I first heard this in a club in Europe last year. We bought several volumes and took them with us on a vacation in St.Maarten. I could just float in the ocean and listen to this forever. If you're a fan of this genre, you won't be disappointed.

Cafe del mar to the rescue.......2000-08-15

If you have not had the chance to experience Cafe del Mar this is the album for you. A mix of the best of Cafe hits from Ibiza - I would highly recomend you get this - but be warned you will end up buying the rest of the yearly compilations!

Less Than a 1 Rating.......2005-09-19

Too bad there's not a rating for "less than 1" rating. I am a Cafe del Mar fan and had high expectations for the Chill House No. 1 cds. Wow, what a disappointment! While listening to the tracks on the 2-cd set, I kept thinking "Man, this sounds like reconstituted disco of the worse type! This music is awful and a waste of my hard-earned money. I am very disappointed with this compilation from Bruno.

Chill House Perfection.......2004-01-08

I find myself overwhelmed by the hundreds upon hundreds of compilations that captialize on the words "Ibiza" and "Chill House", etc. Most of these compilations aren't worth your time or money. This 2CD set, however, is one HUGE exception to the rule. I have had this CD since it was released back in 1999 and it is the most consistently played mix in my collection. It is amazingly lush, tropical, laid back, and absolutely gorgeous. There are no clunkers on the entire set. This is the perfect soundtrack to a chilled out party with friends, sitting by the pool, or even relaxing at home in front of the fireplace. Perfection! -- I also HIGHLY recommend "Bargrooves Al Fresco" as a great companion to this 2CD set.

beautiful chill house music ! ..........2003-04-22

Before my brother bought this cd, I was never really into house music. After listing to these 2 cds, I was hooked on chill/deep/soulful house. I don't understand why this cd was rated by others as a 3.5 ?! This cd doesn't need a rating. After you listen to it...you'll understand that it doesn't need a rating because it defies that. So pop this cd in...to chill(obviously) or conversate...and enjoy the sounds that bruno of cafe del mar brings in this chill house mix.

The musical equivalent of beige wallpaper.......2001-08-11

This is, in my opinion, an extremely dull, uninspired collection of house music. The notable feature of this collection is the drum machine that drives every selection and makes everything sound the same. There are no interesting rhythms, no instrumental coloration, no remarkable vocals, no catchy musical phrasing, nothing that would many any of these selections something you would really want to listen to. There isn't a single cut that stands out -- the entire two-disc CD has the same monotonous beat, and one number can't be distinguished from the next. This tepid collection seems to have been randomly compiled, and its greatest sin is that it doesn't even inspire a listener to want to get up and dance. If you want house music, there are dozens of better, more interesting, and more exciting collections than this. If you want chill or jazzy music with a house twist, try the Slip 'n' Slide "Jazz in the House" series, or Nu Cool's "Beach House," or any of the original Cafe del Mar CD's, which are not house, but wonderfully combine trip hop, jazzy, chill music with some danceable beats and rhythms.

Cafe Del Mar, volumen Ocho, a post Padilla compilation if I understood correctly is a collection of way better tunes than this first cd. This is my personal opinion. There is nothing wrong with exposing Penguin Cafe Orchestra to a greater audience, but frankly, I am way happier with the later Cafe Del Mar compilations - tunes are better, meld better together, there are more interesting originals... IMHO.

i really like the cafe del mar series. i first got hooked up with it accidentally in a music store. since then i have grown to love the downtempo music genre. i always try to find other artist like cafe del mar but i find myself coming back everytime. cafe del mar is so well compiled. however, i never got hookup with volume 1. it never did it for me. many people say if you liek cafe del mar you got to have 1-7. volume 1 was too typical for my taste. nothing original. jose padilla did very good on the other 5 though (2-6). yeah, dont' buy volume 1 unless you have money to waste.

The CD that started it all is by far the worst of the series.......2002-08-24

Upon my one and only visit to Ibiza a few years back, I was blow away by the "discovery" (for me at least) of the Cafe del Mar series, at the time helmed by Jose Padilla. I went to a great music store where a little old Spanish lady came up to me and asked me if I was looking for "chill-out", "house" "trip-hop" and I almost died laughing. Don't judge a book by its cover as she knew so much more than I did about music.

Notwithstanding my story, the point is that I truly value people's feedback on Amazon.com and I like to contribute when I really like something or the polar opposite. Here unfortunately I have to report, that the first of the famous series is abysmal. No variety, distinctiveness, and even a general sense of doom rather than the warmth that this series generally generates.

One could argue that the fact that it's not filled anything distinctive should not necessarily be a bad thing as many projects have a different agenda. Unfortunately, even critics of the series who see it only as background noise, would have a point here. It gets worse as I found myself not even being able to have it in the background as the music is not enjoyable or soothing. If you like the series, I love volume 3,4,5,6,7, and now 9. Volume 8 was Bruno's first effort after CDM and Jose Padilla parted ways and it did not quite do it for me, but Volume 9 shows much promise.

Hard to believe that Cafe Del Mar has sunk to this level.

This is NOT "chill," meditative, relaxing or even New Age music.

This is a round-up of the best "relaxing" classical music as performed ineptly and cheaply by nobody in particular.

(...). It's heartless and dull. It's also pointless and sad that Cafe Del Mar would stamp their name on anything.

If you want "relaxing" classical music and you're just starting out in collecting classical or you're not a purist and want music for dinner or a relaxing evening, you would be better off listening to any of these from Amazon (see link below) locked in a wooden box and cotton stuffed in your ears than the tripe of the absolutely horrible, horrible Café del Mar: Classics, Vol. 2.

Killing Me Softly.......2000-12-18

This compilation of the Cafe del Mar is an excellent, thoughful selection of highlights of the previous albums of the series. The tracks range from the lulling Sade-esque opening track by A Man Called Adam to the hypnotic tension of Underworld. Also in the mix is the evocative and wierd song by Penguin Cafe Orchestra, a seventies non-electronic experimental orchestral ensemble, that is reminiscent of a spirited romp in the blustery Scottish Highlands. While this compilation doesn't bear Jose Padilla or Bruno's names as the compilers, it is no less a strong example of the series. I still think v.5 is the best, though. I am a fan; I enjoy the fact that these compilations are undeniably hip and fresh, but do not fall into the trap that most electronica compilations do--Cafe del Mar is not just a bunch of good tracks thrown togethor, nor is it an attempt to capture the ultracool but soon to be discarded sound. The series is timeless.
