Baz Knows How to Put a Good Soundtrack Together.......2003-05-01

If you enjoyed the movie you'll enjoy this soundtrack. Each track vividly reminds you of the movie scene in which it was played. And even if you didn't like the movie, there are some fun tunes on here. There are several classics such as 'Love Is In the Air' by John Paul Young, 'Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps' by Doris Day, 'Os Quindins De Ya Ya' by Stanley Black as well as a sweet cover of 'Time After Time'. It's all good for listening to, relaxing to, but most of, for dancing to!

I like all the tracks except for the tangos. They are too fast for my taste, but the sound quality is excellent for all.

41 well recorded tracks.......2007-04-12

All of the tracks are played by the Dennis Hayward Orchestra. If you like the Columbia Ballroom Orchestra, or the Swiss Ballroom Orchestra, buy this double album! There are 41 well recorded instrumental tracks with carefully measured tempos. You will enjoy practicing to this music and for just 30 cents a tune!

There is a full orchestral sound in the waltzes and foxtrots on the first disc. The quicksteps are exceptional and they make me want to dance. Disc two is better than the first. It makes good use of brass and woodwind solos, and the Latin percussion is well done. The rumbas are especially good. Let's hope there is a volume two.

Two and a half stars at best.......2007-04-21

The best I can say for this disc is that it is inexpensive. Beginners looking for music for practice will be frustrated by this disc, because the tempos are all over the place. They vary within each track, and they are often inappropriate to the needs of beginning dancers. Here are the titles, durations, suggested dance, and comments about tempos.

Moon River, 3:19, Waltz. The tempo is on the slow side for waltz.
Somewhere my love, 2:54, Waltz. This is a little faster and nice to dance to.
Paloma, La, 2:20, Tango. The tempo is okay, but the music is sort of dull.
Hernando's Hideaway, 2:31, Tango. Ditto.
Mambo #5, 3:22, Mambo. The tempo is okay, but it is NOT the Mambo #5 you expect it to be.
Mambo jambo, 2:42, Mambo. Good tempo, and great percussion.
Peanut vendor, 2:37, Cha cha. Watch out! Too fast for beginning cha cha.
Cherry pink and apple blossom white, 2:48, Cha cha. The tempo is okay but inconsistent.
Moonglow, 3:06, Foxtrot. Whoa! This is way too slo-o-o-w for foxtrot.
Me and my shadow, 2:29, Foxtrot. This tempo is okay for foxtrot.
Pennsylvania 6-5000, 2:58, Quickstep. This tempo is too slow for quickstep, and so try swing or Lindy.
In the mood, 3:06, Quickstep. This tempo is okay.

Good value for your dance music dollar.......2006-09-20

This CD presents some entertaining music that is enjoyable to both dance to and listen to. The recording quality is high. After purchasing the first copy for our own dance party use, our club purchased additional copies to give as door prizes.

Better choices than this.......2001-12-17

35 minutes makes this a short CD, even at the price. Moon River (waltz) has only the first beat (of 1, 2, 3) which makes it difficult for beginners. The second waltz is fine for beginners, not too fast. The Mambos are classic Prez Prado, super latin feeling. Cherry Pink is the classic arrangement with the retardo, so not strict tempo. The Fox Trots are good for box rhythm. The Quicksteps can be danced as swing. The Tango music is too mechanical, and not inspirational for dancing. Peanut Vendor (cha cha) is awful, in my opinion. There are better choices.

A great collection for the price.......2000-11-04

If you're looking for a CD for beginning dancers this is the one. A collection of great hits you can sing along with and dance along with. Sure to be a winner for any big band or ballroom fan.

Strictly danceable for the most part.......2003-12-12

Many songs comprise either all vocal songs or are instrumental scores that don't transcend beyond the movie it was supposed to represent. Strictly Ballroom is somewhat of an anomaly. Given the subject, there wasn't much need for pop songs to enhance the movie. The dancing and the dance music did that, but the latter is present on the soundtrack. Even if one hasn't seen the movie, the instrumental dance tunes done by David Hirschfelder and the Bogo Pogo Orchestra (yeah, amusing, but competent) featuring tango, waltzes, and even an old classical tune transcends the movie experience into an audio delight. Well, there is one instrumental that may be lost on those who never saw the movie, but it's still great.

A danceable ballroom mix is given to John Paul Young's late 70's quasi-disco hit "Love Is In The Air" which is the song played at the movie's celebratory finale. Jones's other hit, "Standing In The Rain" is likewise done, strung together with another instrumental by Hirschfelder number. Doris Day's rendition of "Quizas Quizas Quizas" should be a familiar chestnut for those growing up in the 1950's. This is the song done while Scott and Fran are practicing backstage...and are caught-nobody knows they are partners yet.

A brisk tango-type number is what "La Cumparsita/Tango Please" is, done by Hirschfelder and orchestra, and it's brief, clocking in at little over three minutes. Also by the same is the famed instrumental "Tequila" segued into a medley with "Sinful Samba," which is one of Scott's numbers early in the movie.

"Rhumba de Burros" is a light-hearted Latin-flavoured number featuring Ignatius Jones sporting a Mexican-type balladeer voice. He also does the snappy "Yesterday's Hero," the song used to describe Scott's father, done in a rockabilly-type Jerry Lee Lewis-like voice. Another standout cut.

"Doug's Tearful Waltz/First Kiss" is a mournful laden number reflecting the sadness Scott's father feels dwelling in memories past, which segues into the instrumental done when Scott and Fran have their first kiss.

Mark Williams and Tara Morice, the latter who played the female lead Fran in Strictly Ballroom, make Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" into a duet. Morice is actually a good singer and the instrumentation features more lush keyboards and synths different from that of She's So Unusual. As for tying with the original... hmmm, it comes pretty darn close. My favourite song here.

Hirschfelder does a brief snippet from Johann Strauss's "The Blue Danube" waltz before the climactic and energetic Latin paso doble number Scott and Fran do at the end of the movie. Spanish guitar included in a ballroom number...not bad.

All in all, an energetic soundtrack for the most part, good for whether one is doing the cha-cha or not.

Beautiful music to a great film!.......2003-04-09

Strictly Ballroom is a feel-good movie, about a dancer that wants to break free of convention and do his "own" type of dance. This movie has an late 80's, early 90's feel to it; however the music is what makes this film. If your not sure, rent it ; but once you see it; it will become a favorite!

This has to be one of my alltime favorite CDs. I listen to this when I need to lift my spirits. I absolutely loved the movie and can't wait for it to come out on DVD.

Ouch! Why can't I give this disc zero stars?.......2007-07-16

The insert claims that these tracks are played by the "Ballroom Dance Orchestra." Many of them sound very, very close to me like tracks played by the Victor Silvester Orchestra. All but two of thirteen tracks are clipped, meaning the final second(s) of the original recording are missing. The track ends abruptly and without proper resolution. Nine of these thirteen titles can be found on VSO's "Ballroom Blitz" (ASIN: B0000CG9NU), add a few seconds, and the recording durations match. Why not buy the VSO Ballroom Blitz album instead?

For anyone who enjoys Cha Cha music, or latin dancing in general,
this is the cd for you. Once you turn it on, you can't help but
get up and dance. Favorites would have to include Colonel Boogie,
Hello Dolly, and Tea for Two. This will have your toes tapping, hands clapping, and hips swaying. This is definately one cd

This albums feel and sound is like no other. If you only let it capture your heart, immense you in its inner beauty, then you will see an example of expressive emotion. Heartfelt and upsetting, it is as if they want you to feel the way they do, it works.

fantastic. from the very start strictly ballroom grabs your attention, and does not let go until the last beat of the album. tracks ranging from soft and soothing to hard and piercing, with emotion all the way through (i swear i hear crying at the end of the track 'crickets'). every song on this album is phenomenal. if youre a fan of the casket lottery, small brown bike, bright eyes, or anything of the like, this album is definately for you.
