rest are great. There are even 2 or 3 that I still listen too long after Christmas b/c they do not smack of Christmas specifically. My favourite is Christmas is Here (War is Over).

I plan to add Reindeer Room II to my collection this year!

5 out of 5 stars I'm very impressed..........2003-12-11

I heard this CD yesterday in a stationery shop and was immediately taken with it - I went on a mission and found it at a local shop and have been playing it ever since. I'm pretty much a traditionalist and I'm not a huge chillout fanatic but I have my share of Cafe del Mar CDs and I LOVE this CD. There are enough sample tracks to listen to it if you aren't sure and don't want to take my word for it, so what are you waiting for?

4 out of 5 stars Something new for Christmas.......2002-12-26

They were playing this in a store where I was Christmas shopping this month. I liked it enough to track down the manager and ask him to find out what it was. Unlike another reviewer, I've played it in both my laptop and in the big PC with the fancy speakers and it played just fine. It's spent more time in my car though and I think it will continue in there once the season is over. It's been a big hit with the teenage crowd in the family and we're tracking down more music like this now.

4 out of 5 stars to survive the Christmas season w/o all the sugar-coating..........2002-12-22

Being a fan of the OmLounge series of discs, I was naturally drawn to this sound when I heard it in my local small bakery one morning. If you are, like me, someone who has had it up to 'here' with the gooey Christmas sound that we are generally forced to endure year after year, this is a refreshing slice of the season. While we all might have good memories of some of the tunes from when we were little..they've been recycled a few too many times in the usual format. However, this album gives you many of them, but with a techo or latin-flavored 'lounge'-mellow mix. Can't say I'm thrilled with every single hit: don't much care for their version of 'Silent Night', but I think I'll be able to survive this a few more years of "the holiday season" in the "Reindeer Room".

3 out of 5 stars Chillout Room: Cool Grooves.......2005-07-04

Although there are other various artists chillout CD's available at an unusually expensive price tag, for mellow background music this CD is not bad for the price.

5 out of 5 stars Slown down and chill on this.......2004-04-29

I have purchased many CDs from Amazon and this one ranks very high in my collection. Its diverse but flows very well. I dont think the last song is fitting, but with the 11 other songs ahead of it, no complaints. Highly recommended if you are looking for downtempo or chillout type music. And given the price, you can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars THE PRICE IS RIGHT!!!.......2003-05-09

This was a very impressive CD for what I paid for it (under ten bucks). "The Chillout Room" is full of rare gems and musical unknowns. Songs 1,4,5,10 and 11 are my personal favorites and will definitely get you going! The rest of the songs on this CD aren't bad either--very moody, dreamy, dark and uplifting. If you're just out browsing the local music store like I often do (probably more than I should) and are just wanting to buy a CD, this is the one to get, pending it's availablity, of course.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent.......2002-07-12

Leave it to St. Clair Entertainment Group to bring very cool music that you can't find ANYWHERE to you on a decently priced CD. I wish i could just search for St. Clair Entertainment Group compilations... (hint hint amazon.com nudge nudge)

this particular compilation is sort of trip-hoppy drum 'n bassish stuff.

this album reminds me of the fight club soundtrack... but with lyrics and more abstract sounds.

Highlights on this cd (in my humble opinion)

Track 2: Noisy Crayons - October Weep
Track 7: One Mind's Eye - On The 6th Day... Let It Be So
Trakc 9: Lemonade Speedster - River Runs Deep

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Chillout album - a bit old though.......2001-11-25

I picked this up a while ago - actually almost exactly a year ago. I still enjoy this compilation although it's in a similar mold to "The Chillout Album" and "The Chillout Mix" and etc. It's very different though from the Ibiza/Cafe Del Mar chillout albums that were popular in the summer of 2001.

This album is pretty cool. It has a very dark feel to it, almost something that you would expect from the HedKandi series. It's also highlighted by an even more so heavy French feel to it, as is seen on the second CD of this double set which features DJ Cam. This album has a lot of the top artists: Other artists on the album are Smoke City, Craig Armstrong, Moby, Underworld, Morcheeba, Depeche Mode, Primal Scream, St Germain, Bent and Groove Armada.

I'd recommend it. It's one of the few chillout albums that I put can say I don't pop in for a song and then take out. It's got a nice flow, especially the second CD and is enjoyable - albeit a bit pricey.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2000-08-05

This album definately lives up to its title. I picked it up in Rotterdam while on vacation and took it back to my hotel in Amsterdam that night. We all know what happens (or should I say what COULD happen?) in Amsterdam and this excellent compilation was the absolute perfect soundtrack to my little adventure.

I highly recommend it if you like mellow, trance-inducing music. It is a great source to find new music as well. My favourite tracks are Smoke City's 'Underwater Love', Indian Ropeman's '66 Meters' and the remixed Depeche Mode song. Its too bad that Smoke City and Indian Ropeman are so bloody hard to find, even on line!

Verrry smooth- this is a nice collection of chilled tracks from a range of my favourite artists, Apollo 440, Leftfeild, Morcheeba and Orbital - great to read, study or just to listen to... leaves you with a warm, calm feeling while keeping enough pace and rhythm to keep you interested. Can't really compare to other chillout CDs as this is my first but if this is anything to go by I will defiantely be buying more!
