5 out of 5 stars Great Example of Classic Early Hip Hop!.......2007-06-04

Buffalo Gals Back to Skool--
British music impresario Malcolm McLaren is most famous (or infamous?) for his managing and promotion of the pioneering Sex Pistols punk-rock band during their meteoric rise and fall during the 1970's. At the beginning of the Reagan era, however, he found himself dabbling in another underground music culture with roots in New York City--hip-hop. Buffalo Gals: Back to Skool compiles virtually all of the hip-hop related recordings that McClaren had a hand in producing, primarily with the World Famous Supreme Team: A duo of part-time 3-card-Monte hustlers, the Supreme Team also hosted a community-access radio show in New York where they showcased their collaborations with McLaren. "Buffalo Girls", "She's Looking Like a Hobo", "Hey DJ" and several more good-times party songs all show up here (largely culled from 12-inch recordings, as most of the material never surfaced on a proper album).

Recorded before sampling technology had become common, the original songs feature mostly live instrumentation from session musicians. Lyrically, the rhymes are much more simplistic compared to today, but it is also free of profanity and gangster themes. The Supreme Team never hit the mainstream, but was an important outfit to know in the pre-Run DMC era of rap.

Also collected with the archival songs are new cover recordings, including legendary hip-hop musicians like De La Soul, Rakim and KRS-One. Interspersed between all the songs are interviews with McLaren himself, where he candidly talks about his encounters with hip-hop's early figures and his attempts to help the music get a foothold in the industry. Between the old and new songs, this is the definitive compilation/tribute to an unlikely early champion of hip-hop music.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC "GOTAHAVEIT" PIECE OF HIP HOP HISTORY..........2004-04-23

First off, i had a few of malcolm mclaren's classic joints on tape, and 12" for years....and i've been meaning to get my hands on this, on a cd format. This,if no body knows about the raw start of hip- hop into main stream music is the TRUTH..!! Gotta love the live on-air shout outs with YES..( RAKIM ) at a young age calling in a shout out, thats some classic material. This is a must have for any one wanting to add a soild piece of coming of age hip-hop classic material, to ther're collection. And oh yeah...the ordering and shippment time was crazy tight....no problems here, everything was in order, gotta say that amazon has alot of hard to find music. BIGG - UP 2 reggierecords, thanks 4 the cd..!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Tedious.......2001-11-02

Prepare to spend an hour listening to what I think are the worst aspects of hip hop: recycled drivel, gratuitous self-promotion, and simplistic, formulaic verbalization as the Buffalo Gals go back to some of the most tired banter ever pressed to disc. Taken from the breakthrough World Famous Supreme Team radio show that broadcasted from New York/Brooklyn in the mid-80s, this album manages to include only a few tracks of good listening, like "Hey DJ (12" Cut)", and plenty of deadwood, like a version of "World's Famous" seriously diluted by an endless recital of thank yous. A better harvest of McClaren's fruitful collaboration with East Cost hip hop can be found on his wonderful 1990 release, "World Famous Supreme Team Show".

3 out of 5 stars A few classics but more than a few worthless cuts.......2001-02-07

Buffalo Gals and He's lookin' like a Hobo are definite Hall of Famers as well as Hey DJ (won't you play that song) are by themselves worth the cost of the overall cd but there's too many cuts here that are pretty boring both musically and lyrically.

Worth the purchase price but only for a few CLASSIC cuts.

5 out of 5 stars Damn hellacious!!.......1999-06-20

You either hate or love Mr. McLaren, but this CD will convert many of the "on the fence" folks! Rarely does one come across an artist who appreciates an art that is way ahead of it's time. Hey, Malcolm practically made rap mainstream! There are many smooth grooves and many shake your ass tunes on this CD. The World's Famous was made by Malcolm...as were Bow Wow Wow, The Sex Pistols...and he actually gave Boy George his first big break. This guy knows trends years before they are realized by most of the world. A true mark of genius. This CD is a piece of history. You must get it!

5 out of 5 stars This is for the true hip hop heads who love the culture........1999-03-25

Back To Skool gives you the verbal history of hip hop and the World Famous Supreme Team as told by the ingenious Malcom Mclaren who witnessed its beginning stages back in the early 80's. This cd is a collage of old and new material that will dazzle the ear with raw beats, historical data, and off the wall rhymes. You get all of the now classic material and all of the WHBI interludes that originally appeared on Duck Rock. You also get to hear the future of hip hop with emcees like: T'kalla, Da Boogie Man, Soulson, and Hannibal Lechter. This cd serves as a land mark of hip hop in its cross roads. For those younger cats who want to learn about hip hop, this is for you. For those cats, like me, who lived the WHBI experience, or who understand hip hop culture, this album is for you.
