Nice.......2004-01-11

Caught a portion of this album playing on the radio the other day, and chose to purchase. Its certainly not what comes to mind when I think of jazz... perhaps it even isn't, I'm not a music expert. It just feels like one of those CD's where the musicians attempt to do something different, and it turns out quite well. To me the music flows beautifully, there is a solid beat, and the music is quite lively. Really neat combination... worth checking out imo :)

Musical talent, aptitude and skill to take them far.......2006-03-19

Playing Time - 53:12 -- A minute hadn't elapsed in the opening cut of Peter Frampton's "Do You Feel" before I noticed something distinctly missing from Hot Strings' "Uncharted." They've chosen a bluegrass-related new acoustic medium for their expression, but there's no banjo. Despite this obvious shortcoming, these guys really rise to the challenge. A large percentage of their material is original on this project produced by Pat Flynn. The set has energetic tempos, interpretive twists, and well-calibrated vocals. There are high-octane instrumentals ("Ghost of the Leopard" and "Lighter Than Air" and "March of the Ents") and mesmerizing vocals ("I'll Be There" and "Spirit of the Night" and "Times Like These"). In fine new acoustic fashion, arrangements are executed with great skill to showcase all four musicians' talents. What do the members have in common besides the enjoyment of biking, hiking, skiing, fishing, rock climbing, backpacking, and hacky sack? The answer is a simple one -- the Hot Strings are hot pickers!

The Hot Strings hail from Pagosa Springs, Co. where the majority of them attend Fort Lewis College. Their dynamism stems from having strong fluency in the language of their strings, as well as their willingness to walk fences between genres. A song like "We Will March" yields some interesting results and bountiful rewards when reggae rhythms meet bluegrass. Band members Josiah Payne (mandolin), Carson Park (fiddle) and Jared Payne (guitar) have played together for more than a decade. Bassist Lech Usinowicz joined the band in 2004, replacing Carson's father, Dan Park, who contributed to the writing of four songs on this project. Josiah and Jared are brothers; Carson is their cousin. By the time they were 14, 12 and 10, they'd won the 1998 Rockygrass band contest. A year later, they won the Telluride contest. But that's not all. Carson is the 1999 Colorado fiddle champion. Josiah is the 2000 national mandolin champion. Lech was the 2002 recipient of the San Juan Symphony Scholarship.

While they have "Uncharted," the band deserves to chart some of their songs. They sing in the closer, "I'm going to climb higher and higher until I reach my goal." With that good attitude, dedication, perseverance, a little luck (and perhaps a little guest banjo courtesy of Alison Brown, Tony Furtado or Scott Vestal), it won't take them long. Music gleaned from the past and played by today's generation.......2005-11-05

A review by R. W. Stewart... Playing Time - 53:12 -- These four young men from southern Colorado have put together a fine collection of acoustic and vocal material. The members are Carson Park, fiddle, Jared Payne, guitar, Josiah Payne, mandolin and Lech Usinowicz, bass.

Carson, Jared and Josiah have been playing together for ten years. The oldest of the three in his early 2os. Lech joined the group in 2004 and is their peer in every sense of the word.

Cut #1 is their rendition of Peter Framptons' "Do You Feel" with impressive interplay between the fiddle and mandolin. 2) "Fire on Devil Mountain" was penned by Josiah and rings loud and clear as an old time fiddle tune brought to life in the twenty first century.

It's evident that these gentleman have been influenced by many generations of acoustic music. They incorporate their musical taste with the ease of seasoned veterans and the enthusiasm of new recruits. Their website refers to them as Newgrass/Blue Grass but what sticks in this listener's mind is Progressive Grass.

Their tasty arrangements, vocal harmonies and overall abilities are heard on all 13 cuts of this CD. Some, naturally, stand out. Cut # 5, Josiah Paynes' "I'll be here" is outstanding, especially Jared's guitar work. Carson's vocal harmony on #5 and his lead vocal on "harvest", cut # 4 shows that the fiddle isn't the only instrument he is gifted with. Being one of those who has a plastic statue of Clarence White on my dashboard, I was touched by Jared's and Josiah's rendition of Soldiers Joy, cut # 8. Dropped D tuning and Clarence all the way until, they added their own twist, then returning at the end to the master's touch. Thank you guys.

The disc is their first to be recorded at Monkey Finger Studio in Nashville. Pat Flynn producer, recorded by Brent Truitt and Tim Roberts, mixed and mastered by Tim Roberts. As well performed as this material is, there is one thing I would like to address. Constructive criticism so to speak. I feel the percussive merits a well played mandolin rhythm offers to this style of music were kept a bit low in the mix. I'm not talking blow grandpa off the tractor chops but I would like to have heard Josiah's rhythm pulled up a bit.

Pat Flynn has this to say of these young men in the liner notes. " Being around them helped me remember what it was like to begin the journey; the fear and wonder, the completely transcendent feeling of being swept up by a new song, a newly learned chord or figure. To feel, through the music, that sense of mission, of destiny even, to KNOW who you are and where you belong. So to those with 'ears to hear,' welcome to the Hot Strings' new CD, to their place in the world. They have a lot to tell you and to play for you."
