5 out of 5 stars Time for a cup of tea with Aunty Aubrey.......2004-04-17

This is a collection of the Orb's Best remixes. I recommend the 2001 release which includes Dave Stewart's "Lily was Here". The remix is an Orb classic. Here is the best of the Orb remix projects. Long, indulgent remixes of popular early 1990's songs, this album represents the best of the Orb's remix work. Disc 1 is the highlight. Material, Keichi Suzuki, and Killing Joke sound like they were made to be played together. An impeccable Orb mix.

5 out of 5 stars Time for a cup of tea with Auntie Aubrey........2004-04-17

Here is an essential set of Orb remixes. The 2001 RELEASE is the best choice (as opposed to 1996) as it includes the Orb remix of Dave Stewart's Lily was Here. It is not often written in the cyberspace discussions of Auntie Aubry's, but the 2001 release cut out Depeche Mode and Erasure in favour of more obscure Orb remixes. The result is perfect. Disc One is without flaws, from the long spralling mix of Killing Jokes's "Democracy" to the obscure ambient mix of "Secret Squirrel" this album is a gem. The second disc is a bit more eccentric, but still worth a listen.

3 out of 5 stars Three stars is just about right.......2003-03-21

This album was first released way back in 1996. I bought it then, and found a lot to like on the first disc. The remix of Suzuki Kei'ichi's "Satellite Serenade" was great, but now that the song has made the rounds on other compilations (including Sasha and Digweed's 'Northern Exposure'), it's lost its freshness. "Mantra," a wonderful song by Material, is given the ultra-deluxe treatment here, and an already-great original is turned into something even better. Stunning. "Democracy" (overlong) and "Fast Forward the Future" (dated) help round out an absorbing listening experience. Fity-two minutes of electronic goodness. "Higher Than the Sun," a classic chill out track, is adequate, but should have been better. "Ambient State" promises to be one of the best Oh-my-god tracks ever produced, but lasts all of 46 seconds. In a way, that's worse than not having included it at all.

Then something goes horribly wrong. The final track on disc one is miserable, and the trend continues. From day one, I found the second disc-- from start to finish-- to be entirely unlistenable. Unimiaginative, dated (even then), and boring, the numbers start sounding phoned-in. After a fantastic buildup, everything falls flat.

Recommended only to completists (now that five years have passed since its initial release). Those first tracks are remarkable, but it all adds up to a great EP followed by lots of static.

3 out of 5 stars stereo.......2002-10-19

I just bought this album, making the first of any ORB cd's that I own. I'm not even finished listening to track 2 yet but I can tell you that so far, it is definately in stereo... I'm not sure what these people are talking about unless this is a new version...

I only gave it 3 stars because I haven't heard enough of it yet to make an educated decision.

3 out of 5 stars Merely good.......2002-02-10

Some Orb albums are great (U.F.Orb, Orbus Terrarum) and some merely good (Pomme Fritz, Cydonia). This album falls into the latter category. I had a sense of "deja vu" when I first listened to this album - like I'd heard it all somewhere before. Some of it I had - in its original form.

This doesn't sound like a collection of remixes, though: it sounds like a proper Orb album, albeit one that sounds like it was made on auto-pilot. However, every noise Orb has ever committed to tape is worth having. Just buy the essentials first.

5 out of 5 stars Auntie Aubry's Excursions into The ultraworld.......1999-12-01

A well done 2-CD collection of various artists work, interpreted by the superstars of electronica, THE ORB! Classic and not so classic tracks are given a good reworking by Dr. Alex Patterson, giving the Orb listener a great product. Even fans of the artists being remixed will enjoy the abstract interpretations produced by this phenomenal electronic maestro. A great addition to any CD collection, many of the tracks are set in a mellow sort of mood. Yet, certain tracks definately have a more rugged feel. Also, there is a good amount of danceable tracks for the club/party scene. Yessir, the Orb never ceases to amaze, and Auntie Aubry's excursions are nothing short of amazing.

Like a stash of old Irish potato whiskey, Alex Patterson (the Orb) gets tastier, stronger, and more covertly mischievous as he gets older. The first Aubrey remix set was, in retrospect, a test drive. This second double-disc is the full-throttle adventure, the work of an ambient-sound scientist not afraid of anything, not genres or boundaries or conventions. Patterson's work--floating, cushiony, and angelic--is pure therapy. His samples and segments inhabit the record like relics from an old antique shop. Classical piano jives alongside Pato Banton's "Beams of Light" while Tangerine Dream cruise alongside Witchman's dirty hip-hop-based "Angel Art," and somehow it all makes sense. Lisa Stansfield's "Time to Make You Mine" mix is deliciously smooth ambient soul, and the Orb's pulsing take on Sun Electric's "Red Summer" is a tasty stew of ambient, dub, and house. But the defining point of the entire set comes with Rick Wright's own remix of his solo cut "Runaway," a haunting piece of music that would have made Jean-Michel Jarre or Peter Gabriel proud. Wright is, of course, one part of Pink Floyd. Patterson has often been viewed as Floyd's only true child, and here the family traits are apparent. This volume is a fitting jewel in a rich and expansive collection of ambience, and it underscores that Patterson is still the master of this dreamy, surreal genre. --Steffan Chirazi

4 out of 5 stars special.......2002-12-31

hey, this CD is really cool...good job!
All tracks have personality, a "sparkling" example of electronic music contaminating other genres...

2 out of 5 stars Not a good sequel.......2002-12-23

I really liked Vol 1 (4 - 4 1/2 *'s), but would have passed on this were it not for the inexplicable (to me) rave reviews here. The samples were downright annoying and most of the music was just plain forgetable. Definitely not up to the standards of other Orb must-haves. I listened to it two or three times after purchase and it's sat on the rack since then. A disappointment, really.

4 out of 5 stars Rule Britania.......2002-04-04

I just like to pint out the crucial fact that this ablum, in its American form, is quite simply amazing. Those of you lucky enough to have purchased the british release however, I really have to say, you've got your mitts on so much more.
The US album is a fine piece of music but nothing on it, nothing at all, can compare to the KLF, Primal Scream and Oldfield songs exclusive to my Ol' Blighty release, bless it. Having at some time in my life owned both versions, and as a life long Orb fan... well, that is to say, my life only really began when i discovered the Orb, I'm cannot let this one slip...

1 out of 5 stars Distorted.......2001-09-18

Perhaps I'm missing something here. Perhaps I'm missing the same album that others are loving....For in TX I have this record and am very disappointed.

The tracks presented here are a somewhat pleasant mixture albeit a bit fragmented in places due to the over use of samples . Although some sounded rather dated this record reminds me of a UFOrb / Orblivion hybrid - that being the 'worst' ( if there is such a thing ) parts of UFOrb mixed with the better sections of the latter. Not bad at all.

Anyway what really upsets me is the quality of the recording. In a word it's horrid. It has very little dynamic range. 80 percent of the tracks have inexcusable distortion. The deep bass suffers the most. Every hit of beat is distorted. It sounds as if the volume level meters were in the red during the whole mastering session ...This is unacceptable.
Just to clarify, the distortion is not the type that works say in an Aphex Twin release or like what occurs on an old recording. This is just plain bad.
I mean, isn't that what we want from an Orb release. To go places, to bathe in the mastery of layering textures and otherworldly instrumentation? To trance?
Not so when the quality is bad enough to cause distraction. Very disappointing. Listen to this carefully in a record shop before purchase if I were you.

5 out of 5 stars Good Ole Fashioned Orb Fun.......2001-09-12

Not only does this sound like original Orb material, but it sounds more like vintage Orb material. Back to the days of Live 93 and UFO Orb, not like some of their more disappointing later releases (i.e. their last 2).
Back to loopy beats, groovey bass lines, Floydian sound non-sequitors, and full brain damaged chill room fun. As a rabid Orb fan, its nice to see them going back to this direction. It doesn't approach their pinnacle achievement of Orbus Terrarum but then again what else ever has? Keep churning the Aubrey's groove out guys, I'll gladly pay my hard earned for any follow ups you care to treat us to.

5 out of 5 stars A few differences between the regular and import versions.......2006-05-29

Since pretty much everyone who has reviewed this has reviewed the US version, I thought I'd point out the differences between that and the UK import (and since this listing claims it's the import, I thought I's choose here to put this). Here's the tracklisting for the UK import:
Disc 1:
01. KLF - 3am Eternal (Blue Danube Orbital Mix) (7:40)
02. Primal Scream Higher Than The Sun (Battersea Shield Mix) (6:20)
03. Wendy & Lisa - Staring At The Sun (Blinding Mix) (8:34)
04. Orb & Robbie Williams - I Started A Joke (I Started An Orb Mix) (4:27)
05. Orb - Once More (FT Explore Satan Mix) (4:46)
06. Lisa Stansfield - Time To Make You Mine (In My Dreams Mix) (9:58)
07. Rick Wright - Runaway (Leggit Dub) (13:38)
08. Art Of Noise - Art Of Love (Youth & Orb Mix) (4:26)
09. Tubeway Army - Jo The Waiter (Bon Apètit Mix) (9:32)
10. Penguin Cafe Orchestra - Music For A Found Harmonium (Pandaharmoniumorb Mix) (4:56)
Disc 2:
01. Mike Oldfield - Sentinel (Nobel Prize Mix) (14:24)
02. System 7 - Miracle (Orb Remix) (6:10)
03. Can - Halleluwa (Halleluwa Orbus II) (9:09)
04. Grid, The - Crystal Clear (Crystal Clear Water Revival Mix) (7:17)
05. Meat Beat Manifesto - Radio Babylon (Beach Blanket Bimboland Mix) (12:38)
06. Tangerine Dream - Towards The Evening Star (Mandarin Cream Mix) (8:23)
07. Witchman - Angel Art (The Tale Of The Orb Remix) (6:17)
08. Damage Manual - Sunset Gun (Full Monty Sunny Orb Up Mix) (5:05)
09. Yasuaki Shimizu - Morocco Mole (6:46)
10. Mindless Drug Hoover - The Reefer Song (Grass Garden Of Child's Mix) (3:04)

As you can see, many of the tracks are the same, but a bunch of tracks are exclusive to each release. Most of the tracks exclusive to this release are on the newer side, so people looking for old-school Orb may be a little disappointed, but I think that any compilation that has The Orb and Robbie Williams doing a cover of the Bee Gees has to get points for originality.
